While Samsung has offered the device in good colour options, it does not stand apart, but it is expected at this price point. The Berry Blue variant I received looked good, but its back is a fingerprint magnet. You will have to use a case with the device. Unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy M14 5G features a triple camera setup at the back. The three sensors come with their own cutouts and an LED flash. Apart from this, the back comes with Samsung’s branding at the bottom. The device features the SIM tray on the left side, and the right side houses the volume rockers and the power button, doubling up as the fingerprint sensor. The device weighs 206 grams, which is all right considering the large display and the 6,000mAh battery. While I did not have any issues while using the device, people with small hands may find it difficult to use the device with one hand for a long period. <div type="image" title="Display" msid="100189684" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Samsung Galaxy M14 5G display&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The device sports a large 6.6-inch Full HD+ LCD on the front with a 90Hz refresh rate. First, you will notice that Samsung has opted for an older waterdrop notch instead of a punch-hole notch. The device offers a good experience indoors but struggles a bit when you use the device outdoors in direct sunlight. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Software and performance" comment="subhead" text="Software and performance">Software and performance</cmsannotation> The Samsung Galaxy M14 5G comes with Android 13 out of the box with the company’s OneUI Core 5.1 on top. The company has promised two years of Android OS updates and four years of security updates for the device. For those unaware, OneUI Core is a toned-down version of OneUI and misses out on features such as Bixby Routines, Windows Link, Edge Lighting, and more. <div type="image" title="UI" msid="100189755" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Galaxy M14 5G UI and pre-installed applications&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The Galaxy M14 5G has many bloatware apps, including Samsung apps, Netflix, Facebook, Amazon, Candy Crush, and more. While some Samsung apps cannot be removed, you can easily uninstall third-party apps. The user interface is easy to understand and offers a clutter-free experience. Coming to performance, the device is equipped with the company’s Exynos 1330 chipset coupled with up to 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. We found the device performs well in day-to-day tasks, but there are occasional stutters while launching an app or performing heavy tasks. I tried playing Call of Duty: Mobile and Asphalt 9 on the device. While the device could handle Call of Duty: Mobile decently, I noticed occasional lags while playing Asphalt 9. Overall, the Galaxy M14 5G offers decent performance, and if you are not a hardcore gamer, you will have no issues with the device. It is worth considering if you are a casual gamer looking for an affordable device. The Galaxy M14 5G is powered by a 6,000mAh battery and supports 25W fast charging. The battery life is easily the highlight of the device. The device lasts for two days with regular usage, a few hours of streaming, and some light gaming. As the device offers only 25W charging, it takes nearly 100 minutes to be fully charged. Despite being a budget device, it does not have a charging brick inside the box. It has a long battery life and a large display fits the use case for those who watch a lot of videos on the phone. This, coupled with 5G support, makes it a good option for users looking for a reliable smartphone without burning a hole in their pocket. For some, the device’s average camera, bulky design, and slow charging may be an issue. The Redmi Note 12 is another option worth considering in this range but does not offer 5G support. (Cell phone addiction <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-nomophobia-2014-7">even has a clinical name now</a>: "nomophobia").Unfortunately for most of us, research suggests that we could be missing out on a lot by turning to our smartphones whenever we feel the pangs of boredom. Here's why it might be a good idea to unplug and get back to being bored for a while:

Smartphone addiction even has a name now; <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-nomophobia-2014-7">nomophobia</a>, short for no-mobile-phone phobia. We've all probably experienced the symptoms at one point: panicking when separated from our smartphone, not being able to focus at work or during conversations, and constantly checking phones for new notifications. The idea of being addicted to a screen is not a nice one, and according to a Deloitte survey, smartphone users have started to realize they might have a problem. Smartphone usage has been trending upwards since 2015, but for the first time Deloitte found that smartphone usage declined or plateaued in 2017, with almost half (47%) of survey respondents reporting that they are trying to reduce or limit their phone use. Interestingly, the most concerned groups of people are between 18 and 34 years of age. Seventy-two percent of 18 to 24-year-olds reported they "definitely" or "probably" use their phones too much, and 75% of respondents 25-34-years-old also said they use their phones too much. In contrast, only 13% of those 55 and older are concerned about their over use. <h2>Common strategies to cut back</h2>Across all age groups there are a few common strategies for curbing the addiction. Most common is keeping a phone in a handbag or pocket when meeting other people. Years ago, this might have been normal common courtesy, and users are happily attempting to revert to the habit. Another common and easy trick is turning off audio notifications. Out of sight, out of earshot, and out of mind. Despite the slowly reversing trend, Americans still have a long ways to go. Americans are more worried than ever about being addicted to their smartphones - and they're starting to cut back

