Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales declined by about 2 per cent year-on-year in August as companies curtailed dispatches to reduce inventory at dealers amid a drop in demand. According to data issued by the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (<keyword id="20185536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIAM" source="keywords">SIAM</keyword>), the total passenger vehicle dispatches in the domestic market stood at 3,52,921 units last month compared to 3,59,228 vehicles in August 2023, a dip of 1.8 per cent. Two-wheeler wholesales rose 9 per cent to 17,11,662 units last month against 15,66,594 units in the year-ago period, it added. Scooter dispatches last month climbed to 6,06,250 units from 5,49,290 units in August 2023, a growth of 10 per cent. Similarly, motorcycle dispatches from companies to dealers increased by 8 per cent to 10,60,866 units last month from 9,80,809 units in August 2023. The total three-wheeler sales grew 8 per cent to 69,962 units last month against 64,944 units a year ago. "Looking ahead, as the country enters the festive season, demand for vehicles is expected to grow, which will also be duly augmented by the recent announcements of PM E-DRIVE and PM-eBus Sewa Schemes of Government of India," SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said. Passenger vehicle wholesales dip 2% in August as OEMs cut dispatches

<ul><li><keyword id="20025925" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-sales" source="keywords">Auto sales</keyword> in August 2024 recorded a month-on-month decline.</li><li>One of the reasons for the decline in sales was excessive rainfall in the country.</li><li><keyword id="20108734" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FADA" source="keywords">FADA</keyword> has urged banks and NBFCs to tighten funding for dealers with excessive inventory.</li></ul>Auto sales in India experienced a significant decline in August 2024, primarily due to excessive rainfall during this monsoon season, according to a report by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The report highlighted a 7.01% month-on-month (MoM) decline in overall retail auto sales, falling from 20.34 lakh units in July to 18.91 lakh units in August. Despite this monthly decline in sales, the auto sector witnessed a modest 2.88% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to August 2023. "India saw 15.9% <keyword id="22508938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excess-rainfall" source="keywords">excess rainfall</keyword>, with a significant surplus in key regions, disrupting auto retail performance," said a report by FADA. <h2>Decline in sales</h2>The report added that the two-wheeler (2W) segment, despite showing a 6.28% year-on-year growth, registered a 7.29% month-on-month decline. As per the report, market saturation and weather disruptions were the key factors behind the decline in two-wheeler sales. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113016216" title="August auto sales – Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and others report a decline in sales" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> In the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, there was a 4.53% YoY and 3.46% MoM decline, while the commercial vehicle (CV) segment recorded an 8.5% MoM and 6.05% YoY decline. FADA noted that weak industrial demand and weather-related challenges were major contributors to the significant drop in commercial vehicle sales. <h2>Inventory levels continue to be a challenge</h2>FADA also highlighted growing inventory challenges in the PV segment, with stock days ranging between 70-75 days, representing approximately 7.8 lakh vehicles valued at ₹77,800 crore. The report noted that these high inventory levels, combined with aggressive OEM dispatches have created cash flow pressures for dealers, impacting their profitability. "Dealers under pressure due to aggressive OEM dispatches, with dealers facing cash flow challenges and reduced profitability" the report said. <h2>FADA urges banks to tighten funding</h2>To address this, FADA has urged banks and NBFCs to tighten funding for dealers with excessive inventory. Additionally, the report emphasized the need for dealers and OEMs to recalibrate their supply strategies to avoid a potential inventory crisis. For the upcoming months, the report paints an optimistic picture with the festive season offering growth opportunities. FADA urges banks to tighten funding to dealers as rains play spoilsport in August

