<p>Ann Heywood <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323446404579006711579241756.html">has submitted a statement to Jeremy Page of the Wall Street Journal</a> indicating Neil Heywood's two children, 8 and 12, lack adequate resources for their future.</p>
<p>Neil Heywood is presumed to have been murdered by the wife of Bo Xilai, the former head of the Chongqing branch of the Communist Party and a once-"rising star" within the country's leadership ranks. <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/20/world/asia/trial-implicates-bo-xilai-in-heywood-cover-up.html">Bo was later purged from the party after accusations of a cover up regarding his wife's involvement in the incident</a>. The British government was also criticized over its handling of the case.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Given the circumstances of Neil's murder, I have been surprised and disappointed that, despite repeated discreet approaches to the Chinese authorities, there has been no substantive or practical response.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I hope and trust that the leaders of this great nation, which Neil loved and respected, will now show decisiveness and compassion, so as to mitigate the consequences of a terrible crime and to enable my family finally to achieve some kind of closure to our ongoing nightmare.</p>

Some state media also reported that the Communist party had a meeting to discuss his death.</span></p><p data-track-pos="0">Gu is the daughter of one of China's most important revolutionary generals. <p>Former Chongqiing party chief <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/china/2013-08/18/c_132640905.htm">Bo Xilai is set to go to trial on Thursday</a>. Xilai who was set to rise to power and take a place on <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>'s all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee fell</p>
<p>Specifically, he  face charges of bribery, graft and abuse of power at the Jinan Intermediate People's Court. Bo's wife Gu Kailai was charged with the murder of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-who-was-neil-haywood-2012-4">British national Neil Heywood</a>. Bo's downfall began with the circumstances around Heywood's death. Now he face charges of "bribery, graft and abuse of power," at the Jinan Intermediate People's Court.</p>
<p>Chinese policymakers have been cracking down on corruption. Former Chinese president <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hu-jintaos-speech-highlights-economy-corruption-2012-11">Hu Jintao warned that corruption "could prove fatal to the party, </a>and even cause the collapse of the party and the fall of the state." Of course, Bo had been a thorn in the side of many of China's top policymakers, and some worried that he would <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fukuyama-the-chinese-elite-ousted-bo-xilai-as-they-were-scared-he-would-become-the-next-mao-2012-5">become the next Mao.</a></p>

Yuan / Associated Press</p><p class="caption"> </p></div></div>The <keyword id="317968" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bo-Xilai">Bo Xilai</keyword> trial has finally concluded, and it looks like we're drawing to the final chapter of perhaps the most important political event in <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> since Tiananmen Square.</p>
<p>The trial itself, while heavily choreographed, has been revealing. One big thing to note is that while Bo was facing trial for graft, abuse of power, and fraud, much of the courtroom's surprises revolved around the illicit romantic life of the former Chongqing party boss, his wife, and the city's police chief.</p>
<p>The most recent revelation was that Wang Lijun, the police chief who was once one of Bo's closest associates, was, according to Bo, secretly in love with Bo's wife, Gu Kailai. “His emotions were entangled. He couldn't extricate himself," Bo <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/08/26/china-bo-xilai-trial/2698491/" target="_blank">told the court</a>.</p>
<p>It was Wang who set Bo's fall from grace in motion when he fled to the American consulate in Chengdu in February 2012, bringing details of British businessman Neil Heywood's apparent murder and subsequent cover-up with him. Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was later found guilty of that murder. Gu has since testified against Bo, though <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ousted-chinese-leader-bo-xilai-calls-his-wife-insane-after-she-testifies-against-him-2013-8">he has dismissed her as “insane.”</a></p>
<p>Bo, speaking in court, portrays Wang's flight differently. Wang "invaded my family, he invaded my basic emotions,” Bo said. He went on to explain that he had discovered Wang <a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china-insider/article/1299447/bo-xilais-trial-day-5-wang-lijun-defected-after-exposure-illicit" target="_blank">telling his wife that he had deep feelings for her</a>. “This is the real reason he defected."</p>
<p>It's unclear if Wang and Gu were lovers, though Bo does describe them as being like “paint and glue,” a Chinese idiom that implies a relationship.</p>
<p>When the Neil Heywood scandal first broke, of course, the widespread rumor was that Heywood had been Gu's lover — British tabloids even found the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CCoQFjAA&amp;url=http://www.businessinsider.com/neil-heywood-bo-xilai-gu-kailai-bournemouth-keystone-house-2012-4&amp;ei=kIkbUozVLbS-4APgjYC4BA&amp;usg=AFQjCNH_W1MbBpK2Q22i4PerBJB6HD4VOA&amp;sig2=OnogoEvjpJVWkJe39ulI0A&amp;bvm=bv.51156542,d.dmg" target="_blank">pair's alleged “love-nest” in the U.K.</a> This possibility didn't get much attention in the trial. Heywood's murder was ultimately attributed to an attempt to blackmail the couple and a threat against their son, Bo Guagua — even the younger Bo himself got caught up in rumors about <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/everyone-is-talking-about-what-kind-of-car-bo-xilais-son-drove-when-he-took-jon-huntsmans-daughter-out-on-a-date-2012-5">taking a daughter of John Huntsman out on a date</a>.</p>
<p>Bo was probably not a poor cuckold, of course. When he was booted out of the Chinese Communist Party, the official report stated that he had stated he <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bo-xilai-kicked-out-of-communist-party--accused-of-corruption-and-affairs-with-many-women-2012-9" target="_blank">"had or maintained improper sexual relations with multiple women."</a> There were even (faintly ridiculous) reports that he had a fling with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bo-xilai-zhang-ziyi-hong-kong-apple-daily-2012-5" target="_blank">Chinese star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Zhang Ziyi</a>. During the trial, Bo admitted that he and his wife had fallen out because of an affair he had in the 1990s, prompting her to <a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china-insider/article/1299125/live-coverage-bo-xilais-trial-bo-says-wife-gu-angry-over-affair" target="_blank">move to the United Kingdom to be near her son</a>.</p>
<p>Perhaps it's wrong to be surprised by the alleged affairs – sex scandals seem to be a recurring theme in 21<sup>st</sup> century Chinese politics, and Sinocism's Bill Bishop has told <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-sex-scandals-2013-8" target="_blank">Business Insider that mistresses are fairly socially acceptable for China's political elite</a>.  But it's still noteworthy that one way or another the vast political potential of Bo Xilai's Maoist populism were ultimately derailed by personal problems. Even if Bo's fall from grace was, as many have suspected, politically motivated by a Beijing elite that feared his personal popularity, his entangled love life appears to have given them the leverage they needed to take him out of action.</p>

