<ul><li>Indian unicorn Ola plans to economically empower women via skills training.</li><li>Its charitable arm <keyword id="7908564" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola-foundation">Ola Foundation</keyword> aims to empower 500,000 women by 2025. </li><li>It will train women in textile production and printing, financial and digital literacy programmes, health awareness, and vocational skills.</li></ul>Indian ride-hailing unicorn Ola plans to impart skills to 500,000 women through its charitable venture Ola foundation, by 2025. The foundation will provide employment-linked skills training, financial literacy and social empowerment through life-skills education. “Our pilot programmes have demonstrated that financial and social independence for women can bring about a significant improvement in the well-being of their families,” said Srinivas Chunduru, Mentor at Ola Foundation and group CHRO. The Ola foundation, which was formed in 2016, is hoping to train women in textile production and printing, in addition to financial and digital literacy programmes, health awareness, and vocational skills. To launch this initiative, Ola conducted multiple researches, which includes talking to the spouses of its driver partners in Bengaluru. It has also partnered with Gram Tarang for social empowerment and life skills training with a 60-hour interactive programme.

<keyword id="2808667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO">OYO</keyword> conducted a survey among its <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> customers to unearth trends on how Indian women like to <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword>. The data is based on research conducted among 400 women in the age group 18-60+ across different locations in India, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Odisha, Telangana and <keyword id="6355554" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>.

The survey had some interesting findings: 
 
● 37% respondents reported traveling only for leisure, while 53% traveled for both work and leisure. 
● Women appear to be more conscientious workers, or at least those with less disposable time on their hands as only 51% reported clubbing a work trip with personal break, while 23% claimed they had never considered it

● Friends (57%) rank higher than Family (51%) as “preferred travel companions” for women but partners reign supreme at 62% 
● Personal research via internet and magazines ranks higher (78%) than recommendations from friends &amp; family (51%) while choosing a travel destination. Social media came third (32%) and movies trailed the last (12%) when it came to sparking travel inspiration.

● Contrary to expectations, 69% women opted for budget hotels over five-star hotels (18%) while 6% preferred to stay in a hostel while traveling 
● 10% respondents had never stayed with friends or family while traveling, but all had “often” or “sometimes” stayed at a budget hotel! 
● While 10% women totally shot down the idea of impulsive trips, accommodation (52%) was the biggest concern followed by expense (29%) due to booking at short notice 
● Budget hotels (35%) topped the choice of accommodation for women traveling solo, followed by staying with friends or family (25%)

Travelling solo makes Indian women feel empowered, reveals OYO survey

Before Elon Musk-led Tesla finally makes its India entry, ride-hailing platform Ola on Monday announced world's largest two-wheeler manufacturing facility called Ola FutureFactory that will have annual production capacity of one crore vehicles and will be operational by 2022. The factory will generate 10,000 direct employment, along with additional jobs being created by Ola vendors and suppliers. According to <keyword id="1543567" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhavish-Aggarwal">Bhavish Aggarwal</keyword>, Chairman and Group CEO, the Phase 1 will be ready with initial annual capacity of two million around June this year. Built over 500 acres in Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu, the facility will roll out one scooter every two seconds at full capacity, Aggarwal told mediapersons. "It will have 10 production lines running at full capacity. It will be the most advanced two-wheeler factory with 3,000 AI-powered robots built on Industry 4.0 principles," he said. It will be an integrated manufacturing facility, addressing all needs from battery to finished goods. <keyword id="4393078" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric">Ola Electric</keyword> has also released first teaser visuals of the much-anticipated <keyword id="433124" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-scooter">electric scooter</keyword>. The announcement came as Tesla made its official to enter the country and chose Karnataka over Tamil Nadu to firm up its roll-out plans. Almost all —  92% — of Ladakh children suffer from anaemia and the rest of the country isn’t faring any better either

Entry of a large player with deep pockets, significant consolidation (both large and medium size organizations) and not just that but mobile telecom service providers investing in a parallel business model of payment banks. 
 
Naturally, all of this has had a huge impact in the way talent is viewed. 
 
In the mid -2000s telecom made a dent in the talent and rewards space.

This has been showcased in the way Telecom has been reacting to business challenges and in turn rewards and HR budgets.

Navneet Rattan - Industry Lead – Manufacturing &amp; Services Sector, Aon Hewitt commented on the sector saying, "Amongst all the challenges that Telecom is weathering, it is still projecting a healthy 8.9% salary increase in 2017. Compared to a 9.7% salary increase average last year, it is a decrease but it is due to volatile developments in this sector." 
 
In the last 3 – 4 years, Telecom has consistently been close but lower than India average which is concerning. 
 
However, it's important to remember telecom was one of the first industries to adopt high differentiations for top talent. 
 According to Aon Hewitt’s 21st India Annual Salary Increase Survey, In 2016, not only were the number of employees ranked ‘A’ are less than 10%, the differentiation offered to top talent was 1.7 times. This differentiation has consistently grown year on year which means that compensation levels are competitive and some key job roles are expected to get hefty compensation compared to their counterparts in the <keyword id="34981" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="telecom-sector">Telecom sector</keyword>.

