<ul><li>Odisha celebrates <keyword id="682718" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raja-festival">Raja festival</keyword> starting today.</li><li>The 3-day long festival celebrates <keyword id="555572" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Menstruation">menstruation</keyword> and womanhood. </li><li>It also signifies the onset of monsoon in the state. </li></ul>Though the country still struggles with taboos related to menstruation, the Indian state of Odisha commenced a 3-day long festival celebrating menstruation and womanhood. The Raja festival is celebrated by and for, women and girls. According to myths, during these three days of the Raja (pronounced raw-jaw) festival Mother Earth or Bhudevi undergoes menstruation. On the fourth day, a ceremonial bath takes place. Also called Mithuna Sankranti, which means the beginning of the Mithuna month, it signifies the first showers of monsoon in the state which readies the soil for productivity. During the festival, women and girls from across the state buy new clothes, play games and celebrate it by taking a break from work and routine. Agricultural work too comes to a standstill during these days. Almost every other household will adorn a swing, for the recreation of women and girls to enjoy during the festival. This festival has also become a talking point on social media lauding Odisha’s cultural heritage. This celebration means that it doesn’t shy away from the topic and mention of menstruation. Amidst taboos against menstruation, this Indian state celebrates it with a 3-day long festival

(Eds: Adding details, recoveries) Bhubaneswar, Jun 14 () The COVID-19 death toll in Odisha mounted to 11 with one more person succumbing to the disease while 186 new cases were detected in the state taking the total tally to 3,909, a health department official said on Sunday. A 50-year-old man from Ganjam district who had tested positive for COVID-19 died while undergoing treatment at a hospital, according to a statement by the health department. He was also suffering from diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the official said, adding Ganjam has so far reported six deaths, Khurda four and Cuttack one. Three other COVID-19 patients have also died in the state, but their deaths were attributed to other reasons. Among the 186 fresh cases are 13 members of the disaster response teams who returned from Kolkata after cyclone Amphan restoration works. With this, the number of disaster response personnel getting infected with the virus has increased to 149 in Odisha. Of the new cases, 171 patients were detected from quarantine centres where the returnees from different states are lodged. The maximum number of cases was reported from Kandhamal where 22 people were found COVID-19 positive, followed by 21 in Khurda, 16 each in Kalahandi and Bargarh, 15 in Gajapati, 13 in Mayurbhanj and 12 each in Jajpur and Cuttack. Meanwhile, 114 patients recovered from the deadly disease taking the total number of cured cases to 2,708 which is 69.27 per cent of the total tally. Up till June 13 midnight, 2,00,014 swab samples have been tested in the state, the official said. Of the total 3,909 COVID-19 cases in Odisha, 1,187 are active. So far, 13 of Odisha's 30 districts have reported more than 100 cases. Meanwhile, Ganjam district, which received the highest number of migrant workers, and has registered 682 cases, imposed lockdown from Sunday keeping in view the possibility of community spread of the disease. The district administration extended the lockdown period from existing 12 hours to 19 hours a day till June 30. While the state government has imposed 10 hours night curfew from 7 pm to 5 am across Odisha, Ganjam district allowed the people to venture out of the houses from 7 am to 12 noon for essential purposes. The weekend shutdown imposed by the government will also continue till June 30 in the district along with the lockdown in other days, sources said. "Total lockdown will follow in Ganjam district from today onwards up to June 30. Till today, there was no community spread of COVID-19 in the district," Ganjam district collector V A Kulange said. (Eds: Adding details &amp; recoveries) Bhubaneswar, Jun 13 () Odisha on Saturday reported its highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with 225 more people, including some police personnel, testing positive for the disease, taking the state's tally to 3,723, a Health Department official said. Of the fresh cases, 196 were reported from various quarantine centres, where people returning from other states were lodged, while 29 others were detected in contact-tracing exercises, he said. The maximum of 92 fresh cases was detected in Cuttack district, followed by 20 in Ganjam and 19 in Khurda. Puri district, which is preparing for the annual Rath Jatra of Lord Jagannath on June 23, also reported 15 cases. Cuttack district incidentally has the highest 186 active COVID case, followed by 128 in Ganjam in the state. Fifteen cases were found in Kandhamal, followed by 13 in Jagatsinghpur, 12 in Bolangir, nine in Mayurbhanj, seven each in Nayagarh and Dhenkanal, five in Bhadrak, four in Kendrapara, three in Kalahandi, two in Balasore and one each in Angul and Sundergarh. Officials said two senior police officers, including a sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) and an inspector-in-charge (IIC) rank officer, were among the five police personnel who tested positive for the deadly virus. Earlier, a total of 136 disaster response personnel of the Odisha Police were found to have the virus after their return from the cyclone restoration duty in West Bengal. Meanwhile, 120 patients recovered from the disease on Saturday, taking the total number of cured persons to 2,594. With this, the number of active cases in the state now stands at 1,116, while 2,594 people have recovered from the disease till Saturday, the official said. Ten people have died of the disease in the state. Three more patients had tested positive for the disease but they died of other reasons, the official said. Keeping in view the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state, several districts like Keonjhar, Khurda, Ganjam, Jatasinghpur and Cuttack have imposed prohibitory orders banning gathering of more than seven people during the celebration of the three-day Raja festival, which commences from Sunday.
