YouTube unveils year-end trends, here is what India watched in 2024

Amid the severe pollution gripping the national capital, <keyword id="19948557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-metro" source="keywords">Delhi Metro</keyword> recorded its highest-ever daily ridership on November 18, with a staggering 78.67 lakh passenger journeys, according to official data. This figure exceeded the previous high of 77.49 lakh passengers on August 20 of this year, the data said. On November 18, the Yellow Line, which connects Millennium City Centre in Gurugram to Samaypur Badli in Delhi, saw the highest passenger traffic, with a record 20.99 lakh commuters. The Blue Line followed closely with 20.80 lakh passengers, while the Red Line recorded 8.56 lakh commuters, 8.15 lakh in Pink Line and 7.93 lakh in Violet Line. The Magenta Line saw 6.19 lakh passengers, followed by the Green Line with 4.12 lakh commuters, 81,985 in Airport Line, 57,701 in Rapid Metro, and 50,128, in the Grey Line, as per the data. Thick grey haze continued to choke Delhi for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, with pollution levels remaining alarmingly high at 488 in the 'severe plus' category. To encourage more people to use the metro in this scenario, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is running 60 extra trips on weekdays, offering more capacity than usual, an official statement said. The DMRC has recorded its 25 highest passenger journeys since August this year, the statement added. It emphasised that the more people opt for the metro over private vehicles, the greater the reduction in vehicular emissions, which will help improve the air quality of the city and its surrounding areas. In addition, the DMRC has introduced several measures to make travel more convenient for passengers, the statement read. These include the ability to book single or multiple journey tickets through various digital platforms, allowing passengers to plan their journeys anytime and anywhere without the need to stand in queues at the station. Furthermore, partnerships with organisations such as IRCTC, NCRTC, ITPO, and others have made it easier for people to not only travel by metro but also access interconnected travel options, along with various offers and events, all with seamless ease, the statement said. Cases of malaria are considerably higher so far when compared to last year. Delhi has reported 363 malaria cases till this month while the figure stood at 294 in the corresponding month in 2023. As per a PTI report, the total malaria cases last year were 426. Most malaria cases are reported from the West Delhi zone. As for Chikungunya, 43 cases have been reported so far. This is nearly double than last year when the figure stood at 23. A total of 65 cases of the virus were reported last year. The most number of chikungunya cases have been reported from the South Delhi zone this year. Last week, the city witnessed a spike of nearly 250 cases of dengue in seven days. As per Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) data from January till September 21, a total of 1,229 dengue cases have been reported in the city with the death of a 54-year old registered in Lok Nayak Hospital, a senior official at the hospital had confirmed. Delhi reported 651 cases of dengue this month. Last month, a total of 256 dengue cases were reported in the city. The number of cases has become three-digit since August, it said. Last year, Delhi reported 3,013 dengue cases till the corresponding month, a manifold increase from 525 in 2022. A total of 9,266 cases were reported in the entire year while 19 dengue deaths were registered in the city last year. In September alone, the figure stood at 2,141 cases in 2023. The most number of cases this year are reported from the Najafgarg zone at 180. In a week, 45 cases have been reported in the area, the highest of all the zones besides the south zone where an equal number of cases were reported this week. The non-MCD areas governed by other agencies like NDMC, Delhi Cantt, and Railways, reported 312 dengue cases to the total tally, as per the data. To enforce mosquito control laws, the MCD has issued over 1.14 lakh legal notices and 39,338 challans to those who allowed mosquito breeding on their properties. Repeat offenders have been fined Rs 24.82 lakh, and police complaints have been filed against 9,241 people who didn't follow the rules, as per the data. The civic body also plans to increase fogging operations at major upcoming public events like Dussehra and Durga Puja and step up inspections and anti-larval measures in areas with high mosquito populations to curb the infectivity of the virus. Delhi reports over 300 dengue cases in a week; malaria and chikungunya cases on the rise

New Delhi [India], March 12 (ANI): The latest data released by the <keyword id="20070866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-statistical-office" source="keywords">National Statistical Office</keyword> (<keyword id="20067517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nso" source="keywords">NSO</keyword>), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), indicates a slight easing in retail inflation for the month of February 2024. According to the provisional figures provided by the NSO, the retail inflation, based on the Consumer Price Index (General), stood at 5.09 per cent in February 2024. This marks a marginal decrease from 5.10 per cent recorded in January 2024. The combined inflation rate for rural and urban areas came down to 5.09 per cent from the previous month's 5.10 per cent. The data further reveals that the <keyword id="20931744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-food-price" source="keywords">Consumer Food Price</keyword> Index (<keyword id="20931745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cfpi" source="keywords">CFPI</keyword>) witnessed a similar trend, with a slight decrease from 8.30 per cent in January 2024 to 8.21 per cent in February 2024. Both rural and urban areas experienced a dip in food inflation, indicating a marginal relief for consumers across the board. The monthly changes in the General Indices and CFPIs show a negligible increase of 0.16 per cent in the