<ul class="summary-list"><li>Olivia Gaudree started working at Fuel Venture Capital as an intern in her early 20s.</li><li>She worked her way up the ranks and became a partner in under seven years at 28.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Olivia Gaudree, a 28-year-old partner and VP of Operations at Fuel Venture Capital. Business Insider has verified her employment. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I grew up in an entrepreneurial family. My parents work at a family catering restaurant they've run for 30 years. They started a few businesses when I was a child and openly discussed the ups and downs of their businesses' operations.I knew I wanted to do something in business. I thought internships would help me figure out what.I got an internship at a local hedge fund in highschool. I worked there for two summers and one school year.I attended Florida State University and majored in finance. In 2017, my junior year of college, I had a summer financial internship at Thomson Reuters in New York.Those were formative summers for me. Through my exposure as an intern, I learned I liked working with a smaller team, where I had a lot of responsibilities and more creativity, versus a bigger investment house where everyone stays in their lane.I noticed there are ways to move up the corporate ladder at a bigger firm, but maybe not as quickly as at a younger, smaller firm.<h2 id="26c27631-144f-4aad-b290-8f95876eeb4d">Networking helped me land my job in venture capital</h2>At my high school hedge fund internship, I met Maggie Vo, now the managing general partner at Fuel Venture Capital, and got to know her well.I made a point of maintaining the relationship at college. I updated her on my progress and asked about hers.Maggie saw that I was willing to learn quickly and had the work ethic to contribute to the firm. She offered me an internship right after I graduated from college.Connecting with people in venture capital and maintaining those connections is imperative for young people. When you don't have quantitative metrics to prove your worth, industry connections can help. Reaching out meaningfully, even once a quarter, makes relationships warmer.<h2 id="d80906a1-7251-4830-9016-5b91f5bbfaab">Why I chose VC over investment banking and financial services</h2>At the time, I was considering opportunities in investment banking and financial service firms and was fielding full time offers.I chose Fuel because I would work with the investment side and directly with the founders. You don't often get exposure to both sides in a larger firm.When I joined Fuel in 2018, it was a small team of managers with one fund. I could work directly with senior leadership and access all the different parts of the business.It was also a rare opportunity to get into VC early.The typical path into VC starts with working a few years in investment banking, then a few years in a small private equity firm, and then you get a chance at VC. It can take 10 years. The alternative is to get an internship early, prove yourself, and work your way up.These days, there are more early opportunities. Some firms offer entry-level positions within the investment team, but they aren't common. Firms usually want to see that background before coming into VC.<h2 id="3b8bc890-7a6a-4da0-b3cb-bab35ee2a118">I worked my way up from intern to partner in under 7 years</h2>Fuel offered me a full time role three months after I started as an intern at 22. I then worked my way up through several more analyst roles.In the early days, I worked alongside Maggie on the investments team. I tried to absorb as much information as possible from meetings.I was working on decks, putting together due diligence packages on potential portfolio companies, and working on internal processes.I had to work harder since I didn't come to VC from the traditional investment banking path. For the first two years, I immersed myself in the industry, reading as much as possible and listening to industry podcasts.Now, I've done everything from refilling the printer to facilitating successful exits.You need to make yourself indispensable and understand every aspect of the business to thrive. Learning how to communicate effectively with everyone — founders, investors, and colleagues — was especially crucial.One easy, surefire way to move up the ranks is to know what your boss wants and, if possible, meet them there.When I first started as an intern, I also worked directly with Jeff Randsell, Fuel's founding partner. I noticed that he'd spent 25 years working his way up at Merrill Lynch. Because he'd been exposed to that cutthroat environment, I always made sure to be the last person to leave the office. He didn't say this was an expectation, but I hoped he'd recognize my hard work. I think it ultimately contributed to my getting a full time position at Fuel.