Nestle India’s Maggi might have to see some more downfall. The instant-noodles, which is badly affected due to lead and MSG controversy, may also lose Rs 2,000 crore brand tag this year. 
 There are handful of brands in FMCG industry that have reached Rs 2,000 crore mark and <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword> had even crossed it a few years back. 
 
But due to the recent controversy, Maggi could slip from the club and the negative image attached to the brand is having a rub-off effect on other Maggi products as well. 
 
Economic Times reported that the Rs 2k crore club was growing stronger with the inclusion of Lifebuoy, an over 100 year old brand, Surf, Wheel and Rin from Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Aashirvaad and Sunfeast from ITC, Tide from Procter &amp; Gamble (P&amp;G) and Amul Butter. 
 
Other brands that fall in the Rs 2,000 crore bracket include Horlicks, Fair &amp; Lovely, Colgate, Ghari, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Thums Up and Sprite, among others. 
 
A senior analyst from an Indian brokerage house told the financial daily that the high-consumption categories, the percentage spend of the consumer's wallet and competitiveness determines the size of the brand. 
 
For instance, ITC is a big brand in cigarettes as it has a dominant presence; diary, on the other hand, is a huge-consumption category. “Amul Butter, which is a dominant brand in the category, has become a Rs 2,000 crore brand this year. Its impactful advertising, where the spend is minimal (less than 1% of turnover), has helped the brand in achieving this milestone,'' R S Sodhi, MD, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, which markets Amul told ET. 
 
Even Maggi was for the longest period, the only player in the category. “For some brands it is very easy to touch Rs 2,000 crore or Rs 5,000 crore sales because of the category they are present in,'' the analyst told ET on the condition of anonymity. 
 
Maggi will certainly have to do rigorous campaigning to regain its lost ground in the country and past glory.

Maggi may lose out on the glory of being a Rs 2,000 crore brand

In the backdrop of Nestle’s Maggi fiasco, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed testing of other noodles, macaroni and pasta brands like <keyword id="411842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Top-Ramen">Top Ramen</keyword>, <keyword id="177230" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wai-Wai">Wai Wai</keyword>, etc. 
 
The food safety regulator has also called for testing of four variants of "Maggi Nutilicious Pazzta with tastemakers". 
 
"Various test results on Maggi and some other similar products have raised serious health concerns. In view of the same, it would be advisable to draw regulatory samples for similar products for which product approvals have been granted by the FSSAI...These samples should be sent to the authorised labs for testing," FSSAI 
CEO YS Malik said in letter to Commissioners of Food Safety in all states and Union Territories. 
 
The FSSAI has ordered Nestle India, ITC, Indo Nissin Food Ltd, GSK Consumer Healthcare, CG Foods India, Ruchi International and AA Nutrition Ltd for testing their products. 
 
CG Foods CEO GP Sah told news agency PTI, "Our brands meet all regulatory standards as listed by Food Safety and Standard Authority of India. We are not closed to any tests and will cooperate with authorities if required." 
 
It seems that the FSSAI is cracking a whip on all instant food makers after tests showed Maggi containing Mono Sodium Glutamate and excess lead. 
FSSAI has banned all variants of Maggi noodles terming them as "unsafe and hazardous" for human consumption.

After days of uncertainty and plummeting stocks, Nestle finally broke its silence on Friday and said Maggi was safe but still it withdrew the two-minute noodles from the markets citing that customers' faith was shaken. 
 
Nestle's global CEO Paul Bulcke said that they wanted Maggi noodles back on shelves as soon as possible, adding that they would look into the safety concerns, dismissing that they added MSG in the popular-snack. 
 
On the concerns of presence of lead beyond permissible limits, Bulcke said that the lead came from natural resources, like water, air, through which Maggi was made in India. 
 Regarding presence of MSG, the global CEO said they never added <keyword id="1836492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Monosodium-Glutamate">Monosodium Glutamate</keyword> (MSG) in Maggi and it was through environment and contact of other products, the glutamate was seeping in the packages. 
 
Nestle said in a statement that recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product led to an environment of confusion for the consumer. 
 
Although he said that according to tests conducted by them, the product was safe, he did not deny for any third party testing. 
 
“We are conducting independent third party tests on of Maggi noodles. We are confident that Maggi noodles will be back as soon as possible," he said. 
 
