The super-large Lumia <keyword id="999344" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="phablet">phablet</keyword> (yup, that's the lingo for those part phone, part tablet giants) is .3 inches larger than its competitor, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/galaxy-note-3-review-2013-9" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Note 3</a>.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's also the first phablet powered by <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>'s <keyword id="1108105" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Windows-Phone-8">Windows Phone 8</keyword> <keyword id="6354485" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="mobile">mobile</keyword> operating system.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><span><span id="docs-internal-guid-43df760c-6b52-8df4-75d1-7df4f310c5f7"><span></span><span>The Lumia 1520 goes on sale in the U.S. this week for about $200 on contract with AT&amp;T. It comes in black, white, yellow, and red. </span></span><br /></span></p>
<h2 dir="ltr"><span>Size-Wise</span></h2>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Lumia is large and in charge. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I don't consider myself a super small-handed person, but holding onto this behemoth took some getting used to. If you're thinking about buying this (or any) phablet, I strongly suggest trying it out in the store first to make sure you actually dig its proportions.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The joy of a phablet though is the big, beautiful screen. The Lumia's 6-inch HD display looks stunning and is perfect if you plan on playing a lot of games or watching videos or shows. I tried out "Halo: Spartan Assault" and couldn't believe how amazing the graphics looked. Ditto for videos on Vimeo and Netflix. Plus, the phablet runs on a zippy quad-core processor, which means it runs fast and I could multitask like crazy. </span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Another great perk of its giant-status is that the battery lasts much longer than it does on smaller phones. I got more than a day's use out of it, compared to my usual schedule of charging overnight and hoping that my phone will last if I go out after work. </span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-43df760c-6b13-9ee5-8b2f-60a7055a2e59"><span>Plus, the huge screen means that the keyboard is great for jotting out emails or, if you're the kind of person planning to use Microsoft Office on their phone, Word documents.</span></span></p>
<h2 dir="ltr"><span>Using It</span></h2>
<p dir="ltr"><span>The Lumia 1520 runs Microsoft Windows Phone OS, with all that entails. I'm still getting used to the customizable Live Tiles format and it took me a while to switch out all the pre-loaded apps (like AT&amp;T's branded TV streaming app) for the ones that I actually wanted to use.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>The phablet did come pre-loaded with some cool apps though. I quickly fell in love with Nokia Music, the built in Pandora-esque radio app on the Lumia. I could create amazing mixes-without commercials-for free that managed to stick to my music tastes way better than the real Pandora ever does.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>It also comes with the Storyteller app that lets you pull all your pictures into a clean, pretty interface and display albums or events on a map so you can virtually walk someone through your vacation, for example. It's definitely cool, though I question how much I'd actually use it, as opposed to just throwing all my pictures up on Facebook. (I'm in my early 20s and at times I got the feeling that this phone was geared towards an older audience. This app would work better for my mom to brag about our family vacation to a relative than it would be for me to share my experience with a friend. Plus in the "Helps and Tips" section, I was recommended "all the apps to keep you (and your kids) busy.")</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>Of course, one of the biggest selling points of the Lumia is the camera, which runs with Nokia's new-and-improved camera app. With 20 MP (for comparison, the new iPhone 5S has a 8 MP camera), the Lumia takes great shots, even in low light, and if you want to shoot video, you'll appreciate the four microphones, which capture audio crisply no matter which angle it's coming from.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-43df760c-6b4b-717b-e2ee-4ff9da5ba2e0"><span></span><span>I absolutely loved the amazing camera experience, but I have to admit that the size of the phone was an issue for me here. I mean, it takes great pictures, but it's way larger than my old digital camera. When I went to a show the other night without a purse, I just couldn't bring it. </span></span></p>
<h2 dir="ltr"><span>Conclusion</span></h2>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The giant Lumia 1520 phablet isn't for everyone, obviously. It's not the kind of thing that you buy to use simply for texting because it can't fit into your pants pocket (and hogs space in a small clutch). And it's not for someone who cares about having access to the latest apps. As a regular Android phone user, I'm occasionally annoyed when I find an app that's only for iPhone. I can't imagine being a Windows Phone user and having that happen even more often, with more popular apps. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The good news is, Windows Phone is finally getting some apps users have been craving for like Instagram and Flipboard. Twitter recently released its video app Vine for Windows Phone too.</span></p>
<p><span id="docs-internal-guid-43df760c-6af3-805c-c9c6-9e7f1b294040"><span>If you prioritize great graphics on your X-Box Live games, getting work done with the Office Suite, or sharing high-quality photos and videos of your family vacation, then the Lumia 1520 will look pretty good with its giant screen and $100 off the price of the Samsung's Galaxy Note 3. </span></span></p>

