Leading US asset manager <keyword id="174755" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="vanguard" source="Orion">Vanguard</keyword> has further slashed its holding in ride-hailing major <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> by more than half, which takes the Bhavish Aggarwal-run company's valuation down to nearly $3.5 billion from $7.3 billion at the end of 2021. According to a TechCrunch report, citing Vanguard's filings, the investment firm has cut the worth of its shares in Ani Technologies, Ola's holding firm, by 51.6%. "The asset manager marked down the holding of its Ola shares to $25 million, from the $51.7 million purchase price years ago, the filings showed," according to the report. Vanguard had valued its Ola's shares at about $33.8 million in February this year. In May, Vanguard had slashed Ola's valuation by 35% amid global macroeconomic conditions, reducing its valuation to about $4.8 billion. Ola has raised more than $3.9 billion over the years, according to public data. IPO-bound Ola Electric has also recorded an operating loss of $136 million (roughly Rs 1,116 crore) and revenue of $335 million (roughly Rs 2,750 crore), missing its revenue goal disclosed publicly. The company reported sales of over 1,50,000 electric scooters for FY23, according to a Reuters report. In the first two months of FY23, Ola Electric claimed to have surpassed Rs 500 crore in revenue and was on track to surpass $1 billion by year's end. In January, Ola laid off 200 employees from its <keyword id="6362049" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola-cabs" source="Orion">Ola Cabs</keyword>, Ola Electric and Ola Financial Services verticals as part of the "restructuring" exercise. Ola joins a growing list of Indian unicorns who have significantly lost their valuations. Invesco lowered Swiggy's valuation by almost half to $5.5 billion in earlier this year while leading US investment firm Fidelity reportedly slashed the estimated worth of its holding in homegrown conversational engagement platform Gupshup by over 20% in a month.

Ola's valuation slashed by more than half by Vanguard

One of the world’s largest asset management company Vanguard has marked up valuation of two Indian startups-Flipkart and Ola. <keyword id="4205636" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vanguard-world-fund">Vanguard World Fund</keyword> marked up <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>'s valuation by up to 64% and Ola's by 12%. The mark up comes as a relief as share prices of Flipkart and Ola fell by 30-40% due to successive markdowns in 2016. As per the filings made with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Vanguard World Fund has raised the value of Flipkart's series-G shares by 57% to $107.78 for the quarter ending May as compared to $68.73 per share during the previous quarter. Flipkart's series-H shares have been marked up 64% from $77.71 to $128.01 during the same period. In November last year, a <keyword id="48670" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Morgan-Stanley">Morgan Stanley</keyword> mutual fund had marked down Flipkart’s valuation at $5.6 billon. Meanwhile, Ola's valuation was moved up by 12% from $187.47 to $209.56 by the fund.

<keyword id="3590566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="RNT-Capital">RNT Capital</keyword> Advisers, a venture fund set up by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ratan+tata&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ratan Tata</a>, is likely to lead an investment round of $100 million, or Rs 650 crore in India’s top ride hailing app <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ola</a>. 
 
Tata may invest $60 million, while rest will be invested by New York-based hedge fund <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=falcon+edge+capital&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Falcon Edge Capital</a>. Besides, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> is also in talks with other investors and looking get funding of $200 million. 
 
If the deal goes through, Ola's valuation will rise to $3.5 billion. 
 
"This new $100 million commitment (will happen) at a higher valuation,” ET quoted sources as saying. 
 <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> has invested in 30 startups earlier in his personal capacity and this Ola’s investment will be the first major transaction by RNT Capital. RNT Capital has set up a $250-million corpus with University of California Investments (UC Investments) to invest in Indian companies. UC Investments manages a corpus of $100 billion across endowment and pension funds, and announced the venture with Tata in February 2016. 
 
Ola is also planning to work with the Indian Government and introduce electric vehicles in the top cities in the next three months. 
 
ET quoted analysts and employees at Ola, saying Ola clocked about six million weekly rides on an average between September and December 2016, across all its offerings-cabs, auto rickshaws and shuttle buses. “The major source of revenues for both Ola and Uber-around 70-75% - comes from their economy services including Ola Micro, Mini and UberGo,” analysts told ET. 
 
Ola is leaving no stone unturned to fight out the increasing pressure from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a>. 
 "Since <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> has been operational for 2-3 years, investors will start asking questions related to profitability,” an analyst tracking the space told ET on the condition of anonymity.

Ratan Tata likely to lead $100 million funding round in Ola; valuation may touch $3.5 billion

Following the crackdown on diesel taxis in Delhi-NCR, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola">Ola</a> is increasing its fleet of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CNG+cars">CNG-fitted cabs</a>. 
 <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, which already has 20,000 CNG cars, will be adding over 5,000 cabs in coming weeks and infusing Rs 200 crore for the same. 
 
"Ola is planning to expand its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=fleet+of+cab">fleet</a> of CNG cabs in Delhi by adding more than 5,000 cabs in the next one week. We have brought together car manufacturers, banks and financiers and valuation platforms to enable heavy discounts, loan offers and on spot valuation and exchange," said Ola COO Pranay Jivrajka. 
 
