On Wednesday, the body of the last Nizam of <keyword id="6354552" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hyderabad" source="Orion">Hyderabad</keyword> will be laid to rest here along with many unanswered questions about his life, inherited riches and his life away from India. Described by some as the 'story of the decline of the grandest hereditary princedom', the recorded life story of Nawab Mir Barket Ali Khan Walashan <keyword id="125800" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mukarram-jah" source="Orion">Mukarram Jah</keyword> Bahadur, the titular eighth Nizam of Hyderabad, who passed away in Turkey on Saturday, is sketchy at best. Mukarram Jah, the Prince was proclaimed as the successor designate in 1954 by his grandfather and the Seventh Nizam of the erstwhile Princely State of Hyderabad Mir Osman Ali Khan. Since then he has been identified as the eighth and the last Nizam of Hyderabad. "For years I had read stories of the eccentric ruler of a Muslim state who counted his diamonds by the Kilogram, his pearls by the acre, and his gold bars by the tonne, yet who was so frugal he would save on laundry bill by bathing in his clothes," wrote John <keyword id="16082382" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zubrzycki" source="Orion">Zubrzycki</keyword>, the author of The Last Nizam: The Rise and Fall of India's Greatest Princely State, while describing Mukarram Jah. Mukarram Jah was born in 1933 in France. His mother Princess Durru Shewar was the daughter of the last Sultan of Turkey (Ottoman Empire) Sultan Abdul Mejid II. <keyword id="16082383" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prince-mukarram" source="Orion">Prince Mukarram</keyword> Jah was officially called the Prince of Hyderabad until 1971 when the titles and privy purses were abolished by the government, says senior journalist and a keen observer of Hyderabad's culture and its heritage, Mir Ayoob Ali Khan. Khan pointed out that Seventh Nizam made his grandson the successor to the gaddi instead of his first son Prince Azam Jah Bahadur. Therefore, Mukarram Jah succeeded as the eighth Nizam on the passing away of the last former reigning ruler of Hyderabad in 1967. After moving to Australia initially, for a good part of Prince Mukarram's latter half of his life, he had been residing in Turkey. "I had listened to improbably tales of a Darbar in the desert of Australia where an Indian Prince preferred driving diesel-belching bulldozers than riding in the howdah of an elegantly caparisoned, elephant.And I had heard rumours of a recluse living in Turkey who had arrived carrying two suitcases and a load of shattered dreams," the author John Zubrzycki wrote about the prince about their meeting at the latter's two-bedroom flat in Turkey. There is paucity of a record of the details of the modern day decline of the riches inherited by the Prince or even his grandfather. But, in his time, Mukarram Jah is never known to have taken kindly to anyone who recorded their lives in an undignified manner. According to Zubrzycki, when The Times ran a 1000 word obituary portraying the Seventh Nizam as a 'miser' and touched up on certain personal matters of his, "Jah shot back an equally long letter to the Editor. It was unjust to conjure up the image of a shabby man shuffling through his dream world, asserted Jah," writes Zubrzycki . Journalist Ayoob Ali Khan said people of Hyderabad had expected that Prince Mukarram Jah would do a lot of things, particularly for the poor, because he had inherited immense wealth from his grandfather who was the richest man in the world at one time. "However, it did not happen," he said. Mukarram Jah first married Princess Esra of Turkey in 1959. In an interview as told to Huma Bilgrami Latif published in Youandi.com, Princess Esra talks about her early married life in Hyderabad and how restoring inherited properties and palaces of family later became her passion. "I always wanted to do something for the city, but it was a bit difficult when I got married because my husband's grandfather was alive, and my life was very restricted back then. There was a certain way one had to behave, places one could go, and who one could see. After his death, however, we had the possibility to do things our way, but then we had enormous problems: the death duty, the tax was 98 per cent, etc." "Then our privileges were taken, and the land was taken; it was impossible to keep up one's dreams," Princess Esra is quoted as saying. "Later, I got divorced, and after 20 years, Mukarram Jah asked me to come back and help out in Hyderabad because everything was in a mess and there were big problems. When I came back, the