Creativeland Asia launches a specialized research division, Crossbow Insights

<p><em></em></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Nistha Dube is a podcast host, author, and speaker with a neuroscience degree. </li><li>She's part of a number of Gen Zers who are putting purpose over a paycheck. </li></ul><p><em>This is an as-told-to essay based on an interview with Nistha Dube. </em></p><p><em>When Dube graduated from college just two months after COVID-19 hit the US, she was forced to reckon with the life she'd set herself up for. Her degrees in neuroscience and psychology led her to job offers in tech and consulting. But feeling unexcited to pursue those career paths, she declined the offers to instead build a brand she felt had meaning.</em></p><p><em>Dube, 25, is among a <a href="https://www.ey.com/en_us/consulting/is-gen-z-the-spark-we-need-to-see-the-light-report/gen-z-finding-meaning" target="_blank" rel="noopener">growing set of Gen Zers putting purpose over a paycheck</a>. She said that it's worth it to build a career that she doesn't feel burns her out — even if that means she doesn't earn as much as she would have in the corporate world.</em></p><h2><strong>As a Gen Zer, I never wanted a linear career path</strong></h2><p>I studied psychology and neuroscience at Virginia Tech. I was interested in those topics, but I knew I didn't want to take a traditional career path, such as going to med school. So a lot of college was about deciding what my unconventional career could look like. </p><p>That initially led me to tech and consulting, and for the first few months of 2020, I attended career fairs and interviewed at companies with that track in mind. </p><p>I got a couple of offers for jobs paying upward of $50,000. But all of this doubt kept creeping in — I was not excited about the opportunities and COVID-19 gave me time to actually think about what I wanted. </p><p>After finally admitting to myself that I wanted to build something of my own, the first step I took was creating content. I combined my studies in psychology and neuroscience to post content about mental health, mindfulness, motivation, and personal development. I started with YouTube, then moved to TikTok.</p> <p>As I posted more often about these topics and my journey to pursue a career related to them full time, other young people started reaching out to me for coaching calls. They asked about how to build their own confidence and feel less stuck in their own careers or school situations. </p><p>Those coaching calls were my first monetized services. Some clients just wanted a space to vent about their career frustrations, but others loved learning about the neuroscience behind each of the techniques we use, including neuro-linguistic programming. It's a type of thought-and-behavior technique people use that can help them reach a goal or desired outcome. Another technique is EFT tapping, which involves tapping acupuncture points with your fingers to aid in stress relief. </p><h2><strong>I don't make as much as my friends, but it'll be worth it in the long run</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Some Barnes &amp; Noble locations sell Nistha Dube's self-published book." height="877" width="1170" msid="99737049" hostid="261" sizebytes="185620"></div><p>Along with posting on TikTok, I also host a podcast and do speaking engagements. I've also self-published a book. While not all of those opportunities earn me money, it's about building this trifecta persona of "podcaster, author, and speaker" that will lead me to future opportunities. </p><p>I knew from the get-go that I'm playing a long-term game. I knew that I wouldn't be making the same amount of money as my friends in corporate jobs and that I would have to make sacrifices, including not living on my own and not traveling whenever I want. But I'm privileged that my parents are willing to support me in these early phases. </p><p>What keeps me going is the fact that the longer I play this game, the closer I get to financial freedom. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Sarah Negus is a spiritual coach who goes by title of the Modern Day Shaman. She combines shamanic techniques with modern psychology to help professionals better navigate the corporate world.</li><li>In her 30s working as a property developer, Negus realized she wasn't feeling fulfilled in her career or personal life. After a meaningful encounter with a shaman in Peru, she opened her own pilates studio and later began offering spiritual coaching.</li><li>Negus says it took several years for her to grow confident in the value she provides to clients and what she helps them achieve.</li><li>This confidence empowered her to raise her prices and expand the spiritual coaching side hustle into a full-time career.</li></ul><p>As a child, I always connected with the energy of other people and was considered the 'weird' kid at school because of my spiritual side.