Labour union representatives of the Nokia factory near Chennai met Union <keyword id="91" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commerce-Minister">Commerce Minister</keyword> <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, urging her to ensure that the factory doesn’t shut down. 
 
They even suggested that the government should take over the plant, if nothing else materialises. Sitharaman assured that she would take up the matter with the Finance Ministry. Nokia has announced to suspend operations at that factory from November 1. 
 A Soundararajan, MLA and head of the <keyword id="2565701" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nokia-India-Workers-Union">Nokia India Workers Union</keyword>, said they had also met the industries and labour minister of Tamil Nadu. 
 
Around 6,000 jobs are at stake due to the closure.

Nearly 2,000 employees of <keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword> India's Chennai facility have accepted the company’s voluntary retirement scheme (<keyword id="6362193" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="VRS">VRS</keyword>), even as many of them are seeking help from the government in a bid to save their jobs. 
 
Senior members of the factory's labour union told Economic Times that the ‘apathy’ of the authorities forced many employees to choose the voluntary retirement scheme. However, the precise number of these employees could not be immediately ascertained. 
 
"Since nobody has offered us any help, what assurance can we give to our employees and on what basis can we ask them not to accept the VRS?" asked a senior union member, requesting anonymity. "We are still trying to get some help, some support, but nobody seems to care," he added. 
 Earlier, the company’s Chennai plant marked India’s significance as a key market and manufacturing hub for Nokia, which was once the world's largest handset-maker before being overtaken by stalwarts like <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword>. 
 
Due to tax disputes, the Chennai facility was left out of a global Microsoft takeover of Nokia's devices and services units. The unit has about 7,000 workers and the majority of them are women. Nokia India announced the voluntary retirement scheme last month in order to curtail its operations. "All we can share right now is that the VRS package is being offered till May 14," a Nokia spokesperson said in a statement. 
 
Nokia India has been urging its employees to take up the VRS offer, hinting that they may not be entitled to any other compensation once the offer is closed, senior members of the union said. According to them, the company has informed that it has orders for just 1.5 million handsets, which will require only about 1,300 employees. 
 
"The management has conveyed to the employees that there is no future for this facility anymore," another source added.

Taiwanese electronics maker <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Foxconn+">Foxconn</a> is facing a tough time in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tamil+Nadu">Tamil Nadu</a>, where it had closed its unit over a quarter ago. Around 490 of its ex-workers, who already received severance pay and benefits in February, want their jobs back. 
 The disgruntled former employees filed a petition with the <keyword id="4032883" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="assistant-labour-commissioner">assistant labour commissioner</keyword> of <keyword id="2638390" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sriperambudur">Sriperambudur</keyword> district over a month ago. There have since been four conciliation meetings. 
 <keyword id="6354671" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword>, which recently announced plans to set up a manufacturing facility in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Andhra+Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</a>, has submitted it is legally not tenable to raise disputes after a formal settlement was worked out. 
 
"A settlement for severance was concluded with employee representatives on February 12, 2015," Foxconn earlier said in a statement. 
 
According to people familiar with the mater, an average sum of Rs 3.26 lakh was fixed as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=compensation">compensation</a>. While many of the company's 1,306 employees accepted the money electronically sent to their salary accounts, hundreds had stuck to their demand for re-employment. 
 
"We still have hope as the Centre is said to be taking steps to revive the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nokia+">Nokia</a> factory. If a phone manufacturer enters <keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword> SEZ, there are chances Foxconn might come back," said S Kannan, a trade unionist with CITU, which is supporting the former Foxconn employees. 
 
K Rajini, who heads Foxconn India Employees Union, said there was pressure from banks to get salary accounts converted into personal accounts after Foxconn completed severance procedures.

Not satisfied with severance pay, Foxconn ex-staff want their jobs back

CHENNAI: <keyword id="107835" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nokia-India">Nokia India</keyword>, which is fighting several tax demands, fell into further turmoil after the head of its Chennai factory quit and workers alleged that they were being forced to take up an early retirement scheme. 
 
The mobile device maker, which is in trouble with taxmen over dues for royalty payments made to its parent company in Finland and allegations that it classified domestically sold units as exports, had offered a voluntary retirement scheme to its nearly 7,000 employees. 
 
