The sci-fi show throws humanity headfirst into a chaotic dance with an alien civilisation from a three-sun system, where their very existence is a constant struggle for survival. With equal parts humor and suspense, Bodkin promises a captivating journey that will keep you guessing until the very end. If you’re looking to embark on a wild ride filled with unforgettable characters, shocking twists, and a whole lotta Irish charm, you might want to give this show (which was actually produced by the Obamas) a chance. Bodkin got 7/10 on IMDb and 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. Honourable mention: <keyword id="20215793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Demon-Slayer" source="keywords">Demon Slayer</keyword> is back with its fifth season and the first two episodes are already out. The hot social media platform after Brazil's X ban: Bluesky 

When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bob-iger-ceo-disney-return-insiders-anxious-losing-faith-2023-11?IR=C">Bob Iger returned to Disney</a> in late 2022 for his second tour as CEO, the company was in dire straits. It had just reported poor earnings, was scrambling from unpopular business moves, and was left reeling from previous CEO Bob Chapek's bad press. Just a year later, Iger began to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bob-iger-disney-strong-earnings-taylor-swift-espn-streaming-fortnite-2024-2">put the Mouse House back in order</a>: He delivered a strong earnings report in February, announced partnerships with Epic Games and Taylor Swift, and trumpeted a sports streaming <keyword id="19971167" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="platform" source="keywords">platform</keyword>. "We have entered a new era," Iger effused to investors during his February earnings call, a nod to the news that Swift's "Eras Tour" film would stream exclusively on Disney+. In response, the company's stock price got a much-needed boost, and investors <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-bob-iger-wins-proxy-vote-against-nelson-peltz-trian-2024-4">rejected a public challenge</a> by the activist investor Nelson Peltz to exert control over the company. Investors' celebration, however, was short-lived. Amid the declining TV business, dismal box-office numbers, and the need to name a successor, Iger continues to face significant problems. Kids increasingly prefer to zone out for hours watching free short-form videos instead of full-length TV episodes and movies. In April, Nielsen estimated, kids 2 to 11 watched three times as much YouTube as Disney+ content. Meanwhile, Disney said in 2022 that over 60% of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pitch-deck-how-disney-selling-advertising-disney-plus-basic-december-2022-9">Disney+ subscribers were adults without kids at home</a>. "YouTube is their primary platform of choice," said Alexia Raven, a former Warner Bros. Discovery research vice president who cofounded the consultancy Maverix Insights &amp; Strategy, where she studies kids' viewing behavior. "It meets them where they are and meets their passions in nuanced ways. It really has shifted the entertainment landscape." Media companies have increasingly incorporated YouTube into their distribution strategies by releasing shorts and trailers there, but it's not an ideal setup. Companies don't control the distribution or revenue from their content, and it's not clear whether YouTube works as an on-ramp to their own properties in the same way the Disney Channel did for Disney. Kids watching Disney clips on YouTube may have no need for Disney+. Meanwhile, the movie theater is also faltering. The company had a string of box-office bombs and has focused more on creating content just for its streaming service. But by reaching for streaming dominance, Disney seems to be missing kids in a big way. In some ways, Disney has the same challenges as other long-standing media and entertainment companies like Comcast and Paramount. For years, the conventional wisdom was that they had to get bigger to compete with the tech giants like Google and Netflix. But streaming, advertising, and the box office <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bob-iger-plan-smaller-disney-could-work-potential-pitfalls-2023-8">aren't panning out</a> the way they were supposed to. For Disney, the problem is existential. Without a steady stream of kids growing up on Disney content, the downstream effects for the other arms of its business — such as theme parks and merchandise — look grim. Unless it can recapture the hearts of Gen Alpha, the House of Mouse risks losing its next generation of fans to other brands. Over the course of a century, Disney transformed a quaint cartoon about a mouse into a sprawling $185 billion empire. It became synonymous with wholesome entertainment for millions of children around the world. Now, not so much. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-04-07/these-are-the-most-popular-tv-shows-of-the-streaming-era?sref=BWbpWjRm">most popular kids show for the past two years</a> was "Cocomelon," a show made by Moonbug Entertainment that airs on Netflix. Moonbug — which was acquired in 2021 by two former Disney execs — has quickly gained on giants like Disney, Paramount, and Comcast, clinching the No. 5 spot for kids' entertainment on YouTube in 2023, according to Tubular, a social video analytics company. On YouTube, shows featuring child stars reign supreme — channels like "Kids Diana Show" (123 million subscribers) and "Ryan's World" (37 million) have each captured the attention of millions of children. "Kids are growing up seeing themselves on these platforms; they're seeing kids like themselves creating the content," Liz Huszarik, a former research executive vice president at WarnerMedia who is now a managing partner at Maverix, said. It's a trend that parents like Nick Macknight, a streaming media executive who lives in Dallas, knows firsthand. He used to try to get his daughters, ages 2 and 4, to watch his favorite Disney movies from childhood over top YouTube shows like "Kids Diana Show." "I tried desperately because I love 'The Lion King' and 'Aladdin,' but they will just say, 'I'd rather watch something on YouTube,'" he said. This drift toward YouTube threatens a foundational gateway to the wider world of Disney. The Disney Channel, which started in 1983, used to be a marketing juggernaut for all things Disney — kids were introduced to stars like Justin Timberlake and Zendaya and hit TV movies like "High School Musical." But it's become just another casualty of cable's erosion. Disney