Ola is also giving lucrative offers to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=drivers">drivers</a> of saving up to Rs 1.5 lakh on exchanging their old diesel vehicles for a new CNG one in next six months. 
 
"This is the largest amongst a series of programs rolled out by Ola to encourage CNG adoption in Delhi-NCR. By the next week, the intent is to ramp up by at least 25 per cent,” said Pranay. 
 
With over 3,50,000 vehicles registered on its platform, Ola offers services across 102 cities in India.

The latest round comes after Ratan Tata's RNT Capital Advisors and US hedge fund Falcon Edge infused money in the startup. "Ola continues to be in talks with various investors, including Coatue Management for this round," a source familiar with the development told ET. As per reports, Ola’s market share in India will be around 65%, with Uber holding the rest. Ola is going aggressive in the country and is working on several projects, including introducing electric vehicles in cities. The latest funding also comes after Uber is embroiled in a cultural row. Uber has also been slapped with an intellectual property lawsuit from Google's parent Alphabet-owned Waymo.

ANI Technologies, which runs Ola, raised investments of more than $1.5 billion from investors, including <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> Group, Tiger Global, Matrix Partners, Steadview Capital, Sequoia India, Accel Partners US and Falcon Edge. While Ola has been successful in raising a sizable amount of funds, it continues to bleed on account of heavy advertising and promotional expenses and high employee cost. The company posted a consolidated loss of over Rs 2,311 crore -- about Rs 6 crore a day -- during fiscal 2015-16. ANI Technologies did see its revenues registering a stellar growth at Rs 758.23 crore during 2015-16 compared to Rs 103.77 crore in the previous fiscal. Ola, which has a presence in 110 Indian cities compared to Uber's operations in 29, has been aggressively expanding its portfolio of services.

Uber’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=travis+kalanick&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Travis Kalanick</a> said the ride-hailing app would invest in India and the investment could be more than that in US or China. 
 
ET quoted a source in its report who said that Uber had not used up all the cash from the first $1-billion commitment and is now building a team, technology solutions that are India-focussed, and quality. 
 Meanwhile, both the cab providers are fighting it out in Delhi High Court after <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> alleged that Uber was violating rules and operating cabs that use diesel as fuel, an accusation that Uber has denied.

According to a Goldman Sachs report, the domestic <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=taxi+apps&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">online car rental market</a> is expected to reach $1.4 billion by 2030.

After getting its hands on a whopping $400 million deal in April this year, now online cab service provider, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ola">Ola</a>, is all set to get another huge sum of Rs 3,150 crore ($500 million). 
 
As reported by Economic Times, officials who were directly aware of the development informed that the deal might add to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/On-Demand-Car-Service-Uber-May-Be-Raising-At-A-Massive-3-Billion-Valuation-Or-Higher/articleshow/21347585.cms">valuation </a>of the company. The current valuation of <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> is $2.5 billion which might go up to $4.5 billion. 
 
The official, on condition of anonymity, informed ET, "The deal could be finalized in about 2-3 weeks." "As <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber+">Uber </a>gets more aggressive in India, Ola will need to burn more cash to maintain its market leadership position," another source further added. 
 
An Ola executive said that the firm is targeting to raise $550 million at a post-money valuation of $5 billion. Reports of bringing new investors onboard have also been heard. 
 The Bengaluru based firm, however, denied making any comments on the matter. Ola, which is a <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> backed company have investors including Russian billionaire <keyword id="303107" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yuri-Milner">Yuri Milner</keyword>'s DST Global, Singapore's GIC and New York based hedge fund Falcon Edge and also Tiger Global, Steadview Capital and <keyword id="144381" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Accel-Partners">Accel Partners</keyword> are major investors. 
 
Ola, so far, has raised around $676 million in six funding rounds from over a dozen investors. 
 
"The company needs cash to invest further in new businesses as well as continued discounting (for customers)," informed a source. 
With acquiring another taxi-service provider <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TaxiForSure+">TaxiForSure </a>earlier this year, Ola, currently, is present in around 10o Indian cities. 
 
One of Ola’s biggest rivals, San Francisco-based Uber, which is valued at an estimated $50 billion, has grown swiftly in India since its launch in Bengaluru in 2013. It is now present across 20 cities. 
 
The company is currently working on several new initiatives, including carpooling, on-demand food and grocery deliveries, on-demand bus aggregation and logistics. 
 Ola's spurt in revenues has been aided by the $200-million acquisition of rival <keyword id="1428790" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="TaxiforSure">TaxiForSure</keyword>, whose revenues have doubled since the deal closed in March this year. But Ola still accounts for over 80% of the revenue of the combined entity. Ola currently gets over 80% of its bookings through its mobile application.

Ola may also focus on scaling the quality of the business. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> is also increasing its focus in India that has become second most important market after the US. 
 
The fresh funding will be important for Ola as Uber has stepped up efforts in India. 
 
Both the ride-hailing apps will also have to be careful about the burn rates. 
 
Uber is currently burning about $30 million in India, which will go up to $45-50 million as it ramps up expansion across cities and products.
