Lok Sabha Election 2019: Candidate list and party symbol for North East Delhi

<ul><li>The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 is one of the primary issues in the north east states that are going to vote today. </li><li>While the BJP is playing the development card, Congress is stressing how they can stop the bill from becoming a reality. </li><li>It’s an obstacle for BJP since they even reiterate wanting to enact the bill in their election manifesto.</li></ul> As the first phase of India’s general election begins, the north east states of India will be voting against the backdrop of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 and the ongoing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-citizenship-bill-assam-protests-rise-conrad-sangma-and-aribam-syam-sharma-join/articleshow/67830987.cms">protests</a> in Assam. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) first introduced this bill in the lower house of parliament — the Lok Sabha — during the winter session, but it is still pending approval from the upper house, the Rajya Sabha. Despite severe opposition, in its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/bjp-manifesto-for-lok-sabha-election-2019-on-data-privacy-and-protection/articleshow/68775987.cms">election manifesto</a>, the BJP <a href="https://www.bjp.org/en/manifesto2019">reiterated</a> its commitment towards the bill saying that it is “for the protection of individuals of religious minority communities from neighbouring countries escaping persecution.” There are two facets to why some people have an issue with the new amendment. First off, Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Bhuddists and Parsis from the neighboring countries of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan will be able to apply for citizenship provided they’ve been in India for seven years. In contrast, the currently provision requires 12 years of residence in India in order to eligible for citizenship. Secondly, it’s in contradiction to the Assam Accord. The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 wants to grant nationality to non-Muslims who have come into India upto December 31, 2014. But, the Assam Accord dictates that all immigrants to have entered the country illegally after 1971 have to be deported — irrespective of religion. The fear is that in relaxing the norms around citizenship, as many as 20 million Hindus will migrate from Bangladesh to India and wipe out the local communities. Not to mention that the new amendment completely ignores Muslims. Nearly 4 million are, more or less, illegal immigrants since the final draft list of the National Registry of Citizens (NRC) was <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-45082757">released</a> to determine the citizenship of nearly 15 million migrants in north east India. India’s current prime minister and a member of the BJP has repeatedly asserted that illegal Muslim immigrants will be deported. Some feel that Bangladesh is <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-45002670">unlikely</a> to accept such a request, and thus, this may end up being another Rohingya where a large amount of people will be left stateless. Congress has played that card to their advantage backing the voters and assuring them that the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 is a serious threat to their existence. The BJP has cautiously stated that they will “not take any step that hurts the interests of Assamese and other indigenous communities” and has switched gears to focus on development in the north east states highlighting how the Modi government has been able to complete multiple infrastructure projects in the area. Nonetheless, the continuous tensions have had a polarising effect in the north east states. On April 7, a Muslim man was heckled and abused for ‘selling beef’ and also made to eat pork, even though that goes against his religion. Fourteen out of 25 north east’s parliamentary constituencies are going to go to the polls today and the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 is one of the major issues in these states.

Congress, on the other hand, has its hopes pinned on <keyword id="39794" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheila-Dixit">Sheila Dixit</keyword>, Delhi’s former Chief Minister who held her seat for 15 years. But data from the Election Commission shows that Dixit is way behind in the vote count with only 21.3% of the vote share versus Tiwari strong lead with 60.3% of the vote share. Even the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Dilip Pandey, only has 14.1% of the vote share to his name. Tiwari is also feeling confident about his win stating that he will come out ahead with a margin of over 200,000 votes while speaking to <a href="https://www.news18.com/videos/india/could-win-by-a-margin-of-over-2-lakh-votes-manoj-tiwari-2156349.html">News18.</a> He also said that the BJP is poised to win nation-wide with a margin of over 350 seats. Dixit, on the other hand, maintains that she will be victorious overcoming the divisions in religion and caste in the constituency.

Manoj Tiwari leads the election from North East Delhi

<ul><li>Three-time chief minister of Delhi, <keyword id="5267" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sheila-Dikshit">Sheila Dikshit</keyword>, will contest the national election for Congress from Delhi.</li><li>Dikshit, now 81 years old, lost the assembly election to Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal in 2013.</li><li>The grand old party has fielded the veteran politician from North East Delhi, against BJP counterpart Manoj Tiwari.</li></ul>81-year old Sheila Dikshit will stand for the Indian National Congress from Delhi in the Parliamentary elections that are underway. She will take on actor, singer-turned politician from Bihar, Manoj Tiwari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the <keyword id="2146480" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="North-East-Delhi-constituency">North East Delhi constituency</keyword>. Manoj Tiwari had won the election from the same constituency in 2014 and he is the state unit president of the BJP, making him Dikshit's direct rival in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. Earlier in January 2019, Dikshit was made the chief of Congress' Delhi state unit. Political speculators have pitched her return <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/opinion/sensing-tailwinds-is-sheila-dikshit-itching-for-delhi-comeback-with-lok-sabha-battle-1975613.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">as a signal for a possible alliance</a> with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), if the need arises. Dikshit's candidature was declared along with five other names-- Ajay Maken from New Delhi, Arvinder Singh Lovely from East Delhi, <keyword id="7553879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jp-agarwal-from-chandni-chowk">JP Agarwal from Chandni Chowk</keyword>, Rajesh Lilothia from North West Delhi, and <keyword id="7553878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahabal-Mishra-from-West-Delhi-">Mahabal Mishra from West Delhi.</keyword>

 Dikshit was the chief minister of Delhi for 15 years from 1998 before she lost to AAP led by Arvind Kejriwal in 2013. She was even pitched as the chief minister candidate for the Congress in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election in 2017, before she withdrew from it. Dikshit's legacy includes a significant upgrade in the national capital's physical infrastructure. Her image was also tainted by the allegations of her family's involvement in kickbacks and corruption around the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Her son, Sandeep Dikshit, was also a former member of Parliament from East Delhi.
