Telecom giant <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> has entered into an agreement with Nokia Networks to expand its <keyword id="122479" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G">4G</keyword> presence in six new circles. Under the agreement, Nokia will be responsible for expansion of Airtel’s 4G presence using the former’s radio network. 
	 
	With the deal signed, users can expect to witness super-fast mobile broadband services in the six circles. It should be noted that Nokia is already a supplier of TD-LTE network to Airtel, and will also deploy TD-LTE on the 2300MHz in 2 other circles. 
	 
	“With our commitment to build an efficient Internet eco-system in India, we continue to introduce new technologies and strengthen our existing capabilities. Having already launched the high-speed 4G services across four circles of India, we are now looking at extending this enriching high-speed broadband experience to new circles on 1800MHz band. Our association with Nokia Networks will help us support our vision and provide a superior 4G network,” said Abhay Savargaonkar, chief technology officer of Bharti Airtel. 
	 
	Commenting on the pact, Sandeep Girotra, Vice President and Head of India Region, Nokia Networks, noted, “We are happy to expand our TD-LTE footprint with Bharti and partner with them to deploy India’s first FDD-LTE in six new circles. Our rich experience gained in deploying FDD-LTE and TD-LTE to operators around the globe will ensure a fast and smooth network rollout. On top of that, our Flexi Zone solution will ensure the best possible LTE performance even in dense areas.” 
	 
	Under the deal, Airtel will get cloud-ready network management system, Net Act, for effective and consolidated monitoring and optimization of the LTE network as well as services such as network planning and optimization, network implementation.

Bharti Enters Into Agreement With Nokia To

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) Nokia on Monday announced that its CloudBand-based software products have started powering Bharti Airtels Voice over LTE (VoLTE) network in India. Finnish telecom gear maker firm Nokia in April bagged a deal worth more than Rs 7,500 crore from Bharti Airtel to deploy 5G ready network across the country. According to Nokia, the network supports over 110 million customers, making it the largest cloud-based VoLTE network in India and the largest Nokia-run VoLTE in the world. "Nokia's carrier-grade cloud software solutions drive simplicity and flexibility and will further strengthen Airtel's solid 5G network foundation and transition to innovative digital solutions that are customer and experience centric," said Bhaskar Gorti, President of Nokia Software and Nokia Chief Digital Officer. The cloud-based VoLTE deployment allows Airtel to provide its mobile customers faster and more reliable, cost-efficient call connectivity. Nokia, which is the largest 4G vendor in Airtel network, will help lay the foundation for providing 5G connectivity in the future by deploying 300,000 radio units across several spectrum bands in all 22 telecom service areas expected to be completed by 2022. Nokia's VoLTE solution enables Airtel to free up spectrum by ramping down its 3G network, allowing the operator to utilize the freed up spectrum to deploy 4G/LTE services for better speed and capacity. "We are delighted to deepen our strategic partnership with Nokia to build a future ready and agile network. The country's largest open cloud based VoLTE network is a major milestone in Airtel's journey," added Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel. The headlines from the release are that Lumia sales are better than expected and operating expenses are lower than expected.
It sold 4.4 million Lumia phones. Lumia phones run Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software. They are supposed to be the savior of Nokia. This number may be better than expected, but it's going to be ~10% of how many iPhones Apple sells this quarter. And less than 10% of how many smartphones Samsung sells. So Nokia still has a lot of work ahead of it.

