Earlier this week, the multi-level marketing firm was the subject of a negative article in <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/fortune/2014-01/15/c_118968583.htm">The People's Daily" in China.</a>
The article claimed that the company lies to its distributors, was sold without proper regulatory approvals, and made inaccurate scientific claims.
NuSkin fire back with a <a href="http://ir.nuskin.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=103888&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1891120&amp;highlight=">press release</a> that said the article itself was inaccurate:
"We are dedicated to operating in full compliance with applicable regulations as interpreted and enforced by the government of China," it continued. "Nu Skin has an 11-year history of doing business in China under these regulations. Our business activities are regularly monitored by the government in this rapidly growing marketplace. As is our practice, we will communicate openly with regulators to address questions arising from this article.
"Nu Skin has government-approved direct selling licenses to operate in a majority of provinces in China. The most recent government licensure in July further expanded our direct selling footprint to include 19 of the country's 32 provinces.
"We actively educate our sales force to follow all regulations as well as company policies and procedures, and any member of our sales force not operating in accordance with local law or with our company policies is subject to discipline."

NuSkin Stock Halted After Plumeting Over 20%

Shares of multi-level marketing company <keyword id="2016219" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="NuSkin">NuSkin</keyword> are getting slammed this morning after an article in "<a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/fortune/2014-01/15/c_118968583.htm">The People's Daily" in China</a> criticized its marketing practices. 
Shares of Nu-Skin were last trading down more than 17%. 
A spokesperson for NuSkin said the article in "The People's Daily" is full of "inaccuracies and exaggerations." 
From NuSkin: 
"The article contains inaccuracies and exaggerations that are not representative of our business in China. The publication did not request any information from Nu Skin nor did it attempt to verify any information that it has since reported as fact.
"We are dedicated to operating in full compliance with applicable regulations as interpreted and enforced by the government of China. Nu Skin has an 11-year history of doing business in China under these regulations, and the government has regularly reviewed our business activities. Nu Skin has received direct selling licenses to operate in various provinces and municipalities in China. The most recent government licensure in July expanded our direct selling footprint to include 19 of the country's 32 provinces and municipalities.

Shares Of NuSkin Tank After A Negative Article In China Criticizes Its Marketing Practices

UPDATE 1: CNBC's <a href="https://twitter.com/CNBC/status/295942001814302720">Herb Greenberg,</a> citing an unnamed source, reports that the <keyword id="88852" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="FTC">FTC</keyword>'s press conference about an allegedly illegal pyramid scheme does not have to do with <keyword id="380994" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Herbalife">Herbalife</keyword>.

Shares of Herbalife, the multi-level marketing firm that hedge fund titan <keyword id="1150206" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bill-Ackman">Bill Ackman</keyword> is shorting because he thinks it's a "pyramid scheme", were getting smoked moments ago.
The stock was trading down about 9%. It's now down about 4.5%. 
Another multi-level marketing company, Nu-Skin, was getting slammed as well. It was last down 4.4%.
Nobody had any idea what was going on.
Traders got jitters about an FTC announcement in Kentucky that will target an allegedly illegal pyramid scheme.
There was no evidence that it had anything to do with Herbalife, which is based in California, but the news of the FTC going against anyone was being cited as an excuse for the selloff.

The Federal Trade Commission will co-host a press conference in Lexington, KY, today at 1 p.m. ET (Noon Central Time), with the Kentucky Attorney General’s office, to announce a major action against an allegedly illegal pyramid scheme.
Steve Baker, Director of the FTC’s Midwest Region Office, and Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway will be available to answer reporters’ questions.