According to <a href="http://www.pewinternet.org/data-trend/mobile/device-ownership/">data from the Pew Research Center</a>, 90% of Americans have a cell phone, while a full 58% of them own smartphones. 
More surprising, though, is the percentage of people who have developed a psychological attachment to their phones. 
It's called "nomophobia" (short for no-mobile-phone phobia), and psychologists say that it's affecting more and more young people. 
Symptoms include feelings of panic or desperation when separated from your smartphone, not being able to focus on conversations or work, and constantly checking phones for notifications. Some people may think their phone is ringing when it's not, a condition named <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9227184/Cellphone_vibration_syndrome_and_other_signs_of_tech_addiction">cellphone vibration syndrome</a> that researchers say could be a sign of a more serious technology addiction.
According to Dr. David Greenfield, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, an attachment to your smartphone is similar to other addictions in that it involves a dysregulation of dopamine. Dopamine is a <a href="http://www.psychologytoday.com/basics/dopamine">neurotransmitter that regulates the brain's reward center</a>, meaning that it motivates people to do things they think they will be rewarded for doing.
Greenfield founded the <a href="http://virtual-addiction.com/">Center for Internet and Technology Addiction</a> <a href="http://virtual-addiction.com/"></a> to help the always-connected find a better balance in their lives.
"Every time you get a notification from your phone, there's a little elevation in dopamine that says you might have something that's compelling, whether that's a text message from someone you like, an email, or anything," Greenfield said to Business Insider. "The thing is you don't know what it's going to be or when you're going to get it, and that's what compels the brain to keep checking. It's like the world's smallest slot machine." 
In a <a href="https://www.lookout.com/news-mobile-security/sprint-lookout-mobile-privacy-survey">national survey conducted by Harris Interactive</a> in the fall of 2013, 63% of respondents said they check their phone for messages or calls once an hour, while 9% said they checked their phone every five minutes. 
An additional 63% said they would be upset if they left home without their smartphone. Many would return home to retrieve it, even if they're out on just a quick trip to the store. 
And, according to a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/16/sleep-phone-tablet-bed_n_3924161.html">survey by the Huffington Post and YouGov</a>, 64% of people between the ages 18 and 29 have fallen asleep with their tablet or cell phone in bed with them.
Still, you may not have heard of nomophobia because people who suffer from it may not even realize they have a problem.
"As with any addiction, denial is the number one hallmark. There aren't a lot of people who come out and say they have a problem, and the link with the anxiety they feel is much more tenuous," psychiatrist Dale Archer said to Business Insider. "Plus, the symptoms are not that bad with the majority of people. Like any addiction, I suspect it will be like that - 1% of the population with a full-blown problem that affects their lives."