Nokia today provided preliminary information on certain aspects of its fourth quarter 2012 financial performance and also provided preliminary information on its outlook for the first quarter 2013.
Nokia now estimates that Devices &amp; Services has exceeded expectations and achieved underlying profitability in the fourth quarter 2012.
- Mobile Phones business unit and Lumia portfolio delivered better than expected results; and
- Operating expenses were lower than expected.
- Devices &amp; Services non-IFRS operating margin for the fourth quarter 2012 now expected to be between break even and positive 2 percent.
Seasonality and competitive environment are expected to have a negative impact on the first quarter 2013 underlying profitability for Devices &amp; Services, compared to the fourth quarter 2012.
Nokia also estimates that Nokia Siemens Networks has exceeded expectations for the fourth quarter 2012, delivering record underlying profits and a third consecutive quarter of underlying profitability.
- Strong performance in higher margin product categories and geographic regions; and
- Better than expected cost management.
- Nokia Siemens Networks non-IFRS operating margin for the fourth quarter 2012 now expected to be between 13 and 15 percent.
Seasonality is expected to have a negative impact on the first quarter 2013 underlying profitability for Nokia Siemens Networks, compared to the fourth quarter 2012.
Commenting on the preliminary Q4 financial information, Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO, said:
"We are pleased that Q4 2012 was a solid quarter where we exceeded expectations and delivered underlying profitability in Devices &amp; Services and record underlying profitability in Nokia Siemens Networks. We focused on our priorities and as a result we sold a total of 14 million Asha smartphones and Lumia smartphones while managing our costs efficiently, and Nokia Siemens Networks delivered yet another very good quarter."
Preliminary financial information for the fourth quarter 2012:
Nokia currently estimates that Devices &amp; Services net sales in the fourth quarter 2012 were approximately EUR 3.9 billion, with total device volumes of 86.3 million units.
- Mobile Phones net sales of approximately EUR 2.5 billion, with total volumes of 79.6 million units of which 9.3 million units were Asha full touch smartphones.
- Smart Devices net sales of approximately EUR 1.2 billion, with total volumes of 6.6 million units of which 4.4 million units were Nokia Lumia smartphones.
- Total smartphone volumes of 15.9 million units composed of 9.3 million Asha full touch smartphones, 4.4 million Lumia smartphones and 2.2 million Symbian smartphones.
- Devices &amp; Services Other net sales of approximately EUR 0.2 billion, including a positive impact from non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 50 million.
Nokia currently estimates that Devices &amp; Services non-IFRS operating margin for the fourth quarter 2012 was between break even and positive 2 percent, which compares to the previous outlook of approximately negative 6 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. Devices &amp; Services non-IFRS operating margin includes a positive impact from non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 50 million.
During the fourth quarter 2012, multiple factors positively affected Nokia's Devices &amp; Services businesses to a greater extent than previously expected. Preliminary information indicates that the main factors include:
- Within the Devices &amp; Services business, better than expected financial performance in the Mobile Phones business unit and Lumia smartphones. In addition, Devices &amp; Services recognized non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 50 million; and
- Lower than expected Devices &amp; Services' operating expenses, partially due to greater than expected cost reductions under the restructuring program.
Nokia currently estimates that Location &amp; Commerce net sales in the fourth quarter 2012 were approximately EUR 0.3 billion and the non-IFRS operating margin was between 13 and 15 percent.
Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks currently estimates that Nokia Siemens Networks net sales in the fourth quarter 2012 were approximately EUR 4.0 billion and the non-IFRS operating margin was between 13 and 15 percent, which compares to the previous outlook of approximately positive 8 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. Nokia Siemens Networks non-IFRS operating margin includes a positive impact from non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 30 million.
During the fourth quarter 2012, multiple factors positively affected Nokia Siemens Networks' businesses to a greater extent than previously expected. Preliminary information indicates that the main factors include:
- More favorable product and regional mix in Nokia Siemens Networks. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks recognized non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 30 million; and
- Better than expected improvement under Nokia Siemens Networks' restructuring program to reduce operating expenses and production overheads.
Preliminary outlook for the first quarter 2013:
Nokia expects its non-IFRS Devices &amp; Services operating margin in the first quarter 2013 to be approximately negative 2 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. This outlook is based on Nokia's expectations regarding a number of factors, including:
- competitive industry dynamics continuing to negatively affect the Smart Devices and Mobile Phones business units;
- the first quarter being a seasonally weak quarter;
- consumer demand, particularly for our Lumia and Asha smartphones;
- continued ramp up for our new Lumia smartphones;
- expected cost reductions under Devices &amp; Services' restructuring program; and
- the macroeconomic environment.
Nokia expects Location &amp; Commerce non-IFRS operating margin in the first quarter 2013 to be negative due to lower recognized revenue from internal sales, which carry higher gross margin, and to a lesser extent by a negative mix shift within external sales.
Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks expect Nokia Siemens Networks non-IFRS operating margin in the first quarter 2013 to be approximately positive 3 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. This outlook is based on Nokia Siemens Networks' expectations regarding a number of factors, including:
- competitive industry dynamics;
- the first quarter being a seasonally weak quarter;
- product and regional mix;
- expected continued improvement under Nokia Siemens Networks' restructuring program; and
- the macroeconomic environment.