In addition, the adoption of pay at risk is fairly significant. 
 
At 13.2% of pay paid through variable pay, telecom is only second to financial institutions and Hi – Tech (in the overall services category). Further, telecom has been one of the first adopters of high long-term incentives at the senior and top level and this trend continues. 
 The attrition in telecom is 19.2 percent. This is approximately 3% higher than <keyword id="46431" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Inc">India Inc</keyword>. average but in line with any service based industry with a large sales force. While the overall attrition in Telecom is higher than India Inc., the key talent attrition is below the India average and stands at 7.6%.

Telecom Sector employees to get an 8.7% salary hike on average, amidst interesting developments

Of this, 75 were invited to an event that helped them build their confidence and interview skills, followed by a boot camp that 30 shortlisted women attended. Finally, 10 participants were given the opportunity to join PayPal and continue their professional journey at the end of the initiative.

PayPal's 'Recharge Programme' wants women technologists on a break to get back to work

While one might think that it is a move for empowering women in the corporate world; for social media giants like <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> and <keyword id="939877" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pinterest">Pinterest</keyword>, this is a move to narrow down the difference between both the genders. 
 
In India, where women are emerging as promising <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=entrepreneurs">entrepreneurs</a>, meeting the industry’s requirements, the technology industry’s numbers are still conspicuous. No specific targets have been set by the sector so far. Surprising results came up when a business daily, The Economic Times reached out to India’s 10 most highly valued startups for details on female participation in their tech and non-tech teams. 
 
At <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=In-Mobi">In-Mobi</a>, there were just 15% <keyword id="32919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-employees">women employees</keyword> in their tech team while at Paytm, the situation is slightly improved with 20% women employees. Startups like <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, Freshdesk, Practo, Quikr and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> declined to share any details while Mu Sigma and Ola didn’t responded to the queries. 
 
The micro-blogging site <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Twitter+">Twitter </a>recently made a public announcement stating its goal to increase the number of its overall women workforce from 34% to 35% and in its tech division too, the firm wants to have 16% women employees from the current 13%. 
 
"(Inclusion) enables companies to solve complex problems and innovate more effectively, which is particularly beneficial for startups, who differentiate themselves through innovation," said Natalie Johnson, partner at Paradigm, a Silicon Valley-based agency working with highly-valued startups such as Airbnb and Pinterest on their diversity initiatives. It's not that startups do not recognise this. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Zomato+">Zomato </a>co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said that gender ratios in the finance and tech teams were "very lopsided". Goyal also said that half of all senior management roles at Zomato were held by women. 
 
Indeed, promoting gender diversity in the workforce starts early, said Johnson of Paradigm. "A key way tech companies can promote gender diversity is by mitigating bias in how they attract, recruit, manage, and retain talent," she said. 
 
"Raising individual awareness of bias and implementing structures to reduce bias can enhance efforts to hire a diverse workforce." Some startups have initiated measures to achieve this. At InMobi, all recruitment managers are women. The company is also set to establish HackerSchool, a month-long scholarship and sponsorship program for women software engineers who will be taught by In-Mobi engineers. 
 
However, "startups don't lose their sleep over their gender diversity ratio. It's not their number priority. But they should, because their business depends on it," suggested Geeta Kannan, managing director India of Anita Borg Institute, a non-profit advocating the need for more women in the tech industry. 
 
"For startups, the need of the hour is talent, not gender or any other aspect," said Shachi Irde, executive director of Catalyst India, an organisation advocating more roles for women in business. The diversity agenda is a smaller subset of a more important talent program for startups, she said. 
 
But to attract talent, startups should introspect whether half the population will prefer the fast paced work environments that these firms thrive in, said Kannan of Anita Borg Institute. 
 
To correct this, she said it was important for startups to draft policies like work-from-home arrangements and flexible hours. Change on this front will take time as well as effort, said Abhay Singhal, founder and chief revenue officer at In-Mobi, which in the past year had drawn up a slew of initiatives to ease gender bias in workforce.