</p><p>In my late teens, I worked at an investment bank in a highly paid but highly stressful job, until I burnt out and ended up in hospital with a life-threatening throat abscess. I quit the rat race to focus on getting married and having my son, and later returned to work as a property developer. </p><h2>In my 30s, I became increasingly unhappy once again, realizing that I didn't feel fulfilled in my life</h2><p>It was at this time that I had a serendipitous encounter with a shaman in Peru — a woman who went on to become my spiritual teacher. I became her apprentice and spent several years training to become a shaman. At the same time, I trained as a pilates teacher and set up my own studio in the annex of my house, offering spiritual healing practices on the side. </p><div type="image" title="Sarah Negus with the shaman in Peru" height="315" width="471" msid="78480478" hostid="261"></div><p>After I broke my elbow in 2015, I was forced to close my pilates studio. At the time it felt like everything was over, but really it was the best thing that could have happened, because it meant I needed to stop viewing my spiritual coaching as a side hustle and start treating it as my full time career.</p><p>I shifted my mindset from being a pilates teacher who does spiritual healing on the side, to fully embracing my vocation as a shaman. This changed everything and people started coming to me to experience shamanic journeying, which in turn brought more and more referrals.</p><p>I've now worked as a spiritual healer since 2011 and adopted The Modern Day shaman title in 2014, providing spiritual guidance to clients across the world, blending modern psychology with therapeutic dialogue, shamanic journeying, and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), to help clients find a deeper meaning and purpose in their lives. </p><p>Here are three steps I took to grow my business to multiple six-figures.</p><h2><strong>1. I started viewing my side hustle as my full- time career</strong></h2><p>Today I charge anywhere from $790 for my six week online courses, to $9,500 for my 12 week 1-on-1 programs, or $34,000 for a year of 1-on-1 support as a private client. Instead of pricing by an hourly rate which directly corresponds to the amount of time I put aside for a client, I now price based on the value I provide to my clients. Because of this, my monthly revenue has increased over ten times compared to when I first started out.</p><p>I only take a maximum of 10 clients at a time, and currently have five year long commitments and the multiple shorter term clients. The six week online course is self study, and at the moment I sell between five and ten of these a month.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">2. I stopped trading time for money</strong></h2><p>When I started my business, I decided to test the waters by offering free spiritual coaching sessions online.</p><p>Looking back, this was a disservice to myself. My work had value and meaning although I didn't recognize this at the time. Without knowing, I was hanging on to 'money stories' that weren't mine — ideas that the rich are not nice, or money was evil, or money was hard to come by, all things my family used to say and believe. My family, peers, and culture had taught me that what I was offering wasn't worth enough to put a price on.</p><div type="image" title="Sarah Negus" height="3488" width="4651" msid="78480482" hostid="261"></div><p>When I began to believe in myself, I started to value my work and the price tag I put on it. I went from offering free sessions, to charging $65 per hour, which was much better, but I was still trading time for money. After a while I realized I would never be able to scale my business this way, because my time would always be capped. So I started offering programs and packages, and priced them based on the overall value the client was getting from having their life or business transformed.</p><p>The 12 week package initially cost around $2,000, and I raised it gradually to $9,500 as my confidence grew in the outcomes my clients were receiving, based on their feedback — usually a big uplift in productivity and turnover and profit in their business, life-changing decisions (like staying or leaving a marriage), as well as other intangibles like finding meaning and purpose.</p><h2><strong>3. I positioned myself as an expert within my field</strong></h2><p>In 2015, I launched myself as The Modern Day Shaman. I picked the title as a way to effectively describe what I do, while ensuring I stood out in the marketplace. Creating a personal brand was important to me as I knew that I needed to become visible and earn a reputation.</p><div type="image" title="Sarah Negus" height="2274" width="3024" msid="78480488" hostid="261"></div><p>I wanted people to recognize that I wasn't just another spiritual healer, so I focused on my branding and content to truly show people who I was and create that emotional connection. I do regular speaking gigs and I invest time in creating content for my social media channels, including my YouTube channel, where I share tips, insight, and advice. I turned my spiritual coaching side hustle into a 6-figure career — here are the 3 tips I swear by that made me successful