combined CPI (General) and 0.11 per cent in the CFPI from January 2024 to February 2024. This indicates a relatively stable price movement in essential goods and services during the said period. The NSO collects price data from a vast sample size, covering both rural and urban markets across all states and union territories. During February 2024, data was collected from 100 per cent of villages and 98.5 per cent of urban markets. The comprehensive coverage ensures that the inflation figures are representative of the diverse consumption patterns across the country. In terms of the subgroup analysis, notable trends were observed in various categories. Cereals and products, meat and fish, and egg prices showed moderate increases, contributing to the overall inflation rate. On the other hand, certain items like oils and fats experienced a decline in prices, exerting downward pressure on inflation. The NSO has also provided state-wise inflation data, highlighting the varying price dynamics across different regions. States like <keyword id="19896313" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="andhra-pradesh" source="keywords">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>, Telangana, and <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword> recorded relatively higher inflation rates, while states like Delhi and Maharashtra witnessed a more subdued inflationary environment. However, softening of core inflation should provide confidence to trajectory of inflation moving as expected. We think RBI would rather continue with stability priority and continue maintaining 4% inflation target as sacrosanct, and hence we do not see premature easing from RBI,” said Akhil Mittal, senior fund manager-fixed income, Tata Mutual Fund. Most experts believe that uncertain food prices will keep the central bank cautious. "CPI inflation came in slightly softer than our expectations led by moderation in food prices. Positively though, core inflation softened in line with our expectations. However, uncertainties in food inflation outlook should keep RBI cautious in the near term, with much of action by the RBI expected on the liquidity front," said Upasna Bhardwaj, chief economist, Kotak Mahindra Bank. Manufacturing drags November industrial growth to 2.4% India's industrial growth rate slumped to an 8-month low of 2.4% in November from a 16-month high of 11.6% in October, data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Friday showed. In November 2022, the country’s industrial production had grown by 7.6%. The growth rate for November was dragged down by the manufacturing sector, which slowed to a crawl of 1.2 per cent on a year-on-year basis after having posted an increase of 10.2 per cent in October. The sharp slowdown in manufacturing output growth, which accounts for more than three-fourths of the index of industrial production (IIP), was partly attributed to the large number of holidays in November on account of festivals due to which the working declined. The IIP figure has been pulled down by the manufacturing sector which posted the lowest annualised growth of 1.2% in 13 months after a solid momentum in the early part of the fiscal. While moderation in industrial activity is typically seen in the post-festive season, this may also be an indication of an expectation of demand slowdown in the last quarter of the fiscal, he added. The electricity generation also grew at a slower pace of 5.8% as compared to a high double digit growth of 20.4% in October. Similarly, the mining output growth declined to 6.8% from 13.1% in October. “Industrial output for Nov-23 has disappointed even factoring in the impact of the festival holidays during the month and the adverse base factor. IIP has recorded a modest growth of 2.4% YoY, the lowest print in eight months since March 2023," said Suman Chowdhury, chief economist &amp; head of research of Acuite Ratings &amp; Research. There has also been a contraction in both consumer durables and non-durables output in Nov-23, leading to an overall contraction of 4.2 per cent YoY in the consumer goods sector. “The growth indicators from the industrial production print however seem to be uneven. Output from most of the key industries have witnessed moderate growth, however, due to a high statistical base. However, the consumer durable output, which is consumption reflection, contracted by 5.4%. The gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 6.2% in the July-September quarter of 2022-23. India remained the fastest-growing major economy, as China posted a 4.9% growth in July-September 2023. “The 7.6% GDP growth in the September quarter has far exceeded the RBI’s 6.5% estimate for the period, ensuring that India remains on the growth path despite multiple global headwinds arising from economic and geo-political uncertainties,” said Vivek Rathi, National Director Research, Knight Frank India. Manufacturing picks up pace, agriculture slows The gross value added (GVA) in the manufacturing sector showed a growth of 13.9% in the second quarter of the current fiscal compared to a contraction of 3.8% in the year-ago period. “Manufacturing and construction were the clear leaders with growth of 13.9% and 13% respectively. In the case of manufacturing, high profit growth contributed to the buoyancy while construction was up due to housing as well as government capex,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda. As per the data, the output (GVA) in the 'mining and quarrying' accelerated to 10% in the second quarter against a contraction of 0.1% a year ago. Electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services' grew by 10.1% from 6.1%. “Double digit growth in the industry sector, especially in manufacturing and construction is suggesting that businesses ramped up production to meet the pent-up demand just before the festivals,” said Rumki Majumdar, Economist, Deloitte India. According to the <keyword id="7734679" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-statistical-office" source="Orion">National Statistical Office</keyword> (NSO) data, the agriculture sector GVA growth decelerated to 1.2% in the September 2023 quarter from 2.5% a year ago. This was expected due to seasonal