Nokia Pre-Announces Earnings And The Stock Is Going Nuts

New Delhi, July 6 () Nokia on Monday said its software products are powering Bharti Airtel's Voice over LTE (VoLTE) network in India. As part of its 'cloudification strategy', Airtel will deploy Nokia's CloudBand Infrastructure Software. The network supports over 110 million customers, which makes it "the largest cloud-based VoLTE network in India and the largest Nokia-run VoLTE in the world," a statement by Nokia said. Airtel has deployed India's largest open cloud-based VoLTE network with Nokia software products, the statement said adding the cloud-based VoLTE deployment allows Airtel to provide its mobile customers faster and more reliable, cost-efficient call connectivity. The solution, which will cover all 22 telecom service areas in India, uses commercial 'Off-the-Shelf' IT hardware with cloud-based Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), consuming much less power and space compared to the traditional 2G/3G Circuit Switched legacy core, it said. The solution enables Airtel to free up spectrum by ramping down its 3G network, allowing the operator to use the freed up radiowaves to deploy 4G/LTE services for better speed and capacity. As part of its cloudification strategy, Airtel will also deploy Nokia's CloudBand Infrastructure Software with the aim to create new revenue opportunities for 5G and internet-connected devices, it said. CloudBand will enable Airtel to lay the foundation for 5G networks and deliver new digital services with greater agility and ensure a reliable and high-performing network for delivering improved customer experience. "CloudBand is an open, scalable, flexible platform that will allow Airtel to adapt network capacity in accordance with changing consumption patterns in real-time and in a cost-efficient manner," the statement added. In a bid to strengthen its 4G network and enhance 5G capabilities in India, Bharti Airtel has inked a $1 billion (nearly ₹7,636 crore), multi-year deal with Nokia to deploy the Finnish majors 5G-ready solutions across nine circles in the country. Nokia, which is the largest 4G vendor in Airtel network, will help lay the foundation for providing 5G connectivity in the future by deploying 300,000 radio units across several spectrum bands in those circles expected to be completed by 2022. Reliable industry sources told IANS on Tuesday that the deal size is approximately $1 billion. "We have been working with Nokia for more than a decade now and are delighted to use Nokia's SRAN products in further improving the capacity and coverage of our network as we prepare for the 5G era," Gopal Vittal, MD and CEO (India and South Asia) at Bharti Airtel, said in a statement. Airtel signs ₹7,636 crore deal with Nokia to enhance 4G network, lay foundation for 5G network