According to the WSJ, all of these schools reported larger year-over-year drops in business school applications, with this trajectory expected to continue as a result of student loan debt and international students hesitant to apply for fear of not being able to obtain work visas in the US after graduation. </p><p>I'm one of the people who, after careful consideration, chose to opt out of an MBA. After working in business development and marketing for years, I now own a successful brand strategy agency, making six figures and helping businesses identify the unique value they can provide to their unique set of customers. Here's why I decided against business school, and how I managed to replace a degree with my own kind of specialized learning.</p><h1>I opted out of business school for a graduate assistantship instead</h1><p>I hadn't necessarily been considering an <em>elite</em> MBA, but when I was trying to figure out what to do with my life in my twenties, it seemed like an MBA would help me connect some dots in terms of my personal interests and skill set. </p><p>I'd like to say that from the beginning I knew exactly what I wanted to do and charted a clear, efficient path for myself. But that's not what happened. I studied psychology in college at Kansas State University, took a job as a case manager for a teen pregnancy program, and then was accepted into a graduate program for mass communications at the University of Central Missouri - with a <a href="https://www.ucmo.edu/offices/graduate-education-and-research/graduate-assistantship/">graduate assistantship</a> that waived my tuition. </p><p>Prior to accepting the assistantship for my graduate program, I'd looked into some MBA programs, both online and in the city where I was living (Kansas City). From what I could gather, it seemed that it would be a very costly venture - an investment in the $50,000 to $80,000 range for a two-year program completed locally at a state university. I was on the fence when I became aware of the graduate assistantship opportunity. (In my research for MBAs, I'd also broadened my search into media production and mass communications.) </p><p>After being accepted into the mass communications graduate program, I couldn't justify paying for an MBA, even an online MBA, if I could get an MA for <em>free</em>. So, that's what I did, thinking I could fill in the blanks later. Books, library resources, and online classes helped me acquire the equivalent of an MBA, DIY-style.</p><h1>I put together my own kind of "DIY" MBA</h1><p>I estimate my spending was under $400 on resources for my DIY MBA over several years. </p><p>The first book I read in this process was "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Ten-Day-MBA-Step-step-Mastering/dp/0688137881">The 10-Day MBA: A Step-By-Step Guide To Mastering The Skills Taught In America's Top Business Schools</a>" by Steven Silbiger, which had categories on marketing, ethics, accounting, organizational behavior, quantitative analysis, finance, operations, economics, and strategy. These categories helped me define resources to seek out, specifically books (which I estimate I spent $120 on in all) and online courses. My favorite books include "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Balanced-Scorecard-Translating-Strategy-Action/dp/0875846513">The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy Into Action</a>" by Dr. Robert Kaplan of Harvard University and Dr. David Norton, "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Win-Strategy-Really-Works/dp/1491528796">Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works</a>" by A.G. Lafley, and "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Myth-Revisited-Small-Businesses-About/dp/0887307280">The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It</a>" by Michael Gerber.</p><p>Over the years, I audited (for free) online courses from Harvard, Yale, and Cornell on entrepreneurship, behavioral economics, business strategy, and game theory on <a href="https://www.edx.org/">edX</a>. I listened to a couple of <a href="https://www.thegreatcourses.com/">The Great Courses</a> on economics and history, which cost $84, or $14 a month for six months. I also took classes on NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming, which is a psychological approach that involves analyzing strategies of thought, language, and pattern of behavior to get inside the mind of your customer), entrepreneurship, and business coaching from a variety of instructors on <a href="https://www.udemy.com/">Udemy</a>, spending at max $50. </p><p>Two years of <a href="https://www.toastmasters.org/">Toastmasters</a>, which cost me $130 and included learning manuals, pushed me out of a nervous panic over public speaking, which I felt was necessary to communicate effectively. I forced myself to prepare and deliver at least one speech per month for two years, which was painful, but it got easier. </p><p>And for hands-on accounting training I used <a href="https://www.lynda.com/">Lynda</a> for free with my library card.</p><h1>My self-taught education helped me grow my business</h1><p>The specific elements I studied on my own helped me fine tune business development and brand strategy for small businesses. I've helped hundreds of small business owners over the last 15 years, and my unique approach to my "MBA" education helped me identify unconventional ways to apply the various things I'd learned. And I'm always learning. Because it helps me do my job better. </p><p>I heard a business coach years ago ask the question: "What does it take to be successful? Knowledge? Then why aren't all people with PhDs rich?" That made an impact on me. </p><p>So, what's the key to knowledge, from my experience? Action and application. Conversational marketing technologies like Voice Search Optimization (VSO) enable interactions between companies and customers that mimic human dialogue and do so at scale.