Internet giant <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> on Thursday began work here on its largest campus outside of its headquarters in the US. The 3 million square feet building is coming up at Gachibowli, the information technology cluster. The company also unveiled the design of the campus coming up at the 7.3-acre site it acquired in 2019. <keyword id="68884" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telangana" source="Orion">Telangana</keyword>'s Information Technology Minister K.T. Rama Rao said he was super excited to break the ground for Google's largest campus outside of their headquarters at Mountain View, the US. The building prioritises sustainability and energy efficiency throughout its design. Upon commissioning, it will offer a highly skilled tech workforce a healthy, collaborative workplace that is both resilient and adaptable, designed to serve the city for years to come, Google said. "I am pleased that Google is deepening its roots in <keyword id="6354552" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hyderabad" source="Orion">Hyderabad</keyword> through this landmark building which incorporates sustainability into its design, keeping in mind Hyderabad's large and future-focused talent pool," said Rama Rao, who unveiled the building design at a ceremony held onsite. The campus was originally planned as a 2 million square facility with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore. An agreement was signed between the Telangana government and Google in 2015 when Rama Rao had visited the company headquarters in California. Google currently operates out of a leased facility in Kondapur in Hyderabad and employs about 7,000 people. The new campus, which was earlier expected to be ready in 2019, is likely to nearly double the headcount. Meanwhile, Google on Thursday signed an MoU with the Telangana government to support and accelerate its vision of leveraging technology for sustainable economic development and inclusive social development. Under this new initiative, Google will collaborate with the government through its various arms to extend scholarships for Google Career Certificates to Telangana's youth, support women entrepreneurs through digital, business and financial skills training, and strengthen the government's school modernisation efforts with digital teaching and learning tools and solutions. As part of the joint effort, Google will also support the Telangana government's efforts to improve public transportation and use of digital technologies in agriculture. KTR, as the minister is popularly called, noted that Google has been working with the Telangana government since 2017, using its solutions to support "our vision of a Digital Telangana and furthering our mutual aim of making every citizen digitally empowered". "Our previous MoUs with them have resulted in some great initiatives that have positively affected citizens from all walks of life. The rapid acceleration of technology especially with the use of <keyword id="294572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="machine-learning" source="Orion">machine learning</keyword> (ML) and <keyword id="107950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence" source="Orion">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI) has enabled organizations to sustain and potentially thrive in today’s economic landscape. A recent study by PwC <a href="https://www.pwc.com/us/en/tech-effect/ai-analytics/ai-predictions.html">revealed</a> that investment in AI has skyrocketed in the past year. Nearly 86% of the survey respondents stated that AI has become a mainstream technology in their firm. While its growing list of applications is undeniable -from enabling organizations to effectively deal with complex and time-consuming repetitive tasks, to identifying growth opportunities for the future— AI is still far from perfect. The perfect example of AI’s drawback is concerning ‘ethics and <keyword id="94784" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bias" source="Orion">bias</keyword>’. These two elements have garnered AI negative attention from the public. For example, there is evidence of bias against dark-skinned and female individuals in face recognition technology- racial and gender biases are common, it appears. Other examples include AI recruiting tools that showed bias against non-white candidates, candidates of a certain ethnicity, race or language, and women, among many other examples. Yet, even with this criticism, many organizations are still not able to address this issue. As per a recent <a href="https://www.fico.com/en/latest-thinking/market-research/state-responsible-ai-2021">report</a> from FICO, only 20% of the enterprises are actively monitoring their models in production for fairness and ethics. Additionally, 73% of the survey respondents found it difficult to get the support of their executive board for prioritizing AI ethics and tackling bias associated with it. Biases in AI emerge due to ML based training data which inculcates inaccurate human unconscious beliefs and assumptions into the AI learning module, making its reactions biased. An overrepresentation of certain data types can result in a system that can put a greater emphasis on that instead of assigning equal weightage to different data points. Therefore, it is vital that organizations that are heavily investing in AI tools take measures that will help them to eliminate bias while enabling them to establish best practices from the very beginning. Incorporate the principles of ethical AI To eliminate the bias and elevate the AI ethics practices, organizations first need to choose how they can develop and deploy AI technologies. They should ingrain the ethical principles of AI such as explainability, security, privacy, and human agency oversight. Doing this will empower them to eliminate the root of AI bias before the technology is deployed to the enterprise-wide infrastructure. To ensure that AI ethics are followed, the European Commission has launched its first-ever legal framework to set up a precedent for transparency in AI. This framework as per the committee ensures the safety and fundamental rights of people and businesses while strengthening AI uptake, investment and innovation across the EU. <h3 style="line-height:1.3800000000000001;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;">Get the Board on board</h3>As any issues associated with AI may have comprehensive and long-term hazards such as reputational and financial impact, it is of utmost importance to get the board on company’s board to deal with threats associated with AI. Ideally, the task should be the responsibility of the technology or data committee of the board. To incorporate ethics into AI, organizations should begin with determining what matters most to the stakeholders. Organizations should consider having a committed AI governance and advisory council that includes cross-functional leaders as well as outside consultants that would engage with stakeholders by having a multi-stakeholder group in place. They should establish and oversee the governance of AI-enabled solutions that include their design, development, deployment, and use. Many tech giants have this AI ethics board already set up. Invest in diversifying the AI field Most people have emphasized the point that AI as a field does not encompass the diversity of society that includes gender, geography, race, and physical disabilities. Having a more diverse AI community in place is in a much better position to predict, identify and evaluate issues of unfair bias and engage with communities that are suffering from them. This will require them to invest on multiple fronts especially AI education as well as access to tools and opportunities. The emergence of new technology always brings associated benefits and risks, and AI is no special case. Therefore, it is up to the enterprise leaders to navigate the intricacies by weighing risks and benefits for achieving their objectives as well as fulfilling their commitment to multiple stakeholders. Even as multiple seeks to capitalize on AI technology to enhance their business performance, organizations should consider the ethical questions raised by this technology and find ways to implement it responsibly.
