Ola Electric is cutting 500 jobs across verticals and levels as part of a restructuring exercise, according to people aware of the development. The company, which has come under the scanner for its poor aftersales service recently, had started the job cut in the September quarter. "It has been going on for some time now, starting around July. It has been a gradual process of removing redundant roles across verticals and levels," said a source. The exercise is expected to be completed by the end of this month. Ola Electric is looking to optimise workforce with an aim to improving margins and enhance profitability, the person added. Earlier this month, Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) had ordered a detailed probe into complaints related to alleged "deficiencies" in services and electric two-wheelers manufactured by Ola Electric. Last month, the company had said that out of 10,644 complaints received from CCPA, it has resolved 99.1 per cent of the complaints.

Laying off 200 engineers to 'centralise' operations, clarifies Ola

Leading US asset manager <keyword id="174755" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="vanguard" source="Orion">Vanguard</keyword> has further slashed its holding in ride-hailing major <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> by more than half, which takes the Bhavish Aggarwal-run company's valuation down to nearly $3.5 billion from $7.3 billion at the end of 2021. According to a TechCrunch report, citing Vanguard's filings, the investment firm has cut the worth of its shares in Ani Technologies, Ola's holding firm, by 51.6%. "The asset manager marked down the holding of its Ola shares to $25 million, from the $51.7 million purchase price years ago, the filings showed," according to the report. Vanguard had valued its Ola's shares at about $33.8 million in February this year. In May, Vanguard had slashed Ola's valuation by 35% amid global macroeconomic conditions, reducing its valuation to about $4.8 billion. Ola has raised more than $3.9 billion over the years, according to public data. IPO-bound Ola Electric has also recorded an operating loss of $136 million (roughly Rs 1,116 crore) and revenue of $335 million (roughly Rs 2,750 crore), missing its revenue goal disclosed publicly. The company reported sales of over 1,50,000 electric scooters for FY23, according to a Reuters report. In the first two months of FY23, Ola Electric claimed to have surpassed Rs 500 crore in revenue and was on track to surpass $1 billion by year's end. In January, Ola laid off 200 employees from its <keyword id="6362049" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola-cabs" source="Orion">Ola Cabs</keyword>, Ola Electric and Ola Financial Services verticals as part of the "restructuring" exercise. In his email, he also spoke of an organizational restructure, which would include streamlined KRAs, KPIs, and reporting lines to enable “more systematic and structured cross-functional work across the lifecycle of product development.” Aggarwal was referring to Ola Electric’s most recent acquisition – Amsterdam-based EV startup Etergo. Through this acquisition, Ola Electric will now work with the startup to bring their award-winning e-scooters to markets across the world. “Looking forward, our aim is to build electric vehicle products and the required BaaS systems for a global market and across all product segments,” said Aggarwal, who said the future belongs to electric and connected mobility and that the team at Ola is working hard to bring out the electric vehicle soon. Ola Electric is aiming for the over 100 million global two-wheeler market, including the over 20-million Indian two-wheeler market. In July 2019, Ola Electric became a unicorn after it raised $250 million from Softbank. Ola Electric plans to hire 2000 —  co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal says electric two-wheeler launch soon

New Delhi, Nov 28 () Ride-hailing major Ola is undertaking a restructuring exercise ahead of its planned IPO and the move could impact up to 250 roles, according to sources.
 The company, which has been focussing on profitability along with building up scale as it expands into international markets, will accommodate some of these employees in other business units like food, electric and financial services, sources close to the development said
 When contacted, an Ola spokesperson said the company's "organisational redesign aims to rightsize all our operations as well as leverage skills sets and experience of mobility employees in available positions in new business verticals".
 The spokesperson, however, did not comment on the number of employees that could be impacted by the exercise.
 Ola is estimated to have about 4,500 people on its payrolls.
 "The resultant working model will form the foundation of the next chapter in Ola's growth journey as the company continues to grow its businesses. We also continue to attract the best talent across the board to support our growth and ambition," the spokesperson said.
 The spokesperson added that the restructuring is aimed at becoming "more nimble and have a sharper focus on growth and profitability".
 The development comes at a time when Ola, which is locked in a battle for market leadership in the Indian market against American rival Uber, narrowed its standalone losses in FY19 to Rs 1,160.27 crore from Rs 2,676.70 crore in the last financial year.
 ANI Technologies (which runs Ola) saw its total income rising close to 16 per cent to Rs 2,155.21 crore in FY19 from Rs 1,860.61 crore in the previous fiscal, as per regulatory documentrs filed with the Corporate Affairs Ministry.
 Its employee benefits expense has been lowered to Rs 413.83 crore in FY19 from Rs 495.69 crore in FY18.
 These are standalone numbers of ANI Technologies and do not include financials of other group entities like OLA Fleet Technologies, Ola Financial Services (Ola Money), Ola Electric Mobility, and international operations.
 Sources said Ola is looking at listing on Indian bourses in the next 18-24 months, and profitability would be an important criteria for the process.
 Ola can get listed on the BSE and NSE either directly or via Securities and Exchange Board of India-regulated Innovator's Growth Platform (IGP) for SMEs and startups.
 An IPO will help Ola investors like SoftBank, Tiger Global and Steadview Capital to exit or partially sell their stake in the company to return funds to their shareholders.
 Founded in 2011 by Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati, Ola offers services in more than 110 cities and claims to have over 10 lakh driver-partners across cabs, auto-rickshaws, and taxis on its platform. In 2018, Ola forayed into international markets like Australia, the UK and New Zealand. It competes with Uber in these markets as well. SR MR