is certainly trying to meet kids where they are. To promote "Disney Junior's Ariel," it released a series of shorts on YouTube. And earlier this year, it launched a short-form Winnie the Pooh series on YouTube to test interest in a long-form version. In Disney's biggest games investment ever, Iger bought a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games to bring Disney characters to mega-popular games like "Fortnite," where kids and young adults are increasingly spending their time and money. The bet is that efforts like these will entice kids to seek out more content on Disney's own platforms. But while Disney is now the top media company on YouTube, gaining traction on other companies' platforms isn't really a solution to its problem. (Disney declined to comment on the record for this story.) Kids are known to watch things on repeat and play a key role in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/01/27/kids-streaming-content-vital-to-subscriber-growth.html">keeping their families subscribing</a> to streaming services, which makes them especially valuable to media companies. But it can take a long time to develop new franchises that stick in order to realize that lifetime value. Another problem is that the number of kids in the US is rapidly shrinking. Increasingly, media companies are throwing in the towel. When Netflix's growth hit a speed bump in 2022, it and other streamers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hbo-max-netflix-amazon-cancel-kids-series-animation-2022-9">pulled back on kid programming</a> as they promised investors to make streaming profitable. In some ways, Disney has followed suit. It's branched out beyond kids into sports, news, and general entertainment, moving to acquire the remaining third of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-bought-owns-hulu-valuation-explained-whats-next">Hulu</a> that it didn't own in 2023. It is also investing more in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-disney-parks-top-destinations-millennials-gen-z-2023-9#:~:text=On%20a%20given%20day%2C%2040,a%20former%20parks%20executive%20says">growing "Disney adult" market</a>, which makes up about half of its theme-park visitors — a figure that an insider said had gradually increased over time. Diversifying, though, has had its challenges. Like the rest of traditional TV, Disney's TV business is in decline. The highly profitable Experiences arm, which houses its theme parks and resorts along with merchandise tie-ins, has grown more important over time, contributing 70% of the company's operating income in 2023 compared with less than 25% a decade prior, per Bernstein. But those figures can be misleading. For the past decade, the division has increasingly relied on higher spending per guest rather than increased attendance, Bernstein found. While park and resort attendance has stayed relatively flat, spending per guest grew 7%, raising <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/19/business/media/disney-parks-expansion.html">questions on Wall Street</a> about how much growth is left in parks. In theory, going after adult audiences — which, unlike kids, advertisers can freely target — could help Disney get its streaming business in the black, but it also puts Disney up against a bigger field of competitors like Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery's Max — platforms that have a head start since they aren't seen as "just for kids" the way Disney is. Iger himself has acknowledged that general entertainment content tends to be undifferentiated compared with Disney's franchises. For Disney to secure its future, it needs to replenish its pipeline of young fans. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any easy fixes. When he first became CEO of the company in 2005, Iger went on a massive buying spree, snapping up Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. But today, there's no big equivalent company for it to buy to shore up its kid appeal. Disney already distributes the global kids phenomenon "Bluey," but it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-04-03/is-bluey-ending-disney-s-worried-biggest-kids-show-ever-is-at-risk?sref=BWbpWjRm&amp;embedded-checkout=true">doesn't have the merchandising or theme-park rights</a> to it. It's far too soon to count Disney out, though. The company has survived plenty of challenges over the decades, from the Great Depression to expensive flops like "The Black Cauldron" and "Mars Needs Moms" to criticisms over its portrayal of minority groups and a surreal public battle with Florida's Gov. Ron DeSantis over what critics dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" law. One silver lining is the strength of Disney's franchises. The company had six of the top 10 streaming movies of 2023, including 2016's wildly popular "Moana," "Encanto" (2021), and "Elemental" (2023), according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nielsen.com/insights/2024/streaming-unwrapped-streaming-viewership-goes-to-the-library-in-2023/">Nielsen</a>. And it's still captivating fans with "Star Wars" and Marvel spinoffs like "Andor" and "Ahsoka," which dominate Disney+. After a string of box-office flops, Iger has been public about his plan to course-correct, starting with making fewer titles and leaning on sequels over original titles. In June, Pixar's "Inside Out 2" became the year's biggest-grossing box-office hit, just a week and a half after its release. Its other highly anticipated films of the year are also sequels or spinoffs, like "Moana 2" and "Deadpool &amp; Wolverine." Disney is also shifting resources from digital series to theatrical releases that can make a big splash, as evidenced by recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/media/pixar-layoffs-disney-cuts-663b5cc8?mod=djemCMOToday">Pixar cuts</a> that targeted teams focused on streaming. Disney's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/disney-star-wars-marvel-profits-nelson-peltz-1235852695/">reliance on franchises</a> comes with risk, though. When Marvel releases stumbled last year, it cast a pall on the company and left Iger vulnerable to losing control of the company. To regain its dominance in the future, Disney will need some fresh stories. Whether all this can help Disney get ahead of changing consumer behavior is an open question. Kids preferring short-form videos on YouTube over full-length episodes and movies is a problem that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/streamers-like-netflix-disney-max-have-a-gen-z-problem-2024-3">Disney doesn't seem to be able to solve</a>. When Macknight, the Dallas media executive, sat his kids down to prepare them for a family trip to Disneyland, he showed them a video about the famed theme park. The platform they watched it on? <ul class="summary-list"><li>The Justice Department says Russia used American influencers to spread Russian propaganda.