10 Secret Features Hidden Inside Mac Software

<p>We've discovered a new trick that makes the <keyword id="62949" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="MaC">Mac</keyword> OS X Reminders app more useful.</p>
<p><span>Instead of having to go through the app and add an actual date a time you can just type your reminder and a specific time and the app will set everything up automatically.</span></p>
<p>For example, if you enter take the trash out tomorrow at noon, <span>app will automatically set the reminder for that date and remove it from the name.</span></p>
<p><span>Annoyingly, this doesn't apply to the iPhone reminders app.<br /></span></p>

This Trick Makes Using The Reminders App On Your Mac Much Easier

<p>During today's keynote, <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> announced that users of <keyword id="597137" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mac-OS-X">Mac OS X</keyword> will be able to upgrade to OS X 10.9 <keyword id="218065" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mavericks">Mavericks</keyword> for free today via the <keyword id="62949" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="MaC">Mac</keyword> App Store. This is the newest version of Apple's operating system for Mac computers.</p>
<p>Users of Snow Leopard (10.6), Lion (10.7), and Mountain Lion (10.8) can get Mavericks for free, regardless of whether you paid to upgrade before or if you're still using the software that came with your computer.</p>
<p>We've put together a quick guide to installing Mavericks that works for anyone with an iTunes account (it's required to use the Mac App Store). <span>If you're on a notebook, make sure your computer is plugged in before you begin this process.</span></p>

<p>The installation will begin. A small progress bar for the download will appear beneath the Launchpad icon in your Dock:</p>

For the iCloud mail account to work on your Mac, you need to have OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) or newer, so a first step might be to update your Mac OS if it's outdated. </p><p>When you log in to your Apple device, it should either ask you to sign in to your iCloud account. Otherwise, you'll already be signed in. That means if your iCloud email is already set up, new messages will automatically download, with the red notification bubble above the Mail app icon in your Dock or app screen. </p><p>If you don't want to use the app, you can also access your iCloud email inbox online through the email client's website. To access your email this way, you will need to ensure you have a <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204230">supported browser</a>. How to check which version of macOS your Mac computer is running in 3 simple steps

Here's what your Mac can expect with the forthcoming update:</span></p><ul><li><span style="font-weight: 400;">OS X is dead. Long live macOS. </span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/os-x-may-become-macos-2016-4"><span style="font-weight: 400;">As expected</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, Apple has officially dropped the platform's "OS X" nomenclature, and will instead refer to the software as "macOS" going forward.<br /><br /></span>At least from a branding standpoint, this brings the OS more in line with other Apple ventures like iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. <br /><br />This marks the second time the company has changed the name of the software in recent years, as OS X was previously referred to as "Mac OS X" up until 2012's OS X v10.8 "Mountain Lion" update.</li><li>This year's update as a whole is named "Sierra."</li><li>The lockscreen is getting an adjustment, with an "Auto Unlock" feature that, as the name suggests, can automatically unlock a MacBook as you open it.</li><li>New storage optimization features aim to help reduce the amount of space you have being chewed up by onboard apps.</li><li>A new "Picture in Picture" mode does as the name suggests, moving a video into a smaller window that can be moved over other apps, even when in fullscreen mode.</li><li>A "Universal Clipboard" feature allows you to copy files from iOS devices and paste them onto Macs.</li><li>Apple Pay support is available on Macs through the web. <p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Earlier this month, Apple announced its newest operating system for Macs, OS X El Capitan.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1">Piggybacking off of the operating system before it - OS X Yosemite - El Capitan claims to be faster and come with some nifty new features for desktop Mac users.</p><p class="p1">But one question remains: Why in the world did Apple decide to call it El Capitan? </p><p class="p1">The history of OS X naming goes all the way back to 2001. The first official version of OS X was dubbed "Cheetah." Then, until 2012, each following operating system was named after another fast and agile cat. The last feline-named version of Apple's Mac operating system was Mountain Lion.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1">Then in 2013, Apple made a change. OS X 10.9, instead of representing yet another cat-like species, was instead dubbed Mavericks. At its unveiling, Craig Federighi told the audience the operating systems to come would be named after well-known California locations. Of course, Mavericks is a favorite surfing spot in Northern California.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Federighi <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/10/os-x-mavericks/">joked</a>, "<span>We don't want to be the first development team to be delayed by the lack of big cats."</span></span></p><p class="p1">Following Mavericks was OS X Yosemite, which was named after Yosemite National Park.</p><p class="p1">And now we have El Capitan, which (despite sounding a bit like a Mexican restaurant) is actually a vertical rock formation located within Yosemite National Park. </p><p class="p1">Apple didn't provide a formal reason for why it chose El Capitan, but the rock formation is considered an important California landmark. <p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shellshock-computer-virus-threat-apple-2014-9">Shellshock</a> is a bug discovered last week that, when exploited, can allow a remote user to control one or more computers in a system. </p>
<p>Once the computers are under remote control, they can be used for malicious purpose, like attacking websites with distributed denial of service (DD0S) attacks.</p>
<p>Apple has released <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1769?viewlocale=en_US&amp;locale=en_US">a patch for OS X Mavericks</a> users, as well as update for <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1767">Lion</a> and <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1768">Mountain Lion</a> users. </p>
<p>Apple claims only a limited number of users are vulnerable to the bug, but this is an update you should get now to rid yourself of any worrying.</p>

