US Space Command <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-tracking-uncontrolled-chinese-rocket-due-crash-may-8-2021-5">had been tracking</a> the rocket debris, an about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-long-march-5b-rocket-parts-may-rain-down-2021-5">22.5-ton cylinder</a>. </p><p>Models showed the space junk landing anywhere from North America to Africa, although most experts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-long-march-5b-rocket-parts-may-rain-down-2021-5">expected it to land</a> in an ocean. </p><p>On Friday, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, said the country's space agency was tracking the re-entry. </p><p>"To my knowledge, the upper stage of this rocket has been deactivated, which means that most of its parts will burn up upon reentry, making the likelihood of damage to aviation or ground facilities and activities extremely low," he said, according to <a href="https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/mfa_eng/xwfw_665399/s2510_665401/t1874090.shtml">an official transcript</a>.</p>

In the last 31 years of living, I wish there were a few key lessons someone taught me as I was growing up.<br />

Here are the 10 things I felt like nobody told me about adult life:<br />

1. <strong>The most valuable currency in the world is <keyword id="6360866" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="time">time</keyword></strong><br /> <keyword id="6354840" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="money">Money</keyword> is valuable. Time is even more valuable.<br />
<br />
Time is finite. Once you spend it, you cannot earn it back.<br />
<br />
Use money to help you find more time. Time with your friends, family and loved ones.<br />
<br />
One of my family friends spent most of his life saving every single penny that he could so that he could finally live his dream life.<br />
<br />
One day, he was involved in a car crash. He didn't survive.<br />
<br />
Appreciate the time that you have now.<br />
<br />
2. <strong>Sometimes only you can help yourself</strong><br />
Having a great support system of friends and family is absolutely critical to your well-being and success. Invest your energy and time with the people that love and support you and make you happy.<br />
<br />
Also recognize that sometimes only you can pull yourself out of the darkness.<br />
<br />
When my second startup failed, I remember feeling absolutely terrible one night as I laid in bed looking at the ceiling. I felt like I had failed as a person. Eventually, over time, I realized that I couldn't keep moping around. So I got out of bed and went for a run. I began to read books (like "Zen and Inner Peace") to help clear my mind. And eventually, I convinced myself that I would give it another try.<br />
<br />
And guess what? It worked. I'm on my third startup now (CEO Lifestyle) and hit 1,500 subscribers in just three months.<br />
<br />
3. <strong><keyword id="92066" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Empathy">Empathy</keyword> is the key to <keyword id="3934385" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Connecting-with-people">connecting with people</keyword></strong><br />
Once, my sister called me to talk about a tough situation. I didn't have an answer to the problem, so I said, "What do you want me to do about it?"<br />

And she said, "Nothing, I just want you to listen to me, that's all."<br />
<br />
That's some of the best advice she's ever given to me.<br />
<br />
Most of the time, we don't have a clue as to what the right answer is. And that's OK. What's more important is that you understand the other person's perspective and feelings. That's how you connect with people.<br />
<br />
Learn to deeply empathize. It'll make you a better person.<br />
<br />
4. <strong>You really don't need that pizza slice at 2 a.m.</strong><br />
Put it down. Now. Your body will thank you five years from now.<br />
<br />
Wait, is it a BBQ chicken pizza? OK, maybe just one bite ...<br />
<br />
5. <strong>Drinking is overrated</strong><br />
When I was younger, I used to get so excited to meet with friends to drink during the weekend.<br />
<br />
Work is over, time for happy hour!<br />
<br />
And then I realized, it's actually not as fun as I thought. Sure, it's great to bond over these experiences, but are the experiences actually that great?<br />
<br />
When I drank, I began to realize that it's (obviously) harder to remember conversations, sometimes the person you're speaking to isn't even coherent and ultimately it doesn't end up feeling like quality time. To top it off, there are the hangovers.<br />
<br />
Do I still have a drink socially every now and then? Sure, but it's really rare now for me.<br />
<br />
I love having a sober, fun, witty, genuine conversation with someone and being able to remember it perfectly weeks later.<br />
<br />
That feels like a real connection to me.<br />
<br />
Think about it this way, if people are only having fun with you when drinking is involved, do they really like you for who you are?<br />
<br />
6. <strong>Your career success is heavily tied to the value you provide</strong><br />
I get people asking me to review their résumés pretty often. Which is funny, because I wrote a book called "The Resume Is Dead."<br />
<br />
Anyway, one person asked me to take a look. So I did. And what I saw on his résumé is something I see all the time.<br />
<br />
A lot of people write out the responsibilities of their work in their job experience.<br />
<br />
Very few people write out the results.<br />
<br />
Sure, you might have created a new product line at the company, but why does that matter?<br />
<br />
Always remember to show the value of your work. This is very often tied to the success of your career.<br />
<br />
I bet you want some specific examples, don't you? OK, I'll give you one:<br />
<br />
Example 1: Created a new mobile app for Company XYZ.<br />
<br />
Example 2: Created a new mobile app that increased customer acquisition by 3X and increased customer satisfaction by 75% for Company XYZ.<br />

