Maggi is in trouble. Governments across the country are filing cases and deploying food inspectors to test Maggi samples. Some are fawning to fine Nestlé for misbranding the noodles brand as a healthy food alternative. 
 
The company recently released an official statement saying, “People can be confident that Maggi Noodle products are safe to eat. The quality and safety of our products are the top priorities for our Company.” 
 
Most find it hard to believe that a world class brand like Nestlé would not comply with industry norms. Some argue that a company as blue chip as this one has more at stake than anyone else. 
 
That didn’t stop the Delhi government from banning sales of Maggi noodles today. 
 
What if this leads to a chain of bans across India till it wipes our favorite ‘two minute snack’ off the map? 
 
The only way to realize the worth of the brand is to witness a market without it. How much exactly would the brand be set back for? What would the market look like without India’s leading noodles seller? Let’s find out. 
 
Enter a world without Maggi. 
 
It’s impossible to quantify the exact amount of losses the parent brand would incur. Considering that Maggi accounts for around 15-16,000 Crores of Nestlé’s turnover one could guess it’s surely not in pennies. 
 
Industry experts project that the brand would suffer a three stage hit. 
 
“If Nestlé can’t sell Maggi at all, that in itself will be a big setback for the brand. It’s also a brand for ketchup and other condiments. The whole brand will get impacted because of this, even when the ban would be on Maggi noodles. More than the money, Nestlé’s reputation in India will go for a big hit”, Arvind Singhal, Chairman at Management Consulting firm Technopak predicts. 
 
Maggi currently sells instant soups, ketchups, seasonings and instant noodles in India. 
 
What’s the way forward if it does get banned? 
 
“Maggi as a brand has not been banned. It’s just one product. The company can still have a product recall and re-launch it by saying it’s totally compliant”, Singhal says. 
 
While there is no use crying over spilt Maggi, looks like it’ll take more than a few bans to wipe out your favorite midnight snack.

without Maggi. Possible impacts on brand Nestlé

Singapore food authorities, after conducting safety tests, concluded that <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> did not pose any health risk and have allowed sale of the instant noodles manufactured in India. 
 
The Straits Times reported that the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) informed local importers that sale of the brand's noodles from India may be resumed. 
 
Last week, AVA had advised importers to withhold sales of Maggi while it conducted laboratory tests, in the backdrop of food scare in India that it contained higher-than-permissible levels of lead. 
 
The news report stated that results from AVA's laboratory tests, which cover "a wide range of hazards associated with food" showed that the India-made Maggi noodles met local food safety standards. 
 
Maggi noodles produced in other countries were also tested and results showed that they also met the food safety requirements. 
 
Food products that fail tests will not be allowed for sale, the AVA had earlier said. 
 
Singapore has imported "a small amount" of the brand's noodles manufactured in India. 
 
India has banned the sale of the Maggi instant noodles after MSG and excess levels of lead were found in samples tested in New Delhi and in Uttar Pradesh. However, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> claimed that Maggi was safe and the instant noodles were taken-off shelves as faith of consumers had shaken.

India-made Maggi is perfectly safe in Singapore

Weeks after India banned <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword> and ordered its manufacturer to pull thousands of packets from stores, the UK's <keyword id="33543" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Food-Standards-Agency">Food Standards Agency</keyword> (FSA) has found the product imported from India safe for consumption; says it does not contain excess of <keyword id="23204" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="lead">lead</keyword>. The food agency conducted tests on various samples as a precaution following a ban on the <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> product in India, reported the Economic Times. 