whole place looked as if it was the loot of Delhi by <keyword id="12138556" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nader-shah" source="Orion">Nader Shah</keyword>. There was nothing left; everything was taken. It was terribly sad, and I thought to myself that I have to give something of the family back to Hyderabad." " It was our duty," the Princess is quoted as saying while describing her efforts to renovate and restore the Chowmahalla Palace and Falaknuma Palace. Decades after this interview was published, today, it is the same Chowmahalla Palace where Mukarram Jah's mortal remains will first be taken to after arriving here in a chartered flight. Jah's body would be kept at the Khilwat Palace from 8 AM to 1 PM on January 18 to enable people to pay their last respects. The burial would take place at the Asaf Jahi family tombs here, a statement issued by an office of Prince Mukarram Jah had said. As per his desire of being laid to rest in India, his children are scheduled to travel to Hyderabad with the mortal remains of the late Nizam on January 17, the statement added. Telangana Chief Minister <keyword id="80355" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="k-chandrasekhar-rao" source="Orion">K Chandrasekhar Rao</keyword>, who condoled the death of Prince Mukarram Jah, directed officials to conduct his last rites with the highest State honours in recognition of his social services in the fields of education and medicine for the poor as the successor of the Nizam. <ul><li>India and Pakistan are fighting for the rights of £35 million belonging to the <keyword id="797909" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nizam-of-Hyderabad">Nizam of Hyderabad</keyword>, in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. </li><li>The then Nizam of Hyderabad, late Nizam <keyword id="226736" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Osman-Ali-Khan">Osman Ali Khan</keyword>, had transferred 1,007,940 pounds and nine shillings to the NatWest Bank in London in 1948. </li><li>The Nizam’s descendents, Prince <keyword id="125800" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukarram-Jah">Mukarram Jah</keyword> and his younger brother Muffakham Jah, have joined hands with the government of India. </li></ul>India and Pakistan are heading for yet another clash over a dispute of around £35 million, <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/india-pakistan-clash-over-35-million-pounds-deposited-by-hyderabad-nizam-in-1948-in-uk-court-2203743.html">according to a report</a>. The case is underway in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. The trial which is being presided over by Justice Marcus Smith, is listed as The High Commissioner for Pakistan in the United Kingdom versus seven others, including the Nizam’s descendents, the Union of India and the President of India. The judgement from the court <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/india-pakistan-clash-over-35-million-pounds-deposited-by-hyderabad-nizam-in-1948-in-uk-court-2203743.html">is expected</a> in six weeks. Soon after the independence and formation of Pakistan, the Nizam of Hyderabad, late Nizam Osman Ali Khan, who then wanted to accede Hyderabad to Pakistan, had transferred his fortune to the high commissioner of Pakistan in Britain and that was then deposited with the NatWest Bank in London. The fortune was 1,007,940 pounds and nine shillings in 1948, which has since then grown into £35 million. India and Pakistan have since then been fighting for the rights of the fortune. The Nizam’s descendents have joined hands with the government of India in the legal pursuit for the fortune, further strengthening the case in India’s favour while Pakistan has been claiming the riches to be rightfully theirs. "His Exalted Highness Nizam VIII and his younger brother have waited decades to receive what their grandfather gifted them. Pakistan has blocked access for 70 years and we hope the recent trial will mean a final resolution at last," said Paul Hewitt, partner at Withers law firm, which is representing the eighth Nizam of Hyderabad, in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. The major question the court has to deal with is who exactly is the beneficial owner of the funds. It is to be noted that the Nizam himself had <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/india-pakistan-clash-over-35-million-pounds-deposited-by-hyderabad-nizam-in-1948-in-uk-court-2203743.html">reportedly</a> asked the NatWest Bank to return the funds, which were held back by the bank. The fortune was deposited into the London bank account of the then Pakistan High Commissioner Habib Ibrahim Rahimtoola.

