OTP delays should end as TRAI suspends its blockchain experiment for seven days

New Delhi, Dec 27 () From January, SBI customers will be able to make ATM withdrawal above Rs 10,000 only after an OTP verification during 8 PM to 8 AM.
 The OTP-validated ATM transaction has been introduced to minimise the number of unauthorised transactions, State Bank of India (SBI) said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
"With the introduction of its OTP-based cash withdrawal facility, State Bank ATMs have added another layer of security for cash withdrawals. OTP will be received on the customer's mobile number registered with the bank," SBI said. 
This additional factor of authentication will protect State Bank card holders from unauthorized ATM cash withdrawals, it said further.
SBI said that the new feature will not require any major change in the present process to withdraw cash from its ATMs (automated teller machines). 
However, this facility will not be applicable for transactions, where a State Bank card holder withdraws cash from another bank's ATM, because this functionality has not been developed in National Financial Switch (NFS), it added. 
 In this process, once the cardholder enters the amount they wish to withdraw, the ATM screen displays the OTP window. The customer has to enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number to complete the transaction.
 NFS is the largest interoperable ATM network in the country and it manages more than 95 per cent of the domestic interbank ATM transactions. 
 "This will safeguard the customers against the risk of unauthorized transactions on account of skimmed/cloned cards, while withdrawing cash at State Bank ATMs," the bank said. KPM RUJ

SBI to introduce OTP-based ATM transactions from January

New Delhi [India], August 1 (ANI): The <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) has released a draft framework on alternative <keyword id="20470059" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="authentication" source="keywords">authentication</keyword> mechanisms to supplement the SMS-based OTP system for digital <keyword id="22624644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="payment-transactions" source="keywords">payment transactions</keyword>. The RBI noted, "No specific factor was mandated for authentication, but the <keyword id="19989657" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="keywords">digital payments</keyword> ecosystem has primarily adopted SMS-based OTP as <keyword id="22624645" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="additional-factor-of-authentication" source="keywords">Additional Factor of Authentication</keyword> (AFA). While OTP is working satisfactorily, technological advancements have made available alternative authentication mechanisms." The draft discusses the Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA), which involves using more than one factor to authenticate a payment instruction. It requires that the process validate and confirm the credentials of the customer initiating the payment. Furthermore, the draft specifies that issuers must obtain explicit consent from customers before enabling any new authentication factor. Customers should also have the option to deregister from using the new authentication method. The draft states, "All digital payment transactions, other than card present transactions, shall ensure that one of the factors of authentication is dynamically created, i.e., the factor is generated after initiation of payment, is specific to the transaction and cannot be reused." Additionally, the draft mandates that issuers must have a system to alert customers in near real-time for all eligible digital payment transactions. It also prohibits transaction issuers from entering into exclusive arrangements with any Payment Service Provider or Technology Service Provider, which could limit their ability to implement alternative authentication solutions. RBI has proposed <keyword id="22624646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-mandates" source="keywords">e-mandates</keyword> for <keyword id="21970493" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="recurring-transactions" source="keywords">recurring transactions</keyword> in mutual funds, insurance premiums, credit card bill payments for values up to Rs 1 lakh and in respect of all other categories for value up to Rs 15,000. The banking regulator also suggests that issuer shall be liable for the process and technology deployed for authenticating digital payments. There should also be a system of alerting the customer in near real time for all digital payment transactions. The draft notes that small value card present transactions up to Rs 5000 per transaction in contactless mode at Point of Sale (PoS) terminals are exempt from the AFA requirement. The central bank has invited comments and feedback on the draft framework until September 15, 2024. The proposed alternative authentication mechanisms aim to provide more choices for authentication factors to Payment System Operators and users.