Some psychologists <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4036142/#b65-prbm-7-155">have proposed</a> adding nomophobia to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is considered to be the ultimate authority on mental health.
"It is undeniable that technology through new social media, social network sites, social informatics, and social software...enables us to perform our job more quickly and with efficiency," Nicola Luigi Bragazzi and Giovanni Del Puente of the University of Genoa wrote in their <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4036142/#b65-prbm-7-155">DSM proposal.</a> "On the other hand, mobile devices can have a dangerous impact on human health. Further research is needed, above all academic and scholarly studies, to investigate more in depth the psychological aspects of nomophobia and to provide a standardized and operational definition of it."
Greenfield says that nomophobia is just a small subset of a larger problem with Internet addiction. 
"A smartphone is just a more readily available access point to the Internet. My research has shown that the ease of access, availability, and portability makes it twice as addictive as other modalities," he said. "Convenience is the mother of addiction - the quicker you can get a hit back on the technology, the faster the intoxication." 
Plus, constantly receiving tons of likes on your tweets or Instagram photos creates this feeling of self-importance that just isn't real.
"That feeling you're going to miss something if you're not constantly checking is an illusion - most parts of our lives are not relevant to our smartphones," Greenfield said. "What happens on our devices is not reflective of what happens in real life." 
Digital detox programs, like <a href="http://campgrounded.org/">Camp Grounded</a> in northern California, ban electronic devices in the hopes that a true unplugging will help cure technology addiction. Guests at Camp Grounded participate in activities like archery, sing-a-longs, and meditative breathing workshops, all without the constant influence of a smartphone or other device. 
In China, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/internet-addiction-treatment-camps-in-china-2014-7">Internet-hooked teens are often sent</a> to boot camps where they undergo intense military-style training designed to break their addiction.
But both Greenfield and Archer say that curing nomophobia doesn't always require such extreme measures. 
Greenfield suggests downloading an app, like <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/tech/how-often-do-you-check-your-smartphone-enough-to-87795929829.html">Menthal</a>, that records just how much time you're spending on your phone each day. A huge amount of people lose track of time and space when they're on their devices, which affects the brain in a way similar to the way a drug would. 
And Archer says it's important to create guidelines for when it's appropriate to use your phone - for making a phone call, for instance - and when it's not. 
"Stop texting while you're driving. Don't take it into the bathroom with you. Have a rule not to use your phone when you're with your friends. If you're on a date, make a rule that you'll both check your phone for a maximum of 5 minutes every 90 minutes," Archer said. "It's all about setting simple rules that you can follow."

Smartphone Addiction Now Has A Clinical Name

You've probably felt some sort of frustration or even panic when you realize you accidentally left your phone behind.
What you're feeling is separation anxiety, or "nomophobia," which is specific to the anxiety driven by the absence of your mobile device.&#xa0;And yes, "nomo" stands for "no mobile."
You might readily admit that you're overly dependent on your smartphone, but&#xa0;psychologists at Iowa State University have devised a questionnaire to measure exactly the degree you experience nomophobia.
<a href="http://digest.bps.org.uk/2015/05/a-new-questionnaire-measures-peoples-no.html">Research Digest</a> revealed that the psychologists involved in the study identified four major themes when thinking about nomophobia.
The first is the "fear&#xa0;of not being able to communicate," referring to the inability to contact others or be contacted via phone or text. 
The second is anxiety over losing "connectedness," which involves losing touch with notifications of social interaction from email or social networks.&#xa0;
The third theme is losing the ability to access information, like making a quick internet search on a whim to scratch a curiosity itch. Just imagine not being able to scratch that itch.
Fourth is the loss of the convenience we've come to expect with our smartphones, like checking directions on a maps app.
<a href="http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2015/05/your-smartphone-codependence-quantified.html?mid=twitter_nymag">NYMag</a> obtained the short questionnaire, so go ahead and see how often you would reply "yes" to each of the following questions:&#xa0;
1. I would feel uncomfortable without constant access to information through my smartphone.
2. I would be annoyed if I could not look information up on my smartphone when I wanted to do so.
3. Being unable to get the news (e.g., happenings, weather, etc.) on my smartphone would make me nervous.
4. I would be annoyed if I could not use my smartphone and/or its capabilities when I wanted to do so.
5. Running out of battery in my smartphone would scare me.
6. If I were to run out of credits or hit my monthly data limit, I would panic.
7. If I did not have a data signal or could not connect to Wi-Fi, then I would constantly check to see if I had a signal or could find a Wi-Fi network.
8. If I could not use my smartphone, I would be afraid of getting stranded somewhere.
9. If I could not check my smartphone for a while, I would feel a desire to check it.
If I did not have my smartphone with me ... 10. I would feel anxious because I could not instantly communicate with my family and/or friends.
11. I would be worried because my family and/or friends could not reach me.
12. I would feel nervous because I would not be able to receive text messages and calls.
13. I would be anxious because I could not keep in touch with my family and/or friends.
14. I would be nervous because I could not know if someone had tried to get a hold of me.
15. I would feel anxious because my constant connection to my family and friends would be broken.
16. I would be nervous because I would be disconnected from my online identity.
17. I would be uncomfortable because I could not stay up-to-date with social media and online networks.
18. I would feel awkward because I could not check my notifications for updates from my connections and online networks.
19. I would feel anxious because I could not check my email messages.
20. I would feel weird because I would not know what to do.