<h2 id="6b480740-0c25-42a2-9afd-640b460a9dca">I shifted roles and got promoted to partner</h2>An opportunity to move on to operations arose in 2022. I never saw myself in operations because I thought it was a paperwork, back-office role. But it felt like a natural progression in my career, and I still got to work with founders and investors — now I'd understand even more about the business.Coming into the operations side, I had a good macro view of the firm I'd built up in my first four years.In this role, I work with third-party partners, run the audit process, and work directly with the tax and legal teams. I'm also involved in the investment side but with compliance. I even learned how to form a fund from the bottom up.I was promoted to partner,which was very important.<h2 id="d7507795-b2ba-4968-8b0f-430ba4120462">I've put in 110% effort to make it as a woman in VC</h2>With most jobs in finance including VC, there are fewer women at the table. You have to prove yourself and overcome implicit bias when you're a woman or a minority.I account for this by putting in 110% effort and a lot more planning and preparation to ensure I'm viewed as equal to everyone around me.Switching gears and interacting with a stressed founder and then a member of the tax team has been valuable to my career progress. The women I work with are very good at balancing many different things simultaneously. They are also observant and ask hard questions.These skills were especially useful in 2021 when founders went from capital exuberance to more scarcity. Everyone found this challenging.<h2 id="9be33f2f-2918-4b52-9330-3a9e63106dc0">VC means long hours, but it's fulfilling</h2>It's an 80 to 100-hour workweek industry. You have to enjoy the work. If not, it will be miserable.VC has turned out to be a great fit for me, and it's a career path I'm fully committed to.My entire journey has been so fulfilling with Fuel. I've seen founders' growth trajectories and how that's positively impacted all the people they employ and the generational wealth they're creating for their own families.While numbers heavily drive VC, it's also about gut instinct, relationships, and networking. You have to have intuition and move on it. It's not about waiting for direction. While you learn along the way, curiosity, and emotional intelligence are essential at the entry level.

The prestigious venture firm Sequoia Capital likes to say all its partners invest in every sector. But more than anyone, the growth-stage partner Grady, part of Business Insider's 2024 AI Power List, has led the firm's AI strategy, making bets on companies including OpenAI, Harvey, and Hugging Face. It has over 3 million retailers and thousands of sellers on the platform, and delivers to over 1,200 cities. It also enables financial products and services to small businesses, manufacturers, and retailers and more. Over the last 12 months, it claims to have seen strong and steady validation of its multi-category cluster-anchored business strategy. “The regional-operated design will not only get us closer to our customers, but also make our operations more agile and efficient. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Donald Trump Jr. will not take on a White House role, opting instead for the VC firm 1789 Capital.</li><li>The firm, co-founded by Omeed Malik, funds conservative causes like Tucker Carlson's media venture.</li></ul>The venture capital firm that Donald Trump Jr. is reportedly joining eschews investments that push social and environmental issues and instead focuses on what it calls "EIG," or entrepreneurship, innovation, and growth.The Palm Beach, Florida-based firm, called 1789 Capital — the US constitution went into effect that year — has invested in Tucker Carlson's new conservative media venture, Substack, and BlinkRx, a prescription startup.The president-elect's eldest son — who had an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-family-then-and-now-photos-2024-11">active role in Donald Trump's presidential campaign</a> and is now on his transition team — told a group of supporters at a conference earlier this week that he would be joining 1789 as a partner, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/11/us/donald-trump-jr-firm.html">The New York Times first reported</a>. One of 1789's areas of interest is in companies or industries that have faced negative effects of ESG, its website says. It also focuses on what it calls deglobalization, building out an economy that is parallel to the traditional one, and disrupting industries it deems weighed down by excessive bureaucracy. Like 1789 Capital, Trump Jr. has long been a proponent of the parallel economy, also called the "patriot economy," a term used by MAGA conservatives to refer to businesses that align with their traditional values.And Trump Jr.'s connection to Malik, the president of 1789 Capital, includes the pair's mutual support of a parallel economy platform called PublicSquare.Both <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://time.com/6317479/bud-light-boycott-maga-economy-donald-trump-jr/">Malik</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/maga-amazon-alternative-publicsquare-rcna127418">Trump Jr.