Imagine relaxing alone in the vastness of space, with everyone you know too far away to interrupt your solitude, only for your distant neighbour to start blasting loud music at you! That's exactly what happened to <keyword id="19901191" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Venus" source="keywords">Venus</keyword> last Friday (July 12), when it got beamed by a hip-hop track courtesy of Earth and its noisy “intelligent” life.<br /><br />The song chosen for this cosmic broadcast was ‘The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)’ by <keyword id="22437882" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Missy-Elliott" source="keywords">Missy Elliott</keyword>. Explaining this choice, Brittany Brown, director of the Digital and Technology Division at <keyword id="19935155" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NASA" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NASA" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NASA">NASA</keyword>’s Office of Communications, said: “Both <keyword id="19929542" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-exploration" source="keywords">space exploration</keyword> and Missy Elliott's art have been about pushing boundaries. Missy has a track record of infusing space-centric storytelling and futuristic visuals in her music videos, so the opportunity to collaborate on something out of this world is truly fitting.”<br /><br />Transmitted at the speed of light, the song journeyed approximately 254 million kilometres from Earth to Venus, completing the trip in just 14 minutes.<br /><br /><div type="twitter" handle="MissyElliott" handlename="MissyElliott" favoritecount="0" retweetcount="0" id="1812951003144007843"></div><br />Now for the billion-dollar question: Why was this done? The truth is, we don’t exactly know. <br /><br />NASA's news release didn’t specify a particular purpose. However, it might have been intended to mark a historic first for both NASA and Missy Elliott, while also promoting space exploration, the agency's upcoming Venus missions, and the shared values of pushing boundaries and inspiring the public through innovative collaborations.<br /><br />What it certainly showcases is the remarkable capability of NASA’s technology. This transmission was made possible by NASA's <keyword id="20775364" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deep-Space-Network" source="keywords">Deep Space Network</keyword> (DSN), which used the largest and most sensitive telecommunication service of NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program. The DSN's array of giant radio antennas allows missions to track, send commands and receive scientific data from spacecraft exploring the moon and beyond.<br /><br />The song was beamed by the 34-metre (112-foot) wide Deep Space Station 13 (DSS-13) radio dish antenna, located at the DSN's Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex near Barstow, California. Coincidentally, the DSS-13 is also nicknamed Venus.<br /><br />To date, the system has transmitted only one other song into space—The Beatles' ‘Across the Universe’—making the transmission of Elliott's song a groundbreaking moment for both hip-hop and NASA.<br />

As space in the capital is restricted, homeowners have chosen instead to dig under their existing homes, and many have annoyed neighbours in the process - they argue that the work can cause groundwater problems, and the building work is often noisy and lengthy.</p><p>The High Court case is being brought by Michael Eatherley, a Kentish Town resident who lives in a row of Victorian cottages.</p><p>He is challenging Camden council for allowing a neighbour to build a basement extension under so-called "permitted development rights," a system which allows homeowners to bypass the formal planning application process, as long as the extension is only one storey deep.</p><p>The "iceberg extensions" favoured by the very richest people <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/inside-londons-insanely-luxurious-basements-the-new-favourite-2016-3/#architecturally-londons-luxury-basements-are-spectacular-they-can-double-living-space-in-a-city-where-land-is-a-rare-and-precious-this-basement-project-the-brainchild-of-prestige-exclusive-lifestyle-with-rigby-and-rigby-will-transform-the-property-3">such as Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich</a> - which are often several storeys deep - already have to go through the formal planning process, and that means councils can reduce disruption by regulating the working hours of builders.</p><p>But local councils have a limited ability to regulate one-storey extensions, and neighbours have a limited ability to object to them. If Eatherley is successful, it will set a national precedent for homeowners having to apply formally to build a basement.</p><p>There were a total of 887 applications to build a residential basement in 2015 - that is a quarter more than in 2015, and almost double the previous peak in 2007.</p><p>Some London councils have already moved to block basement builders from using "permitted development rights." <a href="https://www.rbkc.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/heritage-and-conservation/policies/article-4-directions">Kensington and Chelsea introduced a clause this year which means that any basement has to go through the formal planning process.</a></p><p>Eatherley told the Financial Times: "It is only a little basement but the principle is quite important.