</li><li>The FEC has outdated rules around influencers promoting political content for profit.</li></ul>Russia has long used social media to launch disinformation campaigns to sway the American public during elections.While some social media companies have worked to prevent the spread of questionable content, Russia seems to have found a new, perfectly legal way in: influencers.The Justice Department on Wednesday filed conspiracy charges against two Russian nationals who Attorney General Merrick Garland said engaged in a "$10 million scheme to create and distribute content to US audiences with hidden Russian government messaging." He called it a Russian attempt to "exploit our country's free exchange of ideas in order to covertly further its own propaganda efforts."Daniel Weiner, the Elections and Government Program director at the Brennan Center for Justice, told Business Insider the case demonstrates a "huge gap" in political advertising rules.The Federal Elections Commission requires clear ad disclaimers on broadcast, newspaper, and internet content detailing who paid for the ad. But the rules don't extend to paid influencers. In January, the Brennan Center sent a legal <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/comment-fec-adopt-updated-rules-requiring-transparency-paid-influencers">letter</a> to the FEC asking it to add disclosure requirements for when candidates pay influencers for their online support."It illustrates the potency of influencers and other more novel methods of political communication as tools for foreign interference in the electoral process," Weiner told Business Insider.The two plaintiffs, both employees at RT, a Russian media organization, attempted to "influence the American public by secretly planting and financing a content creation company on US soil," which posted videos on X, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, according to the Justice Department.The company in question is Tenet Media. The Justice Department didn't name the company in its filing, but there were enough details for anyone paying attention to figure it out. The Tennessee-based group publishes content from podcasters and influencers like Tim Pool and Benny Johnson, who said they <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pro-trump-influencers-say-had-no-idea-russia-funding-videos-2024-9">did not know about Tenet's ties to Russian</a> funding. Garland confirmed in a press conference that Tenet did not disclose those ties to its influencers.While there are disclosure requirements for online political ads, they mostly apply "to those traditional pop-up ads that you would see that were prevalent 10 years ago or so," Weiner said."For influencers and for other really novel forms of communication, there's really almost no transparency, and that's a problem. There's no real transparency via regulation, and there's limited-to-no transparency even in terms of the voluntary rules that major online platforms have adopted," he said.Social media platforms have adopted advertising libraries to increase ad transparency. As FCC chairman, Carr would be one of the federal government's top regulators — one whose decisions would have significant implications for Musk's bottom line, especially when it comes to his space technology company, SpaceX.In 2022, the FCC <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-starlink-subsidy-bid-rejected-fcc-2022-8">denied</a> SpaceX nearly $886 million in government subsidies to provide satellite internet access in rural areas via the company's Starlink service. The panel argued that Starlink, along with another internet service provider that was denied the funds, had "failed to demonstrate" that they "could deliver the promised service." That's despite Starlink gaining preliminary approval in 2020, during Trump's first term.Carr <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fcc-commissioner-brendan-carr-elon-musk-spacex-starlink-rejected-subsidy-2022-8">blasted</a> the commission's rejection at the time, saying it was "without a lawful basis."Now, Carr will be in a position to give a boost to satellite internet providers like Starlink. In October, he <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/18/elon-musk-brendan-carr-fcc-starlink-00184260">told POLITICO</a> that regulators "should not be putting brakes or harassing any US-based satellite company" and that they should back them up instead.While the $886 million in government subsidies SpaceX applied for in 2022 is likely lost, Biden's $42.45 billion broadband expansion program is still on the table.The broadband expansion program prioritizes earthbound projects that lay fiber-optic cables to offer high-speed internet to underserved areas in the US. It's unclear where space-based initiatives like Starlink fit into the picture.Trump's upcoming administration may have the opportunity to steer the program in a new direction that favors satellite projects more. And with Carr's recent nomination, the prospect of a Starlink scale-up looks increasingly promising.That said, Starlink only came onto the satellite scene in 2018. It's still proving itself as a viable internet service provider and is relatively expensive for the quality, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnn.com/cnn-underscored/home/starlink-internet-review">CNN</a> reported in August."We have no proof of concept that shows that [Starlink] could serve millions of Americans or more, on a widespread basis, on a simultaneous basis," said Michael Romano, the executive vice president of rural telecom trade group NTCA told POLITICO in October.Carr's nomination will have to be confirmed by the Senate. Telegram, in a statement released shortly after his arrest, said Durov has "nothing to hide" and called the CEO's detainment "absurd."Outside the US, Alon-Beck noted, there's more privacy protection for consumers, more enforcement of content moderation laws, as well as different types of regulation, which forces tech executives to reconsider their approach to content moderation on their platforms to mitigate the risk of overstepping local laws and facing legal consequences — as Musk did in Brazil, and Durov did in France."In those markets, you have to comply. Nobody is above the law — not even Elon Musk," Alon-Beck said, adding that it