So, what do you do when the one sure-shot method of protecting your <keyword id="694150" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-payments">online payments</keyword> might get compromised? ”The way you hold your phone, the pressure that you exert when you’re typing on the keyboard and other things — these are multiple hidden factors that will give you the same result as an OTP,” said Guru Bhat, vice-president of the Customer Success Platform and general manager at <keyword id="6357940" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paypal">PayPal</keyword> India. Most smartphones today come equipped with a host of sensors. The screen Gyroscopes can measure the orientation of your phone. Accelerometers can determine how hard you’re hitting your keyboard. And, advanced haptics can even determine how hard you’re holding your phone. These factors come together to determine a person’s digital signature through what is called ‘kinetics’. “You take the fact that an individual is associated with a device and the individuals’ use of a device itself has a signature. And, you use that signature as a part of the claim that the individual is who they claim to be,” explained Bhat. Where do you draw the line? While multi-factor authentication could facilitate seamless transitions, companies will also have to determine where to draw the line since microphones and facial recognition are also factors than need to be taken into account. While they may be more efficient than other methods to authenticate a person’s identity, they end up falling on the other end of the privacy spectrum. “It’s going be a mix of human intelligence and machine intelligence, where the magic actually lies,” said Bhat. It’s not something that is used by payments platforms just yet, but it’s definitely something that’s on the horizon. “Soon enough, we’ll get to a place where seamless transactions and convenience will all be based on implicit multi-factors, from various different things,” said Sri Shivananda, senior vice president and chief technology officer at PayPal. The obstacles with OTPs go beyond security Until multi-factor authentication comes in, OTPs are still the best option that users have at their disposal. “There are other methods of secure communication that can happen. But, during the bridge, this is the best course that companies are able to take,” Shivananda explained. However, OTPs are not only a worry with respect to security as the hackers get cleverer but also with respect to transaction drop rate. “Does two-factor authentication improve the security and safety of a transaction — absolutely, yes. And, at the same time, does it add friction to it and does the conversion rate for a merchant actually drop — absolutely, yes,” he added. From the time that you initiate a transaction to when you complete it using an OTP there are many things that can go wrong. Network connectivity could fall through, you might enter the incorrect six-digit code, somebody might call you away in the middle of the lengthy process causing the transaction to time or you might simply, just lose interest. For now, payment companies like are using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to track where potential attacks could emanate from. “Through what we call defence-in-depth and layered security, we apply protection on your device from within the app — on the network edge, rate-limiting infrastructure, the right kind of cryptographic infrastructure, and so on,” explained Shivananda. Elyments OTP verification fails⁠ disappointing new users wanting to get on board a day after its high-decibel launch

Mumbai, The <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> on Thursday said that it has decided to come out with a new <keyword id="20027459" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="framework" source="keywords">framework</keyword> for authentication of digital payment transactions and introduce additional norms to enhance the security of the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (<keyword id="19946538" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aeps" source="keywords">AePS</keyword>). Over the years, the <keyword id="19922074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="keywords">Reserve Bank</keyword> has prioritised security of digital payments, in particular the requirement of Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA). Although the RBI has not prescribed any particular AFA, the payments ecosystem has largely adopted SMS-based One Time Password (<keyword id="19957209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="otp" source="keywords">OTP</keyword>). With innovations in technology, alternative authentication mechanisms have emerged in recent years. "To facilitate the use of such mechanisms for digital security, it is proposed to adopt a principle-based 'Framework for authentication of digital payment transactions'. Instructions in this regard will be issued separately," the RBI said. To enhance the security of AePS transactions, it is proposed to streamline the onboarding process, including mandatory due diligence, for AePS touchpoint operators, to be followed by banks. Additional fraud risk management requirements will also be considered. Instructions in this regard shall be issued shortly, the RBI said. Aadhaar Enabled Payment System, operated by NPCI, enables customers to perform digital payment transactions in assisted mode. In 2023, more than 37 crore users undertook AePS transactions, which points to the important role played by AePS in financial inclusion.

India's domestic air passenger traffic rose 9% to more than 1.27 crore in November, according to official data released on Friday. Official data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday showed that airlines flew 1.27 crore passengers in November compared to 1.17 crore in the year-ago period. This marks a growth of 9.06% on an annual basis. "Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-November 2023 were 1,382.34 lakhs as against 1,105.10 lakhs during the corresponding period of previous year thereby registering annual growth of 25.09% and monthly growth of 9.06%," DGCA said. The domestic market share of <keyword id="6358032" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spicejet" source="Orion">SpiceJet</keyword> rose to 6.2% in November from 5% in October. Its OTP stood at 41.8% last month. <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>'s domestic market share remained unchanged at 10.5% in November while that of Vistara fell marginally to 9.4% last month. Air India's OTP was at 62.5% while that of AIX Connect and Alliance Air were at 69.7% and 66.1%, respectively. New Delhi, Jan 21 () GST Network (GSTN) on Tuesday said 13.30 lakh GSTR-3B returns, about one-fifth of total such returns, were filed on the last day on January 20 despite some technical glitches.
 This month's return filing data till date show that the GSTN return filing system was working within its expected limits which is evident by the fact that till January 14, a total of 24.66 lakh GSTR-3B were filed, GST Network said in a statement.
 "A total of 65.65 lakh GSTR-3B for the tax month of December were filed, out of which 13.30 lakh GSTR-3B returns were filed on last day itself, i.e., on January 20, 2020," it said.
 Several taxpayers complained of technical glitches on filing returns on social media.
 There have been few issues about one-time passwords (OTPs) being received with some time lag on account of delay by the e-mail service provider or local internet issues, it said.
 "Thus, in order to ensure that no inconvenience is faced by the taxpayer on this account, the OTPs are sent simultaneously on e-mail as well as on registered mobile number so that in case there is a delay in receiving OTP on e-mail, OTP received on mobile phone or vice versa can be used. The taxpayer can use OTP received on any channel for filing their returns," it said.
 In the last three days 8.32 lakh, 6.09 lakh and 13.30 lakh GSTR-3B returns were filed on January 18, 19 and January 20, respectively.
 On January 21 also, till 12 pm, more than 2 lakh GSTR-3B were filed for the tax month of December, totalling the GSTR-3B returns filed to 67.70 lakh in this month, it added. DP CS HRS