Nestle is withdrawing Maggi from sale in India citing "an environment of confusion for consumers". A food scare was also triggered over a domestic regulator's report that some packs of the popular snack contained excess lead. 
 
Over six states have banned Maggi noodles, Tamil Nadu becoming the first state.

Nestle claims Maggi is safe, product withdrawn off shelves to allay consumer fears

Nestle’s iconic noodle brand <keyword id="13633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggie">Maggie</keyword> seems to be knee-deep in trouble. The product has been accused of high lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG) content, which has adversely impacted its distribution. 
 
While we all know what has happened, it would not be wrong to ponder the impact of the controversy on the entire instant noodle market in the larger picture. Will the crisis have a ripple effect in the overall noodles market in India? Or are Maggie’s competitors actually gaining from the brand’s crisis? 
 “Well, it is a bad news for the entire industry. When Maggie gets embroiled in a controversy, questions are raised at all other packaged foods as well,” said brand expert <keyword id="175362" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harish-Bijoor">Harish Bijoor</keyword>, CEO of Bijoor Consults. 
 
He explained that the controversy will not only impact the instant noodle market but will also adversely affect other packaged food category. “People are going to question everything that is packaged-- be it your biscuits or cola or anything else,” Bijoor added. 
 Adman <keyword id="132751" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naresh-Gupta">Naresh Gupta</keyword>, managing partner, Bang in the Middle too noted that the instant noodle market will be adversely impacted by the crisis. “Maggi is the category, there is no noodle market in India, there is a Maggi market,” he asserted. 
 
However brand guru Jagdeep Kapoor, chairman and managing director of Samsika Marketing Consultancy, does not see the crisis negatively affecting the category in the long run. He believed that the noodles market in India has been growing and will continue to grow. 
 
“Consumers are sensible people. They choose the categories that benefit them and they choose brands which add value to their lives,” he averred. 
While most of us would like to believe that competition stands to gain from Maggie’s crisis considerably. However, experts believed otherwise. Bijoor did not mince words when he says that the crisis has also hit other players as trust in the brand has been lost and it is a scar on the brand that will remain forever. Ad guru Gupta too stated that competition would find it difficult to match up to the 30 year old brand, which enjoys a cult status in the market. 
 
“Other players will benefit but to a small extent, but overall the market will decline. There are many places where the only food available is Maggi and eggs, competing brands have a long way to go before they build that scale,” he explained. 
 
On the other hand, Kapoor is optimistic and said that consumers have become smarter over the years and will continue to buy brand they have faith in. “As long as the category they participate in, adds value to their lives and as long as the brand is able to build on brand trust, with pure intentions, the brand in the categories would grow.” 
 
According to market estimates, in 2012, the instant noodles market was pegged at nearly Rs 2,000 crore industry. The category has been growing at 25% per annum. And the major brands playing around are Nestle India’s Maggi, ITC’s Sunfeast Yipee, and Hindustan Unilever’s <keyword id="651250" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="knorr-soupy-noodles">Knorr Soupy Noodles</keyword> among others.

ITC's instant noodles brand <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Sunfeast+YiPPee">Yippee</a> has made the most out of the controversy that hit <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nestle">Nestle</a>'s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maggi">Maggi</a>. It will soon become a Rs 1,000 Crore brand.

"The controversy and confusion that prevailed adversely affected the whole industry. However, with our proactive inputs and innovative campaigns, we were the fastest to recover and then exceed our old sales levels," Rajesh added. 
 
The company's campaigns had focused on "world-class product and manufacturing processes", he said.

ITC's Yippee cashes into Maggi controversy, nearing Rs
1,000-crore mark

In what could be another blow to the credibility of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> <keyword id="13633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggie">Maggie</keyword>, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now testing samples of the noodle brand. According to an ET report, the company’s spokesperson confirmed the news. It should be that company had to recall its Maggie stocks from the market across India following charges of high lead and MSG content in the product. 
	 
	"We have been made aware that the FDA has taken samples of Maggi noodles manufactured in India from third-party importers' containers for testing, and we have asked the importers to advise us of the outcome of the FDA tests," the spokeswoman said in an emailed statement in the report. 
	 
	It should be noted that Nestle does not import, market or distribute Maggie in the US market directly and the product is available through third party. 
	 
