<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:401px"><div class="image">LinkedInEly Kahn, VP of business development at Sqrrl</div></div>Sqrrl, a Cambridge, Mass.-based <keyword id="774829" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Big-Data">big data</keyword> startup founded last year by six former <keyword id="113687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="national-security">National Security</keyword> Agency employees, is building a business around tech that protects the US from terrorist attacks and other national <keyword id="6355300" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="security">security</keyword> threats.
The tech is called Accumulo, and the <keyword id="38879" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NSA">NSA</keyword> created it in 2008 as a way to store super secret documents and only allow authorized people to access them. NSA released it as an open source project in 2011.
Accumulo is rumored to have been used to help the CIA track down Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011. Ely Kahn, VP of business development at Sqrrl, declined to comment.
But Kahn did tell us that Accumulo is playing an important role in protecting the US.
“I can say that Accumulo is the foundation for a number of the most widely used analytical tools at the NSA and is a critical element to NSA's cloud strategy,” Kahn told us. “As a result, Accumulo is a critical tool for ensuring the national security of the United States.”
Accumulo is a member of a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/things-are-getting-tense-as-startups-fight-free-apps-for-a-new-billion-dollar-market-2012-1">new type of database called NoSQL</a> which handles large amounts of data by spreading computing and storage across many machines. Where traditional databases only handle certain types of data and run on a single machine, Accumulo can handle multiple media types and runs on multiple machines.
This lets it grow really, really big. 
It's not the only noSQL <keyword id="140601" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="database">database</keyword> around. Others include MongoDB, Couchbase and Cassandra.
But Accumlo is different because the NSA designed it so that only certain people could access top secret files stored in it. This is useful for enterprises like banks, telecom and healthcare with strict security requirements.
Other <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/14-big-data-startups-on-the-rise-2013-6">big data startups are doing this</a>, too, such as WibiData, Continuuity and LucidWorks. But Kahn said Sqrrl has an advantage because its tech is already used in government agencies.
“We have a lot of experience in this space, and our product is already proven,” Kahn said.

According to Dice's data, there are dozens of programming and data skills that will net you, on average, over $100,000, and some that routinely clear $110,000. Most of these skills are also quite specialized, Dice President Shravan Goli says, which helps boost their value.
The top-earning skill is R, a programming language most commonly used by statisticians and data miners. Of the more than 17,236 technology professionals Dice surveyed, those with that skill reported an average salary of $115,531.

10 Tech Skills That Will Earn You Over $100,000

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image">AP</div></div>We've been documenting the implosion of <keyword id="852306" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fusion-io">Fusion-IO</keyword>, a 2011 IPO darling and the employer of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.
On Wednesday, the company reported <a href="http://www.fusionio.com/press-releases/fusion-io-reports-fiscal-first-quarter-2014-results/">a loss for the quarter</a> and said its CFO, Dennis Wolf, was leaving.
For the quarter that ended on Sept. 30, Fusion-io reported a loss of $27.9 million, or 28 cents a share. A year ago, it reported a 4 cents per share profit ($3.9 million). On a non-GaaP basis, it reported a loss of 7 cents per share. Analysts were expecting a loss of 11 cents.
Revenue was down 27% to $86.3 million, slightly beating expectations for $84.73 million, a drop of 28%.
Fusion-io significantly will miss expectations for the current quarter, however, saying it expected only slightly higher revenue, while analysts were counting on a rise of more than 30% to $113.8 million.
Stock is down almost 13% in after hours trading.
Fusion-IO, which makes flash storage systems for enterprises was one of the most anticipated tech IPOs in 2011. Fusion IO raised $233 million in the IPO by selling shares for $19 each and the shares jumped to as high as $39.60 in its first five months. 
But in early 2013, Fusion-io admitted that it was relying heavily on just two customers: Facebook and Apple. They accounted for about 50% of revenues, and both companies said they had plenty of flash storage and would buy less in the future. Plus there's a ton of new competition in this market, including Violin Memory, which finally went public last month after years of hinting about an IPO. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/violin-memorys-ceo-on-its-awful-ipo-2013-9">IPO didn't go well</a>.
In 2013, it's been a revolving door among Fusion-IO executives. The company hired former HP executive Shane Robison and, a couple of weeks later, the two cofounders David Flynn (CEO) and Rick White (CMO) suddenly left. 
Robison was previously Chief Strategy Officer at Hewlett Packard. He left HP in 2011 and a year later, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shane-robison-hp-autonomy-2012-11">HP CEO Meg Whitman publicly blamed him</a> for HP's disastrous acquisition of Autonomy.
Wolf left Fusion-IO to become CFO at DataStax, a startup that makes a NoSQL database and has a number of big <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> customers.
In the meantime, Fusion-IO stock is down more than 40% since the start of the year and the outlook isn't good.