<p>Other than that, there aren't many surprises. The Lumia 1520 can do just about everything else other Windows Phone 8 devices can do. It just gives you a bigger screen to do it all on.</p>

<p>A few gadget writers have reported on the 1520 before, but this is the first time we've actually seen it. Nokia is expected to formally announce the phone later this month. It's said to have a 6-inch screen that can play HD video. <p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Lumia 2520 goes on sale in the U.S. this week for about $400 on contract with Verizon and AT&amp;T (though it's only $200 if you also buy a Nokia Lumia smartphone, like the recently released </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-lumia-1520-review-2013-11" target="_blank">1520 phablet</a>)<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It comes in black or white, as well as the snappier options of red or cyan.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Lumia 2520 is a Windows tablet, just like Microsoft's new Surface 2. That means it runs the latest version of Windows, called <keyword id="1673985" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Windows-8-1">Windows 8.1</keyword>. As a bonus, it also comes with the full version of Microsoft Office for free.</span></p>
<h2>The Basics</h2>
<p>The 10-inch Lumia 2520 weighs 1.35 pounds, which is roughly the same weight as the slightly smaller iPad 2 and less than the slightly larger, <span>1.49 pound Surface 2</span>. Apple's new iPad Air weighs one pound.</p>
<p>As far as looks, I dug the bright red plastic backing and it felt pretty durable, though it would flex a little if you pulled at it, which its metal counterparts wouldn't do. </p>
<p>One of the Nokia Lumia's bragging points is that the display is crisp and bright with great viewing range both outdoors and indoors. Indeed, the screen looked great from every angle, even when I was looking at it almost vertically from above. </p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The keyboard was really accurate and easy to use-perfect for bursting out emails-but you wouldn't want to type out long Word documents on it. Nokia is selling a Power Keyboard, which adds five extra hours of battery life, for $150. For comparison, the Surface 2 offers two keyboard options at $80 and $130, but neither will provide the extra juice. I didn't get to test the keyboard, but it seems like it would be a no-brainer accessory if you're actually planning on getting work done on your tablet.</span></p>
<h2><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Using It</span></h2>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As a Windows 8.1 device, the Lumia 2520 has its ups and downs. You can multi-task to your hearts content and move through different apps with ease, but it's a little rattling to jump back-and-forth between the sleek tiles menu and the classic-looking desktop mode. You don't have as many app options and Bing and Internet Explorer are your default browsing options. In general, the <keyword id="52147" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="reviews">reviews</keyword> of Windows 8.1 have been mixed and to a certain point it's a matter of preference. Do you like using your tablet like a PC? Do you care about having access to the latest, greatest apps? Windows still doesn't seem to be high on an app developers' priority lists, though, to be fair, that is starting to change as more name-brand apps finally <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-for-windows-phone-2013-11" target="_blank">launch their Windows equivalents</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Nokia's Lumia tablet, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-lumia-1520-review-2013-11" target="_blank">like the company's new big-screen phablet</a>, comes with commercial-free Pandora copycat Nokia Music, which is amazing, and photo sharing app Nokia Storyteller, which is well-designed but debatably useful unless you like to brag about your vacations. It also comes with Nokia Video Director, which lets you stitch videos together and add affects and titles. It takes a while to create previews for each video (which I had to do often when trying out the different affects), but it's a nice, free tool if you want to jazz up the footage you shoot with the 6.7 megapixel camera. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Nokia's testing showed the battery to last more than 10 hours while streaming video over Wi-Fi. I would say that the battery lasted more than a day with light use. </span></p>

<p>Let's compare options. The 16GB iPad 2 costs $529 for Wi-Fi plus LTE, while the <span>32GB Lumia 2520 costs only $400 with Verizon or AT&amp;T.</span> That's a significant price difference, especially when take into account that you're also getting the Microsoft Office bundle for free. However, buying into Windows means you have to be prepared for slower app adoption than you'd have with an iOS or Android device. </p>
<p>If you're a Windows fan who wants to be able to use Microsoft Office though, you might be torn between this tablet or the Surface 2. The Lumia is cheaper than the Surface and comes with some neat Nokia-specific add-on apps and the battery-charged keyboard accessory, so I'd go with the Lumia. </p>