Which one is more compelling to you? Thought so.<br />

7. <strong>Love is a broad spectrum</strong><br />
Love is a commitment. Love is being there for someone when things go south. Love is making adjustments and compromising. Love is realizing that it's not just about you. It's mutual. It's about helping each other discover happiness.<br />

Sometimes love means letting go.<br />
<br />
Love is a broad spectrum. Explore it and define what it means to you.<br />

8. <strong>You can lead with or without a title</strong><br />
Companies put titles in place so that people feel like they are progressing in their career. What most people don't realize is that you can lead with or without a title.<br />

"I have this great idea but I'm not in a position of power to make it happen!" said almost everyone I've ever met.<br />
<br />
Learn to be articulate. Learn to be persuasive. Learn to sell ideas effectively. Learn to get buy from stakeholders. The title doesn't do that for you. You do that by stepping up your skills.<br />
<br />
Stop worrying about the title. Start leading.<br />
<br />
The title will come naturally.<br />

9. <strong>Most paths aren't linear</strong><br />
What works for someone else may not work for you. Every single one of us is unique after all.<br />
<br />
When I was in college, I saw a lot of friends go into finance. That sounded like a great idea! I could make a lot of money right after college in investment banking, have a stable career and live the American Dream.<br />
<br />
One problem: I was terrible at finance. I even failed an introductory economics course. It was clear I sucked at it.<br />
<br />
So I thought about what my skill sets were.<br />
<br />
I'm passionate (Think "Tony Robbins"). I work hard. I love talking with people. And I want to help others.<br />

So I went into sales. I never would have guessed this is the career I would have gone into. Most of my friends became doctors, lawyers and financial analysts.<br />

Wang was a key player in US economic negotiations under former president Hu Jintao, and was named as one of the most influential people in the world by <a href="http://content.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1894410_1893847_1893846,00.html">Time magazine</a>.</p><p>As a trusted confidant of Xi, Wang most recently led the country's anti-corruption unit, overseeing punishments for 1.5 million officials, and served on the Politburo Standing Committee, China's highest decision-making body.</p><p>And while the position of vice president has historically been seen as a largely symbolic role, experts speculate that Wang's past experience and widespread influence could dramatically increase the role's scope. </p><p>Jian Zhang, an expert on Chinese <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> at the University of New South Wales, told Business Insider that while the vice president of China historically does not play a significant role in global affairs, Wang's appointment may completely alter the role's definition. </p><p>"The vice president position gives Wang the flexibility to manage a range of challenging issues, both domestic and foreign." Wang has been part of economic negotiations with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and once received a <a href="http://en.people.cn/90001/90783/91321/6712908.html">basketball as a gift from former President Barack Obama</a>.</p><p>Jian agreed that Wang is seen much more favorably in the US than President Xi in the current climate. </p><p>"Wang's straightforward approach to negotiations is more easily accepted by the US, and is respected by US partners," he said.</p><p>Although it's unlikely Wang alone can prevent an impending trade war between the two global powers, Wang's role will be crucial.</p><p>"Wang is considered an expert on US trade talks. China's new vice president is the country's best hope for avoiding a trade war

