They're also laden with plastic flotsam that never biodegrades but keeps breaking into smaller pieces.But maybe the thing to remember as we near the unofficial start of summer isn't how severe <keyword id="12318689" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic-pollution" source="Orion">plastic pollution</keyword> has become but how much we have to lose. That's because new <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00139165221090154" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">research</a> indicates that visualizing beloved ocean inhabitants can make more of us willing to go on a plastic diet.It's certainly one we need. We're using more plastic and often recycling less of it. The amount of plastic in the world's oceans is <a href="https://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_The_New_Plastics_Economy.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">projected</a> to outweigh fish by 2050. And in 2020, the rate of plastic recycling in the US, which was already low, <a href="https://circularityinaction.com/2020PlasticRecyclingData" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">dropped</a> by 5.7% from the prior year.There might be a way we can use nature to help battle the plastic problem. Jiaying Zhao, a researcher with the University of British Columbia, and her colleagues found that placing pictures of marine life like sea turtles, whales, and dolphins above the recycling bins in a Vancouver office tower reduced overall <keyword id="12427295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic-waste" source="Orion">plastic waste</keyword> — either discarded or recycled — by 17% compared with before the signs went up.The photos of animals grappling with plastic waste in their aquatic homes were more effective than simple recycling signs or ones that asked office-goers to pledge to cut down on how much plastic they used.The decrease in plastic waste held even after the signs with animal pictures were removed, Zhao told Insider. She said that suggested office workers had begun to change their habits and perhaps do without things like single-use water bottles and utensils.When Zhao returned to the building to interview the workers who'd unwittingly been part of the experiment, those questioned by her team said they didn't remember seeing the animals on the posters."That was most surprising because I thought it would be memorable," Zhao said of the photos that showed a turtle chewing on plastic or a dolphin with a plastic bag caught on its fin. "If it elicited some kind of emotional response in me, and I felt bad for throwing away plastic stuff now — and I'm making a conscious effort to not do it — I should remember it, right?"Zhao said the animal pictures above the recycling bin appeared to be an effective nudge to change people's behaviors without proving so distressing that they were traumatized, as was the case with a viral <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wH878t78bw" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">video</a> several years ago of a turtle with a straw lodged in its nostril. Outrage over that video pushed some consumers and businesses to ditch plastic straws.<h2>Happy turtles could help change behavior</h2>In some cases, less dire images might win out. Zhao said subsequent experiments she and her colleagues conducted using images of "happy" turtles and dolphins appeared to be even more effective in changing people's actions than unsettling images.There could be broader lessons in all this for the environmental movement, Zhao said, because many awareness campaigns ask consumers to commit to shifting their behavior in some way."A lot of the tactics are like making a pledge," she said. "I pledge not to do this or not to buy this. That didn't work in our study."The researchers found that when people made an emotional connection to the animals — even if they didn't remember it — the effect was more powerful.Linda Escalante, the Southern California legislative director for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said giving thought to the influence of our actions, including our reliance on <keyword id="12149811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastics" source="Orion">plastics</keyword>, was essential to maintaining a successful coexistence with marine life. As it spins on its axis, Mimas wobbles slightly. Such oscillations may point to an ocean deep beneath the moon's ice, according to a new analysis.