<p>In general, it's interesting that one of the Lumia 2520's biggest competitors is the $449 Microsoft <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/surface-2-review-2013-10" target="_blank">Surface 2 tablet</a>. Afterall, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-buys-nokia-devices-2013-9" target="_blank">Microsoft bought Nokia's smartphone and tablet business</a> earlier this year. None of these phones went on to be commercial best sellers, and&#xa0;the HTC First <a href="http://bgr.com/2013/05/13/htc-first-discontinued-att-facebook-phone/">reportedly sold</a>&#xa0;just 15,000 units. Keeping the 950 an AT&amp;T exclusive was <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/2990144/phones/att-exclusivity-would-be-a-disaster-for-the-lumia-950-the-first-windows-10-phone.html">described by PC World</a> as a "disaster."&#xa0;</p><p>Even the iPhone, which was sold exclusively in the US by AT&amp;T until 2011, <a href="http://www.statista.com/statistics/263401/global-apple-iphone-sales-since-3rd-quarter-2007/">became the success it is today</a> when Apple decided to open it up to all carriers at launch.</p><p>By making the 950 a carrier exclusive, Microsoft is hampering the success of the phone. Users who may have bought the devices but are on Verizon - a network with around <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verizon_Wireless">135 million customers</a>&#xa0;in the US&#xa0;- or T-Mobile - which has around <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile#United_States">60 million customers</a> - cannot easily access the 950, and will likely continue using an iPhone or Android device.&#xa0;</p><p>T-Mobile CEO&#xa0;John Legere took to Twitter to <a href="https://twitter.com/JohnLegere/status/651880503570747396?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">describe the decision</a> as "total b******t" encouraging Microsoft to "wake up."&#xa0;</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">The two phones will be sold unlocked via Microsoft's online store, but this is unlikely to boost sales to any great extent. Microsoft's mobile offerings already <a href="https://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=8&amp;qpcustomd=1">struggle enough with marketshare</a> and the company limiting the potential customer base is unlikely to help this.&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer"><em>Business Insider has reached out to Microsoft to ask about the exclusivity deal and how it will affect sales of the handset. Amazon Proves There's Still Plenty Of Room For Tablet Innovation With Mayday

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>LG just announced its new Android phone, the LG G4, and the company claims its screen is even sharper and more colorful than that of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the iPhone 6.</p><p>The phone, which launches on Wednesday in Korea, will be coming to other markets such as the United States near the end of May or early June.</p><p>LG says the 5.5-inch screen on the G4 is DCI compliant, which means it meets the same set of standards and specifications that companies like Disney, Fox, and Paramount follow in digital cinema.</p><p>This also means the color reproduction is about 20% better than that of the G3, according to LG. The company claims that the screen on Samsung's Galaxy S6 isn't as accurate in this sense because it over saturates colors.</p><p>Here's a look at how a photo of red strawberries looks on the LG G4 compared to the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6.</p><p>You can tell that the reds look deeper and more rich on the G4, but it's also important to keep in mind that this comparison was set up by LG. <span>That means I have no idea whether or not the screen settings or camera settings were tweaked at all to somehow make the reds look better on LG's phone. Regardless, based on this test alone, the screen on the G4 certainly looks impressive. </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>LG is promoting the G4's camera as ideal for photographers, too. There's a manual mode that lets anyone who knows a bit about photography have more control over the camera's settings. You can tweak the white balance, ISO, and exposure value among other elements when shooting in manual mode. There's also a Simple Mode for those looking to use it like a basic point-and-shoot camera. </p><p>The company also claims it's made some improvements to the optical image stabilization in the camera, which prevents any blur from appearing in photos if your hands shake. There's a 16-megapixel sensor on the main camera, which on paper is the same as the Galaxy S6, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.</p><p>That's an unusually large sensor for a front-facing camera, or selfie camera as some companies have called it. The iPhone 6's main camera, for example, is 8-megapixels while its front-facing FaceTime camera is just 1.2-megapixels.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Another nice bonus for photographers - you can shoot in RAW mode on the LG G4, too, which is rare for most smartphones. This essentially means photographers can see what an image looks like before the camera processes it and changes it to a JPEG.</p><p>It's a new feature to come with Android 5.0 Lollipop, but not many handset manufacturers have taken advantage of it yet. It's not common for smartphones to be able to shoot in RAW - Nokia's Lumia 1520 and 1020 are among the only other phones that can do this. </p><p>You'll have two new options in terms of design for the G4 - the company's new leather back or the so-called Hammer pattern. This Hammer pattern (shown above) is the same plastic back that the one of the LG3, but it's been painted to look like metal or ceramic. LG is really playing up its leather back though, saying that it took three months to make and that it's resistant to water stains, abrasion, and scratches. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Some other core details: the phone will include 32GB of storage expandable to 128GB, it supports wireless charging, runs on a Snapdragon 808 processor made by Qualcomm, comes with 3GB of memory, and the 3,000 mAh battery is removeable. </p><p>The phone is about the same size as the iPhone 6 Plus. And, while some Android fans will definitely appreciate the ability to swap out the battery and change the back cover, it just doesn't have the elegant, premium feel of the aluminum iPhone 6 and glass Galaxy S6. The screen is really nice, but I don't know if the difference in quality is noticeable enough to compel someone to buy it over Apple or Samsung's phones.</p><p>The real question will be how long the battery lasts.