New Delhi, Mar 2 () Telecom gear maker Nokia on Monday said its board of directors has appointed Pekka Lundmark as President and CEO to succeed Rajeev Suri. Lundmark is expected to start in his new role on September 1, 2020 and will be based in Espoo, Finland, the company said in a statement. It added that Suri, Nokia's current President and CEO, had indicated to the board earlier that he was considering stepping down from his role at some point in the future, provided a solid succession plan was in place. "Nokia's board of directors has conducted a structured process for CEO succession and has been working closely with Suri to develop internal candidates and identify external candidates. That process culminated today, March 2, 2020," it said. Suri will leave his current position on August 31, 2020, and continue to serve as an advisor to the Nokia board until January 1, 2021, as per the statement. Lundmark is currently President and CEO of Fortum, an energy company based in Espoo, Finland. Prior to Fortum, he has served as President and CEO of Konecranes. Between 1990-2000, Lundmark held multiple executive positions at Nokia, including Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at Nokia Networks. "With the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent behind us and the world of 5G in front of us, I am pleased that Pekka has agreed to join Nokia," Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia board Chairman, said.  With the help of this contract, <keyword id="1486742" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uninor">Uninor</keyword> also intends to make its 4G network available in six circles - Uttar Pradesh East, Uttar Pradesh West, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bihar+">Bihar</a> (including Jharkhand), <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>, Gujarat and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maharashtra">Maharashtra</a>, reported the Economic Times. 
 As per the contract, <keyword id="6357456" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Huawei">Huawei</keyword> would transform around 24,000 sites of Uninor in these six major circles in the country. 
 
So far the telco has been working with Finnish telecom gear maker <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nokia+">Nokia</a> Networks for 2G service deployments in India. <keyword id="2441437" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nokia-Networks">Nokia Networks</keyword> currently deploying networks for Uninor's <keyword id="6354915" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Assam">Assam</keyword> circle, which is likely to start operations anytime this year. 
 
Moreover, the same equipment from Huawei can further transform into 4G networks with some tweaks, once Uninor finalizes its plans to offers 4G services in India, according to the person familiar with the development. 
 
Earlier, Uninor has said that it will introduce more sophisticated services using 4G LTE technology. 
 
Once its permit is converted into a unified licence, Uninor can offer 4G services without buying more spectrum than what it already has in the 1800 MHz band. A unified licence allows airwaves to be used to offer any technology — 2G, 3G or 4G. 
 
Analysts are of the view that the ecosystem for offering 4G over the 1800 MHz band (FDD-LTE), which Uninor has, is far more developed globally than the 2300 MHz band held by some Indian telcos. 
 
Uninor provided services in more than 46 million subscribers using 2G technology in the country. It added 1.3 million subscribers during the second quarter ended June 30, and said the subscription base was 22% higher than the same quarter last year. 
 
The telco said 26% of the customers were active data users, and is targeting 50% Internet customers by 2017. 
 
Uninor recently posted total revenues at NOK 1,362 million (about Rs 1,064.63 crore) for the second quarter, up from NOK 1,021 million (about Rs 798.05 crore) last year. It also narrowed operating loss to NOK 90 million (about Rs 70.30 crore).

Uninor inks a deal with Huawei to expand its network in India

Helsinki, July 11 (IANS) Apple is deploying a new line of Nokia data centre switching products at its Denmark facility to improve its efficiency, the Finnish equipment maker has said. According to Nokia, it has redefined data centre fabrics with the launch of a new and modern Network Operating System (NOS) and a declarative, intent-based automation and operations toolkit. This will allow Cloud and data centre builders to scale and adapt operations in the face of exponential traffic growth and constant change brought on from technology shifts like 5G and Industry 4.0. The new Nokia Service Router Linux (SR Linux) NOS and Nokia Fabric Service Platform (FSP) were co-developed with leading global companies, including Apple. "We regularly upgrade our data center equipment with technology to increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Using Nokia's new system will enable better networking and routing capabilities in our Viborg, Denmark facility," Adam Bechtel, Vice President and Networking lead at Apple, said in a statement. Facing massive growth in demand for cloud-based applications and use of new technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality, today's large and growing community of Cloud builders require new level of customisation and flexibility from networking components to operate and monitor sprawling data centers. Apple deploys new Nokia data centre products in Denmark