<div type="image" title="saturn rings up close with distant moon mimas in the background" height="1013" width="1005" msid="89050348" hostid="261"></div>"If Mimas has an ocean, it represents a new class of small, 'stealth' <keyword id="13007168" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ocean-worlds" source="Orion">ocean worlds</keyword> with surfaces that do not betray the ocean's existence," Alyssa Rhoden, a geophysicist who led the analysis at the Southwest Research Institute, said in a <a href="https://www.swri.org/press-release/swri-scientist-uncovers-evidence-internal-ocean-small-saturn-moon">press release</a>.Rhoden's finding was <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0019103521005091?via%3Dihub">published</a> online in the journal Icarus this week, in a paper co-authored with Matthew Walker of the Planetary <keyword id="11896083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="science" source="Orion">Science</keyword> Institute in Arizona.It's still no guarantee of a secret Mimas ocean. Researchers need to investigate the moon for further evidence."The work doesn't prove that there is a subsurface ocean on Mimas, but it does show that an ocean is perfectly consistent with the available data and our understanding of the physics, and the authors are appropriately cautious about this," Michael Bland, a space scientist who studies icy worlds at the US Geological Survey, and previously spoke with Rhoden about the research, told Insider in an email. "I think the study also opens as many questions as it answers."<h2>Underground oceans on distant moons could mean alien life in our <keyword id="11910185" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="solar-system" source="Orion">solar system</keyword></h2><div type="image" title="illustration underwater robot studying deep-sea vents in alien ocean" height="525" width="700" msid="89050349" hostid="261"></div>Mimas's oscillation could indicate that Saturn's gravity stretches and relaxes the planet as it spins — similar to the moon's gravity pulling Earth's water back and forth during tides. This process could build up energy deep inside Mimas, which is released as heat, warming its internal ice and creating an underground ocean of liquid water.Rhoden and Walker developed computer models to simulate that stretching process for Mimas, including how it would affect the stability of the moon's ice shell, and how that stretching fits in with Cassini's measurements of Mimas's oscillation. The model indicated that Saturn's tidal pull could maintain an ocean lying beneath 14 to 20 miles of ice on Mimas."This result is really intriguing because it implies that we can't tell which moons in the outer solar system may have subsurface oceans just from their surface geology," Bland said.Some moons — like Jupiter's Europa and Saturn's Enceladus — have plumes of water shooting up from their internal oceans, through their surface ice, and into space. In 2020, scientists also discovered evidence of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-discovers-ocean-dwarf-planet-ceres-could-host-life-2020-8">an underground ocean on a dwarf planet called Ceres</a>, which orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter. Salt deposits on Ceres's surface appear to have percolated up from liquid water below.These ocean worlds could have deep-sea hydrothermal vents that produce energy for living organisms. Such vents serve as an energy source for life at the bottom Earth's oceans, where there is no sunlight. If Mimas has an ocean, it might be able to host such ecosystems, too.<div type="image" title="hydrothermal vent noaa oar nurp" height="1760" width="1183" msid="89050351" hostid="261"></div>But the study isn't enough evidence to prove that. If the researchers' models are off — if Mimas's ice cools faster than they assumed, for example — there may be no Mimas ocean at all. "If the Cassini spacecraft had been able to fly closer to Mimas, it might have sensed a magnetic field generated by the Mimas ocean, which would be a direct confirmation that an ocean is present today," Steve Vance, who studies icy worlds at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told Insider in an email. "Hopefully a future mission will be able to look for an ocean in Mimas."

Saturn's 'Death Star' moon may have a secret ocean, revealing a new category of worlds that could host alien life

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12318687" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-ocean-cleanup" source="Orion">The Ocean Cleanup</keyword>, a nonprofit organization, aims to rid the world's oceans of plastic.</li><li>It recently debuted a device it said collected 20,000 pounds from the <keyword id="12318688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="great-pacific-garbage-patch" source="Orion">Great Pacific Garbage Patch</keyword>.</li></ul>It's been nearly a decade since Boyan Slat announced at age 18 that he had a plan to rid the world's oceans of plastic.Slat, now 27, is a Dutch inventor and the founder of the Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit that aims to remove 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040.That goal has often seemed unattainable. The Ocean Cleanup launched its first attempt at a plastic-catching device in 2018, but the prototype broke in the water. A newer model, released in 2019, did a better job of collecting plastic, but the organization estimated that it would need hundreds of those devices to clean the world's oceans.Scientists and engineers began to question whether the group could deliver on the tens of millions of dollars it had acquired in funding.But over the