doesn't matter what Musk feels about international laws, or how they compare to American regulations: "The point is, when you have global businesses and you're operating outside the US, you do have to listen to those laws or pay the price. If Elon wants to be able to travel freely, he'll have to comply, just like others will have to."Musk has previously complied with content moderation requests from other governments, including the increasingly authoritarian nations of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/free-speech-censorship-elon-musk-throttled-tweets-turkey-presidential-election-2023-5">Turkey</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/musk-twitter-no-actual-choice-censorship-governmental-request-free-speech-2023-5">India</a>. In 2023, he indicated he would abide by the European Union's rulebook on content moderation, known as the Digital Services Act, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/musk-twitter-will-respect-eu-content-moderation-rulebook/">Politico</a> reported.Alon-Beck said Durov's arrest served as a warning by French authorities to all tech executives who try to skirt local regulations, especially those related to content moderation on social media."I think that point was very well taken — or should be taken — by others," Alon-Beck said.After the Telegram CEO was arrested, Musk quickly chimed in on the situation with a series of posts on X, including adding a "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-telegram-ceo-pavel-durov-arrest-france-free-speech-2024-8">FreePavel</a>" hashtag to a clip of Durov being interviewed by Tucker Carlson.Alon-Beck told BI that, in countries like France with strict laws around content moderation, Musk is no different than Durov, and she would expect he could be arrested if he continues to push the boundaries of local content moderation laws."It doesn't matter whether it's Instagram, or X, or Telegram — they're all platforms in those countries that are doing things differently than what we do here in the US," Alon-Beck said. "It doesn't matter if I agree or disagree. The point is, they have those enforcement systems — and as you can see, they're strict about them."Representatives for X, Telegram, and the Brazilian Supreme Court did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

Elon Musk has to be picky about where he fights for free speech, corporate law  expert says

Its stated purpose: To figure out what its shoppers thought of the city's new law on gig work.But in the preamble to the survey, Instacart indicated it already had thoughts about how things were going. "Some shoppers are seeing a negative impact on earnings, limited service areas for batches, and decreased order frequency," the email read. "That's why it's crucial we hear from you about exactly how these changes have influenced you and your <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instacart-shopper-works-18-hour-days-road-trips-cities-orders-2023-8">work with Instacart</a>."The survey is one example of how Instacart, DoorDash, and other gig work companies have been pushing back on a law that took effect in Seattle this past January. The law, one of multiple proposals known collectively as "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seattle-gig-worker-new-law-advocate-instacart-job-deactivation-2024-2">Pay Up</a>," most notably aims to increase delivery workers' pay to a rate comparable with Seattle's $19.97 minimum wage.The companies lobbied against the proposals before the Seattle City Council. But they haven't given up the fight just because they've become law.Some of the questions in Instacart's survey asked shoppers about how their earnings or wait times for orders had changed since the pay law took effect.One asked shoppers whether they supported or opposed Pay Up — but only after offering Instacart's own explanation in the previous questions about the law.That's caught some workers' attention."There were so many red flags in that survey that, of course, I didn't want to bother to do it," one Instacart shopper who delivers orders in Seattle told Business Insider. The shopper asked not to be identified for fear of having their Instacart account deactivated, but BI verified their employment and identity.The survey also asked shoppers whether they were waiting longer to claim orders to shop or earning more or less from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instacart-workers-call-out-customers-who-reduce-tips-by-marking-homes-tip-baiter-on-google-maps-2023-8">Instacart customer tips</a> — even though Instacart itself plays a commanding role in determining both, the shopper told BI.After Pay Up took effect, for instance, Instacart reduced the default tip on orders within Seattle to 0%. Before the law took effect, it was 5%. The summary touted that a super-majority of shoppers in Seattle said their experience on the app had gotten worse since Pay Up became law in January, with earnings down and wait times to claim orders up."A staggering 82% have said tips are down since PayUp took effect," the summary says, for example, without mentioning Instacart's change to its default tip in Seattle.A spokesperson for Instacart told Business Insider that "the voice of shoppers is critical in helping to shape public policy across the country, and we regularly reach out to shoppers to understand their experience on the platform. In one recent survey, 72% of shoppers surveyed in Seattle told us their experience has been worse since the PayUp law took effect."Elected officials, especially in Seattle, rely heavily on the voices of local constituents — including workers, businesses, and customers — to inform the direction of their policy proposals," they continued. "Instacart will continue to listen to shoppers and help empower them to make their voices heard in important policy conversations."About a month later, in March, Instacart sent out another email to shoppers. While it didn't reference the survey, it did claim that the company had heard from shoppers whose pay had gone down and who were waiting longer to claim batches of orders. "It's clear that this new law isn't working and unfortunately, this is exactly what we warned the Council would happen," the email read.The message included a link to a form with a pre-written letter, which pointed to many of the same issues that the survey had alluded to, including lower pay and wait times. It instructed shoppers to add their own experiences and then submit it to Instacart as a testimonial for the city council.Some shoppers posted the email on Reddit. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/InstacartShoppers/comments/1bpv4n5/hmm_must_be_the_citys_fault_right/">One poster</a>, who included screenshots of the message, encouraged other Instacart shoppers to turn the pre-written letter to the city council around. "Instead, tell them to crack down on Instacart's retaliation," the post read, referring to the costs that the company passed on to customers."I actually removed some of the text and I rephrased it to say, 'Thank you for passing Pay Up,'" the Instacart shopper who spoke with BI said.Other companies have made their gig workers aware of their stance on Seattle's new law, even if they haven't issued calls to action like Instacart's.About a week after Seattle's pay law took effect, DoorDash sent an email to its workers in Seattle with claims that Dashers would see fewer offers and wait longer to claim them. DoorDash also said in the message that it would end its Top Dasher and Priority Access programs in Seattle, both of which allow delivery workers access to better-paying batches if their metrics, such as customer ratings, are high enough."These new rules restrict platforms from rewarding high quality Dashers," the email read, referencing Pay Up."It's painfully clear from listening to Dashers, merchants and consumers that this new law simply isn't working," a DoorDash spokesperson told BI."The regulatory response fee in Seattle helps offset the costs associated with the current law," the spokesperson said. "If those costs can be decreased through reform legislation, we will explore all options to increase affordability for consumers, including a reduction of the fee."Uber Eats and <a target="_blank" href="https://about.grubhub.com/news/the-impact-of-payup-unpacking-seattles-damaging-new-delivery-law/">Grubhub</a> have also put out statements saying that things have gotten worse for their gig workers since Seattle's law took effect. The companies have also added fees for customers since Pay Up took effect. The FAA did impose restrictions on aerial drone flights for about two hours around the time of Trump's speech, though it is unclear whether jamming was in effect. But given a litany of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.spotlightpa.org/news/2024/08/trump-assassination-attempt-secret-service-flaws-failures/">security foul-ups</a> that day, such as failure to secure nearby rooftops, and lack of coordination between the Secret Service and local police, there is ample reason to doubt whether the rally was drone-proof.<div type="image" title="Secret Service agents converge on Trump on the stage of his Pennsylvania campaign rally, while a uniformed agent stands nearby holding a rifle." height="1329" width="2000" msid="112989488" hostid="261" sizebytes="193998"></div>Assassination by drone is hardly new, at least for militaries and spy agencies. The US, Britain, Israel and other nations have done it for more than two decades, using larger drones such as the $30 million MQ-Reaper, armed with laser-guided missiles filled with explosives or even <a target="_blank" href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/hellfire-missiles-al-qaeda-leader-al-zawahiri-minimal/story?id=87885003">sharp metal blades</a> that shred the target. But the danger now is that an insurgent or extremist can weaponize a $300 drone and strike a person within a half dozen miles with little warning.Despite the proliferation of small drones in private hands, including terrorist groups such as Islamic State, they have not really been employed for non-state-sanctioned attacks on public figures. But the omens are there, notably in 2018, when Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro survived an attack by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-45073385">explosive drones</a> while giving a speech in Caracas.Even in the best of times, there is a near-infinite variety of ways to harm a prominent public figure: snipers with telescopic sights, fanatics and lunatics with knives, car bombs, and humans who turn themselves into <a target="_blank" href="https://adst.org/2015/05/reap-the-whirlwind-the-assassination-of-rajiv-gandhi/">walking bombs.</a> Four US presidents were assassinated between 1865 and 1963 with old-fashioned rifles and pistols.In that sense, drones are just another iteration in an assassin's kit. They can be used to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-shooter-flew-drone-venue-hours-attempted-assassination-source-sa-rcna162817">surveil a target zone</a>, as happened at the Trump rally. They can carry explosives, as in the Venezuela attack, or even chemical or biological weapons, thus effectively becoming a stand-off strike weapon like a missile or mortar that has a larger kill zone. A small quadcopter can be purchased online for a few hundred dollars, and flown by someone with minimal training and experience.This doesn't mean that drones will necessarily become the tool of choice for aspiring assassins. Under some circumstances, such as the presence of jamming or bad weather, drone attacks may be difficult. One possibility is using aerial drones and ground robots to distract a dignitary's bodyguards, facilitating attack by conventional means."Often, the use of a drone in concert with another platform might be the optimum approach," Daniel Gerstein, a drone expert for the RAND Corp. think tank, told Business Insider.Defense against drones is hard even for troops on the battlefield, as shown in the Ukraine war, where Russia and Ukraine have lost large numbers of personnel and equipment despite the use of jammers and anti-aircraft guns and missiles. But knocking down drones during a crowded event, such as a politician's stump speech, is much more tricky."Even simple measures such as jamming GPS signals can be effective," Gerstein said. "Of course, one must worry about collateral damage if a drone is engaged and falls out of the sky. Diwali delights: 'Pippa', 'Ghoomer', 'Valatty' to sparkle on OTT