More Bad News From Steve Wozniak's Fusion-IO: A Crummy Outlook And The CFO Is Leaving

The truth is, that timeline includes only a small sample of the tech Facebook has invented and, more importantly, given away for free.
Most big cloud companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft and others invent their own technology to run their own business operations. But unlike those companies, Facebook has an open-source ethic, meaning it almost always gives its tech away to be freely used by others. This, in turn, lets people outside of Facebook add their own tweaks to projects. So Facebook gets the benefit of having lots of people contribute to its tech. (That's how open source works.)
We couldn't begin to list all the technology that Facebook has invented in the last 10 years. Many of it is deeply geeky stuff for writing software or running corporate data centers. But here's a small roundup of some of the most significant pieces:
Facebook created a database called Cassandra. This is something called a "noSQL database," meaning that it runs on low-cost computer servers and can store all kinds of data. Cassandra is popular and used by companies like Netflix, eBay, Twitter, Reddit, Cisco and others.
Facebook has <a href="https://code.facebook.com/projects/">released dozens of free software development</a> tools like "xctool" for testing iOS apps; "Buck" for writing Android apps; and "Origami" that lets non-programmers use Apple's free animation Mac OS X app, Quartz Composer, for building mobile apps.

Wanted: Business Insider Seeks A PHP System Architect

They didn't know they would soon leave physics and become cofounders of a hot young startup, Cloudant.
This summer the God particle (also known as the Higgs boson particle) was found, validating five decades of physics work and about $10 billion dollars spent to build the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva.
The guys from Cloudant cheered when they heard the news. All three had worked at the LHC at one point so they helped to <a href="%20http://www.businessinsider.com/why-is-the-god-particle-such-a-big-deal-2012-7">discover this particle, which is proof of an invisible field</a> that causes other particles to stick together and form everything physical in the universe from cells to stars.
"We were certainly very excited. We had friends in the auditorium when they made the announcement," Cloudant cofounder Alan Hoffman told Business Insider.
But they also felt "deep disappointment," explained cofounder Mike Miller. "Higgs was the last piece of puzzle and it was a corner piece. The hope was that would link to another puzzle or some kind of hint of where to go next but it just kind of ended the puzzle."
But Hoffman and Miller know exactly what their future holds: growing their young database-as-as-service startup.
They had created a <keyword id="140601" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="database">database</keyword> that helped thousands of collider scientists to share data with others around the world, built on a popular open-source noSQL database known as Couch.
They had no plans to turn it into a for-profit business until December, 2007, when BusinessWeek ran a cover story called <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/stories/2007-12-12/google-and-the-wisdom-of-clouds">Google and The Wisdom of The Clouds</a>. It was an introduction to the explosion of data now known as "big data."
"Oh my God, this is what we do," Miller said when he saw the article. "We all saw this as a chance."
A few months later, in 2008, the three friends left science to launch their startup. Cloudant was accepted as into the Y Combinator Boston accelerator.
Today, it has about 40 employees, serving about 12,000 customers with its freemium cloud, with about 3% as paying customers. In 2012, it grew 10 times bigger over 2011.
Cloudant raised about $4 million in venture capital from Avalon Ventures in 2010. Plus, in October, the CIA's venture funding arm In-Q-Tel also took a stake of <a href="https://cloudant.com/cloudant-and-iqt-sign-agreement-to-advance-cloud-database-technology-for-u-s-intelligence-community/">an undisclosed amount. </a>
The best part of being a startup founder compared to a physicist?
"I love how easy it is to get money as a startup compared to the grant process," Miller laughs. As a startup,"you can walk into a room and get a handshake when things go right."