Apple Just Protected Your Mac From A Terrifying Vulnerability

<p>Apple is storing Mac users' unsaved files on iCloud, <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/11/03/filevault_2_mac_users_unsaved_files_and_screenshots_are_automatically_uploaded.html">according to Slate's Yael Grauer</a>.</p>
<p>Security expert Jeffrey Paul also <a href="https://datavibe.net/~sneak/20141023/wtf-icloud/">noticed the feature</a>. </p>
<p>Apple told Business Insider that this speaks to its efforts to be transparent with users. OS X Yosemite allows users to see what's on their iCloud in Finder.</p>
<p>Paul claims that iCloud Drive started automatically uploading unsaved files with the introduction of OS X Yosemite. Apple clarified to Business Insider, however, that the autosave feature began two operating systems ago with OS X Mountain Lion.</p>
<p>Apple also confirmed that the autosave feature not only works on Mac apps like Pages, TextEdit, and Preview, but also on some third-party apps like <a href="http://www.iawriter.com/mac/">iA Writer</a>.</p>
<p>Grauer points out, however, that users aren't aware of this feature, which might pose a problem. Apple says the details of how iCloud saves files are made clear in the product's Terms of Service agreement, though such agreements aren't always read carefully.</p>
<p>Luckily, there are two simple solutions for people worried about their unsaved files: They can either save their files locally before exiting an application, or they can manage exactly what syncs to their iCloud by going to System Preferences &gt; iCloud &gt; Documents &amp; Data. </p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>A Swedish white-hat hacker has discovered a serious vulnerability in OS X Yosemite that may extend to previous Mac operating systems as well, <a href="http://thehackernews.com/2014/11/rootpipe-critical-mac-os-x-yosemite.html">reports The Hacker News' Mohit Kumar</a>.</p>
<p>The vulnerability, called "Rootpipe," appears to have been discovered by <a href="https://twitter.com/emilkvarnhammar" class="ProfileHeaderCard-nameLink u-textInheritColor js-nav">Emil Kvarnhammar</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, a consultant at IT security firm <a href="http://www.truesec.se/">TrueSec</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Rootpipe allows outside users to gain administrator-level access to Macs running OS X Yosemite, Mavericks, or Mountain Lion without a password. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>The security flaw gives attackers the opportunity to steal information, install malicious programs, or erase users' hard drives.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Kvarnhammar, for his part, appears to be waiting for Apple to patch Rootpipe before saying much about it:</span></p>

A White-hat Hacker Discovered A Dangerous Vulnerability In Three Apple Operating Systems

It's unclear why Apple chose Australia to debut the new slang-based name, especially when other countries - such as the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> - also use colloquial terms to describe "trash." </p><p>Apple is not beyond adding small, but thoughtful, details that many users won't perceive. Apple's latest software update brings local slang to your iPhone