<br /><br />Text and voice requests are significantly different. For example, the user will write "the best sushi in Mumbai", but he will say: "Where to eat delicious sushi?" There doesn’t seem to be much difference between the two statements. However, this greatly affects SEO. The online services implement voice query analysis accordingly and redo their content for them. This leads to the preference of natural language over keywords in web content and completely ditches overly technical language. In this realm of voice technology, one specific asset that builds a connection between computer systems and the human voice command is Neuro-linguistic programming. Often referred to as NLP, it’s a kind of a programming language that helps computers in understanding the underlying human tone, sarcasm, puns, and even deeper context clues like double meanings. <br /><br /><strong>Multi-experience</strong><br />Multi-experience replaces technology-literate people with people-literate technology. This involves an evolution from the traditional single point interaction to include multisensory and multi-touchpoint interfaces like wearables and advanced computer sensors. <br /><br />At present, immersive experiences that use augmented reality (AR), virtual (VR), mixed reality, multichannel human-machine interfaces and sensing technologies are what comprise the multi-experience. This trend in the future will be called an ambient experience.<br /><br />Let’s take the example of Domino’s Pizza, who with the inclusion of autonomous vehicles, a pizza tracker and smart speaker communications created an experience beyond app-based ordering. This kind of integration will be the way forward.<br /><br /><strong>Real-time Personalization</strong><br />In 2020, customer experience will overtake price and product as the key brand differentiator, according to Frost &amp; Sullivan. Success, therefore, lies in creating real-time personalized experiences — spanning marketing, sales and customer service — aimed at resonating deeply with customers so that they feel valued and appreciated.<br /><br />Brands and marketers will have to focus on real time personalization without invading the personal space on the end user. <br /><br /><strong><keyword id="6006107" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="augmented-and-virtual-reality">Augmented and Virtual Reality</keyword> Will Continue to Grow</strong><br />The rise of AR and VR spaces will create new, immersive advertising environments for businesses that can’t be simply skimmed over. With larger than life scope in social media, the practical applications of virtual and augmented reality are only going to increase in 2020. For a more bite-sized version of this, you can consider Snapchat’s newly launched AR Bar in Snap Camera. From scanning a math problem to get the answer or a product to see results on Amazon to scanning the sky to see whales swim over the horizon, or to watch butterflies emerge as you open your palm is putting the technology right at your fingertips, it locates contextually relevant Lenses whenever you point your camera at certain objects. <br /><br />It’s an emerging technology that will give brands an opportunity to come up with fun and interactive ways for promotion. Moreover, these platforms are making it easier for creators to start building their own lenses. For Instance, the new update for Snapchat’s Lens Studio now includes templates for augmented reality creators — including Land markers, which empower creators to build Lenses that can transform the world's most iconic landmarks in real-time. <br /><br />Thus, all in all, while the last decade saw digital grow, and digital becoming very important, the next one will have digital as the centerpiece. This is a decade which will redefine a lot of rules in advertising, with smarter marketing and smarter consumers. Digital Trends to look ahead in 2020

He also chairs the panel for Debrett's annual <a href="http://people.debretts.com/">People of Today</a> book, which calls itself "the ultimate biographical study of the UK's most successful and influential people."</p><p>Thompson has one key piece of advice that can be applied to business people, as well as celebrities. It involves neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), which he described as the "basis of hypnosis."</p><p>NLP is a term coined by self-help author <a href="http://richardbandler.com/">Richard Brandler</a>. Though there is no universally accepted definition of NLP, its is known as the science of understanding what causes particular behaviors and conscious mental states, and then influencing how the brain responds to different stimuli using this understanding. NLP often uses hypnosis and self-hypnosis to achieve these changes.</p><p>Thompson told Business Insider that ever since he left school at 16-years-old, he's used NLP to "get inside people's heads" and advance his own career. He said: "You have to be able to read people. You have to gauge what's in their mind."