He is now the CEO and managing partner of Fiamma Partners, an investment and development company.</em><p>It's been 21 years since I witnessed one of the most unprofessional acts from an NBA prospect. About a month before the 1996 NBA Draft, I was the general manager and team president for the Dallas Mavericks and invited five lottery picks to come down for individual workouts.</p><p>We planned a standard schedule for each of them - an hour worth of basketball drills and then a series of meetings with our front office, head coach and select assistants. We had the ninth overall selection in the draft that year, so for many prospects, this was one of the biggest job interviews of their lives.</p><p>Unfortunately, one player - who shall remain nameless - didn't have that sense of urgency and showed up an hour and 20 minutes late. Can you believe it? No advance warning, nothing. If this was a regular business and a candidate was that late for an interview, I'd tell him not to bother. Needless to say, we removed that prospect from our draft board.</p><p>While that was an easy decision, evaluating the next cornerstone of your NBA franchise is challenging. For the most part, everyone on your draft board can jump high, run fast, score the ball and is the most talented player on their college team.</p><p>But how do you distinguish the next Dirk Nowitzki from the next Darko Milicic - two European-born players with drastically different careers?</p><p>What Don Nelson taught me, as we scouted NBA draft prospects, was that we shouldn't just analyze their physical talent. We needed to evaluate their work ethic, maturity, mental toughness and coachability. We wanted players who were committed to developing their games, not players who were complacent with their talent.</p><p>I first adopted that managerial approach back in my early days as a young businessman. I remember sitting in meetings and discussing employee management, when a fellow worker had an interaction that is seared into my memory bank to this day.</p><p>"What kind of people should we go out and hire?" the fellow worker asked, with his hand raised.</p><p>"Hire people that have had a history of winning their whole lives," the senior executive responded.</p><p>About 30 seconds later, my teammate raised his hand again and asked, "What if we run out of people that have a history of winning?"</p><p>"Then find people that absolutely hate to lose," the senior executive responded, sharply. By the way, that senior executive was the great businessman Ross Perot.</p><p>That management philosophy has influenced every hire I've made in business, politics and sports, especially when it came to Dirk. Before we traded for him at the 1998 NBA Draft, the league had its concerns. After all, he was a youngster from Germany that would seemingly struggle to assimilate to American culture, let alone the NBA's style of play.</p><p>But man, the kid seduced us with his work ethic. His pre-draft workouts sold us and it eventually paid off. Despite a rough first two years with the Mavericks, Dirk devoted himself to expanding his game and adjusting to the physicality of the NBA. Nearly 20 years and 30,000 career points later, he has established himself as one of the greatest players in NBA history.</p><p>Of course, there are always exceptions to the draft equation - take Lonzo Ball. For all his positives, I'd be hesitant to draft him because of the sideshow that his father, LaVar, brings to the table. I respect LaVar's love for Lonzo as a father would and I do not question his loyalty to his son, but his flamboyant comments could be detrimental to an organization and affect team chemistry.</p><p>In the grand scheme of things, though, there are far worse offenses. Each year, you interview a few prospects with checkered pasts - who were either arrested in college or had legitimate off-the-field issues - that require extra vetting. If a prospect had a history of underachieving and making mistakes, we usually removed him from the draft board.</p><p>Other times, we spent time with a player's family members, friends, college coaches, high school coaches and even opposing coaches to gauge his maturity, family values and ability to avoid distractions. Sometimes, a prospect could be a very good kid that made one wrong decision at the wrong time. When it's warranted, I'm a firm believer in second chances because we must remember all young men make mistakes.</p><p>At the end of the day, even with the best scouting in the country, there are variables that you just can't control. Throughout my Mavericks career, we drafted superstars like Dirk, serviceable contributors like Samaki Walker, and even recruited the first Chinese-born NBA player Wang Zhizhi, who ultimately couldn't play in the NBA.</p><p>The unpredictable nature of the draft makes the process so exciting and first-timers like Magic Johnson are in for a treat. But Magic is more prepared to be President of Basketball Operations for the Lakers than anyone I can think of in NBA history.</p><p>As for prospects like Josh Jackson, Markelle Fultz and De'Aaron Fox? Former Mavericks president and GM explains the risks and rewards of evaluating NBA talent