	"The FSA can confirm that results from testing samples of Maggi Noodles in the UK have all found that levels of lead in the product is well within EU permissible levels and would not be a concern to consumers," the financial daily reported, quoting FSA on its website. 
 Sale of Maggi noodles were banned in India after the Food Safety and <keyword id="179673" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Standards-Authority-of-India">Standards Authority of India</keyword> found lead beyond permissible limits and cases of mislabeling of monosodium glutamate content on the packet. Meanwhile, Nestle informed the FSA that the only variety of Maggi Noodles imported into the UK from India was the 'masala flavour'. The FSA tested several flavours from the Maggi noodles range including the masala flavor and found the levels of lead to be well within <keyword id="6355110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="European-Union">European Union</keyword>'s permissible levels. It tested samples collected from Nestle, local and port authorities of the UK. <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> is also preparing a blueprint for a possible re-launch of the Maggi instant noodles. Experts feel the issue of the recall and ban on the noodles might be resolved in the next three to six months. The <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> recently allowed Nestle India to export Maggi noodles but did not lift the ban on its local sales. 

	A Nestle India spokesperson told ET: "We note that the UK Food Standards Agency cleared Maggi noodles after reviewing results from around 900 samples." 
 Its finding that "levels of lead in the product is well within EU permissible levels and would not be a concern to consumers comes after regulatory authorities in other countries including Singapore, Australia and <keyword id="22501" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="New-Zealand">New Zealand</keyword> also cleared the product", the spokesperson said.

Good news for all Maggi lovers! UK Food Standards Agency Finds Made in India Maggi noodles safe

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a> has sent fresh samples of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> for testing as it resumed production of Maggi recently. This means the instant 2-minute noodles will be back on sale December onwards. 
 The Bombay High Court recently had directed <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> to also get fresh samples of Maggi noodles tested by the labs and once they get the approval, Maggi will be back with new packaging, instructions and old taste. 
 
Production of Maggi noodles has, reportedly, resumed in Karnataka, Punjab and Goa. 
 
Maggi noodles was banned in India in June after MSG and excess content of lead was found in the packets. 
 
This dented the image and revenue sales of Nestle India as Maggi used to be its biggest brand, accounting for about 30% of sales at the company. 
 
However, it is expected that Nestle India’s Maggi will recover the losses. The company has started rigorous advertising for Maggi's return. 
 
Edelweiss in a note stated "We appreciate the company's effort to up the ante on advertising and promotions, but this will depress margins in the coming quarters. We believe Nestle is unlikely to garner the earlier 70% share of the noodle pie.”

Maggi will be back in December!

After Canada, the British food regulator has declared <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>'s <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> noodles made-in-India to be perfectly safe for consumption. The food regulator has tested the tastemaker and the noodles separately like its Indian counterpart. "None of the products tested in the UK so far has given the FSA any indication that EU (<keyword id="6355110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="European-Union">European Union</keyword>) maximum limits have been exceeded," the Economic Times reported, quoting a <keyword id="2937366" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="UK-Food-Safety-Agency">UK Food Safety Agency</keyword> (FSA) spokesperson. 

	"Some of the samples tested consisted of the noodles and flavour combined and others have been tested separately. Where they have been tested separately the levels of lead reported in the flavouring have not given cause for concern," the spokesperson added. 
 The <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food-Safety">Food Safety</keyword> and <keyword id="179673" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Standards-Authority-of-India">Standards Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>), which banned Maggi noodles in June, didn't respond to queries regarding the FSA statement. 

	Due to the Maggi ban, many companies have withdrawn instant noodles from shops, uncertain about regulatory action, while many costumers have stopped buying packaged snacks. 
 

	However, the UK FSA spokesperson said the risks to consumers from lead in food relate to "long-term exposure from the whole of the diet". 
 

	Meanwhile, the permissible lead content is expressed differently in the two countries - 0.2g/kg in the UK and 2.5 ppm (parts per million) in India. 
 

	Besides the UK, four other countries where made in India Maggi noodles were sent have declared the product safe. These are Canada, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. 
 

	Nestle said there is no difference in the noodles meant for export and for the Indian market. "The noodles made for the export market are produced on the same manufacturing lines as those for the Indian market at our factory in Bicholim," the company told ET in an email. 
 

	The company said it follows the same quality standards everywhere in the world - in India, in the US, in the EU, everywhere.
 

	There needs to be greater clarity on the rules in India, said RK Bansal, former director at the food processing ministry and a member of the committee that formulated the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. 
 