</a> have been investors in and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.publicsquare.com/events/town-hall">vocal supporters</a> of PublicSquare, an online shopping marketplace similar to Amazon that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://investors.publicsq.com/overview/default.aspx#:~:text=Corporate%20Overview,both%20consumers%20and%20business%20owners.">bills itself as a place to connect</a> Americans to "businesses that value life, family, and freedom." In order to use the platform, businesses have to commit to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://support.publicsquare.com/en/articles/6746843-what-values-do-the-businesses-on-publicsquare-have-to-share">PublicSquare's core values</a>, which include the "sanctity of every life," "the family unit," "freedom and truth," and adherence to the US Constitution.Malik and Trump Jr. together rang the New York Stock Exchange's ceremonial opening bell on the day the company went public in 2023, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://time.com/6317479/bud-light-boycott-maga-economy-donald-trump-jr/">Time Magazine reported</a> at the time. Malik didn't return a request for comment from BI.As for 1789 Capital's own investments, the firm has contributed $15 million to the Tucker Carlson Network, the conservative commentator and former <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tucker-carlson-raise-millions-new-media-company-neil-patel-report-2023-7">Fox News host's new media venture</a>, according to VC database PitchBook.On its website, the firm doesn't tout its specific investments but does offer a broad list of industries it's interested in, including consumer, fintech, healthcare, B2B SaaS, tech-enabled services, software, infrastructure, energy, and special situations.Representatives for Trump Jr. through the Trump Organization and the Trump transition team didn't respond to a request for comment from BI. Buskirk also didn't respond to requests for comment from BI, nor did the company's chief operating officer, Jordan Cohen.

Also, 2,364 startups were funded in India during the year, and 469 of them were in the cloud and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) companies, said a report by <keyword id="290936" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bessemer-venture-partners" source="Orion">Bessemer Venture Partners</keyword> (BVP). “Cloud spending in India grew nearly 22% last year, putting it nearly in line with the entire continent of Europe. Importantly, India’s growth in public cloud services spending vastly outpaces its overall growth in IT spending (2%), more so than for other geographic regions,” the report said. The fact that the Indian cloud market is able to develop multi-product solutions rapidly is a testament to the country's skilled developer workforce and its customer base for SaaS products. Notably, leading cloud companies are incorporating Language and Learning Models (LLMs) in conjunction with human resources. For example, Entropik uses facial expressions and tone of voice analysis to generate user research with emotional intelligence, while Leena AI assists HR teams in creating customised virtual assistants for their respective company's needs and culture, the report said. Indian startups are also leveraging the cloud to offer services and utilise LLMs to enhance accuracy and quality. For example, Pepper Content assists content creators in improving their work and has integrated AI into its quality assurance process, which is later reviewed by employees. Similarly, Perfios helps underwriters analyse credit profiles by using AI to gather and analyse data from various databases, providing lenders with a more complete view of creditworthiness compared to traditional banking methods. In India, AI is being used to improve job performance rather than replace humans. Last year, venture capital investors invested $53 billion in cloud companies outside the US and Canada, accounting for 42% of global cloud VC investment. Additionally, cloud and SaaS deals made up almost a quarter of all venture-backed startups worldwide. Cloud spending in India grew by nearly 22% in 2022, says Bessemer Venture Partners

Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Tuesday announced <keyword id="20404375" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-relief" source="keywords">income tax relief</keyword> for the <keyword id="20071167" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="middle-class" source="keywords">middle class</keyword>, a Rs 2 lakh crore outlay for <keyword id="22517841" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="job-creation-schemes" source="keywords">job creation schemes</keyword> over the next five years and a spending splurge for states run by her party's new coalition partners as she unveiled <keyword id="20509939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi-3-0" source="keywords">Modi 3.0</keyword> government's first budget after the general elections. With rural distress and unemployment being blamed for BJP losing its majority, Sitharaman in her seventh straight budget provided Rs 2.66 lakh crore for <keyword id="20027688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rural-development" source="keywords">rural development</keyword> and maintained spending on long-term infrastructure