	Nestle has now moved to the Bombay High Court to defend Maggie against the order from Indian Food and Drug Administration.

The instant noodles sales in India have crashed by over 90% a month after segment leader Maggi was banned. The current market is pegged at a mere Rs 30 Crores in place of the previous Rs 350 Crores. 
 
The key food processing industry companies are now worried with the category’s future. This might impact overall investment plans as companies face 'increased harassment from safety inspectors' a senior official of Assocham told ET. 
 "In the last one month the instant noodles category has suffered a massive drop in sales to about Rs 30 crore a month. Before the <keyword id="2878534" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="maggi-ban">Maggi ban</keyword> this category was around Rs 4,200 crore annually, which is about Rs 350 crore per month. There is a fear psychosis among consumers," the official said. 
 
Last month food safety regulator FSSAI banned Nestle's Maggi citing it as "unsafe and hazardous" for consumption after discovering excess lead and violation of labelling regulations on taste enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG). Nestle has recalled Maggi from markets.

Noodles market slumps 90% after
Maggi ban

Nestle’s Maggi noodles were found to be unsafe for consumption and the company was ordered to recall its noodles, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Health+Minister+JP+Nadda+">Health Minister JP Nadda</a> said on Tuesday. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maggi+">Maggi</a> noodles samples were found to be containing more than permissible limits of lead. "Samples of Nestle's Maggi noodles were found to be having more than the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm of lead and also violating the labelling requirements about presence of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Monosodium+Glutamate+">Monosodium Glutamate</a> (MSG),” PTI reported, citing Nadda’s written reply in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Rajya+Sabha">Rajya Sabha</a>. 
 
On June 5, an order was issued by the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Food+Safety+and+Standards+Authority+of+India+">Food Safety and Standards Authority of India</a> (FSSAI) directing <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> to recall its Maggi Noodles. The order was based on the test results taken from different states, confirming presence of lead beyond permissible limit, Nadda said. 
 
The FSSAI, on May 25 advised all the states and UTs to draw samples of the Maggi Noodles and get the same tested from authorised labs. 
 
The minister said that the FSSAI had also advised the Commissioners of Food Safety of all the states and UTs on June 8 to draw and test the samples of Noodles and allied products of other brands as well. 
 
He said that the implementation and enforcement of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 primarily rests with the state and UTs. 
 
FSSAI regularly takes up the issue of enforcement of the provisions of the act with the state authorities through written communications and interaction during the meetings of the Central Advisory Committee (CAC). 
 
The CAC also comprises the Commissioners of Food Safety of all states and UTs for effective implementation of the Act and the rules and regulations there under, he said. 
 
Nadda added that surveillance, monitoring, inspection, random sampling and testing of food products are undertaken by the officials of food safety departments of states and UTs to ensure compliance with the standards laid down under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, Rules and Regulations.

Government of India justifies Maggi ban. Says, it exceeded lead content and violated labelling rules

Despite finding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> safe after testing, the officials have refused to give it a clean chit. 
 
Samples of two-minute Maggi noodles from Goa were sent to a government-run laboratory in Karnataka for re-analysis and it was found that the instant noodles were safe for consumption. 
 
However, Director of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Salim Veljee, refused to give a clean chit. 
 
He said the negative result did not necessarily mean a clean chit for the company's product because of contrary findings made by other state and central government laboratories while testing the Nestle-manufactured noodles, which have been banned in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=goa">Goa</a> as well as across the country. 
 
"The samples of these noodles were subjected for a re-analysis of the said five Maggi noodle products at the Goa State Pollution Control Board laboratory at Patto, Panaji and the results of the analysis were found to be consistent with the findings of the Goa FDA Lab in declaring the lead contents to be below the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm and negative for MSG," Veljee told reporters. 
 
Goa had <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">banned sale of Maggi</a> in June 8 and several tonnes of Maggi noodles were destroyed after tests in state-run laboratories across India revealed that the popular snack had excess amounts of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MSG">MSG</a> and presence of lead. 
 
On the instructions of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI)</a>, which described the tests conducted in Goa as not up to the mark, new Maggi noodles samples were then sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysuru, Karnataka for another round of tests, which have only now confirmed the Goa FDA's results. 
 