	"There are no guidelines prescribed in the regulations unfortunately," he said. "Due to lack of clarity, Maggi noodles can be treated as one product and the tastemaker can be treated as a different product. Since there are no set guidelines, it is totally up to the analysts in laboratories what they want to do and each analyst may have a different take on this." 
 

	Moreover, the British regulator said it didn't test for monosodium glutamate (MSG) content because this is allowed under EU rules. The Indian watchdog had found fault with Nestle over the Maggi noodles packaging bearing a 'No added MSG' message.

Weird? Made-in-India Maggi safe for UK!

<keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> India wants to manufacture <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword> at all plants after it resumed production at three of its plants - Nanjangud (Karnataka), Moga (Punjab) and Bicholim (Goa) - in the country. 
 
The company is discussing the matter with state authorities. 
 "In compliance with the orders of the High Court of Bombay, fresh samples from these newly manufactured batches will be sent for testing to the three accredited laboratories mandated by the High Court," Nestle said in a communique to the <keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword>. 
 
The company, however, said that it would start the sale of Maggi noodles only after clearance from these three laboratories. 
 
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) earlier sought clarification from Nestle over media reports on resumption of Maggi noodles production. 
 In June, Nestle India was forced to withdraw Maggi from market and stop production following tests by certain labs allegedly finding <keyword id="23204" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="lead">lead</keyword> and MSG beyond permissible limits. 
 This was followed by a ban on Maggi noodles by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>), which said the noodles were "unsafe and hazardous" for consumption. 
 
The company had withdrawn the instant noodle brand from the market. 
 
Nestle India, took a hit of Rs 450 crore, including destroying over 30,000 tonnes of the instant noodles since June. 
 
The company has said that it would continue with the existing formula of the product and would not change their ingredients. 
 
After the ban was imposed, Nestle India had reported a standalone loss of Rs 64.40 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2015, its first quarterly loss in over three decades. 
 
It had posted a net profit of Rs 287.86 crore during the April-June quarter of 2014-15.

Nestle asserts lead content in Maggi noodles is ‘below detectable limits’ following Supreme Court of India ruling to reopen class-action case

<keyword id="105382" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ambuja-Cements">Ambuja Cements</keyword> has received Rs 20 crore from <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> to burn packets of Maggi noodles. 
 
The two-minute noodles were found harmful after excess lead and MSG was found in the packets. Nestle India has withdrawn all Maggi packets from the market. 
 
A Nestle India spokesperson told news agency PTI that Gujarat Ambuja Cements was helping them to destroy the Maggi noodles being withdrawn by us from the market. 
 
“In addition to the value of stocks being destroyed there will be additional costs to take into account, for example bringing back stock from the market, transporting the stock to the destruction points and destruction cost etc,” the spokesperson told the news agency. 
 
Nestle India recently had informed that Maggi noodles worth Rs 320 crore will be destroyed as it was banned by FSSAI.

Nestle is paying Ambuja Cements Rs 20cr to destroy thousands of Maggi packs

Yoga guru <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Baba+Ramdev+">Baba Ramdev </a>planned to take on the instant noodles market with his ‘healthy alternative’ you could have instead - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Atta+noodles">Patanjali Atta (wheat) noodles</a>. Few weeks into the launch, and the noodles is already getting into trouble, just like the man himself. 
 
According to Zee News reports, bugs were found in a packet of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Atta+noodles">Patanjali’s Atta noodles</a> in Jind, Haryana. These bugs were spotted inside a sealed pack and the customer is reportedly gearing up to sue the company. 
 
Also, India’s food regulator, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">Food Safety and Standards Authority of India</a> (FSSAI) has said that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Baba+Ramdev+">Ramdev</a>’s company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali Ayurved</a> didn’t have approvals for instant noodles before it’s launch. Patanjali officials however said it is not required to get a product specific approval to launch instant noodles. They argue noodles falls under the ‘pasta’ category, and they had a license for the same. 
 