<p><div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source on-image">"Top Gun"</p></div></div><keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> will release Mavericks, a new version of its OS X operating system for Macs, at the end of October, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2013/09/06/apples-os-x-mavericks-release-planned-for-end-of-october/">reports 9to5Mac</a>.</p>
<p>For context's sake, we've also heard rumors that the new Mavericks will launch alongside iOS 7, which we know is due out later this month.</p>
<p>9to5<keyword id="62949" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="MaC">Mac</keyword> hypothesizes the company's iMacs, MacBook Pros, and Mac Pros could launch around the same time as Mavericks too. </p>
<p>Apple first announced Mavericks at its WWDC developers conference in June. But it seems like Apple is diverting resources to get iOS 7 out the door in time for its new iPhone launch later this month.</p>
<p>As a refresher, Mavericks offers several improvements over the Mountain Lion, the current Mac OS.</p>
<p>Improvements include multiple tabs in the Finder window, the ability to tag files with keywords for the sake of search, and many more <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mac-os-x-mavericks-2013-6">you can read about here</a>.</p>

Apple's Next Mac Operating System Likely Won't Launch Until October Along With Some New Computers

<p>Since 2001, every edition of OS X has been named after big cats, starting with the code-names Cheetah and Puma, and followed by Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion and finally Mountain Lion in 2012. Eventually Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice-president of software engineering, joked about naming its next operating software release "Sea Lion", and the era of the big cats was over.</p>
<p>Apple toyed with 10.9 Cabernet and 10.10 Syrah, but apparently couldn't stomach a wine-related meme and announced in June that the next releases will be named after Californian locations.</p>
<p>No doubt Apple's marketing department (and the California tourist board) are brewing Bay Bridge, Lake Taho, Sacramento, Humboldt, Yosemite and others. But where and what exactly is Mavericks?</p>
<p>It's easy to imagine what went through the mind of the marketing team; the endless summers of the California surf aesthetic, and those timeless, artful shots of breaking waves and barrels. But the romance stops there.</p>
<p>Mavericks is regarded as one of North America's most dangerous surf breaks. In 1994, it became one of the few locations to kill a professional surfer when Hawaiian big wave rider Mark Foo wiped out. In 2011, Mavericks claimed another life when Sion Minsky drowned.</p>
<p>Just the month before, Minsky had won the North Shore underground surfer of the year, <a href="http://www.surfingmagazine.com/news/north-shore-underground-the-winner-speaks/">leading Surfing Magazine to write</a> "we'll be watching Si to see where this momentum takes him". He used some of his $25,000 prize money to pay for the trip to Mavericks.</p>
<p>Even among <keyword id="28620" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="surfing">surfing</keyword>'s select group of big-wave riders - maybe 100 in the world - only a handful will take on the winter swells at Mavericks, where waves can reach 80 feet. Those that do need specialist equipment - helmets, sometimes lifejackets, jetski tow-ins and emergency backup. None of which makes for a comfortable marketing metaphor with a mainstream piece of computer software.</p>
<p>As for how the surf break got its name, it owes more to dogs than cats.</p>
<p>For years, most thought Mavericks too dangerous to be surfed and just one man, Jeff Clark, rode it alone, for 15 years. The name though, predates him.</p>
<p>In 1961, three surfers arrived in Half Moon Bay to try it out, accompanied by a German shepherd called Maverick. While the men had a mediocre day, steering clear of the big waves which would make the spot famous, Maverick had a great time, swimming out to join in until he had to be tied up on shore for his own safety. Since he was the only one of the four who seemed to have had fun, they decided to name the place after him, and so "Maverick's" was born.</p>
<p>If the California thing doesn't work for Apple, it can always switch tack and say that animals were the plan all along - the names have just switched from cats to dogs. Could Mac OS X Lassie be next?</p>