summer, the organization pinned its hopes on a new device, which it nicknamed Jenny. The installation is essentially an artificial floating coastline that catches plastic in its fold like a giant arm, then funnels the garbage into a woven funnel-shaped net. Two vessels tow it through the water at about 1.5 knots (slower than normal walking speed), and the ocean current pushes floating garbage toward the giant net.In early August, the team launched Jenny in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a trash-filled vortex between Hawaii and California. The garbage patch is the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world, encompassing more than 1.8 trillion pieces, according to the Ocean Cleanup's estimates.Last week, Jenny faced its final test as the organization sought to determine whether it could bring large amounts of plastic to shore without breaking or malfunctioning. The Ocean Cleanup said the device <a href="https://twitter.com/TheOceanCleanup/status/1448678660387614722">hauled 9,000 kilograms, or nearly 20,000 pounds, of trash</a> out of the Pacific Ocean - proof that the garbage patch could eventually be cleaned up."Holy mother of god," Slat <a href="https://twitter.com/BoyanSlat/status/1446619019394568192">tweeted</a> that afternoon, <a href="https://twitter.com/BoyanSlat/status/1446624133362733064">adding</a>, "It all worked!!!"<h2>How the new device works</h2>Slat's ocean-cleaning device has come a long way since the original prototype: a 330-foot-long floating barrier that resembled a long pipe in the water.The newest version is U-shaped and more flexible, like the lane dividers in a pool. Once its attached net fills with plastic (every few weeks or so), a crew hauls it up out of the water and empties the garbage onto one of the vessels that pull it.<div type="image" title="ocean cleanup" height="1439" width="2560" msid="87042232" hostid="261"></div>Once it's brought to shore, the plastic gets recycled. For now, the Ocean Cleanup is using the plastic to make $200 pairs of sunglasses, funneling the proceeds back into the cleanup efforts. Eventually, the organization hopes to partner with consumer brands to make more recycled products.Slat estimated that the team would need about 10 Jennys to clean up 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years. A single device can hold 10,000 to 15,000 kilograms of plastic, he <a href="https://twitter.com/BoyanSlat/status/1447840060372627457">tweeted</a>.<h2>Concerns about the ocean-cleaning device linger</h2><div type="image" title="Ocean Cleanup" height="1279" width="1920" msid="87042234" hostid="261"></div>The Ocean Cleanup system collects several types of floating garbage, including large containers, fishing nets, and <keyword id="12318690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="microplastics" source="Orion">microplastics</keyword> just a few millimeters in size. But it captures only plastic floating near the ocean's surface. A <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2020.576170/full">study published last year</a> suggested that there may be upwards of 30 times as much plastic at the bottom of the ocean as there is near the surface.The organization says large pieces of floating plastic will ultimately degrade into microplastics that are much harder to clean up.The Jenny device, of course, doesn't prevent plastic from entering oceans to begin with. <a href="https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/trust/archive/fall-2020/confronting-ocean-plastic-pollution">Researchers have estimated</a> that about 11 million metric tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year. By 2040, that figure could rise to 29 million metric tons. Ten Jenny devices would be able to collect 15,000 to 20,000 metric tons a year, according to the Ocean Cleanup.<div type="image" title="Ocean Cleanup" height="1707" width="2560" msid="87042237" hostid="261"></div>What's more, the boats that pull the Jenny device require fuel, meaning there's an environmental cost. The device was originally designed to passively collect plastic using the ocean's current, but that design led to it spilling too much of the <keyword id="11948582" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trash" source="Orion">trash</keyword> it had collected. The Ocean Cleanup says it's purchasing carbon credits to offset the towing vessels' emissions."Once plastic has gotten into the open ocean, it becomes very expensive and fossil-fuel intensive to get it back out again," Miriam Goldstein, the director of ocean policy at the think tank Center for American Progress, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/ocean-cleanup-struggles-fulfill-promise-scoop-up-plastic-sea-2021-09-16/">told Reuters last month</a>.But Slat <a href="https://twitter.com/BoyanSlat/status/1446887043724939265">tweeted</a> on Saturday that there's still time to address those concerns."Lots of things still to iron out," he wrote of his group's plastic-cleaning work, "but one thing we now know: deploy a small fleet of these systems, and one *can* clean it up."

