<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/51105072.cms" />“Dream so big that people think it is crazy,” said Naveen Jain, a serial entrepreneur who is venturing into outer space and landing on the moon. 
 
Jain is doing what entrepreneurs don’t even dare to think of. He is venturing into outer space through his Moon Express, the first private company to land a spacecraft on the Moon. 
 Moon Express has signed a contract with Rocket Lab to launch three <keyword id="3257081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Moon-Express-robotic-spacecraft">Moon Express robotic spacecraft</keyword> to land on the Moon starting in 2017. Moon Express is the first company in history to secure such a contract. 
 
“We will become the fourth superpower if we land up in moon,” said Jain. 
 
What may come as a surprise is that Jain does not have any experience in space engineering. 
 
So where did the idea some from? “Dream so big that people think it’s crazy. I think the biggest strength is not being expert in the field. Disruptive ideas come from people who come out of the industry,” said Jain. 
 
“It is not about the vision statement. It is about being obsessed with your passion. Exponential technology is making everything possible. Entrepreneurs are doing it all and will do it. Capital flows where opportunities are,” said Jain. 
 
Talking about when customers don’t come on board easily, Jain said it is really about the mindset. 
 
“You can watch me do it or be a part of it. You can be the coolest guy but your dad will always be the dad. Your self-worth is what you create. Your success is not about your bank balance, it is about how many lives you have touched,” added Jain.

Kennedy's famous line, Jain explained that Moon Express chose to the go to the moon not because it is easy, but because it is profitable. Although the lander will be equipped with scientific instruments, the company's main goal is <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/first-private-moon-landing-2016-8">mining for metals, fuels, and moon rocks</a> - which some estimates have valued at $16 quadrillion dollars."We see this as a first step in providing humanity with a plan B, rather than living on a single point of failure called Spaceship Earth," Jain said.Jain said that the fact that something that cost NASA billions of dollars a few years ago can be done for under $10 million dramatically transforms space exploration.Moon Express is one of 17 contenders for <a href="http://lunar.xprize.org/">Google's Lunar X-Prize</a>, a $30 million dollar challenge to land a spacecraft on the moon, travel 1,640 feet, and transmit high-definition photos and video back to Earth.It is the first private space company ever to ask for permission to travel beyond Earth's orbit, setting a precedent in space regulations. In order to be more persuasive, it came up with its own temporary framework, allowing the US government to oversee the mission. Although it hasn't yet chosen a landing site, they plan to <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/04/science/moon-express-faa.html?_r=0">stay away from the Apollo landing sites and other NASA artifacts</a>.<h2>The beginning of our lives in space</h2>The company hopes to launch toward the end of next year aboard an experimental rocket built by Rocket Labs, an aerospace company. Although it has developed and tested a large prototype lander, Moon Express still needs to produce a miniaturized version for the mission. Jain said that they are currently testing the navigation and propulsion system. They also need to work out the payloads and the <a href="http://www.popsci.com/how-first-private-landing-on-moon-could-move-humanity-forward">software that will land the rover on the moon</a>.While NASA has had its eyes on Mars in recent years, Jain believes that the best way to learn to live there is to start by living on the moon."It's much better to learn to live off the planet when you're only a few days away rather than months on Mars," Jain said. "We're going to need to go the Moon first. But these days, a global and entrepreneurial mindset means so much more than that.We live in a world where the prevailing ideology in the White House is that the richest country in the world is a nation of losers who should be afraid of their own shadows. In the face of challenges, leaders around the world are increasingly telling their people that they can and should retreat. The young entrepreneurs of the Kairos Society reject all that. And beyond the buzz words like "innovation" and "disruption," beyond the energetic speeches about changing the world, and the private discussions about venture capital allocation, there was a far more powerful underlying message at this meeting.The globalists are coming, and whether you like it or not, they're here to help.<h2>The kids are alright</h2>The Kairos Society is a fellowship program for the best and brightest young entrepeneurs in the world. Founded in 2008, the group's co-founders Ryan Bloomer, Alex Fiance, and Ankur Jain have since expanded the program to over 50 countries, and have also opened a venture fund. You must apply to be a part of Kairos, and referrals are ideal.The idea, as Bloomer and his colleagues said over and over again during the three-day affair, is to tackle "the big problems the next generation should be focusing on." They attend meetings like this one in New York City to explain the nuances of these problems the young entrepeneurs are turning their attention to. Those problems run the gamut from fake news in media to climate change. Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, for instance, showed up to discuss lowering the cost of healthcare. Later, Papandreou, like everyone else in attendance, clapped at dinner when young Kairos fellow and Brazilian CEO Miguel Andorffy told the story of his education company, Me Salva.Me Salva puts video classes on the internet, and as of now 400,000 classes are being watched a day. Four classes are being watched per second. Andorffy is looking for more capital to expand his business all over the world. Thus, the applause.And thus, the appeal of Kairos. Entrepreneurship is in large part about seizing one's circumstances, but if the market isn't ready to receive your idea (i.e. you can't find enough capital), it doesn't matter how good it is. The point of organizations like Kairos is to move the invisible hand of the market just an inch in another direction.And, in that sense, what people like nationalist White House advisor Steve Bannon say about globalists is true. There are only a few tens of thousands of people on the planet who get to move the hand, even just a little bit. Thinking beyond borders is not just encouraged, it's basically a given.On the second day of the conference, at the top of 1 World Trade Center, Kyle Nel, founder &amp; executive director of Lowe's Innovation Labs, challenged the Kairos kids to do something seemingly simple - make paint healthier and cheaper."Suggesting that something healthy is going to cost more is an old way of thinking," Nel said. "It's only helping people where they live globally if everyone can afford it... What we [at Lowes] don't have is the materials science. What we don't have is the new thinking."Nel's "new thinking," in addition to maintaining a global rather than national focus, represents moving away from traditional national and global institutions because, after all, the problems Kairos fellows are trying to solve have been left unfixed by "broken, old industries and government" (Jain's words).In that way, and in that way alone, the Kairos kids and the nationalists that have taken hold of global politics are in agreement. Ankur Jain and Marine Le Pen could shake hands and agree that government has failed the people. An entrepreneur himself, he spoke on a panel with Papandreou and Werner Vogels, CTO &amp; President of Amazon.The elder Jain described a world of entrepeneurs solving problems through private enterprise so successfully that the nation-state becomes irrelevant. Something like that would give the Le Pens, Bannons, and Trumps of the world a migraine. Now that trading has gone from an open-outcry system to the digital world, the place is a glorified TV set.It is a reminder that even the most powerful institutions must bend a knee to the force of technological change. It is a reminder that, no matter what Steve Bannon or Trump or anyone says, there is no going backward in time.Which means the world will continue getting smaller and closer and more interconnected, regardless of hiccups along the way. Kairos' entrepeneurs plan with that in mind.Nationalists would not like that the winner of the $100,000 "Kairos 50" prize (from venture capital firm Draper Associates) was a company called Benben, which seeks to streamline land and property administration in Africa using blockchain technology.They would not like that the $50,000 prize went to Neolight, a company that seeks to revolutionize neonatal care. That company is especially focused on finding ways to prevent infants from dying of hypothermia or suffering from jaundice. These are problems one is more likely to encounter in the developing world than in say, Des Moines, Iowa.In other words, the Kairos kids don't put America first. No one involved with the Society would ever ask them to. Young Silicon Valley and a bunch of elites just held a meeting about the soul of the entire global economy

