The local unit finally settled for the day at 83.50 (provisional), higher by 2 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee stayed range-bound and settled 1 paisa lower at 83.52 against the US dollar. "The Indian rupee traded flat on weak domestic markets and a strong US dollar. The overnight jump in <keyword id="20024983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil-prices" source="keywords">crude oil prices</keyword> also put pressure on the rupee. However, likely dollar inflows supported the rupee earlier in the day," said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was at 105.70, higher by 0.15 per cent, as the US dollar gained on hawkish Fedspeak and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. "We expect the rupee to trade with a slight negative bias amid strength in the US dollar and selling pressure by foreign investors. However, mixed to positive Asian and European markets may support the rupee at lower levels. "Any intervention by RBI or bond related foreign inflows may support rupee at lower levels. Traders may take cues from weekly unemployment claims data from US and speeches from Fed officials. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 83.30 to Rs 83.75," Choudhary said. The Fed mandates this activity between banks to ensure they meet their reserve requirements. That is, it requires each bank to maintain enough cash on hand, plus a reserve balance with the central bank, to cover a certain percentage of its deposits and other liabilities on every business day. These regulations are to make sure that a bank's account-holders always have ready access to their money. But what motivates the committee to periodically change it? How does the Fed use it as an economy-adjusting tool?When it needs to stimulate economic growth — production, spending, expansion — the Fed lowers the fed funds rate. This move makes it cheaper for banks to borrow money and maintain their reserves. New Delhi, Nov 28 () Markets regulator Sebi on Thursday allowed clearing corporations to make investments in overnight funds. Overnight funds are open-ended debt mutual fund schemes that invest in securities with a maturity of one day.
 However, the combined investments made by clearing corporations in liquid funds and overnight funds should not exceed a limit of 10 per cent of the total investible resources held by them, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in a circular.
 Further, the investments in overnight funds shall also be considered as liquid assets for the purpose of calculation of net worth of a clearing corporation.
 The move comes following a review of investment avenues available for clearing corporations and based on the feedback received from various stakeholders.
 Earlier in 2016, the regulator had asked clearing corporations to invest their money broadly in fixed deposits, government securities and liquid schemes of debt mutual funds in order to ensure the highest degree of safety.
 The fixed deposits should be made with banks having a net worth of more than Rs 500 crore.
 Clearing houses are associated with an exchange to handle the confirmation, settlement and delivery of transactions, fulfilling the main obligation of ensuring transactions in a prompt and efficient manner. SP