The sitting candidate Asaduddin Owasi won the Hyderabad lok sabha seat with a margin of 2.8 lakh votes. This All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate secured a safe win, with no sweat as expected by many. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Dr Bhagvanth Rao and finished as a runner up just like last year. However, BJP redeemed itself in the twin city as its G Kishan Reddy won over Talasani Sai Kiran Yadav of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) by a margin of 62,000 votes. An anti-Modi stance The sitting MP Owasi, a well-known for his anti-Modi statements has managed to keep its legacy. Owasi invited ire in 2016 after he locked horns with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)’s Mohan Bhagwat. “I would never say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’,” said Owasi after Bhagawat said every Indian should chant it. Owasi had stood his ground even when Modi wave was at its strongest in 2014, though his BJP counterpart Dr Bahgavanth Rao came very close with over 3 lakh votes, while Owasi finished with around five lakh votes. Nizam’ legacy Historically, Owasis and their city-based political party, have maintained much larger margins over their runner-ups, even when TDP and Congress were at their strongest. In fact, his father has won the same seat seven times, keeping the Charminar constituency with a majority Muslim population within the Owasi family, which heads All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). AIMIM was founded in 1927 under the auspices of Nawab Osman Ali Khan to be a pro-Nizam party during the times when the power of princely states was dwindling in a British-ruled India. But they came to take over the city only in 1984, after breaking Congress’ stronghold in the city and the state. Twin dilemma Secunderabad’s mandate unlike Hyderabad cannot be predicted as easily. In fact, the city is notorious for choosing a different party each year. Things got even murkier after the septuagenarian Bandaru Dattatreya was denied a ticket from BJP to contest the election. It went to G Kishan Reddy who is tasked with overcoming Anjan Yadav from Congress and Talasani Sai Kiran Yadav from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS); to retain the party in the seat. Hyderabad and Secunderabad voters did not have it easy this time around. They had to choose between seven candidates in Hyderabad and five in Secunderabad. In 2019, over 30 candidates contested from Secunderabad!! In Hyderabad too, voters had 14 candidates to choose from. They came from unknown parties like Majlis Bachao Tahreek, Pyramid Party of India, Indian Christian Secular Party and All India Azaad Congress Party; along with a clutch of independents. With many candidates came fewer voters. This time around the city recorded a dismal voter percentage at 40%.

But an American and a Frenchman paired up to achieve this in their book ‘<keyword id="400044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Freedom-at-Midnight" source="Orion">Freedom at Midnight</keyword>’. It’s the story of India that many Indians know little about. For years, I have regaled many with the unbelievable anecdotes from the book, which is soon to be made into a web series. As we complete <keyword id="2177193" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="75-years-of-independence" source="Orion">75 years of independence</keyword>, I believe a brief summary of this epic is in order for we all need to know the history of how we got here today, breathing free in a country we can call our own. <div type="image" title="India at 75" msid="93508033" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;India at 75&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> A century and a half after Vasco da Gama discovered India, most of Europe had given up bland meals, and now pepper mills are on every dinner table. But India remained a free country only until the 1600s. That’s when Dutch traders decided to raise the rates of a pound of pepper by five shillings — a move that made a cartel of Englishmen receive an official sanction from Queen Elizabeth I to exclusively trade in all countries beyond the Cape of Good Hope. The company, called East India Company (EIC), also the world’s first company to issue equity shares – kickstarted a reign of evil, by a race which believed was ‘destined to govern and subdue’, according to Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre’s classic Freedom at Midnight. <div type="image" title="Freedom At Midnight by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre" msid="93508039" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Freedom At Midnight by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The wolf of this yet to be formed Wall Street was Captain William Hawkins, a seaman who was more of a pirate than an explorer. He soon found himself in the court of Jahangir, in an empire so vast and wealthy that his own Queen would have appeared to be the ruler of a provincial hamlet in contrast. Queen, Kipling and memsahibs EIC’s coffers filled but India, with its numerous territories and squabbles, would not let him hold on to their policy of ‘trade not territory’. But white supremacy is to prevail amongst ‘lesser breeds without law’ as Jungle Book writer Rudyard Kipling puts it. Even the British born writer believed that the right to rule Indians was placed on British soldiers by “the inscrutable decree of the providence”. The British shouldered it and region after region was lured by treasures if not treachery, weak and powerful kings won with weak enemies. The great Maratha Shivaji himself was known to have admired the British who fought for their honour, as he laid siege on Surat. Droves of young English men arrived in this strange land – with men in sagging dhotis and bare-armed women in sarees, and travelled the length and breadth of the country into villages with rations and letters that proclaimed their rights. And, they were all taught one principle - The English ran the country but they dwell apart. Memsahibs in India started running a very large version of Downton Abbey – with dinner parties that boasted of a servant per guest. They also set the tone for the Victorian era social seclusion – probably to keep their men away from the exotic