Paris: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi congratulated the Indian men's hockey team for winning the <keyword id="20257145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bronze-medal" source="keywords">bronze medal</keyword> at the <keyword id="20006192" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-Olympics" source="keywords">Paris Olympics</keyword> and announced a reward of Rs 15 lakh for each player in the squad. A brace from skipper <keyword id="20349470" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="harmanpreet-singh" source="keywords">Harmanpreet Singh</keyword> and PR Sreejesh's effortless saves secured a bronze medal for <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> at the Paris Olympics with a 2-1 win over Spain at the Yves du Manoir Stadium. Notably, India won consecutive bronze hockey medals for the first time in 52 years since the 1972 Munich Games. At a press conference, CM Majhi announced that a reward of Rs 10 lakhs has been allocated for the staff of the Indian men's hockey team. He also stated that Odisha's Amit Rohidas will be rewarded Rs 4 crore. "Indian Hockey team defeated Spain and won the bronze medal, the upcoming generation will remember this victory... I congratulate Amit Rohidas and all the other players for their performance, and I also announce that Rs 15 lakhs will be given to all the players and Rs 10 lakhs to the staff... As Cyclone ‘Dana’ approaches the coastal regions of <keyword id="6357961" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="odisha" source="Orion">Odisha</keyword> and West Bengal, the state government has ramped up its preparedness, setting up over 5,000 <keyword id="23651557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="relief-centers" source="keywords">relief centers</keyword> and planning to evacuate around 10 lakh people, as per Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Suresh Pujari. Pujari said in a statement, "This was the last review meeting to take stock of the situation and assess the preparedness at the grassroots level. As of now, more than 5000 relief centers have already been set up with all modern facilities to provide drinking water, food, milk to children, and medicine to the ailing people. We are expecting around 10 lakh evacuation." He also noted that the telecom infrastructure is being closely monitored, with assurances from the telecom department that there will be no network failures during the cyclone. Additionally, Tata Energy has guaranteed round-the-clock power supply, with backup systems in place to address any potential outages. Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has directed state ministers to oversee cyclone management in districts likely to be hit by ‘Dana.’ He urged local MLAs to remain in their constituencies to support district administrations with rescue and relief operations. In a post on X, the Odisha CM said, "In case of possible storm and heavy rainfall, all the MLAs must be present in their respective constituencies to coordinate with the district administration to deal with the storm and expedite relief and rescue operations. All the MLAs should try their best to stay with the people of their respective constituencies and give them the necessary support." <keyword id="23553727" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cyclone-Dana" source="keywords">Cyclone Dana</keyword> has already impacted transportation, with several trains being cancelled. Train services between Tirunelveli Junction and Shalimar, as well as Bhubaneswar and Rameswaram, have been suspended to ensure passenger safety. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is set to develop into a severe cyclonic storm. The storm is expected to make landfall along the Odisha-West Bengal coast by October 24, bringing heavy rains for at least three days. In preparation, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has activated a 24-hour Disaster Management Cell at its headquarters and divisional offices. Special teams have been deployed to ensure quick restoration of tracks, signaling systems, and electrification post-cyclone. ECoR General Manager Parmeshwar Funkwal chaired a meeting to ensure all departments are aligned for passenger safety. Diesel locomotives are also on standby in case of power disruptions. After heavy downpour a day ago, several low-lying areas in Tamil Nadu's Sellur and surrounding regions of Madurai district witnessed waterlogging on Saturday. The continuous rainfall caused significant flooding, severely disrupting the daily life. An unprecedented rainfall of 9.8 cm hit Madurai district bringing the daily lives to a halt. The downpour began last afternoon, but intensified dramatically after a few hours, continuing late into Friday night. Officials said that within just 15 minutes from 3 pm yesterday, 4.5 cm of rain was recorded. "There were continuous rains in Madurai city for the past 25 days in October. The average rainfall is 200 millimetres whereas since yesterday we had 260 millimetres of rainfall. There was <keyword id="22242487" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="intense-rainfall" source="keywords">intense rainfall</keyword> within a very short period due to which there was a lot of water that was coming into the city. But we are closely monitoring the situation. We are providing food drinking water and other medical aid to all the people. As of now, there are nine locations which are inundated," <keyword id="23696088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madurai-Commissioner" source="keywords">Madurai Commissioner</keyword> Dinesh Kumar said. Major roads including New Natham Road, and TPK Road were flooded while neighbourhood areas such as KK Nagar, Anna Nagar, Sellur, and Goripalayam, among others were also innundated. Meanwhile, Madurai District Collector Sangeetha declared a holiday on Saturday for schools in Madurai East and Madurai North revenue divisions given the unprecedented rainfall. Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing intense <keyword id="20891845" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="northeast-monsoon" source="keywords">northeast monsoon</keyword> rains, which have caused extensive damage in both Chennai and Madurai. Earlier, Chennai saw major waterlogging and flooding last week as well after an uninterrupted rainfall for an hour. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning in Odisha and West Bengal for <keyword id="23553727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyclone-DANA" source="keywords">cyclone DANA</keyword>. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday said that the state was "safe" and no causalities have been reported due to their constant efforts to prepare for the cyclone. Earlier, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) started an awareness campaign to inform the citizens about cyclone DANA in Odisha's Mahakalpada and Kendrapara districts.