“We can confirm that Prakash Katama (the factory head) is leaving the company, but will stay with us in a consultancy role for a fixed period of time,” a company spokeswoman told ET. Katama will be replaced by V Sembian, the head of product and process engineering at the unit, effective immediately, she said. 
 
Katama was appointed as the director of Nokia's Chennai facility in 2010. 
 
The company’s case against the Tamil Nadu government, which claimed that Nokia India owes it Rs 2,400 crore in taxes, came up for hearing in the Madras High Court on Tuesday. While Nokia’s counsel Arvind P Datar presented his arguments, the government counsel is likely to present his on Wednesday. 
 
Nokia, whose devices and services unit is being bought by Microsoft, is already fighting a Rs 21,000-crore claim by the income tax department over royalty payments. 
 
On Tuesday, employees at Nokia India’s facility near Chennai alleged company officials were forcing them to opt for the early retirement scheme offered last week. Nokia India’s VRS scheme comes into effect from Tuesday and is open till May 14. 
 
“They (the management) urged the employees to take up the VRS saying they would cut down transportation facilities to 40 km from 80 km,” said an employee, who did not wish to be identified. “They said they have received instructions from Finland (the parent company) to cut down the overall costs.” 
 
Nokia India provides transportation facilities to its nearly 7,000 workers, most of who are from small towns and villages near Chennai. 
 
The company denied forcing its employees. “We would like to clarify that we haven’t stopped bus or canteen facilities for our employees at Chennai factory,” the spokeswoman said. “Also, the voluntary retirement scheme is ‘voluntary’ for all factory employees.” 
 
Sources said the company has made two offers: one for permanent employees and the other for its nearly 700 trainees. Over 200 trainees have opted for the offer which will give them Rs 2 lakh as well as double the salary for the number of earned leaves, they added. 
 
“I think all the trainees will opt for this offer as they have no other choice,” said a source close to the developments at Nokia India’s factory who did not want to be identified.

While it's not unusual for companies to offer employees some sort of package to volunteer for a layoff, this prize is little unusual. This is the low-end affordable phone that sells for about $130 (800 yuan). The high-end Nokia phone is the Lumia 930 and that's <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/4/5956419/nokia-lumia-930-lumia-630-review">the one with the to-die-for camera.</a>
Microsoft is reportedly giving away up to 300 Nokia 630 Lumia phones a day, first come first served, to those who offer to quit.
The cuts are part of Microsoft's <a href="sells%20for%20about%20$130%20(800%20yuan)">unprecedented 18,000-employee layoff, mostly from Nokia</a>. The company is cutting about 4,700 Nokia jobs in China, leaving only about 300 Chinese Nokia workers on the payroll, <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/microsofts-nokia-employees-protest-in-beijing-against-layoffs-2014-08-03">Marketwatch had previously reported.</a>
The cuts sparked some protests from workers in <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/microsofts-nokia-employees-protest-in-beijing-against-layoffs-2014-08-03">China earlier this week.</a>
We understand from a source <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-employees-still-like-nadella-2014-7">that most of the Nokia cuts are coming from the feature phone side of the house</a>, as Microsoft has no interest in keeping Nokia's non-Windows Phone business. And its Chinese facilities are some of the oldest in Nokia's fleet, <a href="http://www.nokia.com/global/about-us/people-and-planet/operations/production-facilities/production-facilities/">according to Nokia. </a>
So we're not clear that these people are the ones actually building this phone, then being offered one as a prize to leave their jobs. But as <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/6/5974793/microsoft-offers-its-chinese-factory-workers-a-lumia-630-to-quit">The Verge's Tom Warren points out</a>, it seems like it.

