<p>The 10.1-inch tablet runs <keyword id="1016196" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Windows-RT">Windows RT</keyword> 8.1, a special version of <keyword id="656949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Windows-8">Windows 8</keyword> that's only designed to run on tablets and compete with Google's Android and Apple's iOS.</p>
<p>Unlike tablets that have the full version of Windows 8, the Lumia 2520 will only be able to run apps optimized for the new operating system. You won't be able to run older apps designed for Windows 7 or earlier.</p>
<p>The Lumia 2520 is an interesting product, not because it's the first Windows tablet from Nokia, but because it competes with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-surface-2-photos-2013-9">Microsoft's own Surface 2 tablet</a>, which just went on sale this month. <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> is in the process of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-buys-nokia-devices-2013-9">buying Nokia's mobile device business for about $7 billion</a>. If and when the sale goes through, Microsoft will be selling two different tablets that essentially compete with each other.</p>
<p>Just like the Surface 2, the Lumia 2520 has an optional snap-on keyboard cover accessory. The keyboard cover also has a built in battery, which will give you an extra five hours of juice.</p>
<p>But unlike the Surface tablets, Nokia's Lumia 2520 can connect to the Internet using a 4G LTE connection from your wireless carrier. Nokia has not announced what carriers will support the tablet though.</p>
<p>There's more. The Lumia 2520's screen can play full 1080p HD video and is designed to work well even in direct sunlight. It also has a 6.7 MP camera on the back for snapping photos and a 2 MP HD camera on the front for video chats. It'll come in three color options: red, white, blue, or black. It'll ship with Microsoft Office preinstalled.</p>
<p>Nokia did not say when the tablet will launch nor how much it will cost. Expect that information to come along in a few weeks.</p>

Nokia Unveils Its First Ever Windows Tablet, The Lumia 2520

If you believe Nokia's new advertisement for its <keyword id="656949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Windows-8">Windows 8</keyword> tablet, the <keyword id="1901021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nokia-Lumia-2520">Nokia Lumia 2520</keyword>, the answer is: No.</p>
<p>The new Lumia 2520, released in late October, looks a lot like a Microsoft Surface PC. That's to be expected since Microsoft is in the process of buying Nokia's device business. (Shareholders <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/19/us-nokia-microsoft-idUSBRE9AI00320131119">formally agreed to the $7.4 billion deal earlier this month</a>.)</p>
<p>Like Microsoft's ads, this Nokia ad tries to make you believe that not having a keyboard, particularly the Nokia Power keyboard which can charge the device, is a terrible thing.</p>
<p>Like a Surface, the Nokia tablet comes with a combo cover/keyboard, however, the Power Keyboard is an optional accessory that costs $149. You can get it for <a href="http://www.tabletkeyboardoffer.com/form/">free through the holiday season, with a mail-in rebate.</a> But we'll point out that if you want to buy an optional keyboard case, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2013/11/23/ipad-air-keyboard-smackdown-latest-cases-from-logitech-belkin-and-zagg/">you can get one for the iPad, too.</a></p>
<p>So the bigger question is, which will make you look cool in the eyes of the opposite sex?</p>

Nokia's New Windows Tablet Ad Picks On The iPad Air

<p><a href="http://www.nokia.com/us-en/">Nokia</a> just released a new tablet called the <a href="http://www.nokia.com/us-en/phones/phone/lumia1520/">Lumia 2520</a> and it thinks it's better than the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9gLqh8tmPA">iPad Air</a>.</p>
<p>In a new commercial, the smartphone and tablet maker mocks the most recent promo for the <keyword id="1613785" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ipad-air">iPad Air</keyword> where the <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> created object is called "lighter than air."</p>
<p>Throughout this video, the actors criticize the various features found on Apple's tablet. </p>

Nokia Is Trying To Sell Its New Tablet By Making Fun Of The iPad

<p>Earlier this week, Nokia posted <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-lumia-tablet-ad-2013-12" target="_blank">a super-creepy commercial</a> for its new Windows 8 tablet, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-2520-review-2013-11" target="_blank">Lumia 2520</a>. </p>
<p>Today, the company released another ad, one that completely shifts gears and takes viewers out of the creepy barbershop and into a park where a puppy keeps getting ignored by kids who have their noses glued to their devices. All the children are sitting in the shade, but the kid with the Lumia 2520 can sit in the sun because of its great outdoor readability, and, thus, play with the dog. He also gets everyone to ditch their tech and eat pizza together.  </p>
<p>This ad is a thousand times less abrasive than the previous one, but it's interesting that the company is marketing the device so disjointedly. Is Nokia flailing to find a marketing strategy that works?</p>