Researchers found that the rate of warming in the upper 2,000 metres of the ocean in 2010 more than doubled that of 1960, and predicted that if actions were not taken, the rate of ocean warming would be four times larger than the current level by 2090, with dire consequences for all life on Earth, <keyword id="106387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xinhua-news-agency" source="Orion">Xinhua news agency</keyword> quoted the study published in Nature Reviews journal as saying. Not just to sea life but to the weather patterns across the planet and to the food chain. A warmer ocean leads to more intense storms, more deadly rainfall and flooding, and more powerful typhoons and hurricanes, it said. A consequence of warming is that parts of the planet will become drier, with more heat waves and droughts. Other parts will become wetter as rainfalls happen in bigger downbursts, according to the study. A "Hollywood Mode" rotates the Ocean's giant, 17.1-inch touchscreen from landscape to portrait orientation. While you have the added bonus of being out in the fresh air instead of in an enclosed area when you're at the beach, there are still risks of getting sick in ocean water and the beach environment. <h2>How ocean water affects bacteria and viruses </h2>Viruses need a host to survive and replicate, says <a href="https://marine.unc.edu/people/faculty/rachel-noble/">Rachel Noble, PhD,</a> distinguished professor at UNC Institute of Marine Sciences. So, you should be more concerned about catching infectious germs from other people, or beach facilities, than from being infected by ocean water. Plus, contagious diseases, such as the common cold, are often airborne. That means you're more likely to catch a contagious disease from respiratory droplets in the air — not in the water. However, some germs, particularly bacteria, are better suited for living in the ocean compared to viruses. Noble says this means that they can survive and even replicate on their own in a new environment. In ocean water, you're more likely to get infections if pathogens get into open wounds or are swallowed, says <a href="https://www.yalemedicine.org/doctors/manisha_juthani/">Manisha Juthani, MD</a>, an infectious disease specialist and associate professor of medicine and epidemiology at Yale School of Medicine.<h2>Most common ways to get sick from ocean water</h2>According to Juthani, there are a few common infections you can get from contaminated ocean water. If you swallow contaminated ocean water, this can include: <ul><li><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/crypto/illness.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cryptosporidiosis</a>: This is caused by a parasite called cryptosporidium. The most common symptom of this parasitic infection is watery diarrhea. According to the CDC, it's the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/crypto/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most common water-borne disease</a> for humans. </li><li>Shigellosis: This is a bacterial infection caused by <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/shigella/symptoms-causes/syc-20377529" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shigella bacteria</a>, also resulting most commonly in diarrhea. </li><li><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/e-coli/symptoms-causes/syc-20372058" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Escherichia coli (E.coli)</a> infection: This is another bacterial infection that causes diarrhea. </li></ul>If you have an open wound in contaminated ocean water, this can include: <ul><li>Vibrio vulnificus infections: Infections caused by <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vibrio/wounds.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vibrio bacteria</a> can be very serious, but are rare. If your wound is infected with this bacteria, you may experience fluid leaking from the wound, swelling, redness, and fever. If the infection is bad enough it can lead to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/groupastrep/diseases-public/necrotizing-fasciitis.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">necrotizing fasciitis</a>, which many refer to as the "flesh-eating disease." The bacteria is most common in <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vibrio/faq.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warm coastal water during May through October.</a></li><li>Staphylococcus aureus infections: Staph infections, specifically MRSA, can be caught from ocean water, Juthani says. <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mrsa/symptoms-causes/syc-20375336" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MRSA</a> is a type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can cause severe infection. Symptoms are painful red bumps that can turn into abscesses. </li></ul>As for how these bacteria live in the water, Juthani says that some of these bacteria naturally exist in the ocean, such as Vibrio. However, other bacteria like Cryptosporidium, E.coli, and Shigella are introduced into the water when human or animal feces contaminate it. Another possible way for germs to enter the ocean is through a sewage spill, Noble says.On top of these infections, Juthani says it's common to pick up respiratory infections like coughs or colds