Not just that, it is also cutting down on losses as Indian investors prefer to invest in companies that are not in the red. That is work-in-progress for this 9 year old startup. In the last financial year ending March 2019, its standalone losses were at ₹1,160 crore-- which is half of the ₹2,676.7 crore year before. “With a view to become more nimble and have a sharper focus on growth and profitability, we are redesigning the organisation to build a structure that strengthens and leverages our local and global scale and enables faster decision making across all of Ola's group companies,” said an Ola spokesperson. The Board makeover The startup is also reshaping itself to look more like a listed company. It is putting together a governance committee and an ethics committee a source told Business Insider. It is also bringing experienced people into the fold by hiring for top management level across its subsidiary companies – Ola Electric and Ola Financial services.

The Ola-backed company, which operates in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mysore, is also betting on electric mobility and aims to have 20 per cent of its fleet as EVs. "In the last 12 months, we have scaled the number of vehicles on the platform from 200 to 20,000 and the plan is to increase this further to one lakh in the next 12 months," Vogo CEO Anand Ayyadurai told . He further said the company will deepen its presence in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and is also exploring entering cities like Ahmedabad and Vijayawada. "This will be towards the end of the year," he said, adding the company currently has about 20,000 vehicles across 500 spots. Founded in 2016, the company recently raised USD 19 million (around Rs 136 crore) in a funding round led by LGT Lightstone with participation from existing investors like Matrix Partners and Kalaari Capital. Vogo had previously raised money from ride-hailing firm Ola and Stellaris Venture Partners. In December 2018, it had formed a strategic partnership with Ola to boost Vogo's supply by putting in one lakh scooters on its platform. Talking about its electric mobility plans, Ayyadurai said EVs form a big part of the company's focus. "Currently, the number is small, about 200 but over the next three years, as we scale to about 3 lakh two-wheelers, we expect about 20 per cent of them to be electric vehicles," he added. He said the company's current average revenue run rate is about USD 50 million and Vogo expects this to grow to USD 120 million in the next 12 months. "In the next 24 months, we would want to hit profitability," he added. Asked about recent layoffs, Ayyadurai said the company has been working on ensuring that Vogo is a low-friction platform. "Over the last 6-9 months, we have been able to automate our entire fleet. So users can come and using their phones, get access to bikes. We don't need someone manning the docks anymore. New features that we now build in will be incremental in nature and wouldn't really need us to start from scratch. Therefore, we undertook a restructuring and about 40 people were let go from the IoT team and a few other roles were shed," he said. He added that the company now has about 260 people. The depleting earnings for Maruti is affecting its Japanese parent Suzuki, who just announced a nearly 40% cut in its estimate for operating income this year. The shares of Maruti fell over 2% immediately after the announcement from Suzuki. The slowdown in car sales is not unique to Maruti. Car sales in India fell 20.5% in September compared to a year earlier. Aside from the economic slump in India, car buyers have shied away from showrooms expecting duty cuts and lower prices as well as fearing a loss of value for their new cars when the new emission norms kick in next year. This has been a debilitating blow for Suzuki for whom India makes for <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/auto/maruti-continues-to-drive-suzukis-global-growth-story/articleshow/67860711.cms?from=mdr">over half of all its global sale volumes</a>. “In view of the current sales environment, we lower our estimates for India domestic sales to +0.2% for FY2019 (from +5.4%) and +3.7% for FY2020 (+6.4%),” JPMorgan said in a report in June. The steady decline in car sales in India has been the worst in 18 years, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). In September 2001, after the tech bubble burst plunging the global economy into a temporary crisis, the sales had dropped down by 21.91%. In rural India, the decline in demand for cars is attributed to a protracted farm crisis, made worse by the ongoing water crisis and deficient monsoon in many parts. This has had a significant impact on Maruti, which has a deeper reach and penetration outside the big cities too.