Veljee added that the CFTRI reports re-confirmed the consistent analytical results findings of the State FDA Goa laboratory, in which all the said five samples of Nestle's Maggie conformed with the Food Safety and Standards Rules/Regulation 2011. 
 
Lead in all the five samples was "reported to be well below the permissible limit as well as negative for the MSG in the said samples, which analysis was performed separately on the noodles and taste maker", he added.

Maggi is safe to eat but no clean chit yet

For the last few months, Maggi noodles were having a tough time in India. Having been dragged to the court, a blanket ban for allegedly over-using lead and then a mass incineration in cement kilns, Maggi’s misfortune lasted for quite some time. But now, the ban had been lifted from the instant noodles, and guess who is deconstructing the Maggi noodle case now? Harvard Business School’s India Research Centre it is. 
India Research Center of Harvard Business School (HBS), which largely dwells on the missteps that led to the product withdrawal, will be working on a case study on one of the country's biggest food recalls. It has been put on a fast-track basis and could be ready in about a month, against the more typical nine months or so that it takes to wrap up one of these, says an Economic Times news report. 
 
Earlier, Jaipur Literature Festival and Mumbai’s Dabbwalas were also a part of HBS research. However, these two were unqualified success and Maggi drew more attention for exposing Indian system’s many faults and triggered harsh criticism of the regulator's crackdown by the government that runs it. On top of that, the judiciary poked holes in the manner in which the matter was pursued. Nestle India denied it had been approached for a case study, informs the news report by the financial daily. 
 
"As a matter of policy and in fairness to the companies that work with us, we do not comment on cases until they are officially published and entered into the Harvard Business School case collection," Brian Kenny, HBS chief marketing and communications officer, said in an email response to the ET. "So I cannot provide you with any insight into cases that are currently in progress." 
 
According to information available with the ET, HBS has approached key stakeholders and top food companies for their views on the issue. "We have been approached for comment on the Nestle Maggi mess," a top official, on condition of anonymity, told the ET. 
In last few months, food regulators of 7 countries, including the US, UK, Singapore and Australia, have concluded that India-made Maggi noodles are safe for consumption.

Harvard’s case study on Maggi coming soon?

Nestle’s crisis isn’t yet over. Though the Swiss food products company has been trying hard to make things fall on the track, trouble seems to be catalysing every other day. First it was the ban on Maggi instant noodles and now the government has claimed damages of Rs 640 crore from Nestle India in the country's top consumer court. The crimes refers to Maggi’s misleading advertisements that has caused damage to consumers. 
 
This is the first class action suit filed with the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), consumer affairs ministry officials said. "Government can file a case on behalf of consumers. So we have filed a class action suit today (Tuesday) in the NCDRC," a senior official said. 
 
Class action involves filing of a suit on behalf of a large group of people. The NCDRC, where the suit has been filed, usually handles complaints filed by consumers. But the law has a provision under which both the Centre and states have powers to file complaints, according to a PTI report. 
 
Officials said that the action was in the interest of Indian consumers, as Nestle had allegedly indulged in unfair trade practices, false labelling and misleading advertisements about the noodles. 
 
The government action follows the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's controversial decision to ban Maggi noodles as some tests showed high level of lead and no appropriate label declaration of monosodium glutamate, commonly known as ajinomoto. Some tests in India and abroad subsequently showed that the noodles were safe. The commission will now hear various parties on the matter, said one of the officials. 
 
On Tuesday, food and consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan cleared the proposal to move the consumer forum. Nestle has already challenged the tests in the Bombay High Court and found support in some quarters of the government. 
 
Health minister JP Nadda told Parliament that "samples of Nestle's Maggi noodles were found to be containing more than the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm of lead and also violating the labelling requirements about presence of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)".

After burning up Rs 320 crore worth Maggie, Govt seeks damages worth Rs 640 crore from Nestle India!

The Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>) along with several states banned <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>'s <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> instant noodles in June, but the company did not get some of the test reports based on which authorities banned the popular noodles in the country, a company executive told the Economic Times. 

	Moreover some of the reports were not shared with Nestle before the announcement of the ban and they have now started trickling in, he added. 
 

	A company spokesperson revealed that no test reports were sent to it before June 5, 2015 when the ban was announced, except one from a Kolkata laboratory for a single sample of Maggi noodles sent by the Uttar Pradesh FDA in April. 
 