from close exposure to other people. <a href="https://www.insider.com/can-you-get-a-cold-in-the-summer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Just because it isn't cold and flu season, doesn't mean you can't get infected</a>, even at the beach. <h2>How to stay germ-free at the beach</h2>To avoid getting sick at the beach, the most crucial thing to do is to keep your distance from others. Juthani says it's important to stay at least six feet away from other parties. Try to park your beach chair away from crowds. The more secluded, the better. If you go in the ocean, make sure you keep your distance there, too, especially because people are unlikely to be wearing masks. If the designated swimming area is too crowded for you to have a six-foot bubble, it's not worth the risk. Don't play sports like beach volleyball or anything else that requires you to get in close proximity with people outside your household. The CDC <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/beaches-pools.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advises against sharing equipment and toys</a>, such as footballs, frisbees, and volleyballs, since these become high-touch surfaces when you're playing with them. You should also pack hand sanitizer or<a href="https://www.insider.com/does-hand-sanitizer-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> hand sanitizing wipes</a> to keep your hands clean if you aren't going to have access <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-long-should-you-wash-your-hands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to soap and water.</a> Be sure to clean your hands before eating, and avoid touching your face. To avoid germs in the water, don't drink the ocean water and avoid going in the ocean if you have open wounds. Juthani says if you get a cut at the beach, clean it off and seek medical attention if you start to notice it swelling or becoming infected.As long as you can follow these precautions, you can have a safe and fun beach day. If you notice any new symptoms after the beach, don't hesitate to see your doctor in case you have contracted an infection. Dorschel is a senior scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Germany and head of the regional center southern ocean of the seabed 2030 Project."It is a visual extension of the terrestrial world we know below the waves. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11893181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> produced just shy of 600 million pounds of <keyword id="12427295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic-waste" source="Orion">plastic waste</keyword> in 2020, a new Oceana report said.</li><li>An estimated 23.5 million pounds of that <keyword id="12367240" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic" source="Orion">plastic</keyword> ended up in the world's <keyword id="12229472" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oceans" source="Orion">oceans</keyword>, according to the report.</li></ul>In 2020, as more Americans than ever turned to Amazon amid COVID lockdowns, the company subsequently created more plastic plastic packaging waste than ever: 599 million pounds in total, <a href="https://oceana.org/reports/amazon-report-2021/">according to a new Oceana report</a>.Of that nearly 600 million pounds of plastic, Oceana estimates that "up to 23.5 million pounds" entered the world's oceans. That's equivalent to "dumping a delivery van payload of plastic into the oceans every 67 minutes," the report said.Oceana, which commissioned and published the report, is an international non-profit organization that's "dedicated to protecting and restoring the world's oceans on a global scale," the group's website said.Amazon disputed the report in a statement sent to Insider."Their calculations are seriously flawed," the statement said. "They have overestimated our plastics usage by more than 300%, and use outdated assumptions about the sources of plastic waste entering our oceans."The vast majority of the plastic entering the world's oceans comes from about 20 companies and doesn't include Amazon, <a href="https://sourceofplasticwaste.org/">according to the Plastic Waste Makers Index</a>. Instead, petrochemical companies like ExxonMobil, Dow Chemical and Sinopec are responsible for that waste.Just those three companies account for nearly 20% of the world's single-use plastic waste, according to the Index.Rather than companies like Amazon, which use plastics for packaging, the Plastic Waste Makers Index points to the source of the world's single-use plastics: The companies that produce the polymers used to create single-use plastics.Moreover, Amazon's reported contributions to plastic waste in the ocean account for a small fraction of the overall numbers. An estimated 17.6 billion pounds of new plastic enters the worlds oceans each year, the report said, compared with Amazon's 23.5 million pound contribution.The Plastic Waste Makers Index posits that, if petrochemical companies produced less plastic, companies like Amazon that use single-use plastics would be forced to use something else. Regardless, Amazon said in its statement that it's "making rapid progress in reducing or removing single-use plastics" from its packaging, and the company remains committed to "achieving net-zero carbon by 2040."
