First International cruise ship 'Viking Mars' on Wednesday arrived in the coastal state of <keyword id="826" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="goa" source="Orion">Goa</keyword> with around 650 passengers and other crew members. Docked at the international cruise berth of Mormugao Port Authority, the cruise is scheduled to halt for a day in the coastal state. Mormugao BJP MLA <keyword id="183632" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sankalp-amonkar" source="Orion">Sankalp Amonkar</keyword>, after welcoming the tourists in the traditional way, said that the arrival of an international cruise will help the economy of the state. "It will help all stakeholders of the tourist area, not only from my constituency but also from others where these tourists visit," he said. He said that tourism activities had gone standstill due to the COVID pandemic, but now things are improving. "People faced loss during COVID, but now it seems there will be good business as tourists have started to come," he said. <keyword id="3606029" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amonkar" source="Orion">Amonkar</keyword> said that such international cruises should stay in Goa for a longer duration so the tourists can explore Goa. So, when market valuations are expensive, the monthly SIP installment will be half of the base amount. And if they become cheap, the installment would be twice the base amount. “The smart facility will help investors who are looking for an equity valuation-based investment approach to invest for their long-term goals. Equity markets will continue to be volatile. Smartness is in using this volatility in our favour. While the intent is there, industry experts believe more needs to be done, and the government needs to get the execution right. Production linked incentive (PLI) schemes remain vital to boost manufacturing. A <keyword id="48085" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Credit-Suisse">Credit Suisse</keyword> report dated December 11 states that PLI schemes could contribute up to 1.7% to the gross domestic product (GDP) by FY27. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is a production linked incentive?" comment="subhead" text="What is a production linked incentive?">What is a production linked incentive?</cmsannotation> As the name signifies, incentives under PLI schemes are offered based on the production, not investment. This incentivizes manufacturing units to produce more to be eligible for higher incentives. “There’s no incentive for setting up a (manufacturing) plant, but if your plant starts production, you get incentives. Establish supply chain clusters Supply chain clusters help optimize end-to-end operations as various components are close to each other. This will bring down costs, improve operational efficiencies, and help establish ancillary businesses, thereby creating an entire ecosystem. <keyword id="6485927" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="realme">Realme</keyword> India’s chief executive officer (CEO) Madhav Sheth explained that these capabilities cannot be built out overnight, especially when it comes to critical smartphone components like display, chipset and more. Labour and tax reforms One of the major concerns for industries remains labour and tax reforms. While the labour law remains complex with over 150 legislations, India’s tax laws need to be reformed to further bring down the burden on manufacturing activities. “The government should also make export income for smaller companies tax-free for the period they are in the scheme,” Mathews added, explaining the need to encourage exports. 3. Focused policies instead of spreading itself too thin While the <keyword id="8941225" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLI-scheme">PLI scheme</keyword> was initially aimed at attracting the top five mobile manufacturers, the Indian government is <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/technology/big-incentive-scheme-coming-for-wearables-hearables-iot-devices-and-drones-in-2021/articleshow/80099878.cms">reportedly</a> looking to expand it to include wearables, artificial intelligence and the internet of things devices. This could prove to be counter-productive. Ramanathan explained that instead of spreading itself too thin, the government should target specific sectors to make its policies more fruitful. He also pointed out that the government should encourage assembling electronic items initially and then gradually move on to promoting local production of critical components, instead of going all-in from the beginning. 4. Sustainability is also crucial Looking beyond just profits is also important, Ramanathan added, noting the risks associated with unsustainable development. With the effects of climate change already visible across the world, sustainable development should be a part of every country’s development goals. While this might increase manufacturing costs as companies will need to devise ways to reduce industrial waste, Ramanathan explained that industries and the country would come out ahead in the long term. The development marks the first victory of the <keyword id="19931558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Bharatiya Janata Party" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Bharatiya Janata Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. "I declare that Mukeshkumar Chandrakant Dalal, sponsored by the BJP, has been duly elected to fill the seat in the House from Surat parliamentary constituency," district collector cum election officer Saurabh Pardhi told media persons as he handed over the Certificate of Election to Dalal. Voting for all 26 constituencies in Gujarat is scheduled for May 7, but with the result of Surat seat already out, polling will be held on 25 seats. Except for Dalal, all 8 candidates in the fray from Surat- 4 Independents, 3 from smaller parties and Pyarelal Bharti of Bahujan Samaj Party- withdrew their nomination papers on the last day, as per the Surat district election office. Notably, the candidature of Congress' Nilesh Kumbhani from Surat seat was rejected on Sunday after the district returning officer prima facie found discrepancies in the signature of the proposers. The nomination form of Suresh Padsala, the Congress' substitute candidate from Surat, was also invalidated. The Congress on Sunday alleged that Kumbhani's nomination form was rejected at the behest of the BJP and said it would challenge the rejection in the High Court. "Surat has presented the first Lotus to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I congratulate our candidate for <keyword id="21392065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Surat-Lok-Sabha-seat" source="keywords">Surat Lok Sabha seat</keyword> Mukesh Dalal for getting elected unopposed," Gujarat unit BJP president C R Paatil posted on X (formerly Twitter). In the 2019 polls, BJP won all 26 constituencies in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
