The remaining four — Akshay, Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma — will be executed on January 22 at 7 am in Jail Cell 3 in Tihar Jail. The same place where Afzal Guru, the terrorist behind India’s Parliamentary attack, was hanged. “The order will restore the faith of women in law,” Nirbhaya's mother, Asha Devi, told reporters outside the courthouse. "I am happy with the court's decision. The convicts will be hanged at 7 am on 22nd January; This decision will instil fear in people who commit such crimes," said her father, Badrinath Singh. Preparations for the executions have been well underway for over a month like special ropes are being brought in from Buxar Jail. The gang-rape that led to death In 2012, a 23-year-old paramedical student was gang-raped and brutally assaulted on the intervening night of December 16 inside a moving bus. After the abuse, she was thrown out of the vehicle at an isolated juncture. Though alive, she was brutally wounded. On December 29, she gave in to her injuries and passed way at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. Thousands of people marched on the street across the country to protest against the judicial system. The case led to the government setting up the Nirbhaya Fund — a ₹10 billion corpus which helps state governments facilitate women safety services. The government also introduced a Nirbhaya Act in April 2013, that mandates strict punishments for sex crimes.

The 17 year old victim has been set ablaze a day back, is still struggling for her life on a ventilator. She was on her way to the court to seek justice in a case after she was raped a year back. She has suffered 90% burns after five men which also included rape accused who were out on bail, attacked her. Agitated Indians are now demanding Hyderabad police-like justice for this girl too.

The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> upheld <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword>’s decision and awarded death sentence to four convicts in 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case which shook the entire nation. Supreme Court termed it as a barbaric incident in its order. The top court upheld the death penalty, “taking the serious injuries, the severe nature of offence committed by the convicts.” “Victim's dying declaration is consistent; it has been proved beyond doubt and corroborated. Nature and manner of the crime devastated social trust, falls in 'rarest of rare' category warranting death penalty,” stated the Supreme Court. The Apex Court said aggravating circumstances outweighed mitigating circumstances in the case and the offence created "tsunami of shock". In 2012, six people lured a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist and her male friend onto a bus in Delhi. The six culprits repeatedly raped the girl and beat both of them with a metal bar before dumping them on a road. The girl died two weeks later of her injuries. Four of the convicts- Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh-were sentenced to death while the fifth hanged, Ram Singh, himself in <keyword id="56350" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tihar-jail">Tihar Jail</keyword> in Delhi in 2013. The sixth one was released after three years of jail for being a juvenile. The four convicts had appealed to the top court to consider their death sentence.

Breaking News: Nirbhaya Verdict-Death for all 4 convicts, says SC

The Tihar jail authorities on Thursday told the trial court that none of the legal remedies of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape case are pending, as the court reserved its order on an application filed by the convicts seeking stay on their execution scheduled for 5.30 a.m. on Friday. Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana reserved the order. The four convicts have been trying to postpone the hanging on the pretext of pending legal remedies. "No legal remedies are pending as of now. Pawan and Akshay's second mercy was also not entertained by the President of India," Public Prosecutor Irfan Ahmad told the court. He said President <keyword id="6354561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ram-nath-kovind">Ram Nath Kovind</keyword> had entertained their first mercy plea on merits and it was given due consideration. Four convicts -- Vinay, Mukesh, Akshay, and Pawan are scheduled to be hanged by the noose on March 20 at 5:30 a.m. for brutally raping and murdering a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on December 16, 2012. In another manoeuvre to delay the ensuing death sentence, three death-row convicts, represented by advocate A.P. Nirbhaya convicts set to hang tomorrow as they exhaust every legal remedy

It was 3 a.m. on Friday when all the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape case were taken out from their barracks for a brief time. They were already awake as the "fear to be hanged" did not allow them to sleep. When the jail authorities asked them to finish their routine work and wear the new clothes provided by the jail authorities, they all broke down and fell at the feet of the jail staff. "It's not right to reveal their identity, but they were not in the right state of mind and wanted to talk to jail workers but could not say a single word. They even refused to have tea when it was offered," a <keyword id="56350" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tihar-jail">Tihar jail</keyword> source said. According to a Tihar headquarters source, "At around 5 a.m. the DCP of West District reached to meet these convicts. The Jail Superintendent introduced them to the DCP. Thereafter, they completed the <keyword id="65964" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Documentation">documentation</keyword> formalities." "After completing the documentation, they were taken out from their cells and their faces were covered with cloth," he added. An officer, requesting anonymity, told IANS: "They were not reacting to anything before their faces were covered but soon after they realised that they have reached the hanging room, one of them broke down and started crying and screaming. He almost fell down on the floor. But the jail staff took him to the hanging platform". Each of the convicts was accompanied by six wardens who took them to the hanging platform. When their feet were being tied, one of them started resisting but the security personnel restrained him. The convicts' hands were tied when they were taken out of their cells. Now, it was the time to deliver justice to Nirbhaya. All the convicts were supposed to be hanged at the same time but Pawan was the only hangman there to pull the lever, hence, the jail staff helped in pulling the other handles. Finally, at 5.30 a.m. when Jail Superintendent S. Sunil signalled that it was time to hang the convicts, Pawan and the other persons pulled the handles. After 30 minutes, the doctor who was present there, declared the convicts dead and their bodies were sent for post-mortem to <keyword id="114717" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deen-Dayal-Upadhyay">Deen Dayal Upadhyay</keyword> hospital.