<ul class="summary-list"><li>My landlord tried to raise my rent by 15%, so I wrote an impassioned email.</li><li>A rent increase of that size is illegal for some buildings in NYC due to the new Good Cause Eviction law.</li></ul>It was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-city-rent-deals-landlords-holding-apartments-2021-3">lease renewal season</a> in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-rent-keeps-hitting-record-highs-despite-migration-from-city-2023-8">New York City</a>, and I was crying in Central Park.My landlord had just emailed me that my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-rent-keeps-hitting-record-highs-despite-migration-from-city-2023-8">rent was rising</a> by 15%. I had been bracing myself for an increase — my neighbors told me they had seen hikes of around 6% — but this proposal was untenable. Of course, my situation wasn't unique; plenty of New Yorkers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-living-nyc-millionaires-wealth-tax-2023-12">find themselves priced out</a> of their apartments every year. Some never return.I called my best friend to tell him the news. His response: "How can that be legal?"The answer, it turns out, is that it no longer was legal. After an impassioned email — and a week of waiting — my landlord reversed course. They said my building was covered under the new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thecity.nyc/2024/04/22/tenant-eviction-good-cause-rent-limits/">Good Cause Eviction law</a>, and my rent increase would instead be 8%.Of course, that is still a lot. But it is certainly cheaper than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/why-hiring-movers-always-good-idea-2022-7">moving</a> and was at least workable with my budget. As a New York City renter, I was shocked to learn that there was a law protecting me. New York City real estate is like the Wild West if it were incredibly overpriced, somehow even scarier, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-studio-apartment-listing-no-bathroom-instagram-2024-2">full of sad little closets</a>."In our current housing market, landlords have an immense amount of power over our lives," Cea Weaver, the campaign coordinator of <a target="_blank" href="https://housingjusticeforall.org/">Housing Justice for All</a> — a coalition that coordinated the campaign for Good Cause — told me.But Good Cause Eviction marks something that feels increasingly rare in today's rental landscape, where units are scarce and pricing feels like a free-for-all: Some protection for renters. While the law has its own caveats, its impact might be felt immediately for many New Yorkers — especially as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-rent-apartments-prices-soaring-competition-millennial-gen-z-2021-9">summer rental season looms</a>."We have been fighting for good cause because we think it's really critical that landlords should have a good reason to raise the rent — and a good reason to push you out of your home," Weaver said.<h2 id="2f386772-dfb2-410e-b67c-5d4bf01da188">What is Good Cause Eviction?</h2>According to Ellen Davidson, a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society who represents tenants, good cause eviction is meant to solve two key problems facing New York renters: large and unpredictable rent spikes and evictions.As Davidson told me, the law doesn't necessarily stop either of those practices but instead requires landlords to give reasons for them. In the case of an eviction, landlords need to have good cause — such as you haven't been paying rent, or their family member wants to move into the unit.Good Cause also has what's called the <a target="_blank" href="https://legalaidnyc.org/get-help/housing-problems/what-you-need-to-know-about-new-yorks-good-cause-eviction-law/">reasonable rent increase</a> measure: Buildings covered under Good Cause have limits on how much landlords can raise rent. A reasonable increase is now either 5% plus the rate of overall inflation, or 10% — whichever comes out to be lower. That's why my 15% increase was now off the table with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-cpi-food-energy-gas-prices-consumer-price-index-2024-5">CPI hovering around 3.4%</a>.<h2 id="323d2825-56cb-4334-9abe-804da018853a">How to know if your unit is protected under Good Cause</h2>Like many aspects of the New York City renting experience, Good Cause Eviction isn't completely straightforward. Not every building or unit is covered under the legislation."There's a little bit of a maze when it comes to figuring out if good cause applies to you," Allia Mohamed, co-founder and CEO of leasing and landlord review platform openigloo, told me.For instance, buildings built after 2009 are exempt, as are ones where the landlord owns fewer than 10 units. If your apartment is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-renter-landlord-overcharged-rent-stabilized-apartment-lawsuit-backpay-2024-2">rent-stabilized</a>, it's also not covered. Co-ops and condos aren't covered, and neither are some buildings where the landlord lives on the premises. Mohamed's platform, openigloo, has a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.openigloo.com/blogs/what-is-good-cause-eviction-what-does-it-mean-for-new-yorkers">good rundown</a> of the carve-outs — and the platform also has badges for buildings that are covered, if you want to search yours, like I did.With those carveouts, the new law might still not be enough to truly move the needle on broader rental costs."The final version cut out a lot of people, so it still remains to be seen on whether or not it will change market behavior, but it still will cover 500,000 households," Weaver said.Per Mohamed and openigloo's data analysis, a good chunk of buildings in ultra-pricey Manhattan are covered under the new law.But while the picture may look bleaker for more residential outer boroughs, Mohamed notes that the shares are skewed by more buildings being single-family homes. By extrapolating that 55% of units in those boroughs are likely covered — since that's the percentage of units across the city that are not regulated — Mohamed estimates that around 93% of units in the Bronx and 46% in Brooklyn are covered.While determining whether you're covered right now may seem like a bit of guesswork, that should be cleared up soon."There is a disclosure requirement that landlords need to give to their renters if good cause applies to them, but they have four months to catch up with the disclosure requirements," Mohamed said. "So there is a bit of this window right now in New York City where landlords are not obligated to tell tenants yet, but good cause has gone into effect already."For renters on the summer cycle, that's both good and bad news: The law applies to you, but, like me, you might have to seek it out. Landlords don't have to start those disclosures until August 20th.