Uber hikes fare across the country, starts showing destination and payment mode to drivers before they accept the trip

Some of the Ola and Uber drivers are on strike in New Delhi — demanding fare hike and moratorium on loan repayment

You must have by now heard about Ola and Uber planning to raise their fares. This comes as real bad news for all the commuters who had started relying heavily on Ola and Uber taxis for their daily commute, owing to their economical pricing over the exorbitant fares charged by local taxis and autos. However, it seems commute is going to be a big problem all over again. 
 
Both cab aggregators have announced they are increasing their prices in the lowest category of cabs - the bracket used mostly by the middle and upper- middle class commuters. 
 
In Delhi, where Ola was charging Rs 6 per km apart from the base fare of Rs 40 for its Micro cabs, it will now be charging almost double - Rs 12 per km after the first 20 km. 
 
Same is the case with Uber. In Delhi for instance, an UberGo commuter will now have to pay Rs 12 per km after the initial 20 km against Rs 6 per km they were paying before. 
 
In Pune, the cost has been fixed at Rs 15 per kilometre for UberGo rides beyond the first 15 km. For Vizag it’s Rs 12 per kilometre after first 15 km and for Kolkata, it is Rs 12 per km after first 10 km. 
 
Similarly the Ola commuters in Bangalore would also need to shell out Rs 12 per km as compared to Rs 6 all through the journey earlier. 
For Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, the fare scheme for Ola Micro is same as Bangalore. 
 
Both Ola and Uber have taken this move to earn profits, as per the news reports. However, this price war also poses the right opportunity for rivals like Meru Cabs to grab their share in the market. 
 
Interestingly, Meru is already giving discounts to customers. It has recently introduced Exactometer, a system where the rider needs to pay exactly the fare estimated before the start of the trip, to counter the disruptive fare rates of Ola and Uber. 
 
It remains to be seen how this steep fare hike will go down with customers, and who really will have the last laugh.

doubled, riding an Ola or Uber will no longer be your cheapest bet

<keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> and <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> are finding a way to expand income and cut costs, a departure from their past system of spending intensely to gain market share. 
 
The ride-hailing applications have begun increasing charges in top urban areas, diminishing the sum they have been paying as incentives to drivers. The companies are also keeping a tight watch on fraudulent drivers. 
 
This is all focused toward ‘unit economics’ or the amount of money they get or loose on every customer. According to investors and analysts tracking the ride hailing app business, Ola and Uber each burn $30-40 million every month. 
 
"Subsidies won't last forever, and customers need to slowly get used to it. This is a step in that direction," a person briefed on Uber India's plans told ET. 
 
"We are always working to make Uber the most affordable mobility option for our riders and an attractive economic opportunity for hundreds of thousands of microentrepreneurs on our platform," an Uber spokesperson told ET. 
 
Ola has cut driver incentives in light of the quantity of trips completed by as much as 20-40% in Delhi when contrasted with a year back. For example, drivers finishing eight treks with Ola in Delhi now get a motivation of Rs 2,400 when contrasted with Rs 3,000 a year back 
 
Uber has also remodeled its incentive model to reward drivers based on earnings and the incentive won’t be based on the number of trips. 
 
"For shorter distances, the base fare partially takes care of the cost, but the longer the distance, the more cash we end up spending and it's an added cost for both Uber and Ola," a source told ET. 
 
The added advantage of raising fares is that it could push riders towards the car-pooling service operated by them. 
 
Uber has increased the price for trips more than 15 kms in Bengaluru and Hyderabad a year back. The reason given was that it was to incentivize drivers to accept long-distance booking. Recently, they have increased the fares for distances beyond Delhi-NCR region. Ola too, is following the same structure. 
 These measures come after Ola and Uber also increased fares for most popular categories, <keyword id="6464993" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micro">Micro</keyword> and <keyword id="2604816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="UberGo">UberGo</keyword>, respectively. After 20 km, customers will be charged Rs 12/km on UberGo and Rs 13/km on UberX. Up to 20 km, they will still ride at Rs 6/km on Uber-Go and Rs 9/km on UberX, the company said on its website. The base fare on both categories remains the same. 
 
Ola Micro too charged Rs 6/km up to 20 km and Rs 12/km for additional distance, matching Uber prices. 
 
"The focus is on building a real business now. The supply game on quantity in Ola's view beyond a point does not build anything of value," said an investor in Ola.