According to PrivCo's sources, Foursquare is missing venture capitalist's projections, and even its own projections, quarter after quarter. PrivCo thinks investors will get tired of this and sell their shares by year-end for less money than they initially invested.
Specifically, PrivCo thinks Foursquare will be acquired for less than $50 million by the end of 2013, significantly less than the $71.3 million investors have pumped into it.
Its reasoning is this:
Aside from missing quarterly projections, PrivCo says Foursquare has struggled to raise a new round of financing for "nearly a year."
More so, it says Foursquare's existing investors have "made it clear to Foursquare management including CEO <keyword id="257639" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dennis-Crowley">Dennis Crowley</keyword> that they will not be investing additional capital into Foursquare either." PrivCo says it's their way of warning Crowley that he must find a sustainable business model quickly.
We have to assume the investors PrivCo is talking about are Union Square Ventures, a long-time investor in Foursquare, and Andreessen Horowitz, which led Foursquare's last round of financing and helped value the company at $550 million in July 2011.
As further proof, PrivCo reads between the lines of a recent blog post written by Union Square Ventures' <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fred-wilson-2012-2013-1">Fred Wilson, which stressed frustration with startups</a>. Wilson wrote, "So if I can give entrepreneurs a single piece of advice for 2013 it would be to deliver on your promises. Not just to your investors but also to your team and ultimately to yourself. This is no time to be in denial. That is a lethal attribute in times like these."
Union Square Ventures opted not to comment on PrivCo's report or its satisfaction with Foursquare's performance to date.
We should note that Fred Wilson isn't the USV investor involved in Foursquare though. It's his partner, Albert Wenger, who is on Foursquare's board.
PrivCo also used Foursquare's flat web traffic as a sign of bad times ahead. It says its website has hovered between 2.2 million and 2.5 million monthly uniques for the past year and a half.
"This shows that not only is Foursquare's audience too small for a consumer-oriented Internet company to attract meaningful ad dollars, but its web traffic numbers are flat, with no reversal on the horizon; this is a likely death spiral for a consumer social network," PrivCo writes.
Of course, Foursquare is first and foremost a mobile app and it hasn't pushed particularly hard to increase monthly uniques to its website. The report does note that Foursquare's users logged 1.9 billion minutes on the app in 2012, up 15% from 2011 according to Nielsen. Foursquare also added 15 million new accounts this year, bringing its total users to nearly 30 million. There have been more than 3 billion check-ins to date on the app.
What to make of it all?
It's true that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/foursquares-revenues-valuation-2012-11">investors aren't keen on investing at the moment.</a>
It's also been reported that <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324712504578131384140607240.html?mod=WSJ_Tech_LEFTTopNews&amp;_nocache=1353517051901&amp;user=welcome&amp;mg=id-wsj">Foursquare only generated $2 million this year</a>, which we have to assume is a big miss for both investors and the company.
But in the report, PrivCo made some blatant errors. For one, it incorrectly named Dennis Crowley's co-founder, Naveen Selvadurai, "Naveen Jain."
PrivCo makes money selling the business and financial research it collects on private companies. One way it seems to be making a name for itself is by publishing very negative reports about startups. It did this <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-under-the-radar-analyst-tearing-into-facebook-and-groupon-2011-8">with Groupon and Facebook</a>. (Then again, some of those reports proved to be accurate.) 
If PrivCo is right, it means the investors that will take the biggest hits are Union Square Ventures, O'Reilly Alphatech Ventures, Ron Conway and David Lee's SV Angel, Bijan Sabet's Spark Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz. But they'll receive cash back before common stockholders see a dime.
The person who would obviously get hit the hardest is Dennis Crowley, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-600-million-social-life-of-foursquare-founder-dennis-crowley-2012-2">who's spent his entire life trying to solve one problem</a>: finding his friends who are nearby.
Foursquare declined to comment for this story.