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">Spencer Platt/Getty ImagesFormer Nokia CEO Stephen Elop introduces a new phone at an event in New York.</div></div>FRANKFURT/HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finland's Nokia is considering buying U.S.-based Juniper Networks to merge into its telecommunications network gear business, German's Manager MagazinOnline reported, citing unidentified sources.
Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) Chief Executive Rajeev Suri traveled to the United States late last year to discuss with Juniper's management closer cooperation and a possible merger that would strengthen NSN's weak U.S. business, the online magazine said on Thursday.
Juniper has a stock market value of $13.7 billion, making it a major takeover target for Nokia, but Manager Magazin said Nokia could use Juniper's $3.1 billion cash to help finance the purchase.
NSN will be Nokia's primary operation after the sale of its devices and services business to Microsoft in a 5.4 billion euro ($7.4 billion) deal, which is expected to close by the end of next month.
Nokia had indicated it is looking at a number of options as part of its strategic review to be completed in March.
A source familiar with NSN's strategy said no such deal was imminent. Analysts have said, however, that NSN and other smaller network equipment players are likely to pursue M&amp;A because high costs of developing better mobile broadband infrastructure puts players with bigger research and development budgets at an advantage.
NSN and Juniper are already in a partnership to develop and sell network equipment to carriers.
Nokia's former Chief Executive Stephen Elop, who will return to Microsoft after the deal closes, was COO of Juniper for about a year from early 2007.
Raymond James analyst Simon Leopold said a deal with Juniper was unlikely, with a failed joint venture focused on enterprise switching and present partnerships having "not amounted to much."
Nokia would have to offer "at least" 10-20 percent premium to where Juniper's stock is trading now, Needham &amp; Co analyst Alex Henderson said. He added that a deal was unlikely as Nokia lacked the wherewithal and synergies.
Representatives of Nokia, NSN and Juniper declined to comment on the latest report.
Juniper said later in the day it would return a minimum of $3 billion to shareholders over the next three years through a combination of share repurchases and dividends.
The network equipment maker said it would start a quarterly cash dividend of 10 cents per share from the third quarter.
Paul Singer's Elliott Management Corp, which owns a 6.2 percent stake in Juniper, has urged the company to buy back shares, start paying a dividend and consider slimming down.
The hedge fund said the "undervalued" stock could be worth $35-$40 if Juniper implemented its suggestions and focused on revamping its core business of making routers and switches for mobile carriers such as Verizon Communications Inc and AT&amp;T Inc.
Last week, hedge fund Jana Partners disclosed a 2.65 percent stake in Juniper to push the company to cut costs.
"We suspect a merger with Nokia would satisfy the activists if Nokia paid a material premium to Juniper's current $27.20 per share, perhaps valuing Juniper over $35 per share, or a market cap above $17.5 billion," Raymond James' Leopold said.
After years of concentrating on cutting costs, NSN has said it is now focusing on expanding the business and competing more aggressively against industry leader Ericsson and China's Huawei.
Other sources have said Nokia has considered a tie-up between NSN and French rival Alcatel-Lucent. [ID:nL2N0HG284] Suri has not ruled out acquisitions but has also said the company could grow on its own.
Juniper's shares closed marginally up at $27.41 on the New York Stock Exchange. They rose to a high of $28.38 earlier in the day.

Nokia spikes 15% after growth in its 5G business helps drive earnings past analysts' estimates

Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia on Tuesday announced a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru to establish a network robotics laboratory for research on socially relevant use cases based on 5G and emerging technologies. The Nokia Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Networked Robotics will promote interdisciplinary research involving robotics, advanced communication technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop use cases across areas like emergency management, agriculture and industrial automation, the company said. The centre will promote engagement and cooperation between academia, start-ups and industry ecosystem partners in research and development of use cases. The centre supports and aligns with the government's initiatives of Start-up India. The Nokia CoE will be available to the IISc community and its ecosystem partners for advanced research projects involving designing next-generation networks and applications of Artificial Intelligence for solving pertinent social problems. "Collaboration with a global technology leader, Nokia, will go a long way in helping our students to gain knowledge and insights and make significant contributions to the development of innovative and societally relevant <keyword id="7030079" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g-use-cases">5G use cases</keyword>," Professor G Rangarajan, Director, IISc, said in a statement.