In a statement shared with IANS, an Uber spokesperson said the company never explored exiting India -- not even for a minute -- and the report is "categorically false." "India is as important to Uber today as it was when we launched nine years ago. We are serving riders and drivers across more than 100 cities, hiring Indian talent aggressively, and planning for the next decade and beyond," the company spokesperson said. Uber competes with SoftBank-backed <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> in the country. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in April that it will expand its product offerings and its team in India. "We continue to expand the product offerings for the Indian consumer. Whether it is autos, motos or high-capacity vehicles or rentals, India has always been a very big part of the Uber journey," he said during the Virtual i3 summit organised by Times Bridge. Uber aims to expand its engineering talent in India to more than 1,000 people from 700 at present, he had announced. Last month, <keyword id="2502101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uber-india" source="Orion">Uber India</keyword>'s Director of Central Operations, Nitish Bhushan, said that they are "always striving to make driving with Uber a viable and attractive option for drivers and the recent hike in fares will directly boost their earnings per trip". To remove frustration for riders and drivers alike, the company is also showing trip destinations to drivers before they decide to accept the ride. "Drivers at the Uber advisory council meeting told us they would like more flexibility around payments. We are now showing drivers the mode of payment (cash or online) before the trip starts," the company said. To make the cash or online decision irrelevant, the company has also introduced a daily pay process for drivers. With these changes, the company said that they are also reinforcing their service quality expectations with drivers, especially in areas like cancellation and ensuring AC rides. Uber dismisses report that said it's planning to sell off its India business

Next time you book an <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, be prepared to shell out more money as it has increased its ride time charges by 50%. 
 
Now, the ride time charge will be Rs 1.5 per minute. Earlier it was Re 1. 
 
Uber now charges Rs 6 per km up to 20 km and Rs 12 per km thereafter. 
 The ride time charges -- calculated on the basis of total time of the ride -- for '<keyword id="6591085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="UberPool">UberPOOL</keyword>' and 'UberX' have also been hiked to Rs 1.5 per minute. 
 
When contacted, an Uber spokesperson said: "Starting January 5, 2017, we have made some changes to our pricing structure in Delhi, NCR in order to serve the city better." 
 
Last year, Uber had introduced 'upfront fare' under which the company calculates and shows rates depending on expected time and distance of travel and local traffic. The fares fluctuate due to demand. 
 
Affordable pricing has been one of the important factors driving the uptake of on-demand taxi services in the country. 
 
Uber in engaged in an intense battle in the Indian market with local rival Ola as well as radio taxi operators like Meru. 
 
The company, which operates in 29 Indian cities, counts India as its second largest market, after the US.

While the total number of daily rides has increased this year, the growth in daily rides at Uber and Ola has declined to 20% on average so far in 2018, according to a report by the Economic Times. The average amount of daily rides stands at 3.5 million across three segments- cars, three-wheelers and motorcycles, compared to 2.8 million in 2017. While this consistent decline in daily ride growth is likely a result of various factors, it seems that the problem has more to do with the <keyword id="46639" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="supply">supply</keyword> of <keyword id="44435" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="drivers">drivers</keyword> and than consumer demand. Interestingly, these two seem to be interlinked. In a bid to cut their operating losses, both Ola and Uber have dialled back the incentives they give to drivers and charged higher commissions, which has resulted in a decline of as much as <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/ola-uber-supply-drops-by-25-as-drivers-leave-due-to-lack-of-incentives-117061900635_1.html">60% </a>in driver incomes. In turn, a lot of drivers leaving the platform- with some estimates of a 25% reduction in drivers. As a result of the decline in supply of drivers, surge pricing has become more frequent which has led to a hike in average fares. This has suppressed demand from <keyword id="6369997" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Riders">riders</keyword>, something that Uber and Ola have tried to counter through loyalty programmes. In addition, the increase in fuel prices in the last year has also driven a rise in fares, exacerbating the decline in rider demand. Uber and Ola have also shifted focus slightly from their core ride-sharing operation and have been diversifying into other operations such as food delivery. As rider demand in its home market declines, Ola has been expanding its overseas operations. The Indian cab hailing company recently launched operations in New Zealand, its third foreign market after the UK and Australia. Meanwhile, Uber has ramped up its investments in India after winding down its operations in Southeast Asia. The country reportedly accounts for 10% of Uber’s global rides on a daily basis.

