It has become the largest hospitality chain in China, within two years of its entry into the market. The company is the process of investing $100 million out of the $600 million it had earlier committed to China. It is present in over 337 cities and has 500,000 rooms in the country. OYO already hired 10,000 people and created for 200,000 jobs indirectly, in the market. The six-year-old startup has much higher ambitions in sight – to become the world’s largest hotel chain, as conveyed by its CEO Aditya Ghosh earlier this <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/former-indigo-chief-is-aiming-to-make-the-6-year-old-oyo-the-worlds-largest-hotel-chain/articleshow/67536612.cms">year</a>. OYO has over 175,000 rooms in India. It is also adding 60,000 rooms every month, globally. Earlier this month, OYO said that it will invest $300 million to expand its footprint in the United States – into cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. It already has 50 hotels across 15 states in the US. It is currently present in cities like Dallas, Houston, Augusta, Atlanta and Miami. Indian unicorn OYO has conquered China and is now the country’s largest hotel chain

<ul><li>The Indian hospitality unicorn <keyword id="2808667" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO">OYO</keyword>’s founder <keyword id="1670338" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ritesh-Agarwal">Ritesh Agarwal</keyword> wants to buy back shares worth $1.5 billion, according to reports. </li><li>Agarwal holds 9.43% in the hospitality startup, while SoftBank, the Japanese investment firm, controls 45.69% of the company. </li><li>According to OYO’s clauses, SoftBank cannot take up more than 49.99% in the company without approval from Agarwal and his early investors. </li></ul>In an unprecedented move in the Indian startup ecosystem, OYO founder Ritesh Agarwal is looking to buy back shares worth $1.5 billion according to an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/oyo-founder-in-talks-to-buy-back-1-5-billion-shares/articleshow/70121644.cms">ET report.</a> The report cited sources to say that the founder is looking buy shares from its early investors like Sequoia and Lightspeed Venture Partners, to have greater control of his company. In an email response, an OYO spokesperson said, “As a company policy, we don’t comment on speculations. We have no further comments.” Agarwal reportedly wants to raise his stake in the firm to over 30%. Currently, Agarwal holds 9.43% in the hospitality startup, while SoftBank, the Japanese investment firm, controls 45.69% of the company. The report further says that the founder is looking to raise $2 billion of secured debt through investors in India, Japan and Europe. Meanwhile, early investor Lightspeed has 13.4% stake, while Sequoia Capital has 10.24%. According to information sourced by paper.vc, Article 21.6 of Oyo’s Articles of Association prohibit Softbank from, directly or indirectly, acquiring more than 49.99% of the fully diluted share capital of the company, without the consent of Ritesh Aggarwal, Greenoaks, Lightspeed and Sequoia Capital. SoftBank has been an investor in OYO since a long time now. It was Softbank's investment that led OYO into the Indian unicorn club with a $5 billion valuation in September 2018, a huge jump from the $900 million valuation it had until then. Reports say that OYO is once again looking at raising funds through debt and primary, secondary transactions, which could take its valuation to over $10 billion. OYO is making a march to the top US cities with $300 million and blessings from Softbank and Airbnb

Online learning platform <keyword id="6630114" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unacademy">Unacademy</keyword> is now valued at $3.44 billion after the latest round of fundraising, where it got investments to the tune of $440 million. Over the last 18 months, the valuation of the <keyword id="9578177" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unacademy-group">Unacademy Group</keyword> has risen almost 10 times, the company reportedly said in a statement. This was the Series H round of funding for Unacademy where Aroa Ventures, the family office of hotel chain <keyword id="2808667" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO">OYO</keyword>’s Founder Ritesh Agarwal, and Deepinder Goyal, Co-Founder and CEO at Zomato, participated. Some angel investors of Unacademy have exited in this round. Aside from these, existing investors like General Atlantic, Tiger Global and <keyword id="3749718" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="softbank-vision-fund">Softbank Vision Fund</keyword> put in more money.This is the second investment by Tiger Global, and General Atlantic who increased their stake in Unacademy in January this year. The different shades of India’s booming edtech The six-year old startup founded by Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh and Roman Saini, Unacademy has a growing network of more than 50,000 registered educators and over 62 million learners, in 14 Indian languages across 5,000 cities. Unacademy is known for its offerings that help students prepare for competitive exams and it has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the shift to online learning. Unacademy differentiates itself from Byju’s, which relies on pre-recorded content, and Vedantu that is known for its live-tutoring. India’s edtech industry, which had an annual revenue pool of $700 million at the end of March 2020, saw its business double in the following year due to the pandemic, according to data from Goldman Sachs. The global investment bank expects the entire edtech space to be worth $30 billion dollars by March 2024 as Indians spend the most on education, as a proportion of household consumption, after China. Unacademy has been acquiring other startups amidst an edtech boom Late last month, Unacademy announced that it has acquired game streaming platform <keyword id="11725251" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rheo-TV">Rheo TV</keyword>. Infact, with its latest valuation of a little under $5 billion, the Gurugram-based company is now the most valuable hotel chain in South Asia, easily leapfrogging the Taj and Oberoi chains, which are valued at around $2 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively. It is also the country’s second-most valuable startup after Paytm. Flipkart has been ruled out of consideration following its acquisition by Walmart. Solid growth While it’s latest funding round could be an indication of the valuation bubble that India’s startup ecosystem finds itself in, the company has recorded a commendable level of growth since its founding. It currently offers nearly 211,000 rooms in 350 cities in five countries. It has about 8,500 hotels across 230 cities India with around 87,000 rooms in 171 cities in <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>. This marks an impressive turnaround for a company that was struggling with vacancies and complaints of poor customer service just a few years ago. This caused it to shift gears from the AirBnb model of connecting customers with hotel operators to a franchising model. Through its Townhouse brand, which was launched in early 2017, OYO Rooms focused on offering budget hotel experiences to customers in properties that were fully operated by the company employees. Hence, it got full control of its inventory of rooms in order to improve the customer experience. Under the latest funding round, OYO will receive around $800 million upfront with an additional commitment of $200 million. Softbank was joined by OYO’s existing investors Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Ventures in the latest round. What will OYO use the money for? The investment will help OYO Rooms accelerate its overseas expansion. It has been expanding its operations outside India into China as well as Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia and also it has its sights set on Europe and West Asian markets like the UAE. Earlier this month, Agarwal told Reuters that he planned to invest $5 million to launch <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-hotels-oyo/indias-largest-hotel-chain-oyo-to-expand-into-britain-idUKKCN1LZ1FX">in 10 cities in the UK</a> by 2020. OYO plans to offer 5,000 hotel rooms by then, backed by a staff of 100 people. The company is set to open its first two properties in London next month. However, the bulk of OYO’s financial resources will be focused on its two main markets - India and China. Agarwal reportedly plans to invest an additional $600 million in gaining further ground in China, especially in Tier-4 and Tier-5 towns.