Apple's Newest Operating System Named After Legendary California Surf Spot

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">Google has 2,000 employees housed throughout its quirky London offices.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Google is gearing up for a bevy of big announcements next week. The tech giant is expected to launch two new flagship smartphones, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-nexus-5x-and-6p-box-leaks-2015-9">the Nexus 5x and Nexus 6p</a> - and likely alongside them, Android Marshmallow, the latest update to its mobile operating system (OS).</p><p>The company is Californian; the lion's share of its 57,000-strong workforce is based in America. Its London operation, with just 2,000 employees, is a relative minnow.</p><p>But in collaboration with Google's teams in the States, London contributes a surprising amount to Android. If you've ever used the Chrome browser on your phone - thank London. If you've watched a video on Google Play - that's London. Made use of Android's enterprise functionality? London. Used text-to-speech? London. If you've ever even <em>Googled</em> something on your Android smartphone - that, in large part, is London.</p><h2 class="p1">Google's London Android team pre-dates Android</h2><p>There are currently around 300 engineers working on Android in London. This mobile team's presence dates back nearly a decade, before even the commercial release of Android. In the pre-iPhone era, when operating systems like Symbian were cutting edge, a team in London was helping build Google's apps like Google Maps and Search for the platform.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">One of the more informal rooms in the office.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"Then the world changed, of course," Andrei Popescu, head of Android engineering in London, tells us. "[With] the introduction of the iPhone and Android we shifted focus here in London, and we built an Android engineering team." Since then, it has grown significantly - from the 100 engineers in the city when Popescu joined in 2007, to the 700-odd Google has today.</p><p>From early on, <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> developers have helped tackle mobile web browsing. In early versions of Android, before a mobile version of Chrome was available, there was a separate "Browser" application. The UK helped build this. The UK was a key part of the push to launch Chrome for mobile - and after it was introduced, in 2012, London helped develop it too, and continues to today. "Every time you use Chrome on your device, please think of us too!" Popescu says.</p><h2 class="p1">The US and the UK work hand-in-glove</h2><p>Of course, this work isn't done solo by any means. There's a close level of collaboration on almost all projects between the US and the UK office. Take the search bar tool on Android devices. The app is built in London, but the British engineers have worked closely with the entire global Google Search team, as the results are served by the same engine.</p><p>Or look at the Play Movies app. Again, the app and video rendering engine itself was built by engineers in London. But again, a back-end team in the US is responsible for the system that serves the content to the app.</p><p>How much freedom does the London team get? Senior leadership Mountain View ultimately signs off on projects and ideas, Popescu told me. "Of course, we are given the freedom to experiment, the freedom to propose ideas." He cites a fun feature introduced this year on Android Wear, Google's operating system for smartphones. Users can do a quick doodle on the screen, and the software will try to identify what emoji they are drawing <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/05/28/draw-emoji/">and "auto-complete" it for them</a>. This is then sent to user with Android Wear whose device has been paired with the sender.</p><p>The idea was dreamt up in London, pitched to Mountain View, signed off, and subsequently built back in London.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">Visitors to Google's offices are invited to guess who the bathtub belongs to.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Android Wear, like Chrome on mobile, is another area where London makes significant contributions - the engineering director for Android Wear works out of one of the London offices.</p><p>On that note, I ask, how does Popescu feel about sales of Google wearables to date? Apple has yet to break out sales figures for the Apple Watch, its debut smartwatch, but research firms believe it is significantly outselling Android Wear devices. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/android-wear-apple-watch-google-advantage-developers-2015-4">According to one estimate</a>, it managed to sell more units in a single day than Google did in an entire year.</p><p>"These are early days for wearable technology, Popescu says. "We're doing our best to make the best possible wearable platform and I think it's very early in the process to talk about numbers." (It's also worth noting that in the early days, iOS used to dramatically outsell Android too. In 2009, the first full year commercial Android devices were on sale, <a href="http://digithoughts.com/post/21428797724/android-and-apple-smartphone-sales-2007-2012-by">iPhone sales beat them around 3:1</a> - but Android has since ballooned into the undisputed dominant global mobile operating system.)</p><p>While most projects involve working closely with the US, there are some exceptions to this rule. Milena Nikolic, who heads up the Google Play Developer Experience team in London, tells me she has worked with her team on two features that were built entirely within London.</p><p>The first is "Store Listing Experiments," a kind of A/B testing for developers looking to add their apps to Google Play, Google's app store. App builders can now test multiple images, descriptions, icons, and other variables with customers to see what resonates, and use the data to optimise their marketing. The other is beta-testing - letting developers release their app to a limited pool of users via Google Play, before it's ready for a broader public release.