During <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/1906251-oracles-ceo-discusses-f2q-2014-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=single">the company's quarterly conference call</a>, he categorically denied that another reorganization was taking place.
"We don't have any salespeople changing territory, changing accounts. We're not reorg-ing anything. If anything, we're actually really happy with the model we're in," he said.
And he had the numbers behind him: On Wednesday, Oracle had<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/live-oracle-reports-earnings-2013-12"> its first beat-the-street quarter, after three whiffs in a row</a>. That's a hopeful sign.
Changes to Oracle's North American sales force and/or its hardware <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-reorgs-makes-nice-with-hp-2013-12">unit were rumored to be quietly under way, </a>Wall Street analyst Pat Walravens, director of technology research for JMP Securities told Business Insider earlier this week.
It's all part of a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-reorgs-makes-nice-with-hp-2013-12">never-ending stream of stories from current and former salespeople</a> complaining that Hurd's sales plan isn't working. (Oracle has a massive, thousands-strong salesforce, so it's not particularly surprising that some of them are grumblers.) About two years ago, Hurd began restructuring Oracle's legendary sales force, hiring thousands more sales people, shrinking territories and asking salespeople to specialize in particular products.
As Oracle CEO Larry Ellison described it on Wednesday's call:
"Mark has emphasized that we haven't made any changes and that's absolutely true. A while ago though, we decided we had to line up an HCM [Human Capital Management software] sales force directly against Workday. That's all they think about every day. We have another [team] that competes against Salesforce.com ... another team that focuses on SAP. "
Oracle is no longer hiring, Hurd said on Wednesday, and its sales team is fully staffed.
Revenue was up 2% from the year-ago quarter, to $9.28 billion. That's healthy but not stunning: All of it was from software license renewal contracts and product support contracts (which covers things like tech support). That revenue came from existing customers, not new software, cloud or hardware sales.
On the analyst call, CFO Safra Catz was asked if Oracle was going to continue to remain one of the most profitable tech companies ever. She said that depends on the sales force:
"What you can see in our numbers right now, year over year, the difference is that we've invested in sales capacity right now compared to last year, and we expect that to pay off."
Josh Olson, technology analyst for Edward Jones, told Business Insider that Oracle has about two more quarters to show that Hurd's overhaul is working.
"Oracle is right on cusp of a potential breakthrough, but keeps kind of teasing us," Olson said. "We've been looking for an inflection point and it keeps getting pushed out and pushed out. If we don't see it in the next few quarters, our concerns would be heightened."
Salespeople <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-sales-force-changes-2013-9">have told Business Insider</a> that under Hurd's plan their territories are too small, and there are too many of them all hitting up the same customers. The revenue increase, however, suggests those criticisms may not be seeing the bigger picture.
Meanwhile, Oracle's management insists it's got a line-up of new products that enterprises are eager to buy, including new cloud computing products, new hardware designed to run its apps, and a new database, the 12c. The database market is Oracle's bread-and-butter. The 12c database was created for cloud computing and runs at "ungodly" speeds, as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-data-at-ungodly-speeds-2013-9">Ellison once described it. </a>
"We've seen more interest in 12c than any database version in recent memory," Ellison said on Wednesday. He predicted that the company would see "very rapid uptake" in sales of this database in 2014 and 2015.
Olson says that if Oracle doesn't deliver on those promises and posts "another big miss" in its fourth quarter, the one that ends in June, that means the "rumors of the sales force being disgruntled" could be true. Or it could mean that enterprises are starting to use new, rival database technologies like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-guy-that-invented-an-amazing-big-data-tech-says-oracle-and-microsoft-should-not-be-afraid-2012-5">Hadoop</a> or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-the-latest-threat-to-oracles-database-empire-2013-6">noSQL</a> databases.
Olson is bullish that Oracle will do well, and the changes in the sales force will pay off. Edward Jones has reiterated its buy rating for Oracle, he said.