projects at Rs 11.11 lakh crore to boost <keyword id="19900794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-growth" source="keywords">economic growth</keyword>. She abolished 'angel tax' for all classes of investors in startups, cut customs duty on mobile phones and gold and simplified capital gains tax. She, however, raised the securities transaction tax (STT) on futures and options of securities, which led to tanking of stock markets. "India's economic growth continues to be the shining exception (in a world that is gripped by policy uncertainties) and will remain so in the years ahead," she said. "In this budget, we particularly focus on <keyword id="19898684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment" source="keywords">employment</keyword>, <keyword id="20374219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skilling" source="keywords">skilling</keyword>, MSMEs, and the middle class." Besides Rs 2 lakh crore provided over a five year period for schemes and initiatives to facilitate employment, skilling and other opportunities for 4.1 crore youth, "I have made a provision of Rs 1.48 lakh crore for education, employment and skilling," she said. For Bihar, where assembly elections are due next year, the finance minister announced spending of Rs 60,000 crore on infrastructure projects like expressways, power plant, heritage corridors and new airports. The support to Bihar, whose ruling party and BJP's partner JD-U has been demanding an economic package and special category status for the state, is in the form of capital projects but not subsidy or cash dole. Similarly, for Andhra Pradesh, whose ruling TDP recently joined BJP-led NDA, she allocated Rs 15,000 crore in financial aid through multilateral agencies. A similar request for support to Bihar will be expedited, she said. For the middle class, she raised standard deduction -- a flat deduction from total salary earned by an employee in a year before calculating applicable income tax rate -- by 50 per cent to Rs 75,000 and tweaked tax slabs for taxpayers opting for the new income tax regime. This will lead to taxpayers under the new tax regime -- which offers lower rates of taxes but permits limited deductions and exemptions -- saving up to Rs 17,500 in tax annually, she said. To spur employment, the Budget provided for incentives for companies, including paying for one-month salary for first-time employees, incentive at specified sale to both employee and empower with respect to their retirement fund contribution in the first four years of employment and reimbursing employers up to Rs 3,000 per month for 2 years towards EPFO contribution of each additional employee. Also, a programme to improve skills as well internship for students and subsidised loans for higher education will be provided, she said. India's official unemployment rate in urban areas is pegged at 6.7 per cent but private agencies put it at much higher levels. Buoyed by robust tax collections and a higher-than-expected dividend receipt from the Reserve Bank, Sitharaman said the government's fiscal deficit -- the difference between the total revenue earned and total expenditure -- will be trimmed to 4.9 per cent of the GDP in 2024-25, below the 5.1 per cent figure estimated in the interim budget she presented in February. She reduced gross market borrowing marginally to Rs 14.01 lakh crore. The Budget for 2024-25 fiscal (April 2024 to March 2025) allocated Rs 1.52 lakh crore for agriculture and allied sectors, aid for building 3 crore affordable housing units in urban and rural areas, provided credit support to small and medium businesses, raised small loans to Rs 20 lakh for small business, proposed setting up 12 industrial parks, and provided for setting up a Rs 1,000 crore venture capital fund for space sector.

Modi 3.0 1st Budget: Tax relief for middle class, Rs 2 lakh cr job scheme

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Women's Tennis Association has partnered with CVC Capital Partners in an effort to advance the commercial growth of the sport.</li></ul>The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) on Tuesday announced a partnership with CVC Capital Partners to "further elevate the profile of women's tennis and to accelerate commercial growth for the benefit of the fans, players, tournaments and other stakeholders in the game," according to a release.The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/wta-ventures-womens-tennis-cvc-capital-partners-883aab99bff7180288c7be267146ae8d" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">reported</a> that CVC will contribute $150 million for a 20% stake in WTA Ventures LLC, a private company resulting from the partnership.Founded by Billie Jean King in 1973, the WTA is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. CVC, a Luxembourg-based private equity firm, has invested in Formula One, Moto GP, the French Football League, La Liga, and a number of other professional sports leagues."The WTA has a strong legacy of empowering female athletes over the last 50 years," WTA Chairman and CEO Steve Simon said in a statement to Insider.