<keyword id="21999883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Passenger-vehicle-retail-sales" source="keywords">Passenger vehicle retail sales</keyword> in India witnessed a 5 per cent on-year decline in August on account of delayed customer purchases, poor consumer sentiment and persistent heavy rains, industry body <keyword id="20108734" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FADA" source="keywords">FADA</keyword> said on Thursday. The overall <keyword id="762866" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Passenger-vehicle" source="Orion">passenger vehicle</keyword> (PV) registrations last month stood at 3,09,053 units, as compared to 3,23,720 units in August 2023. "Even with the arrival of the <keyword id="19894908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Festive-season" source="keywords">festive season</keyword>, the market remains under significant strain... Inventory levels have reached alarming levels, with stock days now stretching to 70-75 days and inventory totalling 7.8 lakh vehicles, valued at an alarming Rs 77,800 crore," Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President Manish Raj Singhania said in a statement. Rather than responding to the situation, PV Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) continue to increase dispatches to dealers on a month-on-month basis, further exacerbating the issue, he added. "FADA urgently calls upon all banks and NBFCs to intervene and immediately control funding to dealers with excessive inventory," Singhania said, adding that dealers must also act swiftly to stop taking on additional stock to protect their financial health. The OEMs, too, must recalibrate their supply strategies without delay, or the industry faces a potential crisis from this inventory overload, he said. "If this aggressive push of excess stock continues unchecked, the <keyword id="23047448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-retail-ecosystem" source="keywords">auto retail ecosystem</keyword> could face severe disruption," Singhania said. Commercial vehicle registrations saw a 6 per cent year-on-year dip in August, while tractor retail sales also witnessed a drop of 11 per cent as compared to the year-ago period. Two-wheeler sales, however, increased 6 per cent year-on-year to 13,38,237 units in August, as compared to 12,59,140 units in the same month last year, on the back of improved stock availability and the onset of the festive season, Singhania said. Three-wheeler retail sales also increased by 2 per cent to 1,05,478 units last month, as compared to 1,03,782 units in the year-ago period. Overall registrations last month saw an increase of 3 per cent year-on-year at 18,91,499 units, as against 18,38,501 units in August last year. On business outlook in the near term, FADA said it remains cautiously optimistic. While the festive season and improved rural demand present promising opportunities for growth, ongoing weather uncertainties and high inventory levels may temper the overall recovery, it stated. To navigate these challenges, strategic inventory management and targeted marketing initiatives will be crucial in maximising festive sales and mitigating risks from adverse weather conditions, it added.

The overall passenger vehicle (PV) dispatches from companies to dealers stood at 3,50,355 units in July 2023, <keyword id="20081560" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="automobile-industry" source="keywords">automobile industry</keyword> body <keyword id="20185536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIAM" source="keywords">SIAM</keyword> said on Wednesday. <keyword id="21653561" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="utility-vehicles" source="keywords">Utility vehicles</keyword> continued to drive sales of PVs, clocking 1,88,217 units last month, as against 1,80,831 units in July 2023, a growth of 4.1 per cent, as per the data issued by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Passenger cars, however, recorded a drop of 12 per cent at 96,652 units, as against 1,09,859 units in the same month last year. Industry observers pointed out that after high-paced growth witnessed in the past couple of years, the industry is witnessing moderation in demand. Besides, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) also undertook stock corrections in July to reduce inventory in the network. As per SIAM data, <keyword id="22783202" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler-wholesales" source="keywords">two-wheeler wholesales</keyword> grew by 12.5 per cent to 14,41,694 units last month, as compared to 12,82,054 units in July 2023. <keyword id="20067449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="motorcycles" source="keywords">Motorcycles</keyword> wholesales were up 4.1 per cent at 8,50,489 units in July 2024, as against 8,17,206 units in the year-ago month, SIAM said. Scooters sales were up 29.2 per cent at 5,53,642 units last month, as against 4,28,640 units in the year-ago period. Three-wheeler wholesales also rose 5.1 per cent to 59,073 units from 56,204 units in July last year. "Though three-wheeler and two-wheeler segments are performing well, there has been some de-growth of passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles in July 2024, compared to July 2023," SIAM President Vinod Aggarwal said in a statement. He, however, said the above average rainfall coupled with upcoming festive season is likely to again propel growth in the short term. "In addition, enabling budget announcements which emphasise on overall economic growth with fiscal support for infrastructure and rural sector should augur well for the auto sector in the medium-term," Aggarwal said.