</p><p>NLP has been particularly useful in managing high profile celebrities, Thompson said: "It gives you great tools and methods to communicate. One of the attributes you probably need in this world is a high EQ (emotional quotient.) If you haven't got high emotional intelligence -empathy - you can't read signals, you're going to fall out with talent. Talent tends to be quite highly strung, they're difficult, because these people have got different qualities. You know emotional intelligence is very important."</p><p>The serial networker also gave three other useful pieces of career advice:</p><h2>1. Keep up with sports as an adult.</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>M&amp;C Saatchi Merlin</span></p><p class="caption">Thompson is also chairman of Surrey County Cricket.</p></div><p></p></div></div>On top of his other commitments, Thompson is also chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club.</p><p>He thinks that his involvement with the sport has actually been key to growing his own professional, as well as social, network.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I think the best networks I've seen come via your personal interests because they're very authentic and you get to meet everybody from every walk of life. Cricket is very sociable. You're with people all day. And I think cricket in particular has thrown up an amazing network for me. As a player, and ... as chairman."</p><h2>2. It's easy to look and go 'I just cant be arsed, I don't want to go.' But actually, you could have met somebody quite interesting."</p><p>However, the veteran talent agent does not go to events unprepared. He admitted that he researches the people attending beforehand, to work out who is worth speaking to:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Have a look online to find out what they look like, because they haven't always got a name badge on. It's always the person who looks the most unassuming who's the most interesting. So I'd memorize what they look like."</p><h2>3. When you make a mistake, compartmentalize it and move on</h2><p>When celebrities make mistakes, there is nowhere for them to hide.</p><p>Much of Thompson's job involves telling them how to move on when they screw up. This is his advice:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Put it in perspective. Because its you know, compartmentalizing things is a good way of managing anybody's life, whatever you do ... isolate it. Find a way, understand why you f----- up, or why what happened happened, get all the lessons you can from it, then draw a line. How the 'basis of hypnosis' helps the boss of David Gandy's talent agency get ahead

I am very interested in self-development and last year I took the Barret Values Centre personal-values assessment, which I had heard was a good tool to work out what is important and motivates you, as well as the areas that require development.<br />
 <br />
My results showed that my only fear-based value was ‘being liked.’<br />
 <br />
Upon reflection, I agreed that this was something that was holding me back. My company had scaled quickly from 20 to over 100 people in a short space of time and I was making difficult, often unpopular, decisions on a daily basis.<br />
<br />
<br />

Dick Costolo, who served five years as CEO of Twitter, said that “as a leader, you need to care deeply about your people while not worrying what they think about you”, but this was a balance I was finding difficult to manage at that time. I was second-guessing and qualifying myself too often and was distracted by worrying what people were thinking, rather than being able to focus solely on what had to be done.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Taking Action</strong><br />
 <br />
On a friend’s recommendation, I visited Fiona Nicolson, a cognitive hypnotherapist with experience working with business leaders.<br />
 <br />
Cognitive hypnotherapy differs from traditional hypnotherapy because it also draws on recent discoveries in psychology, cognitive theory and neuro linguistic programming (NLP). It works to unlock potential through pinpointing and positively changing the negative beliefs that can hold individuals back.<br />
 <br />
It appealed to me because it focuses on identifying and responding to the actual root cause of my reaction to situations rather than just generically treating the symptoms. I began to realise that my worrying about whether people liked me had arisen from a range of beliefs that I had accumulated through my life and experiences.<br />
 <br />
A huge percentage of our daily behavior is driven by our unconscious mind and the unconscious uses past experiences to give context to present situations and controls our behavior during times of strong emotional response.  Anxieties or worries in adulthood are mostly driven by the perceptions and beliefs established in childhood that we hold about ourselves and the world we live in.<br />
 <br />
It is very common for people to have a belief system that is in some way holding them back from reaching their potential. These belief systems can range from worrying whether people like you, to a strong fear of getting things wrong.<br />