The Illicit Romantic Affairs At The Heart Of China's Bo Xilai Scandal

<p><keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> is in the middle of it's most important political trial for decades, with ousted Chongqing party boss facing up to charges including bribery, and abuse of power.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/asia-pacific/china/130822/bo-xilai-trial-biggest-surprises">As Ben Carlson of the</a> Global Post writes, it's the first "Communist show trial of the social-media era," with the Jinan Intermediate People’s Court of Shandong Province essentially live-blogging the trial from on Sina Weibo (actual journalists at the court are being forced to watch a television showing the Weibo feed in a separate room).</p>
<p>It all sounds amazingly modern, but yes, this is still a show trial, and the authorities are working very hard to control the public perception of the trial.</p>
<p>For example, as pointed out by a <a href="https://twitter.com/ecxcn/status/370404259017146368/photo/1">number of observers on social media</a>, <keyword id="317968" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bo-Xilai">Bo Xilai</keyword> seems a little different at the trial. Take a look at this picture, the first picture of Bo released since his arrest:</p>

<p>Bo is actually a relatively tall guy, and towers over many of his cohorts — the Wall Street Journal <a href="http://stream.wsj.com/story/bo-xilai/SS-2-42626/SS-2-306636/">reports that he's</a> 6-foot-1, way over the reported average of the urban Chinese man (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height#Average_height_around_the_world">5-foot-8</a>).</p>
<p>If Bo's guards are dwarfing him, they must be at least 6-foot-5 or so.</p>
<p>What are the chances that Bo would randomly end up with two huge guards? They're certainly slim, and you have to guess that the guards were pre-picked to make Bo look smaller (they may also be standing on some kind of ledge, which also seems like pre-planned).</p>
<p>There is a logic here. While he was still in power, princeling Bo was seen as a charismatic and charming leader, capable of giving rousing speeches, and <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/bo-xilai-chinas-most-charismatic-politician-makes-a-bid-for-power-1917813.html">he had made his ambitions to lead China very clear</a>. He was also a Maoist, and there are reports that the Communist Party elite found his beliefs, ambition, and, more than everything else, his popularity, very threatening. The court room photo could well be a way of showing his supporters that he is now powerless.</p>
<p>It's just the latest public reminder of how the secret the Chinese legal system can be, especially in big, political trials like this. When Gu Kalai, Bo's wife, was put on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-who-was-neil-haywood-2012-4">trial last year for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood</a>, there were widespread (and seemingly) <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/experts-reportedly-believe-bo-xilais-wife-used-an-impostor-at-her-trial-2012-8">credible reports that a body double was on trial in her place</a>.</p>

This One Photo Shows That China's Most Important Political Trial In Decades Is Intricately Orchestrated Public Charade