<p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Motivating yourself to do stuff is hard.</p><p class="p1">When it's just you on your living-room floor, it's tempting to do a few push-ups and quit, even though you said you'd do 20. And when it's Saturday morning and you're supposed to be working on that novel you said you'd write, it's easy just to… not.</p><p class="p1">Over on Quora, there are more than 100 potential solutions to this problem, included on the thread, "<a href="https://www.quora.com/Self-Improvement-How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard-1">How can I motivate myself to work hard?</a>"</p><p class="p1">Below, we've rounded up some of the best tips and strategies on there. Read on and find out how to give yourself a kick in the pants when you need it most.</p><h2>1. Change the way you talk to yourself</h2><p class="p1">Quora user <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard/answer/Bhaskar-Bagchi">Bhaskar Bagchi writes</a> about being a success seeker, as opposed to a failure avoider. It's an idea attributable to a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sxpKhIbr0E">TEDx talk</a> by Scott Geller, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Virginia Tech.</p><p class="p1">In the talk, Geller says finding self-motivation is about reframing the way you talk to yourself. For example, if you're a student, do you go to class so you don't get kicked out of school (i.e. failure avoidance)? Or do you go to class so you learn more and get closer to your career goals (i.e. success seeking)? Chances are, you'll be much more motivated to perform well in the second scenario.</p><h2>2. Stop comparing yourself to others </h2><p class="p1">When you feel like you're falling behind on your goals, it's tempting to look around at all the people who seem to be achieving theirs.</p><p class="p1">But that tendency will only undermine your confidence and your ability to make progress, <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard/answer/Micha-Kaufman">says Micha Kaufman</a>.</p><p class="p1">"A case of the Joneses is about the best way to make you feel like you're worth nothing," he writes. "When such comparisons enter your head, recognize that these are just negative thoughts and let them pass."</p><p class="p1"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/comparing-yourself-to-others-is-pointless-2016-6">Research suggests</a> another reason why comparing yourself to others isn't a great idea. We're notoriously poor judges of how other people are feeling, meaning we think that everyone else is happy all the time and we're the only ones struggling, when in fact other people are probably in the same boat.</p><h2>3. Understand your purpose </h2><p>"Find your why," <a href="https://www.quora.com/Self-Improvement-How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard-1/answers/14700101">says Nelson Wang</a>. "If you don't know what it is, create it."</p><p>Research supports Wang's idea. <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0749597806000641">One study</a> found that call center employees at a public university performed significantly better when they met students who had benefited from donations to the school. In other words, learning about the potential impact of their efforts motivated them to work harder.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>4. Keep a daily diary </h2><p><a href="https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard/answer/Gerard-Danford">Gerard Danford mentions</a> research by Teresa Amabile, Ph.D., a professor at Harvard Business School, which found that making even a little bit of progress can be tremendously motivating for workers.</p><p>That's why it helps to record your progress along the way - for example, a phone call you made to help secure a sale. That way, you can look back at the end of the day and feel empowered to take another step forward tomorrow.</p><p>"Keep track of your small wins," Amabile says in a <a href="http://www.academybridge.org/videogallery/progress-principal/">video</a> posted on Academy Bridge. "Keep track of your progress every day. That can be very motivational."</p><p>One way to keep track of that progress is to write a "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/done-list-can-make-you-more-successful-at-work-2016-12">done list</a>," which features everything useful you did today (as opposed to a to-do list, which indicates how far you have left to go).</p><h2>5. Remember where you started</h2><p>Once you start keeping a diary, flip back to your entries from a few weeks or months ago.</p><p>"It can be very motivating to look back at where you came from," <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard/answer/Ben-Baert">writes Ben Baert</a>, because you'll realize that you're capable of making great strides.</p><p>For example, Baert says, "if you're learning how to draw, draw something (a cup, a tree, an animal), then draw the same thing again after a couple of weeks/months. Then compare with the original. That moment will be very motivational."</p><h2>6. Don't fear criticism</h2><p>No one likes to hear that they're doing something wrong. But try to keep your emotions in check.</p><p>"Consider the source and decide if the person really has the expertise or knowledge to make his or her comments," <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard/answer/MaRina-Abaza">writes MaRina Abaza</a>. "If you decide that the words are not just empty accusations, look at it as an opportunity to improve yourself."