<ul><li>Consumers are looking for toxin-free beauty products, and those that suit their specific skin colour.</li><li>They also choose brands based on ingredients, with prominence of genderless beauty and more.</li><li>Pure play beauty and personal care companies are capturing these trends better than their FMCG peers. </li></ul>Gone are the days when every second home housed the same popular shampoo, face cream and soap brands. The new-age consumers, driven by the rising incomes of the middle class, seek beauty products that offer personalization – instead of buying off the rack. A report by <keyword id="3359665" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="redseer" source="Orion">Redseer</keyword> and Peak XV says that consumers are looking for toxin-free products, products that suit their specific skin colour (as opposed to fair &amp; lovely preferences); with an increasing prominence for genderless beauty. There is also a trend wherein consumers are making ingredient-specific purchases, the report adds. Moreso, they are also exposed to tech that allows for customization into products like serums which can make the ‘best fit’. "From acne management to anti-ageing solutions, specialized use cases are where we're seeing a lot of the action. Brands are spending a significant portion of their resources and organisation bandwidth on new product development, R&amp;D, and customer insights to drive more efficacious products to a targeted audience," says Sakshi Chopra, MD, Peak XV. The market share of such specific use case products is expected to be around 60% by 2027, Redseer predicts. “Globally, there's a growing need among consumers for products 'made for them', tailored to individual skin or body types. They are increasingly willing to pay premiums for effective and safe solutions, leading to rapid growth in the masstige and premium categories,” said Rohan Agarwal, Partner, Redseer Strategy Consultants. Skin in the game So, who is winning the game that’s rapidly changing? Undoubtedly, pure-play beauty companies have more skin in this game — like L'oreal, Honasa (Mamaearth) and <keyword id="6376684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nykaa" source="Orion">Nykaa</keyword> as opposed to HUL. The average revenue growth that pure-play BPC companies saw between 2022-2027 is at 10% – that’s five times what FMCG companies in the business see, at 2%. They already have 33% of the market – which is expected to rise to 42% by 2027. The reasons for their ability to disrupt the market are many. For one, pure play companies are able to capture the trend of moving to masstige and premium products better with faster R&amp;D and product development. Some of them have been able to shorten time to market by 50%, the report says. This way, they are able to target a greater number of specific use cases — helping them curb a larger share of the rapidly fragmenting market. As the market breaks off from being ‘mass’, the channels to approach them are just as important as the product itself. Fortunately, a large chunk of these new-age customers are already online. The Indian BPC market is at $30 billion and a third of it — $10 billion is purchased online. There are over 150 million online BPC customers in India. A lot of successful beauty brands are not content on just ‘being online’ and offline – they’re meeting their customers via live commerce, VR/AR stores on metaverse and more. The stock of this online retailer of beauty and fashion products slipped over 13% in the last five sessions. It has been plunging for the last six months, with a 45% fall during the period. Analysts believe that the recent correction is because of volatile market conditions ahead of the Union Budget, amid ongoing corporate earnings and weak cues from global markets that are urging investors to leave overvalued stocks. The list of such stocks also includes other new age companies like Zomato, Policybazaar and Paytm. “I don’t think that Nykaa’s fall in the last 5-6 sessions specifically has its own story. I believe the volatile market environment given we are also at a cusp of the Budget is leading to sharp correction in stocks that are overvalued. These include stocks like Nykaa which are not valued correctly and hence they tend to fall,” Neha Khanna, director at management consultancy firm ValPro, told Business Insider India. She added, “The situation is not specific to Nykaa, it is happening with other overvalued stocks as well like Zomato that also fell during the period. Such sudden falls have happened in the past as well.” Equity markets have been choppy and volatile this entire week, as investors have been reacting to the Q3 