Nokia Has Another Bizarre Commercial For Its New Windows Tablet

<p>Nokia released a new commercial for its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-2520-review-2013-11" target="_blank">Lumia 2520 Windows-running tablet</a>, and watching it will make you feel uncomfortable. </p>
<p>In the ad, Nokia is marketing its new device as the mullet of tablets. Just like the 90s haircut championed the attitude of "business in the front, party in the back," the Lumia is optimized for both work and play.</p>
<p>Regardless of the merit of that idea, Nokia makes its ad over-the-top bizarre by featuring a weirdo barbershop and horror-movie music.</p>

Nokia's Ad For Its New Windows 8 Tablet Is Truly Creepy And Weird

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Lumia 2520 goes on sale in the U.S. this week for about $400 on contract with Verizon and AT&amp;T (though it's only $200 if you also buy a Nokia Lumia smartphone, like the recently released </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-lumia-1520-review-2013-11" target="_blank">1520 phablet</a>)<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It comes in black or white, as well as the snappier options of red or cyan.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Lumia 2520 is a Windows tablet, just like Microsoft's new Surface 2. That means it runs the latest version of Windows, called <keyword id="1673985" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Windows-8-1">Windows 8.1</keyword>. As a bonus, it also comes with the full version of Microsoft Office for free.</span></p>
<h2>The Basics</h2>
<p>The 10-inch Lumia 2520 weighs 1.35 pounds, which is roughly the same weight as the slightly smaller iPad 2 and less than the slightly larger, <span>1.49 pound Surface 2</span>. Apple's new iPad Air weighs one pound.</p>
<p>As far as looks, I dug the bright red plastic backing and it felt pretty durable, though it would flex a little if you pulled at it, which its metal counterparts wouldn't do. </p>
<p>One of the Nokia Lumia's bragging points is that the display is crisp and bright with great viewing range both outdoors and indoors. Indeed, the screen looked great from every angle, even when I was looking at it almost vertically from above. </p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The keyboard was really accurate and easy to use-perfect for bursting out emails-but you wouldn't want to type out long Word documents on it. Nokia is selling a Power Keyboard, which adds five extra hours of battery life, for $150. For comparison, the Surface 2 offers two keyboard options at $80 and $130, but neither will provide the extra juice. I didn't get to test the keyboard, but it seems like it would be a no-brainer accessory if you're actually planning on getting work done on your tablet.</span></p>
<h2><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Using It</span></h2>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As a Windows 8.1 device, the Lumia 2520 has its ups and downs. You can multi-task to your hearts content and move through different apps with ease, but it's a little rattling to jump back-and-forth between the sleek tiles menu and the classic-looking desktop mode. You don't have as many app options and Bing and Internet Explorer are your default browsing options. In general, the <keyword id="52147" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="reviews">reviews</keyword> of Windows 8.1 have been mixed and to a certain point it's a matter of preference. Do you like using your tablet like a PC? Do you care about having access to the latest, greatest apps? Windows still doesn't seem to be high on an app developers' priority lists, though, to be fair, that is starting to change as more name-brand apps finally <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-for-windows-phone-2013-11" target="_blank">launch their Windows equivalents</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Nokia's Lumia tablet, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-lumia-1520-review-2013-11" target="_blank">like the company's new big-screen phablet</a>, comes with commercial-free Pandora copycat Nokia Music, which is amazing, and photo sharing app Nokia Storyteller, which is well-designed but debatably useful unless you like to brag about your vacations. It also comes with Nokia Video Director, which lets you stitch videos together and add affects and titles. It takes a while to create previews for each video (which I had to do often when trying out the different affects), but it's a nice, free tool if you want to jazz up the footage you shoot with the 6.7 megapixel camera. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Nokia's testing showed the battery to last more than 10 hours while streaming video over Wi-Fi. I would say that the battery lasted more than a day with light use. </span></p>