</p><p>In fact, psychologist and executive coach <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-other-people-think-of-you-matters-2016-8">Marshall Goldsmith says</a> that other people's perceptions of you can be even more important than <em>your</em> perception of you, especially in the workplace. Set a quit time</h2><p class="p1">When you need to get stuff done, it can seem like the only strategy is to work as hard as you can for as long as possible.</p><p class="p1">But that technique is usually counterproductive and can easily <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/signs-youre-suffering-from-job-burnout-2015-7">lead to burnout</a>.</p><p>Instead, <a href="https://www.quora.com/Self-Improvement-How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard-1/answer/Matt-Holmes-32">Matt Holmes recommends</a> imposing some deadlines and taking breaks.</p><p>It's "important to recognize when enough is enough," he says. "Set a realistic quitting time for yourself, and stick to it at least most days of the week. Stop answering emails after 8 p.m., or take Sundays off. You'll feel more refreshed and more productive when you allow yourself some down time."</p><h2>8. Spend time with smart people</h2><p>It's always intimidating to be in a room full of super-intelligent, super-knowledgeable folks - say, at a professional conference. But the experience can prompt you to challenge yourself to work harder than you thought you could.</p><p class="p1"><a href="https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard/answer/Devansh-Malik">Devansh Malik recommends</a> spending time with people "who know way more than you about anything and everything. This will encourage you to learn more and to achieve [so] that you'll automatically work hard."</p><h2>9. Rely on habits</h2><p class="p1">Try as you might to summon it, sometimes motivation will elude you.</p><p class="p1">That's why <a href="https://www.quora.com/Self-Improvement-How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard-1/answer/Eduardo-Matos-4">Eduardo Matos suggests</a> turning your desired behaviors - like studying - into habits.</p><p class="p1">"It's better to build the habit of studying X hours/day, and do it religiously, [so that] very soon you're going to be studying automatically," he writes.</p><p class="p1">One reason why practicing habits often trumps finding motivation is that you don't have to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/things-that-affect-willpower-decision-making-2014-11">exercise your willpower</a> to make the choice to study. It's simply something you do without thinking.</p><p class="p1">To start, figure out both the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-exactly-how-to-form-a-habit-that-sticks-2014-4">cue and reward</a> for your old habit. For example, maybe you have a bag of chips each day when you get home from work because it relaxes you. If you want to start a healthier habit, you can use arriving home as the cue to change into your jogging gear, and that warm and fuzzy post-exercise feeling as the reward. Soon the exercise habit will have replaced snacking, and you won't need to muster up the motivation to jog every day after work.</p><h2 class="p1">10. Anticipate difficulties</h2><p class="p1">If you prepare for challenges instead of pretending they won't come up, you'll be better equipped to fight them when they do arise.</p><p class="p1"><a href="https://www.quora.com/Self-Improvement-How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard-1/answer/Sean-Johnson">Writes Sean Johnson</a>:</p><p class="qtext_para" style="padding-left: 30px;">"In the beginning, it will feel uncomfortable. That's to be expected.</p><p class="qtext_para" style="padding-left: 30px;">"Anticipate this, and come up with a strategy for dealing with it in advance. Tell yourself 'when I get frustrated and want to quit, I will _______.' Your blank could take many forms - a reminder of some goal that your new focus will help you achieve, a reward you'll treat yourself to at the end of the day, etc."</p><p class="qtext_para">Johnson's suggestion sounds similar to "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/robert-cialdini-if-when-then-planning-helps-you-achieve-your-goals-2016-9">if/when/then" planning</a>. Here's how it works:</p><p class="qtext_para">You pick a cue: a specific time or place. Then you pick a desirable action that you can link to that cue.</p><p>So if your goal is to lose weight, your plan might be "when I get frustrated and want to quit, I will call my most supportive friend." That way, your brain will be programmed to have you dial said friend - instead of eat a cupcake - every time you get down on yourself.</p><h2>11. Focus on the process</h2><p>You've heard it before: Life is a journey, not a destination.</p><p><a href="https://www.quora.com/Self-Improvement-How-can-I-motivate-myself-to-work-hard-1/answer/Matthew-Jones-217">Matthew Jones writes</a>: "Sometimes you find more motivation when you stop focusing on the final destination and start enjoying the journey. Paying too much attention to the end goal produces stress and anxiety that wears you down with time, but when you fall in love with the process itself, you become revitalized."</p><p>Behavioral economist Dan Ariely <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-motivate-yourself-to-work-out-2016-12">gave Business Insider an example</a> of how focusing on the process might help if your goal is to exercise more.</p><p>Ariely's best advice is to schedule time for a workout and trust that you'll like it once you get started. Because once you do, thoughts of getting stronger and looking better - the likely outcomes of exercising regularly - kind of melt away. 11 tricks to motivate yourself to reach your goals