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Walmart-owned Flipkart on Monday announced the launch of Visa Safe Click (VSC) - powered by Visa - that will eliminate the need for one time passwords (OTP) for transactions up to Rs 2,000.
VSC will enable the e-commerce platform to deploy India's first in-app device-based network authentication solution, a statement said.
"This solution will eliminate the need for OTP for transactions up to Rs 2,000, while also ensuring a completely secure payment experience," it added.
Flipkart said by enabling consumers to enjoy a hassle-free and safe payment process for transactions up to Rs 2,000, it hopes to reduce the steps in the payment system.
This will also help consumers complete their purchase journey with ease, primarily in regions where internet connectivity and e-literacy are scarce, it added.
"OTP-based authentication is one of the biggest points of friction in online card transactions, wherein we have observed significant customer drop-offs...VSC is the outcome of one such effort and completely replaces OTP with a background authentication, removing the need for any additional customer action," Flipkart Head - Fintech and Payments Group Ranjith Boyanapalli said.
Through this initiative, Flipkart is expecting that more consumers can make small-ticket purchases more easily and complete their purchase journey in a click, he added. SR SR BAL

However, that’s about all the good news that there is. In order to get your OTP, you need to go to the main CoWIN portal, click on the registration button, enter your phone number. <ul><li><keyword id="11094" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hackers" source="Orion">Hackers</keyword> target users on platforms such as Amazon or PayPal by stealing the temporary passwords users receive on their phones.</li><li>They use customisable bots to ask users of 2FA or OTP codes to log in to their accounts.</li><li>Unsuspecting users get voice calls from such bots, asking them to enter verification codes, which can then be accessed by the hackers.</li></ul> Users are generally advised to use two-factor authentication (2FA) and one-time passwords (OTP) wherever possible to enhance the security of their respective accounts. But according to a report in <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/y3vz5k/booming-underground-market-bots-2fa-otp-paypal-amazon-bank-apple-venmo">The Vice</a>, hackers have deduced a way to steal these sensitive codes by using <keyword id="7142538" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="voice-bots" source="Orion">voice bots</keyword> to trick the users. The hackers can either login or make money transfers or perform other sensitive functions by using the 2FA or OTP verification codes that the users are tricked into revealing. Once you enter it, the verification code reaches the hacker and they can now login to your account and perform sensitive transactions. The Vice in their report demonstrated one such instance where the user gets a call from PayPal’s fraud prevention system. According to the call, someone wanted to spend $58.82 by accessing the user’s PayPal account. Over the call, it said, “in order to <keyword id="12487304" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="secure-your-account" source="Orion">secure your account</keyword>, please enter the code we have sent your mobile device now.” Once the code was entered, it said “Thank you, your account has been secured and this request has been blocked.” Apart from these, the voice call also informed the users saying “Don’t worry if any payment has been charged to your account: we will refund it within 24 to 48 hours. Your reference ID is 1549926. You may now hang up.” The call was actually from a hacker who used the customisable bot to trick the user into giving their one-time codes for verification. Similarly, hackers can target your Apple Pay, PayPal, Amazon, Coinbase, and other accounts to steal money or cryptocurrencies. To hack into an account, one will need a username or email address or phone and password. This can be obtained from a previous data breach, and if the user has 2FA or OTP enabled, the hackers bring in voice bots to their use.