Here’s why Uber and Ola are experiencing a decline in their daily ride growth

However, Ola is in three times as many cities in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, and had twice as many drivers as Uber, indicating that Uber’s market approach is centred on depth as opposed to breadth. Simply put, Uber is making more from less. As the old saying goes, “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”. Fending off Uber’s advances in the market has led to a significant drain on Ola’s finances, and will continue to eat into its funds in the near future. The company posted a net loss of nearly ₹49 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2017, according to regulatory filings. That’s a significant jump from the ₹31.5 billion it lost in 2015-2016. It reported close to ₹52 billion in expenses in 2016-17 to increase its market share. This is roughly a quarter of the $3 billion it has raised in funding from its investors. Uber’s ambitions Uber is not going to back down anytime soon either. India is an important market for the company, comprising around <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/mobile/india-one-of-our-healthiest-markets-uber-ceo-dara-khosrowshahi/63573894">10% of its worldwide trips</a>, according to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. Uber will continue expanding its operations in the country, targeting a five to ten-fold increase in weekly trips over the next decade. In order to do this, it will supplement the $1 billion investment it announced in 2015. To increase its reach in India, Uber recently launched “Uber Lite”, a slimmed down version of its ride-hailing app targeted at people with limited space on their phones, as well as small data packages and slow internet speeds. Ola also boasts a Lite version of its app. A possible merger Achieving scale in India is hard. Operational costs are high and since both are trying to capture more customers, trip fares are low. There have been reports that Ola and Uber are <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/rivals-ola-uber-on-road-to-merger/article23375769.ece">considering a merger</a> and Uber is no stranger to joining forces with rivals. In March, after years of intense competition with Singapore’s Grab in Southeast Asia, Uber decided <a href="https://www.uber.com/newsroom/uber-grab/">to merge its business with Grab’s</a> in a number of countries in the region, including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Both Ola and Uber share an investor - the Japanese technology conglomerate <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">Softbank</keyword> Group, which is said to be lobbying for a merger. If both companies merge, they will be in a position to hike prices. This is something India’s antitrust regulators will be wary off, for the merged entity will effectively have a monopoly over the ride-sharing market. The current scenario in India’s ride-sharing market is comparable to its e-commerce market. As two giants burn cash and duke it out for market leadership, consumers benefit from low prices. But the companies will need to make a profit sooner or later and in the medium term, someone will win. And then, perhaps, we lose. For instance, both Ola and Uber have increased their commissions from trips, and reduced the incentive bonuses, over the past year or so. That leads to lesser income for drivers on the platform, who have often tried to protest against the moves as well. Since both riders and drivers are customers for these companies, the effects of them trying to maximise profits will eventually be felt by everyone.

The drivers are now entitled to minimum wage and other employment protections, ruled the top court. “When a ride is booked through the Uber app, it is Uber that sets the fare and drivers are not permitted to charge more than the fare permitted by the app. It is therefore Uber that dictates how much the driver is paid and the work they do,” said the Supreme Court during its ruling. Uber has been fighting the case in the UK for almost five years now, where in 2016 a tribunal court had ruled in favour of <keyword id="6364641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber-drivers">Uber drivers</keyword> Yaseen Aslam and James Farrar. “I am overjoyed and greatly relieved by this decision which will bring relief to so many workers in the gig economy who so desperately need it. I hope in future the government will choose to carry out its duty to enforce the law and protect the most vulnerable from exploitation,” Aslam said in a statement today after the verdict. This ruling could impact all ride-hailing companies like Uber, Ola, Lyft, Bolt etc., who all call their drivers as ‘mini entrepreneurs’ or independent contractors, which gives them the flexibility to also switch between apps. However, Farar called this a false dream of endless flexibility and entrepreneurial freedom. “The reality has been illegally low pay, dangerously long hours and intense digital surveillance. I am delighted that workers at last have some remedy because of this ruling, but the government must urgently strengthen the law so that gig workers may also have access to sick pay and protection from unfair dismissal,” he said in a statement today. This could also impact Uber’s case across the globe, where it is often put under scrutiny for its treatment of its driver partners. Most recently, in September 2020, Uber and Ola drivers in Delhi NCR had gone on a strike demanding hike in their per kilometre fare as well as a reduction in the commission that the companies take. While foreign judgements have no authoritative value on Indian courts they do have persuasive value. “There is nothing under law that requires Indian courts to uphold foreign law, however foreign judgements can be applied as having persuasive value if there are structural similarities in the facts of a case (between the foreign and domestic cases). For example, in the Aruna Ramchandra Shaunbag v. In a number of cases concerning constitutional law, the courts have quoted foreign judgements and principles for persuasive value. Within the common law tradition, its common to borrow and cite foreign judgements for persuading a case,” a lawyer told Business Insider. In a report evaluating the benefits offered by the likes of Uber and Ola during the COVID-19 pandemic, the <a href="https://www.orfonline.org/research/covid-19-and-indias-gig-economy-the-case-of-ride-hailing-companies-69044/">Observer Research Foundation</a> had said, “The current scenario, in which livelihoods and health of an entire workforce are threatened, proves that flexibility cannot come at the cost of most basic protections. All workers – irrespective of their unemployment arrangements – need to be able to access health care, to choose to stay home when unwell, and benefit from income support in case of a crisis-related reduction of working time or job loss.” In the recent Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman too had said that gig economy workers in India would come under ESIC (Employee State Insurance Corporation) scheme and minimum wages will apply to all such workers.