Researchers say how you answer these 20 questions will tell the true story of your smartphone addiction

With access to apps that instantly connects us to millions of users, much of our day is spent hunched over a screen. Adam Alter, author of '<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Irresistible-Addictive-Technology-Business-Keeping/dp/1594206643">'Irresistible</a>,'' explores the rise of technology addiction - specifically in teenagers. The following is a transcript of the video. Adam Alter: Nomophobia is a new word that's being coined to describe no mobile phobia and it's the idea that a lot of us, in thinking about not having our phones, experience something like a phobia and this is supposed to describe hundreds of millions of people today and I'm sure that number is growing at the moment. What that means is that when you think about, for example, your phone falling out of your pocket, tumbling to the ground and shattering into a million pieces, you should experience anxiety symptoms and it's especially true among young people.Alter: I ran a study at one point where I asked young people, a whole lot of teenagers, a very simple question. I said to them, "Imagine you have this very unpleasant choice. So, you can either watch your phone tumble to the ground and shatter into a million pieces or you can have a small bone in your hand broken." Now, that seems to people of a certain age and older like a fairly straightforward question with a straightforward answer. It seems ridiculous. Of course you choose to save the integrity of your hand and let your phone break. You can always replace a phone, but for young people this is actually a very difficult question. In my experience, about 40% - 50% of them will say, "Ultimately, I think it probably makes more sense to have a bone in my hand broken than it does to have my phone broken."Alter: And, you can understand why that is, apart from the fact that it is expensive to have a phone repaired and there's some time where you're without your phone, that is their portal to a social world that is very important to them. Being without that social world for a while is probably not as detrimental in some respects as being without a particular bone in your hand. Most of the time, you can get by and you can see this in the way they ask follow-up questions. So, a lot of these teens will say to me things like, "Is it my left hand or my right hand?" and the most important question, "Once I break that bone in my hand, can I still use my phone? Is it a bone that I need to be able to scroll on the phone, because if it is, then that's no deal, but if it's not a bone that I need to use my screen at least I can continue to use my phone during the time I'm healing." If people are willing to endure physical harm to keep their phones that obviously suggests that this is a major issue.Alter: The definition that I like for behavioral addiction that makes the most sense to me is an experience that we return to compulsively over and over again because it feels good in a short run but in the long run, it ultimately undermines our well-being in some respect. So, it can be someone who notices that over time their social relationships are degrading because they don't have a consistent, face-to-face contact with people and that's especially problematic for kids who need time in that real face-to-face social world because that's where they develop all the competencies of being a social creature. The way to work out what other people are thinking, to share your feelings in a way that you want them to be shared for other people to understand you for you to make just the right facial expressions at just the right times. Those seem like obvious and easy-to-do things for most adults but for kids it's very difficult to do that. They take time to hone those skills and so you need face-to-face time to do that and if you don't have that, if you're spending all your time on screens because it's really fun to crush one more candy on Candy Crush or do whatever it is that you might be doing, you're not developing those long-term competencies and therefore your long-term well-being is degraded.