The <keyword id="698382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commercial-vehicle-industry" source="Orion">commercial vehicle industry</keyword> volume is expected to grow in the range of 7-10 per cent in the next financial year, rating agency <keyword id="6354972" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Icra" source="Orion">Icra</keyword> said on Tuesday. The volume growth would be on account of government infrastructure spending, replacement demand, back-to-school and office scenarios and e-commerce expansion, it noted. The growth will, however, moderate from 24-26 per cent in the current financial year, it added. Icra noted that the growth trends were visible in third quarter of the current fiscal, with wholesale dispatches reporting a growth of 16 per cent on a year-on-year basis, supported by replacement demand, improvement in the macroeconomic environment, and healthy traction in the underlying industries such as steel, cement, mining, automobiles, and e-commerce. Freight rates continued to hold up, which, coupled with healthy freight availability, is supporting fleet operator viability, it noted. The growth trends continued to be broad-based across all the three sub-segments -- <keyword id="3393306" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medium-heavy-commercial-vehicles" source="Orion">medium &amp; heavy commercial vehicles</keyword> (M&amp;HCV), <keyword id="163353" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="light-commercial-vehicles" source="Orion">light commercial vehicles</keyword> (LCV), and buses, in the third quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2022, Icra said. "Sales in the domestic CV industry continue to be propelled by multiple tailwinds including replacement of ageing vehicles, pick-up in mining, infrastructure and construction activities, improvement in the overall macroeconomic environment and healthy fleet utilisation levels resulting in improved fleet operator viability," Icra Assistant Vice President &amp; Sector Head - Corporate Ratings Sruthi Thomas. Furthermore, the continued thrust of the government on infrastructure development, as evidenced in the increased capex outlay of ₹10 trillion in the Union Budget for 2023-24, would augur well for sustained growth, especially in the heavy truck segment over the near-term, she added. Icra also expects an improvement in the financial performance of the CV OEMs, led by the benefit of operating leverage and the easing commodity prices; accordingly, aggregate operating profit margin of CV OEMs is expected to revive to 6-7 per cent in FY2023 and improve further in the next fiscal. "This in turn, will support the gradual improvement in their credit metrics as well. In terms of the investment outlay, while CV OEMs have limited plans for capacity expansion over the near term, investments in new product development, electric and other alternative fuel vehicles, and tightening emission norms, etc. would continue," Thomas said. Commercial vehicle industry volumes to see 7-10 pc growth in FY24: Icra

At the same time, Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor and Eicher Motor reported healthy growth in sales. Tata Motors reported a 4% fall in total domestic sales to 68,514 units in April as compared to 71,467 units during the same period last year. Total commercial vehicle sales of the automaker also dipped 27% to 22,492 units in April from 30,838 units last year. Also, its total wholesales declined 4% to 69,599 units as compared to 72,468 units last year. Following the weak sales, shares of Tata Motors fell more than 2% on Tuesday. Two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp also reported a dip of 5% in its total wholesales — as it sold 3.96 lakh units in April against 4.18 lakh units last year. Shares of Hero MotoCorp were down more than 2%. Domestic sales for the two wheeler maker declined marginally to 3.86 lakh units in April 2023 from 3.98 lakh units in April 2022. But its exports slumped over 50% to 9,923 units from 20,132 units last year. The company said it expects the momentum to build up in the coming months on account of a combination of multiple factors, including a slew of new product launches, a healthy growth in the country's GDP and positive consumer sentiment. Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor, Eicher Motors shine India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki announced a good sales growth of 6.5% in passenger vehicles to 1.6 lakh units in April as compared to 1.5 lakh during the same period last year. It registered a 7% increase in total dispatches to dealers at 1.6 lakh in April. Its total sales including domestic and exports rose to 1.6 lakh units from 1.5 lakh units last year. As a result, shares of Maruti Suzuki gained 2.15% to ₹8,771. The automaker’s total domestic sales including PV, LCV and OEM stood at 1.43 lakh units as compared to 1.32 lakh units last year. Maruti Suzuki highlighted that it has been facing a shortage of electronic components while it has taken all possible measures to minimise the impact. Meanwhile, TVS Motor Company announced a 4% rise in sales at 3.06 lakh units in April 2023 from 2.95 lakh units in the same month, last year. TVS’ two-wheeler segment delivered a sales growth of 5% to 2.94 lakh units from 2.8 lakh units during the same period last year. Motorcycle volumes rose 10% to 1.52 lakh units from 1.39 lakh units. Scooter sales grew 5% to 1.07 lakh units from 1.02 lakh units last year. Reacting to the April sales numbers, shares of TVS rose 1.55% to ₹1,156 per share. Its electric vehicle, the iQube, reached a sales milestone of 1 lakh units. “The production for April 2023 was constrained due to AIS156 changeover and supply chain challenges, TVS Motor is confident of ramping up from the month of May 2023. The order book for TVS iQube continues to be very robust and TVS Motor will retain the growth momentum,” said the company in an exchange filing. At the same time, Eicher Motors reported a 18% on year jump in sales volumes of Royal Enfield motorcycles at 73,136 units against 62,155 units last year. Meanwhile, the international business of the company declined 49% to 4,255 units that were exported in April 2023 as against 8,303 units in April 2022. The models with engine capacity up to 350cc recorded 26% sales growth at 64,728 units as against 51,564 units in April 2022. Meanwhile, the sales of models with engine capacity exceeding 350cc dropped 21% to 8,408 units sold against 10,591 units in the same period last year.