While many dismiss these initial reports, there is no denying that incidents like these could snowball into a bigger controvery. Patanjali noodles has huge potential in a market where people are increasingly looking for quick and easy meal. While a sizeable chunk of the pie is hooked onto <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maggi">Maggi</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a>’s low prices give it the edge in an increasingly crowded market. Most of it’s products sell at 30-50% cheaper rates than it’s peers from multinational brands.

Bugs and Approvals, another controversy brewing
with Baba Ramdev’s Noodles?

Nestle’s iconic noodle brand <keyword id="13633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggie">Maggie</keyword> seems to be knee-deep in trouble. The product has been accused of high lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG) content, which has adversely impacted its distribution. 
 
While we all know what has happened, it would not be wrong to ponder the impact of the controversy on the entire instant noodle market in the larger picture. Will the crisis have a ripple effect in the overall noodles market in India? Or are Maggie’s competitors actually gaining from the brand’s crisis? 
 “Well, it is a bad news for the entire industry. When Maggie gets embroiled in a controversy, questions are raised at all other packaged foods as well,” said brand expert <keyword id="175362" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harish-Bijoor">Harish Bijoor</keyword>, CEO of Bijoor Consults. 
 
He explained that the controversy will not only impact the instant noodle market but will also adversely affect other packaged food category. “People are going to question everything that is packaged-- be it your biscuits or cola or anything else,” Bijoor added. 
 Adman <keyword id="132751" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naresh-Gupta">Naresh Gupta</keyword>, managing partner, Bang in the Middle too noted that the instant noodle market will be adversely impacted by the crisis. “Maggi is the category, there is no noodle market in India, there is a Maggi market,” he asserted. 
 
However brand guru Jagdeep Kapoor, chairman and managing director of Samsika Marketing Consultancy, does not see the crisis negatively affecting the category in the long run. He believed that the noodles market in India has been growing and will continue to grow. 
 
“Consumers are sensible people. They choose the categories that benefit them and they choose brands which add value to their lives,” he averred. 
While most of us would like to believe that competition stands to gain from Maggie’s crisis considerably. However, experts believed otherwise. Bijoor did not mince words when he says that the crisis has also hit other players as trust in the brand has been lost and it is a scar on the brand that will remain forever. Ad guru Gupta too stated that competition would find it difficult to match up to the 30 year old brand, which enjoys a cult status in the market. 
 
“Other players will benefit but to a small extent, but overall the market will decline. There are many places where the only food available is Maggi and eggs, competing brands have a long way to go before they build that scale,” he explained. 
 
On the other hand, Kapoor is optimistic and said that consumers have become smarter over the years and will continue to buy brand they have faith in. “As long as the category they participate in, adds value to their lives and as long as the brand is able to build on brand trust, with pure intentions, the brand in the categories would grow.” 
 
According to market estimates, in 2012, the instant noodles market was pegged at nearly Rs 2,000 crore industry. The category has been growing at 25% per annum. And the major brands playing around are Nestle India’s Maggi, ITC’s Sunfeast Yipee, and Hindustan Unilever’s <keyword id="651250" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="knorr-soupy-noodles">Knorr Soupy Noodles</keyword> among others.

If you thought Nestle Maggie's crisis will help surge sales of its rivals, think again!

ITC has decided to remove the "no added MSG" disclaimer from Yipee noodles under FSSAI’s direction. 
 The <keyword id="6376343" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Food-Safety-and-Standards-Authority-of-India">Food Safety and Standards Authority of India</keyword> (FSSAI), in connection with noodles of another brand, had held that such statement of having no MSG was "inappropriate", ITC said in a statement. 
 
"Therefore, ITC is voluntarily taking steps to remove the phrase 'no added MSG' from its labels in its new batches of packaging and consumers should ignore this on the current packaging. ITC would like to once again assure consumers that MSG is not added to Sunfeast YiPPee! Noodles," ITC said in the statement. 
 
It added: "In recent weeks, there has been some confusion about the manner of declaration of MSG in packaged food items". 
 