UPDATED: Shares Of Herbalife And Nu-Skin Are Getting Crushed 

Shares of multi-level marketing stocks Nu-Skin and Herbalife are tumbling today. 
Earlier this week, a negative article ran in the "<a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/fortune/2014-01/15/c_118968583.htm">The People's Daily" in China</a> that criticized NuSkin's marketing practices. It also said that the anti-aging products seller could be operating as a pyramid scheme. 
A spokesperson for NuSkin told Business Insider that the article was full of "inaccuracies and exaggerations." 
<a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303465004579323840382392148?mg=reno64-wsj&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB10001424052702303465004579323840382392148.html&amp;fpid=2,7,121,122,201,401,641,1009">The Wall Street Journal is reporting</a> that China's State Administration of Industry and Commerce said they would investigate NuSkin following the article. 
Meanwhile, shares of Herbalife, an MLM that sells nutritional products, are off more than 5 percent.
Herbalife is the company that hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has publicly called a "pyramid scheme." 
In December 2012, Ackman said that he was shorting more than 20 million shares of Herbalife with a price target of $0.
Since he announced his bearish bet, a number of fund managers, including Carl Icahn and George Soros, have piled on by going long the stock. Shares of Herbalife has risen more than 86% since Ackman made those comments resulting in hundreds of millions of mark-to-market losses for Pershing Square Capital Management.

Two Multi-Level Marketing Stocks Are Getting Hammered Today

Shares of NuSkin are going nuts today following a more than $500,000 fine from a Chinese regulator. 
The stock was last trading up more than 26% at about $94 a share.
Back in January, NuSkin's stock plummeted after China's State Administration for Industry &amp; Commerce (SAIC) <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/16/china-idUSL3N0KQ3PV20140116">said it would investigate</a> following a report in "<a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/fortune/2014-01/15/c_118968583.htm">The People's Daily" in China</a> that criticized NuSkin's marketing practices and alleged that it's a pyramid scheme. 
NuSkin is a multi-level marketing company that sells anti-aging products. Chinese direct selling laws are very strict. 
Today, China's SAIC fined the company $540,000 for misleading consumers and illegal sales, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-china-fines-nu-skin-eyes-tighter-direct-sales-control-2014-24">Reuters reported.</a>
Meanwhile, Herbalife, another multi-level marketing company that sells weight loss products, is trading higher this morning. The stock was last trading up more than 6%. 
Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who is famous for his Herbalife short, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ackman-china-herbalife-slides-2014-3">has accused the company of violating Chinese direct-selling laws.</a> He believes the company operates as a "pyramid scheme." 
Earlier this month, it was revealed that Herbalife <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/herbalife-halted-2014-3">is being investigated by the Federal Trade Commission.</a> Since then, Herbalife's stock has declined.

Shares Of Nu Skin And Herbalife Are On A Major Tear

<a href="http://nypost.com/2014/01/24/chinese-media-target-herbalife-as-pyramid-scheme/">The New York Post's Michelle Celarier</a> just published an article about Chinese media outlet First Financial Daily having investigative report on Herbalife. According to the Post, that article in China questions whether Herbalife's business practices are in accordance with Chinese laws.
The report in China is old, though. It was from last August, according to the Post, which says it's only recently being noticed. 
Herbalife is a multi-level marketing company that sells nutritional products such as weightloss shakes and supplements. 
MLM NuSkin was recently the subject of a negative article in China that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shares-of-nuskin-tumble-2014-1">questioned its marketing practices. </a> NuSkin's stock fell on that report.
Shares of Herbalife closed lower yesterday after Massachusetts Senator Edward Markey sent letters to the FTC and SEC calling on the regulators to investigate Herbalife's business practices. 
Herbalife is the stock that hedge fund manager Bill Ackman of Pershing Square is short. Ackman has publicly called the company a "pyramid scheme" and he thinks regulators will shut it down. 
Herbalife has refuted his allegations. 
Not everyone in the hedge fund world agrees with Ackman either. His long-time rival Carl Icahn is one of the biggest shareholders of Herbalife. Icahn bought the stock after Ackman gave a 342-slide presentation about Herbalife in December 2012. 
Icahn has publicly said the he continues to think the company has a great business model and that it's undervalued.

"Labor market indicators showed some improvement this month. The current employment index increased 6 points from its revised reading in December," according to the report. <li>Homebuilder confidence <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/january-nahb-homebuilder-confidence-2014-1">fell to 56 in January</a>, worse than the consensus expectation for the NAHB index to remain at 58 (a reading over 50 shows that most builders think sales conditions are good).</li>