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>About a year ago, I went to a networking night for media professionals, hosted by my alma mater.</p><p>I said hello to a few people I recognized, sat through the presentations without asking any questions, and as soon as they were over, made a beeline for the door.</p><p>Rest assured, that's not the way I normally behave at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/common-networking-mistakes-2015-11">networking events</a>. Normally, I don't go to those events at all.</p><p>Judging by the number of Quora and Reddit threads on the topic, it seems like I'm in good company - a lot of people think networking is awkward, and/or gross, and/or generally useless.</p><p>But the key, according to the people who've posted on these threads, is finding a way to <em>make networking work for you</em>.</p><p>If you don't relish the idea of handing out business cards, or having 60-second conversations with 60 different people in a single night, or asking for favors outright, you don't have to. There are other ways to find jobs and learn more about your industry.</p><p>Below, we've rounded up some of the best networking advice out there - advice that few people are quite skilled or confident enough to be able to ignore.</p><h2><strong>1. Leverage your existing connections</strong></h2><p>Networking tends to be associated with meeting <em>new</em> people. But that's not always the most effective strategy.</p><p>On Quora, <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-get-better-at-networking/answer/Nelson-Wang-2">Nelson Wang writes</a>: "Realize that some of your best connections are existing ones. Reconnecting with your existing network is incredibly powerful because you already have a relationship with them."</p><p>As Steve Cadigan, former VP of Talent at LinkedIn, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-best-approach-to-networking-according-to-a-former-linkedin-vp-2017-3">told Business Insider's Aine Cain</a>, cultivating your current connections is often the best approach.</p><p>"It could be your tennis coach. It could be your history professor. It could be your senior thesis adviser. It could be so many people," he said. It could even be your college classmates - so keep in touch with them.</p><p>"You've got to start somewhere."</p><h2><strong>2. You can start small</strong></h2><p>Cut yourself some slack. <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/startups/comments/3takew/im_fucking_terrible_at_networking_events/cx518z0/">Redditor cjerrells writes</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Don't feel like you should be an amazing networker overnight.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Instead, attend your next event saying <em>'I'm going to introduce myself to *</em>one** person'*. Then, the one after, you aim for two."</p><h2><strong>3. Offer to help people</strong></h2><p>"Find ways to add value to others without expecting anything in return," Mike Fishbein <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-get-better-at-networking/answer/Mike-Fishbein">writes on Quora</a>. "When you do something for someone else that helps them in some way, they naturally want to reciprocate."</p><p>Scientists call it the "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-people-to-do-you-a-favor-2016-10">rule for reciprocation</a>." As psychologist Robert Cialdini writes in his book "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Pre-Suasion-Revolutionary-Way-Influence-Persuade/dp/1501109790/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=&amp;tag=bisafetynet-20">Pre-Suasion</a>," "People say yes to those they owe." So if you want someone's help, consider doing something useful for them first - like introducing them via email to a potential business partner.</p><p>Dave Kerpen, founder and CEO of social-media software company Likeable Local, says the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-best-question-to-ask-when-you-meet-an-influential-person-2016-2">best question</a> to ask when you meet an influential person is, "How can I help you?"</p><p>Obviously, you should really be in a position to assist the person. But even if they don't take you up on your offer, they'll probably feel warmer to you for having asked.</p><h2><strong>4. Talk about something other than work</strong></h2><p>Maybe you don't feel comfortable asking directly how you can help your new acquaintances. That's fine.</p><p>Still, "do have a good selling point about yourself, like a relatively unusual hobby or something, to talk about," Shweta Karwa <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-get-better-at-networking/answer/Shweta-Karwa">writes on Quora</a>.