New Delhi, June 10 () Coal India trade unions on Wednesday held a peaceful protest while adhering to coronavirus-related safety guidelines to oppose the government's "wrong policies", the Hind Khadan Mazdoor Federation, affiliated to the Hind Mazdoor Sabha, said. "The central trade unions namely Hind Mazdoor Sabha, AITUC, INTUC...(held) dharna, procession today," Nathulal Pandey, president of the Hind Khadan Mazdoor Federation, said. The trade unions, he said, peacefully lodged their protest awakening the coal workers about the wrong policies of the central government like commercial mining, amendment of labour laws, weakening the rights of workers and separation of consultancy arm the Central Mines Planning and Design Institute Ltd (CMPDIL) from Coal India. Pandey, however, expressed hopes that the government will withdraw all the wrong decisions taken against Coal India as well as workers. As per various reports coming from different parts of the country, coal sector workers started dharna or agitation peacefully by following the guidelines of state/Centre due to COVID-19, like adhering to social distancing norms and wearing masks, he said. Mobile handset manufacturing giant <keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword>, which has extensive India business, has alleged that India's tax claims against the Finnish firm’s subsidiaries don't comply with its bilateral pact with <keyword id="6374076" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Finland">Finland</keyword> and has threatened to file an international arbitration in case the issue is not settled amicably. 
 “India's decision to change tax laws with retrospective effect and substantial tax claims against Nokia subsidiaries don't comply with its obligations under the <keyword id="2241526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Finland-Bilateral-Investment-Treaty">India-Finland Bilateral Investment Treaty</keyword> (BIT), and hurt the Helsinki-based firm's investments in India,” Nokia said in a letter to the Prime Minister's Office. 
 
It has now asked for negotiations under Article 9(2) of BIT to settle the tax disputes involving its manufacturing plant in Chennai. The company has also sought an appointment with the government to begin talks. In the letter, Nokia has said if an "amicable settlement" is not reached, the company has the right to "submit claims to international arbitration." 
 
"The letter seeks amicable resolution of the current tax disputes,” a Nokia spokesperson added. 
 The letter, dated April 30, was sent by the law firm Allen &amp; Overy LLP. "The Indian government has recently made certain changes to its tax legislation. In particular, in the Finance Act (2012), India retrospectively amended Section 9(1) (VI) of the <keyword id="6370810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Income-Tax-Act">Income Tax Act</keyword> (1961). In addition, Indian tax authorities have raised substantial tax demands against Nokia and its subsidiaries, seeking allegedly unpaid taxes, imposed freezing orders on various Nokia assets and failed to comply with various other obligations owed to Nokia's subsidiaries," the letter said. 
 
Nokia might serve the arbitration notice within three months of sending the initial letter, a source informed. 
 
"These and other measures taken by India substantially alter the legal framework for the investments that Nokia has made in India. India's actions are not in compliance with its obligations under the BIT, and they have caused serious and substantial harm to Nokia's investments," it added. 
 
India alleged Nokia had evaded taxes on software downloaded on handsets, manufactured at its Chennai unit, and demanded more than Rs 21,000 crore.

Nokia 8 comes to India to compete with contemporaries both new and old

New Delhi, Jan 8 () Production at Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India's (HMSI) Manesar plant in Haryana and factories of various auto component manufacturers in Manesar-Bawal industrial belt was hit on Wednesday by the day-long strike called by 10 major trade unions against the Centre's "anti-people" policies.
 The strike, however, had no impact on production of auto majors Maruti Suzuki India, Hero MotoCorp and Honda Cars India at their plants in various parts of the country. 
 "Workers in all three shifts at the Manesar plant are not working today in support of the trade union strike," HMSI Employee Union President Suresh Gaur told .
 He said HMSI Manesar plant workers alongwith counterparts from factories of auto component makers Shivam Autotech, Emkay Automobile Industries, Munjal Showa, Napino Auto &amp; Electronics and Talbros, among others have joined in for a day-long protest.
 "Workers at factories in the Manesar-Bawal industrial are supporting the strike and productions have been affected," Gaur claimed.
 When contacted, HMSI officials declined to comment. 
 Workers and officials at Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, Honda Cars India confirmed that production was on normally at their respective plants and the strike has had no impact.
 10 central trade unions have claimed around 25 crore people will participate in the nationwide strike called to protest against the union government's labour reforms, FDI, disinvestment, corporatisation and privatisation policies. 
 They are pressing for a 12-point charter of demands of the working class relating to minimum wage and social security, among others.
 The demands also include a minimum pension of Rs 6,000 for everyone, minimum support price (MSP) for farmers, adequate supply of ration to people, AITUC General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur said, adding that the demands concern common man's issues besides worker-centric areas. RKL RVK