"Under the FSS Act, if a manufacturer adds MSG to the product, the quantum of MSG so added needs to be declared. Since no MSG is added in Yippee noodles, the packages carried a statement to that effect, i.e., "contains no added MSG," it added. 
 
The food regulator has ordered testing of several noodles, pasta and macaroni brands that includes Top Ramen, Foodles and Wai Wai to check if they comply with the food security norms. 
 
Nestle India, ITC, Indo Nissin Food Ltd, GSK Consumer Healthcare, CG Foods India, Ruchi International and AA Nutrition Ltd’s products are being tested under direction from FSSAI.

ITC will withdraw "no added MSG" from its Yippee
noodles

Despite finding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> safe after testing, the officials have refused to give it a clean chit. 
 
Samples of two-minute Maggi noodles from Goa were sent to a government-run laboratory in Karnataka for re-analysis and it was found that the instant noodles were safe for consumption. 
 
However, Director of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Salim Veljee, refused to give a clean chit. 
 
He said the negative result did not necessarily mean a clean chit for the company's product because of contrary findings made by other state and central government laboratories while testing the Nestle-manufactured noodles, which have been banned in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=goa">Goa</a> as well as across the country. 
 
"The samples of these noodles were subjected for a re-analysis of the said five Maggi noodle products at the Goa State Pollution Control Board laboratory at Patto, Panaji and the results of the analysis were found to be consistent with the findings of the Goa FDA Lab in declaring the lead contents to be below the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm and negative for MSG," Veljee told reporters. 
 
Goa had <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">banned sale of Maggi</a> in June 8 and several tonnes of Maggi noodles were destroyed after tests in state-run laboratories across India revealed that the popular snack had excess amounts of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MSG">MSG</a> and presence of lead. 
 
On the instructions of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI)</a>, which described the tests conducted in Goa as not up to the mark, new Maggi noodles samples were then sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysuru, Karnataka for another round of tests, which have only now confirmed the Goa FDA's results. 
 
Veljee added that the CFTRI reports re-confirmed the consistent analytical results findings of the State FDA Goa laboratory, in which all the said five samples of Nestle's Maggie conformed with the Food Safety and Standards Rules/Regulation 2011. 
 
Lead in all the five samples was "reported to be well below the permissible limit as well as negative for the MSG in the said samples, which analysis was performed separately on the noodles and taste maker", he added.

Maggi is safe to eat but no clean chit yet

Have you ever thought about an alternative to <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword>? Well, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> is mulling over it. 
 
After the two-minute noodles was banned in India over excess lead content and MSG in it, Nestle India has started working hard to come up with a snack that would replace Maggi till it is repositioned. 
 
"With no clarity over when Maggi in its existing form will be back on shelves, Nestle is working on alternate snacking options," one of two persons who confirmed the development told Economic Times, adding “Snacking is a huge opportunity which Nestle doesn't want to vacate, and it already has an existing backend for the culinary business." 
 
While re-launching Maggi could take several months, Nestle India might launch a ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook food. 
 
Nestle was guarded in its response to ET's queries. "We are working hard to resolve the situation and we aim to be back in the market as soon as we can. Adhering to Nestle's rigorous quality policies and testing protocol, we are confident that we will come back soon, ensuring food safety, as we always do," the Nestle spokesperson told the financial daily. 
 
Maggi noodles accounts for a third of Nestle India’s business with sales of over Rs 2,000 crore. 
 
Due to the ban, the plants in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Goa and Himachal Pradesh are suspended. 
 
Meanwhile, Nestle India is working together to re-build the brand. Nestle Global Chief Executive Paul Bulcke said that the Maggi products were completely safe and were re-called as consumers faith had shaken. 
 
"Food has never been safer. But there is this perception and we have to work on that. The only thing that interests me is to have the product back as soon as possible and that things are cleared up," he told news agency AFP. 
 
"Any health concerns raised by a credible source such as FSSAI will most certainly damage customer loyalty and consideration of a food brand," said David Haigh, CEO of the London-based brand valuation consultancy.