</p><p>Maybe you have a side gig selling artwork on Etsy, or maybe you volunteer at an elementary school. It's probably not something your conversation partner does, or even knows much about.</p><p>"It really makes for good conversations," Karwa writes. "You are probably adding value to their knowledge base, and it might be something they might get interested in. Win-win on both sides."</p><h2><strong>5. Ask a lot of questions</strong></h2><p>That's a suggestion from Micha Kaufman <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-get-better-at-networking/answer/Micha-Kaufman">on Quora</a>.</p><p>He writes: "People love talking about themselves. Asking lots of questions both implies that you're very interested in them and gives you crucial information."</p><p>Dale Carnegie said much the same thing back in his 1936 bestseller, "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/How-Win-Friends-Influence-People/dp/0671027034?tag=bisafetynet-20">How to Win Friends and Influence People</a>." One of his secrets to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-make-people-like-you-2015-12">making people like you</a> is simply to <em>listen</em> and encourage other people to talk about themselves.</p><p>It takes some of the pressure off you, too - instead of trying to describe your job as the most exciting thing in the world, you can talk in terms of the other person's interests and make them feel important.</p><h2> </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong>6. Review what is - and isn't - working</strong></h2><p>On Reddit, <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/startups/comments/3takew/im_fucking_terrible_at_networking_events/cx4v9v9/">dankness recommends</a> asking your conversation partner a lot of questions - and not stopping there.</p><p>He writes:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Review your questions. What worked? What didn't? Did you find a question that lead [sic] you into awkward silences? Did you find that some people were able to relate better to other questions?</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"If you have to do a LOT of these networking events, keep 1 or 2 questions and change a few others up. Again, hone this craft and keep trying new things."</p><p>The same strategy applies to networking more generally. Are you getting responses to cold emails? Are people freaked out when you ask them right away what their spirit animal is? Is the bright orange tie a good conversation piece?</p><p>Approach the whole thing analytically and you'll have a better shot at success in the future.</p><p>New York Times journalist Charles Duhigg <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/charles-duhigg-strategy-networking-at-conferences-2016-4">used a similar strategy</a> when he started as the Times' senior editor of live journalism, responsible for coordinating conferences.</p><p>He didn't particularly like schmoozing and experimented with different goals - first, having a 20-minute conversation with one person, next having multiple conversations in quick succession, and finally, talking to four people in the first 10 minutes and then going back to the person he liked most.</p><p>"Gamify" your networking experience and set a concrete objective for yourself.</p><h2><strong>7. Follow up regularly</strong></h2><p>"Follow-up isn't supposed to mean a one-time email that reads 'Connecting - Me from XYZ'," Utkarsh Sinha <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-get-better-at-networking/answer/Utkarsh-Sinha-21">writes on Quora</a>. "Building a network is for [a] lifetime."</p><p>He recommends sending the occasional email in which you share an article that's relevant to the person's interests, for example. You can even ask them for advice on a topic they're knowledgeable about and you're not.</p><p>The idea is to keep the conversation going.</p><h2><strong>8. Network all the time</strong></h2><p>You might not meet your future business partner on your commute home - but talking to a fellow passenger is definitely good practice for more formal networking events.</p><p>Then again, they might become your future business partner, after all.</p><p>Greg Muender <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-get-better-at-networking/answer/Greg-Muender">writes on Quora</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Stop thinking of 'networking' as [its] own independent entity. <em>Life</em> is networking. </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Some of the most meaningful relationships, friendships, and partnerships I have ever made have started with an encounter on a plane, at the dog park, on the subway, etc. </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Don't [confine] networking into a binary thing where you are either in 'networking' mode or you are not. Introduce yourself to the guy sitting next to you on the bench.