<p><div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source on-image"> REUTERS/Jinan Intermediate People's Court/Handout via Reuters</p></div></div>A Chinese court Sunday sentenced former leading politician <keyword id="317968" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bo-Xilai">Bo Xilai</keyword> to life in prison after a sensational corruption trial that exposed intrigue and lavish lifestyles in the higher levels of the ruling party.</p>
<p>Bo, a member of the Communist Party's 25-strong elite politburo before his dramatic downfall, was convicted of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.</p>
<p>"The court sentences Bo Xilai to life imprisonment for taking bribes, deprives him of his political rights for life and confiscates all his property," the Jinan Intermediate People's Court said on its verified page on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter.</p>
<p>As a state servant Bo "abused his power (and) caused heavy losses to the interests of the country and the people", it said, adding the circumstances of the case were "particularly serious".</p>
<p>Bo was ousted from office last year after a scandal which saw his wife convicted of the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood.</p>
<p>The court sentenced Bo to life after finding him guilty of taking 20.4 million yuan ($3.3 million) in bribes.</p>
<p>It also sentenced him to 15 years in prison for embezzlement and seven for abuse of power.</p>
<p>The life sentence was more severe than many analysts had expected.</p>
<p>Bo's trial last month revealed a lifestyle in excess of what Communist Party officials on modest salaries should be able to afford, with evidence of bribes from rich businessmen, including a close associate who bought his family a villa in France.</p>
<p>In the proceedings, Bo described a love triangle between his wife and his top aide, while the court said he had acted to suppress an investigation into his wife's murder of the British businessman who had helped Bo manage property abroad.</p>
<p>Bo had also championed a leftist revival during his tenure as party chief of the southwestern mega-city of Chongqing, sending thousands of officials to the countryside to get closer to ordinary people, and holding mass concerts of "red songs" praising former leader Mao Zedong.</p>
<p>A photo posted by the court showed a handcuffed Bo, 64, dressed in an open-collar white shirt, black trousers and black athletic shoes, in the court surrounded by four uniformed police officers.</p>
<p>State TV later showed footage of Bo listening to the proceedings as two officers held him in place.</p>
<p>At a press conference after the verdict, court spokesman Liu Yanjie said Bo did not indicate in court whether he would appeal. His lawyers could not immediately be reached for comment.</p>
<p>The catalyst for Bo's fall came when his top aide -- Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun -- fled in February 2012 to the US consulate with evidence that the politician's wife had murdered the Briton the previous November.</p>
<p>With factions in the upper echelons of the Communist Party reportedly split over how to handle him, a year and a half passed before he went to trial, becoming the most high-profile official to do so in decades.</p>
<p>In last month's gripping five-day hearing he mounted a fierce and defiant defence against claims that he corruptly obtained money and abused his political position to cover up the murder.</p>
<p>Joseph Cheng, a China politics expert at City University of Hong Kong, said Bo's active defence helped earn him a harsh sentence.</p>
<p>"A defiant attitude and refusing to admit one's guilt is considered bad behaviour and attracts a heavier sentence," Cheng told AFP.</p>
<p>"Bo Xilai would certainly like to retain a chance of a political comeback, and a heavier sentence from the state certainly indicates a rejection of any chance of giving him a political comeback."</p>
<p>"This deprivation of political rights for life is an implicit answer to that kind of demand."</p>
<p>Bo poured billions into public works and social housing programmes while party chief of Chongqing, where he launched a high-profile anti-crime campaign that won him admirers across China.</p>
<p>Despite his popularity, reports of forced confessions and torture during the crime crackdown horrified Chinese liberals, while some top party leaders saw his ambition as challenging the party's cherished unity.</p>
<p>The party's new leadership under President Xi Jinping is trying to show it is combatting corruption.</p>
<p>But locals in Jinan in advance of the verdict expressed a widely held belief that trials of top officials are the outcome of political infighting, rather than purely legal proceedings.</p>
<p>"Bo is the kind of leader ordinary Chinese respect, he did a good job in Chongqing," said Lu Mingcai, a 63-year-old retired chauffeur.</p>
<p>"His mistake is a political one. It's got nothing to do with whether he was corrupt or not," Lu said, adding: "Bo will go to prison for sure."</p>
<p>Liu Qing, a middle-aged market stall owner said: "(Bo) has been sacrificed in a political struggle. I don't know if he was corrupt. What government official isn't corrupt these days?"</p>
<p>Dozens of police, some uniformed and others in plain clothes, surrounded the court in the eastern city of Jinan.</p>
<p>Though edited transcripts from the trial were posted online, the government has tightly controlled information about Bo's case.</p>
<p>Sunday's verdict drew often cynical responses on Chinese social media.</p>
<p>Bo's trial "perhaps is not the victory of anti-corruption", a user wrote in English on Sina Weibo, calling it "further evidence" of rampant corruption, including in the judicial system.</p>
<p>"Many questions arise: If he's corrupted, how many corrupted officers are there in China?"</p>
<p>Despite the life sentence, Bo might not spend all his remaining days in prison. In the past, senior Chinese politicians given prison terms have reportedly been released on medical parole and held under strict security at their family homes.</p>