earnings, while factoring in budget expectations. Sensex gained 0.5% while Nifty50 went up just 0.28% in the last five days. In the last five sessions, Zomato and PB Fintech (Policybazaar) too slid by 6%. Meanwhile, Paytm has fallen 2%. However, the fall in the company’s stock was limited as the board had announced a share bonus (5 shares for every 1 share held). The company is yet to release its December quarter earnings. “Apparently there is no particular reason for the sharp fall but factors like impending competition, December quarter numbers which may not be good, sell off by pre IPO investors, tired IPO investors selling are leading to sell off. Large scale companies are entering this space like RIL, Adani may also enter in some time. And the expectations that the topline may not be growing as they would have hoped could be another reason for fall,” said an analyst who did not wish to be named. Nykaa slips nearly 8% as steep fall in profit disappoints investors

Sensex, Nifty50 flat in morning trade: Energy, pharma stocks top gainers

In the last five days, the indices have fallen nearly 1% tracking cues from global peers. Asian markets were mixed as investors remained concerned about the rising curbs in China due to Covid-19 cases shooting up. China’s Shanghai SE Composite Index was down 0.20%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 1.14% while Taiwan TSEC 50 Index was down 0.05%. “Indian markets could open flat to mildly higher, in line with mostly higher Asian markets today and despite lower US markets on Monday. U.S. stocks finished lower on Monday for the third time in the past four trading sessions, as a fresh round of COVID-19 shutdowns in China rattled investors,” said Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities. Brent crude oil prices rose on Tuesday after Saudi Arabia denied talks of a hike in oil output, and said OPEC+ might actually consider a further cut in output if needed. Brent crude oil prices gained 0.37%, hovering around $87.77 per barrel. What happened in the US markets Meanwhile, in the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 0.13% lower while the S&amp;P 500 ended 0.39% down. Nykaa: As per reports, private equity player Lighthouse India will sell shares worth ₹320 crore in FSN E-Commerce Ventures, owner of Nykaa, through a block deal today. It is expected to sell shares at around ₹180 - 183.5 per share at 2% discount from Monday’s closing price. NDTV: Gautam Adani-led Adani Group’s open offer to acquire an additional 26% stake in the news broadcaster goes live on Tuesday. The offer opens today and will close on December 5 with a fixed price band of ₹294 per share. Kaynes Technology: The Mysore-based company will make its market debut on exchanges on Tuesday. The IPO was open for subscription from November 10-14. The issue received strong demand from investors as it was subscribed 34.16 times. India GDP growth estimates slashed Ratings agency Crisil <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/indias-gdp-growth-forecast-continues-to-see-cuts/articleshow/95664894.cms">lowered</a> India’s FY23 GDP growth estimates by 30 basis points to 7%. ICRA lowered the Q2 GDP estimates to 6.5%. “We have revised down our forecast for real gross domestic product growth to 7 percent for fiscal 2023 from 7.3 percent, primarily because of the slowdown in global growth that has started to impact our exports and industrial activity,” said Dharmakirti Joshi, chief economist, Crisil. Nykaa — which is a brand of the parent company FSN E-Commerce Venture Limited — was supposed to make its stock exchange debut on November 11, but the listing date was postponed by a day. The company has raised ₹5,352 crore with this public issue. Nearly ₹630 crore will be raised through fresh issue of shares. The price band was set at ₹1,085 to ₹1,125, and the lot size was 12 shares. At a price of ₹1,125, one lot cost up to ₹13,500. Nykaa’s issue was subscribed over 82 times at the end of the bidding process on November 1. The IPO received bids for 216 crore shares against 2.64 crore shares that were offered. A day before its IPO, on October 27, Nykaa raised ₹2,395.8 crore from 174 anchor investors. The Government of Singapore, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Fidelity Investment Fund, JP Morgan Investment Trust, T Rowe Price and others participated in the round. Nykaa intends to use this capital for acquisition of customers as well as new businesses. While Nykaa’s cosmetics business is facing competition from Walmart-owned Myntra, Purplle and few other players, its fashion vertical is pitted against e-commerce giants like Amazon, Flipkart, JioMart and more.