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">Milena Nikolic and Andrei Popescu work on Android in London.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2 class="p1">Google's European outpost</h2><p>London's 300 Android engineers comprise Google's largest team working on the mobile operating system outside of the United States. (Another significant overseas office is in Tokyo.) The search giant has commissioned <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-asks-thomas-heatherwick-to-design-its-new-1-billion-london-hq-2015-6">British designer Thomas Heatherwick to build its new £1 billion London HQ</a> after then-CEO Larry Page reportedly dismissed a previous proposal (that included a climbing wall and running track) as "boring." But for now, they remain nestled in an office a stone's throw from Victoria train station.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">Yes. That's a bus.</p></div><p></p></div></div>It doesn't have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/googles-office-slides-2012-5?op=1">the infamous slide</a>, but it's otherwise classic Google: Douglas Adams' bathtub sits in the lobby. The lower half of a double-decker bus doubles up as a meeting space in a corridor. Employees can kick back in dedicated gaming and music rooms. Areas are named after famous computer scientists.</p><p>London has a "natural history of mobile development," Popescu says. Previous investment from Symbian, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson has produced "a tradition of people who are good at mobile operating systems, programs for mobile devices. [With] four of the world's best universities, the level of education in this city is outstanding. Finally, London is a true international city that attracts the most brilliant people from all over the world."</p><p>Are there any differences in culture between Google's offices in the States and in Britain? Nikolic, who visits the US several times a year for work, has one example: The UK has a stronger after-work socialising culture. "In California, the different thing is everyone is kind of driving to work, so that just changes the dynamic a little bit." Employees tend to "sit in their car and drive off somewhere in Silicon Valley" after work.</p><p>In London, Googlers are more inclined to retire with their co-workers to a pub.</p><h2 class="p1">Preparing for launch</h2><p>"It's always exciting, it's a very buzzing period," says Popescu of the imminent launch of Android Marshmallow. "In general with Marshmallow we've taken the approach that we want the whole release extremely polished - not that we didn't have polished releases before."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">One of the games rooms in Google's Victoria office.</p></div><p></p></div></div>What should we expect? Performance improvements. "Slickness." Better battery life. The optimising compiler "at the very heart of Android" has been built upon in the UK. "[It's] not a visible feature in the sense that the end user might notice, but overall that results in better performance. So if your experience is better running Marshmallow, then that's something we will have done here."</p><p>Although Marshmallow will likely launch in the coming weeks, you shouldn't expect to see it on your smartphone right away. Handset manufacturers, not Google, are responsible for pushing the update out to their users - meaning it's likely to see a slow and staggered launch over the months ahead. Lollipop, Android's previous update, was finalised in November 2014, but <a href="https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html">official figures</a> show just 21% of Android smartphones are running it.</p><p>(In contrast, <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2015/09/21iPhone-6s-iPhone-6s-Plus-Arrive-on-Friday-September-25.html">Apple claims that</a> 50% of iOS devices upgraded to iOS 9, its most recent OS, within a week of its launch.)</p><p>Is this fragmentation frustrating? "I think it's different," Popescu reasons. The company does offer tools to maximise compatibility for apps, and keeps core API's up-to-date for everyone. "We have something like 400 OEM partners ... 4,000 different types of device ... the last number of active users is about 1 billion. I think this model has served us pretty well."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">Google's perks: Pretty great.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2 class="p2">Storm clouds brewing</h2><p>Along with Marshmallow and a new batch of smartphones, there's a more ominous event on the horizon for Google in Europe: Regulatory scrutiny.</p><p>The search giant is currently facing an antitrust investigation by the European Commission over allegations that it has abused its dominant position in search and on Android to promote its own products over those of its competitors. On Friday, two days after I met with Popescu and Nikolic, Bloomberg reported that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-antitrust-us-android-report-2015-9">the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the US was in the early stage of looking into Android over antitrust claims</a>.</p><p>Google strongly disputes the European allegations. (A spokesperson declined to comment to Business Insider about the Bloomberg report.) <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-released-a-report-detailing-how-it-helps-businesses-in-europe-2015-9">It recently held an event in London</a> in which it set out how its services act as a "Growth Engine for the UK's Economy."</p><p>"We're engineers, so I think first of all the thing that's at the top of our minds is the features we're working on and the next version of our operating system we're working on," Popescu tells me. "We're working on an open source operating system that we're making freely available to everyone ...