<h2 id="6a7dc838-f053-4d4a-911d-40ecb4bf7b9e">What to do if your rent is way too high</h2>If you receive a shocking rent increase, take some deep breaths — and also feel free to cry it out in Central Park. Then, go and check if your building is covered. If it is, a rental increase above 10% isn't necessarily illegal, but it requires more explanation.Under the new legislation, landlords can try to raise rent above that standard, but "they have to actually talk to their tenants and tell them why they're increasing the rent," according to Davidson. It could be that your landlord had to install a new roof or boiler or put other money into the building that could merit an increase.But if talking through the increase fails, renters can then do a few things. Of course, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/evictions-roaring-back-rents-rise-affordable-housing-stalls-2023-6">going to court</a> may be daunting — and a particular strain for New Yorkers who don't have the time or resources to prepare for a battle. Sometimes, a well-articulated email communicating that you know your rights can do the trick, Mohamed said."Usually all that it takes is just sending a quick email and saying, 'Hey, I'm a bit surprised by this 15% increase. I was under the impression that this building falls under the good cause eviction umbrella. Let me know the next steps before I flag this to the city or to my attorney or to whomever,'" she said. After all, many landlords may want to avoid the costs of a court battle.In my case, a long email resulted in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-to-negotiate-rent-apartment-2020-12">my rent increase going down</a>. But I also have the resources to know the economic landscape of the city and the country — I am, in fact, an economics reporter. English is also my first language, unlike other renters in the city, again giving me a leg up in pushing back. But for some, court may have to be the way to go."The way to challenge it is to either not sign the lease and then get taken to court for not signing your lease and then defend saying, 'this increase is too high,' or to pay the old amount and not the new amount, get taken to court for a nonpayment case and defend that the rent is too high," Davidson said.That might still mean a power balance weighted against renters — and one that requires further action."What people need to know is that you have these rights and the best way to enforce them is if you're collectively working with your neighbors," Weaver said.It's a power-in-numbers situation: When just one tenant like me goes against a landlord, they might be able to change their circumstance. But that's not a guarantee."They are going to have the money — that's your rent money — to hire every lawyer under the sun to try to fight you," Weaver said. I dodged a 15% rent increase because of a new NYC housing protection law. Here's how to know if it could save you money.

"Imake $180,000 a month off of properties I don't even own," Hailie Anderson, who's 21, brags matter-of-factly to her 30,000 followers on TikTok. It may sound too good to be true, but she's engaging in a trend that's come to be known as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/renting-airbnb-not-passive-wont-do-it-again-2024-7">Airbnb</a> arbitrage, where entrepreneurial lessees rent out their apartments or homes on short-term-rental sites, hiking up the nightly price to make a profit on top of what they owe their landlords. It's not uncommon. Most seem to do it quietly. Anderson, however, is part of a particularly brazen and typically young cohort of hosts who flaunt their side hustle online, critics — and in some cases the law — be damned.Arbitrage hosts like Anderson take to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hottest-tiktok-makeup-trend-right-now-moo-deng-blush-2024-9">TikTok</a>, YouTube, and Instagram to offer advice and promote paid courses on how to start and build your own short-term-rental empire. Anderson herself was inspired by other arbitrage influencers. She started two years ago, renting three apartments in the same building in Austin when she was 19, she says. Anderson spent several weeks furnishing and decorating the apartments (invariably sleek and minimalist, with gray and white couches and linens and abstract wall art), uploading well-lit photos, and managing the bookings. Today she has nearly 50 places listed on Airbnb in Salt Lake City, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/austin-home-prices-falling-texas-mortgage-rates-housing-crisis-success-2024-9">Austin</a>, and Nashville under her property-management business that she runs from Florida. Plus, she side-hustles with her part-coaching, part-influencer online business.From <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-elon-musk-starlink-hurricane-helene-fema-2024-9">Donald Trump</a> to Dave Ramsey, rich and successful (actual or seemingly) real-estate personalities have long offered tips and tricks for others to follow in their paths — and selling that advice can be wildly valuable. These Airbnb-arbitrage coaches, many of whom say they are or appear to be in their early 20s, are the Gen Z versions of '80s-era Trump, or social-media twists on HGTV shows, combining the ideas of a 5-to-9 side hustle, passive income, and TikTok clout. They document themselves shopping at Target for throw pillows, art, and kitchen essentials to stock in their apartments, answering emails, and touring new properties. A 25-year-old TikToker with the handle @airbbnbmastery101 titled one video "How to quit your job in 2024 and get rich." Another, Inayah McMillan, previously told Business Insider that she earned <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-host-how-i-set-up-scaled-properties-inayah-mcmillan-2022-12">more than $300,000</a> in 2022, at age 20, and her coaching site boasts more than 2,000 students. They claim to be a new type of real-estate mogul — tycoons who reign supreme without even holding a deed.Not everyone is thrilled about this. This style of short-term hosting bumps up against tighter restrictions as local governments push back on the proliferation of short-term rentals. Opponents say Airbnbs take long-term housing off the market and contribute to rising rents: A Zillow found earlier this year that rent growth had outpaced wages in 44 of America's largest 50 cities since 2019. New York last year enacted a licensing system that effectively booted whole-apartment rentals from Airbnb unless people were looking to book them for 30 days or longer. Cities around the world are scrambling to curtail Airbnb by making onerous restrictions or outright banning short-term rentals, as Barcelona has said it will do in 2028.But online, business for these hosts appears to be booming. Anderson's TikTok shows her travels through Europe and Asia and a day in the life running her business, which can include working from a cabana with a water slide. The job involves lots of reaching out