temptations of the state. But it also made the British much different from many rulers that made India their home. Also, they were sending away taxes they collected from them back to the crown, as Indians starved. The British in India lived it up, served by coolies, and none were ‘better than Gunga Din’, a poetic character that saves an Englishman. They hunted tigers and killed ‘almost all’ cheetahs, the smallest of the big cats - which are now extinct in India, thanks to the Raj. They were having champagne in silver buckets and golfing, in style – golf arrived in India 30 years before New York. They also built the world’s highest golf course at 11,000 feet on the Himalayas. Almost a century after India became a British colony directly under the Queen’s rule, after the devastating Second World War, the country’s parliament voted to ‘leave the country’. George VI was sad that he had let go of a country he always wanted to visit but couldn’t. To ensure there was a smooth transfer of power that didn't lead to anarchy, he chose his handsome cousin, who was known as much for his charm as his military prowess. The former trait would serve Louis Mountbatten more than the latter, as he became the lord and the last viceroy of India, as he took over what his predecessor called, ‘Operation Madhouse’. <div type="image" title="Louis Mountbatten" msid="93508078" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Louis Mountbatten&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The new-age Buddha and Christ Elsewhere in another continent and another British colony, a young lawyer who was an utter failure in Bombay, landed in South Africa and to his own surprise found success. He profusely read Henry Thoreau and Leo Tolstoy and the Gujarati brain of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was working in wonderful ways. <div type="image" title="Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi" msid="93508085" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> When the British government irked him by closing Transvaal borders to India, he led a movement of Thoreau’s civil disobedience with over 2,000 people that included women and children. He added his own twist – non-violence and he brought it back to India. Now called Gandhigiri, his principles continue to inspire generations across continents. The man who took a vow of poverty, had held on to his Ingersoll watch for years until it was stolen when he was travelling in a train. He was moved to tears as he told this story with child-like pain to Lord Mountbatten, but his loss was short-lived. The man who stole it, returned it and begged his forgiveness – which was given with a hug and a chuckle. Gandhigiri had taken over India at the time of Mountbatten’s arrival. Mountbatten knew that this man who Winston Churchill sneered at, ‘as a half-naked fakir’ was not to be taken lightly. After all, Gandhi had already sent back Sir Richard Cripps without a deal, refusing UK’s offer during the war to rule India as a British dominion. Goat curd and surgical precision Mountbatten called it Operation Seduction and while he forged a great friendship with Jawaharlal Nehru, Gandhi was another soul altogether. He insisted on eating his own goat curd at the Viceroy House, took prayer breaks and insisted that India should remain one – keep the baby alive instead of cutting it into two. Jinnah, however, was all vanity, which was deeply hurt when he received fewer seats during the 1937 provincial elections. He demanded a Muslim state. India would be divided with surgical precision, he promised Mountbatten. The King’s cousin, the book says, dealt with him like a sailor rather than a statesman but Mountbatten knew that he could not move the unmoved, and most of Congress were in favour of two nations. Rooms full of rubies and a pen pistol But it took India’s iron man, Vallabhai Patel, to keep the rest of India intact and convince over 500 rajas, princes, nawabs and nizams as they called themselves to shift their allegiance from the crown to the nation. Stronger than the unity statue built in his honour, Patel continued summing up a case for the jury even after he was handed a note saying that his wife passed away. <div type="image" title="The Statue Of Unity" msid="93508178" hostid="261" sizebytes="162276" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Statue Of Unity&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Patel and the career bureaucrat, V.P. Menon, executed their operation seduction to gain control over men who were already seduced by sex, sport and the worst of all maladies - boredom. Most of them amused themselves with Lancaster pistols made of solid gold, rubies the size of pigeon eggs and working train sets on silver rails. The Jeff Bezos of that time, known to be the world’s richest, was the Nizam of Hyderabad, who had rooms full of precious stones eaten away by rats as the miser spent nothing and resorted to smoking the leftover cigarette butts of his departed guests! Most of the eccentric rajas sided with India – even Hari Singh of Kashmir, who wanted to be independent, was worn down by logic that a landlocked state would forever remain in a state of war. But the young Maharaja of Jodhpur, certain that his lavish life wouldn’t be approved by the Congress socialists, tried to go over to Jinnah’s side. But Menon’s watchful spies got wind of it, cornered him, and the Maharaja held a pen-pistol to the bureaucrat's forehead until Mountbatten confiscated it – and used it later to liven parties back home. Cursed by the stars Mountbatten was warned by the most popular astrologist of the time that August 15, 1947 was a ‘day cursed by stars’. He, however, chose sentiment over astrology – the date was the anniversary of the day Burma won against Japan, a war he was part of. It wasn’t just the viceroy, even Nehru and Jinnah did not see the bloodbath that followed. What stopped them from seeing what was to come was their own tolerance and atheism. Communal passions ran so high and so deep that right after the Union Jack came off the Viceroy house, Punjab and Bengal fell into a riotous rage – something a wily Gandhi always knew. That’s why the 78-year-old spent the midnight far away from the celebrations, spinning and lamenting the night India became independent, 75 years back.