A valuation <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/softbanks-oyo-reveals-over-330-mln-annual-loss-revenue-surges-valuation-report/articleshow/72226878.cms">report</a> sourced on OYO’s financials show that the company has reported a loss of ₹2,384.7 crore, almost six times higher than its losses a year earlier. Meanwhile, its operating revenue grew three-fold to ₹6456.9 crore. Whereas the company’s valuation has doubled to $10 billion between September 2018 and now. The magical boost in valuation came from the $700 million invested by founder and CEO <keyword id="1670338" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ritesh-Agarwal">Ritesh Agarwal</keyword> in October 2019. The money went into buying back shares from existing investors at a higher price, boosting the company’s value. But the company has gone on the defensive. “These are not the final audited financials and the same will be issued later by the company along with the annual report that we issue every year and file with the RoC as well,” OYO spokesperson told Business Insider. What started as a hotel room aggregator, OYO has gone on to buy @Leisure Group, an Amsterdam-based vacation rental company, for an estimated $407 million, Hooters Casino in Las Vegas for $135 million, and an 80% stake in Japanese rental apartment operator MDI, along with SoftBank, <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Opinion/Oyo-s-business-model-is-looking-a-lot-like-WeWork-s">which reportedly cost over</a> $100 million. Founded by Ritesh Agarwal, OYO is on its way to hit its ambitious target of being the world’s largest hotel chain. It helps that they are already South Asia’s largest hotel chain by the number of rooms. OYO also recently launched OYO Partner Engagement Network (OPEN) through which it set up four regional Partner Advisory Councils which “provides a platform to discuss and determine micro and macro issues driving the future of hospitality in India”. Yet the past few months have been turbulent. From multiple FIRs to an uprising from hotel owners, OYO is now dealing with multiple cases. Cheating case against Agarwal and others Recently, a Bengaluru <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/cheating-case-against-oyo-founder-ritesh-agarwal-6-others/articleshow/71905131.cms">hotelier</a> filed a cheating case against Agarwal and six others claiming that the OYO hasn’t paid him his dues. According to the complaint, the hotelier has claimed that OYO was supposed to pay him ₹7 lakh a month for room bookings but failed to do so since May 2019. "Our lawyers are looking into the matter and will be taking strong legal action as these claims are incorrect and defamatory in nature. OYO Hotels &amp; Homes will initiate appropriate criminal proceedings against the Bengaluru owner who is sensationalising a civil dispute to attract attention. On studying a similar matter where an FIR was wrongfully filed in September, the honourable Karnataka High Court recently stayed the adverse actions via an injunction in Bengaluru. We, therefore, have strong reasons to repose our faith in the justice system," said a statement from OYO. OYO also claims to have an annual retention as high as 99.5% across the chain in India &amp; South Asia. Incidents at OYO Hotels Recently, a national level shooter was found dead in an OYO hotel reportedly due to electrocution. On the other hand, an employee in a Gurugram-based OYO hotel was also accused of <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/electrocution-case-oyo-says-it-is-cooperating-with-police-authorities/articleshow/71607725.cms">raping</a> a guest. In both cases, OYO has said that it is working with the authorities and helping with the investigation. Most of the protests have been about clearance of dues. Another point <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/as-softbank-oyo-booms-over-10000-hotels-cry-foul-and-check-out/story/383337.html">raised by hotel owners</a> has been that while OYO charges 20% franchise fee on room revenues, it ultimately takes more money through different sources that aren’t disclosed initially. Trouble in America too OYO, after having had a great run in China, also expanded to the US. It has even taken over a Hooters hotel in Las Vegas and rebranded it to be an OYO hotel. US-based media outlet <a href="https://skift.com/2019/10/24/budget-chain-oyo-can-be-a-nightmare-for-u-s-hotel-operators-despite-its-hype/">Skift</a> has reported that several hotel owners complained that OYO’s partner management system didn’t work properly along with non payment of dues. CCI investigation MakeMyTrip and Oyo’s commercial agreement is being investigated by the Competition Commission of India. The alleged dominance that they would enjoy is now under scanner. And prima facie, MakeMyTrip is identified as ‘dominant’ in the online travel market while OYO holds the same position in the hotels market. The joint effect of their partnership could alter the way the market operates. “OYO has been prima facie found to be a significant player in the ‘market for franchising services for budget hotels in India,” said the report.