	"...and for that report, we had made our representation on the improper testing procedure," the spokesperson said in an email, responding to questions from ET. 
 

	The ban proved to be detrimental for the company. Maggi raked in over Rs 2,000 crore in annual revenue for the company. While that has stopped now, it spent Rs 320 crore to recall the product. 
 

	Global valuation consultancy Brand Finance estimates another Rs 1,270 crore in brand loss. Nestle claims it did not get a chance to explain its stand before FSSAI and state authorities that banned the product alleging excessive levels of lead in it and mislabeling on the pack. 
 

	According to industry experts, it was unfair not to share the test reports with the company before taking such an action. 
 

	Moreover, the delay in sharing results raised questions on the test procedures, since the UK, Singapore and Canada have found Maggi imported from India safe to eat. 
 "The way the matter played out was unfair to Nestle. The company wasn't given a chance to prove themselves," said <keyword id="2867937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashwin-Bhadri">Ashwin Bhadri</keyword>, chief executive at <keyword id="1459500" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Equinox-Labs">Equinox Labs</keyword>, which specialises in food testing and works closely with FSSAI on food safety compliance. 

	"Unfortunately, the issue isn't just about Maggi anymore. The controversy has had a global impact and the world is looking at India brands through the scanner,” he added. 
 

	Nestle executives raised the issue at a meeting they had with FSSAI officials on Wednesday. 
 

	An FSSAI representative present at the meeting said ideally the company should have received a letter informing it about the product not clearing the tests done and the reports of the tests should also have been shared with it. 
 

	Nestle announced that it was withdrawing Maggi noodles on June 5. But, on the same day FSSAI ordered the company to recall and stop manufacturing the product. 
 The company later approached the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> to seek clarity on the interpretation of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Foul play with Maggi? Nestle says FSSAI didn’t share test results with it

After Canada, the British food regulator has declared <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>'s <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> noodles made-in-India to be perfectly safe for consumption. The food regulator has tested the tastemaker and the noodles separately like its Indian counterpart. "None of the products tested in the UK so far has given the FSA any indication that EU (<keyword id="6355110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="European-Union">European Union</keyword>) maximum limits have been exceeded," the Economic Times reported, quoting a <keyword id="2937366" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="UK-Food-Safety-Agency">UK Food Safety Agency</keyword> (FSA) spokesperson. 

	"Some of the samples tested consisted of the noodles and flavour combined and others have been tested separately. Where they have been tested separately the levels of lead reported in the flavouring have not given cause for concern," the spokesperson added. 
 The <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food-Safety">Food Safety</keyword> and <keyword id="179673" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Standards-Authority-of-India">Standards Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>), which banned Maggi noodles in June, didn't respond to queries regarding the FSA statement. 

	Due to the Maggi ban, many companies have withdrawn instant noodles from shops, uncertain about regulatory action, while many costumers have stopped buying packaged snacks. 
 

	However, the UK FSA spokesperson said the risks to consumers from lead in food relate to "long-term exposure from the whole of the diet". 
 

	Meanwhile, the permissible lead content is expressed differently in the two countries - 0.2g/kg in the UK and 2.5 ppm (parts per million) in India. 
 

	Besides the UK, four other countries where made in India Maggi noodles were sent have declared the product safe. These are Canada, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. 
 

	Nestle said there is no difference in the noodles meant for export and for the Indian market. "The noodles made for the export market are produced on the same manufacturing lines as those for the Indian market at our factory in Bicholim," the company told ET in an email. 
 

	The company said it follows the same quality standards everywhere in the world - in India, in the US, in the EU, everywhere.
 

	There needs to be greater clarity on the rules in India, said RK Bansal, former director at the food processing ministry and a member of the committee that formulated the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. 
 

	"There are no guidelines prescribed in the regulations unfortunately," he said. "Due to lack of clarity, Maggi noodles can be treated as one product and the tastemaker can be treated as a different product. Since there are no set guidelines, it is totally up to the analysts in laboratories what they want to do and each analyst may have a different take on this." 
 

	Moreover, the British regulator said it didn't test for monosodium glutamate (MSG) content because this is allowed under EU rules. The Indian watchdog had found fault with Nestle over the Maggi noodles packaging bearing a 'No added MSG' message.