to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-landlords-offer-rental-perks-concessions-free-rent-parking-nyc-2024-8">landlords</a> (sometimes hundreds in one city, Anderson says) and inquiring about running short-term rentals in their properties; managing a staff; sending in cleaners; and chatting with guests. She says she pays about $100,000 in rent to her many landlords each month but can pocket as much as $80,000 during busy travel seasons across bookings on Airbnb, Vrbo, and Booking.com and from those who come to her directly. But she's also filming videos and teaching courses, making TikToks, and traveling to conferences. Despite the profits, Anderson sees herself as immaterial to the real-estate quandary — and she says she rents properties that are legally approved for short-term renting, fully disclosing to landlords what she's doing. "I don't think me personally having 48 Airbnbs is single-handedly affecting the whole entire housing crisis," she tells me. Some of her commenters put the blame on her, but Anderson thinks there are plenty of leases to go around. The housing crisis "goes a lot deeper than that," she says. "There's a point where I try not to feel too guilty about it. But also, every single business negatively affects something in the world."Her Airbnb profiles have around 2,000 reviews that average out to about 4.9 out of 5 stars. Hundreds of people have signed up for her online courses, which cost as much as $2,000 and include videos and templates on topics like reaching out to landlords, furnishing Airbnbs, and understanding leases, along with weekly Q&amp;As with Anderson and access to a Discord community. She shows people how to write lease addendums that permit subletting and which software to use to manage properties and calculate prices. While angry mayors and residents point their finger at Airbnb for raising rents and bringing partiers to neighborhoods, she sees it as an opportunity for those to start their business with little to nothing. And flaunting the business on social media or at conferences has helped her find more guests who want to stay and led to new apartment leases. "I started this because I didn't have money to buy a house," she says. "If I can help 700 people not have to work their whole life at a 9-to-5, then why not?"There's no way to know for sure how popular Airbnb arbitrage is. Airbnb did not provide data on the number of hosts who engage in arbitrage, and it's nearly impossible to tell from listings on the site who owns a property versus who hosts it. Jamie Lane, the chief economist and senior vice president of analytics at AirDNA, which provides data on short-term rentals, says that the arbitrage trend has slowed overall since 2018 and that the drastic decrease in travel and short-term-rental demand brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic led some of the largest companies in arbitrage to flop. Arbitrage is essentially what larger short-term-rental companies like Sonder do, or what those like Domio and Stay Alfred did before shutting down in 2020. They're designed to come in and manage many short-term rentals for a building.But for smaller real-estate hopefuls, there's still a market. A big part of the appeal of arbitrage is that the startup costs are far lower than buying a property to use as a short-term rental, and some view it as an accessible entry into real estate. "It's still a great way to get into the short-term-rental industry," Lane says. As for those claiming to make millions: "Are there people making lots of money doing arbitrage? Absolutely," he says. "Is that the exception more than the rule? Probably."In some cases, hosts have skirted the law to engage in arbitrage. Some do it without signing leases with landlords that allow subletting. In July, Konrad Bicher, an Airbnb-arbitrage host, was sentenced to more than four years in prison for defrauding landlords. The self-proclaimed "Wolf of Airbnb" had signed lease agreements on New York apartments and sublet them without permission. Between 2019 and 2022, authorities say, Bicher failed to pay more than $1 million in rent but made more than $1 million renting those same units on Airbnb and another short-term-rental marketplace. To keep the apartments under his control, he relied on government protections meant to help renters through the pandemic.But Airbnb arbitrage, in theory, isn't illegal; it depends on local laws governing how short-term-rental properties are licensed. Still, rules could change at any time, leaving hosts on the hook for leases when they may no longer be legal to rent out short term. That's what happened to Tom DeRose, who operated an Airbnb-arbitrage company in New York with about a dozen apartments. When the regulations there changed in 2023, he pivoted. DeRose says that he regrets working in short-term-rental arbitrage and that "it's very clearly hurting" the housing market. Now he has a real-estate management company called HousingPanda, where he rents apartments in New York and then charges a premium for people to sublet them for either three or nine months. He says the leases are meant to appeal to students who live in the city for the school year or a summer internship.Airbnb has recently made moves to make its stays look unique or personalized. Last year it pushed stays in homes with guests, a feature it called Airbnb Rooms, which harked back to the platform's original idea of a formalized couch-surfing and room-renting site. Then this spring it unveiled Icons, a set of decked-out, specialized stays in places like Prince's "Purple Rain" house or a recreation of the "X-Men" mansion. But ultimately, whether the company endorses arbitrage publicly or not, it profits from it: More listings mean more money. Airbnb did not provide comments on the popularity of the trend, or the coaching courses and online content, for this story. The company does have a guide to help hosts communicate with building managers about using properties as rentals.I reached out to a handful of Airbnb-arbitrage hosts on TikTok who did not respond to interview requests. It's often difficult to tell from their videos what takes precedence: the hosting or the coaching. For Anderson, it's all a stepping stone of the way to her ultimate goal: owning property, which she calls "the real flex." (She would maybe one day even let someone run an Airbnb out of it, if she got tired of being in charge.) She says that she thinks about opening a boutique hotel one day but that it wouldn't be possible at such a young age without her foray into Airbnb. Still, "it's not get-rich-quick, easy money," Anderson tells me.