Teens would rather break their bones than lose their phones

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div></div>The smartphone is ubiquitous, addictive and transformativeTHE dawn of the planet of the smartphones came in January 2007, when Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, in front of a rapt audience of Apple acolytes, brandished a slab of plastic, metal and silicon not much bigger than a Kit Kat. "This will change everything," he promised. For once there was no hyperbole. Just eight years later Apple's iPhone exemplifies the early 21st century's defining technology.Smartphones matter partly because of their ubiquity. They have become the fastest-selling gadgets in history, outstripping the growth of the simple mobile phones that preceded them. They outsell personal computers four to one. Today about half the adult population owns a smartphone; by 2020, 80% will. Smartphones have also penetrated every aspect of daily life. The average American is buried in one for over two hours every day. Asked which media they would miss most, British teenagers pick mobile devices over TV sets, PCs and games consoles. Nearly 80% of smartphone-owners check messages, news or other services within 15 minutes of getting up. About 10% admit to having used the gadget during sex.The bedroom is just the beginning. Smartphones are more than a convenient route online, rather as cars are more than engines on wheels and clocks are not merely a means to count the hours. Much as the car and the clock did in their time, so today the smartphone is poised to enrich lives, reshape entire industries and transform societies--and in ways that Snapchatting teenagers cannot begin to imagine.<h3>Phono sapiens</h3>The transformative power of smartphones comes from their size and connectivity. Size makes them the first truly personal computers. The phone takes the processing power of yesterday's supercomputers--even the most basic model has access to more number-crunching capacity than NASA had when it put men on the Moon in 1969--and applies it to ordinary human interactions (see pages 21-24). Because transmitting data is cheap this power is available on the move. Since 2005 the cost of delivering one megabyte wirelessly has dropped from $8 to a few cents. It is still falling. The boring old PC sitting on your desk does not know much about you. But phones travel around with you--they know where you are, what websites you visit, whom you talk to, even how healthy you are.The combination of size and connectivity means that this knowledge can be shared and aggregated, bridging the realms of bits and atoms in ways that are both professional and personal. Uber connects available drivers to nearby fares at cheaper prices; Tinder puts people in touch with potential dates. In future, your phone might recommend a career change or book a doctor's appointment to treat your heart murmur before you know anything is amiss.As with all technologies, this future conjures up a host of worries. Some, such as "text neck" (hunching over a smartphone stresses the spine) are surely transient. Others, such as dependency--smartphone users exhibit "nomophobia" when they happen to find themselves empty-handed--are a measure of utility as much as addiction. After all, people also hate to be without their wheels or their watch.The greater fear is over privacy. The smartphone turns the person next to you into a potential publisher of your most private or embarrassing moments. Many app vendors, who know a great deal about you, sell data without proper disclosure; mobile-privacy policies routinely rival "Hamlet" for length. And if leaked documents are correct, GCHQ, Britain's signals-intelligence agency, has managed to hack a big vendor of SIM cards in order to be able to listen in to people's calls (see page 23). If spooks in democracies are doing this sort of thing, you can be sure that those in authoritarian regimes will, too. Smartphones will give dictators unprecedented scope to spy on and corral their unwilling subjects.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><h3>The naked app</h3>Yet three benefits weigh against these threats to privacy. For a start, the autocrats will not have it all their own way. Smartphones are the vehicle for bringing billions more people online. The cheapest of them now sell for less than $40, and prices are likely to fall even further. The same phones that allow governments to spy on their citizens also record the brutality of officials and spread information and dissenting opinions. They feed the demand for autonomy and help protest movements to coalesce. A device that hands so much power to the individual has the potential to challenge authoritarianism.The second benefit is all those personal data which companies are so keen on. Conventional social sciences have been hampered by the limited data sets they could collect. Smartphones are digital census-takers, creating a more detailed view of society than has ever existed before and doing so in real time. Governed by suitable regulations, anonymised personal data can be used, among many other things, to optimise traffic flows, prevent crime and fight epidemics.The third windfall is economic. Some studies find that in developing countries every ten extra mobile phones per 100 people increase the rate of growth of GDP-per-person by more than one percentage point--by, say, drawing people into the banking system. Smartphones will remake entire industries, at unheard-of speed. Uber is a household name, operating in 55 countries, but has yet to celebrate its fifth birthday. WhatsApp was founded in 2009, and already handles 10 billion more messages a day than the SMS global text-messaging system. The phone is a platform, so startups can cheaply create an app to test an idea--and then rapidly go global if people like it. That is why it will unleash creativity on a planetary scale.By their nature, seminal technologies ask hard questions of society, especially as people adapt to them. Smartphones are no different. If citizens aren't protected from prying eyes, some will suffer and others turn their backs. Societies will have to develop new norms and companies learn how to balance privacy and profit. Governments will have to define what is acceptable.