<p><span>Should you buy this tablet?</span></p>
<p>Let's compare options. The 16GB iPad 2 costs $529 for Wi-Fi plus LTE, while the <span>32GB Lumia 2520 costs only $400 with Verizon or AT&amp;T.</span> That's a significant price difference, especially when take into account that you're also getting the Microsoft Office bundle for free. However, buying into Windows means you have to be prepared for slower app adoption than you'd have with an iOS or Android device. </p>
<p>If you're a Windows fan who wants to be able to use Microsoft Office though, you might be torn between this tablet or the Surface 2. The Lumia is cheaper than the Surface and comes with some neat Nokia-specific add-on apps and the battery-charged keyboard accessory, so I'd go with the Lumia. </p>
<p>In general, it's interesting that one of the Lumia 2520's biggest competitors is the $449 Microsoft <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/surface-2-review-2013-10" target="_blank">Surface 2 tablet</a>. Afterall, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-buys-nokia-devices-2013-9" target="_blank">Microsoft bought Nokia's smartphone and tablet business</a> earlier this year. <p>The information supposedly comes from a reliable source, but Myce couldn't confirm whether this would apply to all Windows RT tablets or just certain models. </p>
<p>Currently, Windows 8.1 RT tablets come with the Live Tile-filled home screen and the desktop, which you can switch back and forth between interchangeably. <span>But this may not be the case with future Windows RT tablets.</span></p>
<p>Windows 8.1 RT is distinctly different from Windows 8.1. The former is a lighter version of Windows meant for tablets; the latter is the full version of Windows 8.1. You wouldn't be able to notice the difference by simply looking at the two types of software, but Windows 8.1 RT is much more limited.</p>
<p>Windows 8.1 is designed to run types of software and games meant for PCs, while Windows 8.1 RT can only run apps from the Windows Store. That's because Windows RT devices run on processors meant for tablets, not full-fledged computers, which means they cost less than your average Windows laptop and are optimized for longer battery life.</p>
<p>It's also worth noting that there are barely any Windows tablets running on Windows RT. Nokia's Lumia 2520 tablet and Microsoft's line of Surface tablets are the only ones running on RT rather than full Windows. </p>
<p>If true, this is just one of the several changes expected to come to the Windows platform in the future. With Windows 9, Microsoft is expected to introduce a new Start menu, allow "Metro"-style apps to run on the desktop, and much more.</p>
<p>Microsoft may also debut a subscription-type model for Windows, which Myce said its sources have also confirmed. Ars Technica's Peter Bright <a href="http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/04/the-inevitable-arrival-of-subscription-based-windows/">previously reported this feature</a>, which would enable users to pay for extra features. </p>

Microsoft May Ax The Desktop From Some Future Windows Tablets

Previously, Microsoft Surface Pro models ran regular Windows while the standard Surfaces were stuck with RT.</p><p>The announcement comes just days after blog WinBeta <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-is-fixing-its-surface-tablet-2015-3">reported that Microsoft</a> was working on a new Surface tablet that would run full Windows rather than RT.</p><p>Microsoft is also calling the Surface 3 it's thinnest tablet yet, and it comes with a one-year subscription to Office 365. </p><p>Like the Surface Pro 3, the new Surface 3 comes with Microsoft's stylus and an integrated kickstand. It has a smaller screen than the Pro model (10.8 inches vs. 12 inches) and isn't quite as powerful. The base model comes wth 64GB of storage and the more expensive version includes 128GB. </p><p>The most important detail, however, seems to be that Microsoft has finally killed off Windows RT. Until this point, Microsoft's Surface and Nokia's Lumia 2520 were the only two tablets to run on Windows RT. It's a smart move on Microsoft's part - when Windows 8 initially launched, there was a lot of confusion around Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT. <p><strong><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/22/apple-announces-170m-ipads-sold-with-81-tablet-usage-share-and-475k-apps/">Apple Announces 170 Million iPads Sold</a> (TechCrunch)</strong><br />Apple's event in San Francisco showcased a flurry of updated Apple products, including refreshes to both the larger <keyword id="101239" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPad">iPad</keyword> and the <keyword id="6617405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPad-mini">iPad Mini</keyword>.</p>
<p>When discussing the iPad business in general, CEO Tim Cook claimed Apple had sold its 170 millionth iPad in September.</p>
<p>A quick calculation of that figure against our cumulative iPad sales data through the second quarter reveals that Apple likely sold just under 15 million iPads during the third quarter. That would equate to roughly 6% year-over-year growth and minimal growth sequentially. </p>
<p>This third quarter performance is somewhat expected, given that there has not been an updated iPad release since last November, but 6% growth is not something to brag about in the rapidly growing tablet market.