 <br />
Strong fear can be paralysing – a fear of getting things wrong can manifest in not making decisions at all or an inability to delegate.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Changing Perspectives</strong><br />
 <br />
When we started the sessions, Fiona asked me to calibrate out of 10 how much I cared that people liked me – my answer was eight. We agreed we would be aiming to get it down to about four.<br />
 <br />
I believe that caring a certain amount about what people think about you is really important as a leader – being empathetic, open and sensitive to other people is how I like to manage my businesses – the key was to ensure that it never became a driving force.<br />
 <br />
Fiona explained that some negative beliefs or feelings should optimally be a level zero – like feeling not good enough. Other fears—for example, a fear of failure—can be counter-productive if it is high, but it can be useful and even motivational for some business leaders if it is around three or four.<br />
 <br />
The change was not instantaneous for me. Fiona had warned me that everyone is different in how they process the changes, and how quickly. For some the effects are profound; for others the difference is subtler.<br />
 <br />
However, over a few months I began to notice micro-changes in how I was feeling in certain situations.<br />
 <br />
When I was dealing with a relevant situation at work, I would actually hear a voice in my head saying, “Who cares what they think?” I found my head began to feel clearer because I was no longer being distracted by my perception of whether they liked me and what I was saying.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Lasting Impact</strong><br />
 <br />
After my sessions, I decided to roll out cognitive hypnotherapy as a company benefit for all of my employees in London. Everybody went with different issues, ranging from travel anxiety to fear of failure, low self-esteem and financial instability.<br />
 <br />
I believe that everybody is disproportionately held back by anxieties that may appear insignificant, but can have a huge effect on everything that an individual does. We should always be focused on removing friction, such as any type of anxiety, as a crucial part of unlocking potential in all talent.<br />

<p>A startup called <a href="http://treato.com/">Treato</a> has developed a platform that combs the Web for health-related discussions to create a Google-meets-WebMD for all of us.</p>
<p>The idea is that the healthcare industry is in need of a human voice. You can go to the doctor and get medical recommendations for a certain condition or ache, but Treato will help you get some raw feedback from your peers.</p>
<p>"[Let's say] I'm suffering from my knee, yeah I can go to an orthopedist, I've done that, completely useless, now what?" Treato CEO Ido Hadari told Business Insider. "What did this guy do, what did she do? Maybe they found something great at Walgreens to relieve the tension, maybe there's a great person in Chelsea who does acupuncture that can solve the problem for me. How are they managing this and when they got this initially what did they do? These are the types of insights patients are looking for."</p>
<p>Treato provides you with that information by scraping tens of thousands of sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and niche discussion forums for specific conditions. It uses its own neuro-linguistic programming technology to weed through the massive amounts of posts and pull out meaningful as opposed to anecdotal information.</p>
<p>The startup is selling the data to Pharma companies - nine of out of the top 50 use Treato - but it's making a curated subset available to the general public.</p>

<p>First it compares ratings for pain medications - Aleve gets the highest ratings. Then it lists common concerns with the drug, which stretch from numbness to depression to stomach problems. Then you can actually read what patients are saying about Advil across the Web - 11,678 of which are positive and 4,337 of which are negative.</p>
<p>If you search a condition like stomach pain, you'll get some interesting results as well. First it lists possible medication such as Prilosec and Nexium. Then it lists vitamins that are most frequently discussed with stomach pain. Next you can browse through related conditions and symptoms, and then you can see what people are saying about stomach pain across the Web.</p>
<p>"If you're looking for the clinical kind of traditional medicine, medically driven data sets, there's a whole host of them," Hadari said. "You won't get the human factor, you won't get the why, you won't get the color, what are their questions, what are they concerned about, what's working what's not working, what are the opportunities, you won't get they're switching behavior and why are they switching, you won't get how are they really using the drug, you're not going to get their interaction between them and their physicians. You're not going to get their financial considerations."</p>
<p>Treato wants to give you "a very detailed and accurate depiction of what does the real world looks like, not the textbook, the real world," Hadari said.</p>