effect, say economists. The construction sector recorded a growth of 13.3% year-on-year in the second quarter compared to 5.7%. The expansion in financial, real estate and professional services' GVA was 6%, down from 7.1% in the year-ago quarter. “As a derived demand, the upturn in the capex cycle and the strengthening domestic profile of consumers should prove to be strong drivers of India's real estate market. The continuation of the real estate upcycles, coupled with the increased focus on infrastructure development will support the sustained growth of the construction sector,” said Rathi. Meanwhile, the output of eight key infrastructure sectors jumped 12.1% in October 2023 against 0.7% expansion in the year-ago period on account of a sharp uptick in production of coal, steel, cement and electricity, according to the official data. The government's fiscal deficit at the end of October touched 45% of the full-year budget estimate, according to data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) on Thursday. “Personal consumption growth lost momentum and grew only 3.1% YoY. However, it could be a possibility that consumers postponed their spending for the upcoming festive months and may have reallocated funds for investments. The results were telling: a one-unit increase in PM2.5 exposure was associated with a 1.146% decrease in <keyword id="23109325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-earnings" source="Orion">economic earnings</keyword>, measured using a statistic called <keyword id="23109327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Absolute-Upward-Mobility" source="Orion">Absolute Upward Mobility</keyword> (AUM). The data revealed that this impact was not uniform across the country. Midwestern and Southern regions saw the highest negative effects, suggesting regional disparities in both air quality and its long-term economic impacts. <h2>Call for action </h2>The authors argue that these findings should encourage the creation of stringent national air quality standards, as well as targeted interventions to address pollution in highly affected regions. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Americans are flocking to the South for jobs, lower taxes, and more affordable housing.</li><li>But by some economic measures, the South has some of the poorest states in the nation.</li></ul>The future of the US economy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-economy-us-south-texas-florida-houston-dallas-nashville-miami-2023-12">might be in the South</a> — but some states in the region are at risk of being left behind.What constitutes the Southern region of the US is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/south-states-usa-2018-5">up for debate</a>, but the Census Bureau <a target="_blank" href="https://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/maps-data/maps/reference/us_regdiv.pdf">defines</a> it as 16 US states — including Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia — plus the District of Columbia.In June, the financial services company WalletHub <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-state-economies-ranking-best-worst-wallethub-washington-utah-massachusetts-2024-6">ranked the 50 states and DC</a> across three categories: economic activity, economic health, and innovation potential. Twenty-eight metrics, including the share of fast-growing firms, the unemployment rate, and entrepreneurial activity, were used in the analysis.Five of the 10 states with the lowest rankings were located in the South: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mississippi-defends-abortion-ban-one-in-three-kids-in-poverty-2021-11">Mississippi</a>, West Virginia, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Kentucky.Additionally, the six states with the lowest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-by-metro-area-ranked-san-francisco-seattle-austin-2018-4#40-cleveland-elyria-oh-1">GDP per capita</a> — the size of a state's economy, divided by the number of people living in the state — are all in the South: Mississippi, West Virginia, Arkansas, Alabama, South Carolina, and Kentucky. GDP per capita is one indicator that's used to gauge economic prosperity and living standards across the US — it's calculated using the latest state-level GDP data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and population estimates from the Census Bureau.In some ways, the Southern economy is booming. Cities like Houston, Dallas, Miami, and Nashville could be poised to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-economy-us-houston-dallas-nashville-miami-cities-moving-businesses-2023-11">become economic powerhouses</a> as more companies invest there and create jobs. Additionally, warmer weather, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/save-income-tax-moving-california-florida-new-york-2022-9">lower taxes</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-texas-moving-arizona-florida-expensive-housing-costs-washington-nevada-2023-10">cheaper housing</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cities-hiring-the-most-florida-texas-california-job-growth-tech-2024-4">job growth</a> have persuaded many Americans to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/population-boom-south-texas-georgia-dallas-houston-atlanta-movers-homebuyers-2024-3">move South</a> in recent years — boosting the region's labor force and consumer <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bea.gov/news/2023/personal-consumption-expenditures-state-2022">spending</a>.However, some economic measures show the South is lagging behind other regions of the US. And even if some of the region's cities and states prosper in the years to come, other areas could miss out on the economic boom.<h2 id="858fbdc9-29ae-4b33-8a5d-210eb5d9b9dd">Workers in Southern states tend to have lower wages</h2>An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.epi.org/publication/rooted-racism-part3/">analysis</a> of 2021 current population survey data published in July by the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank, found that workers in the South earned less than those in other regions.The median Southern worker earned $20.30 an hour, compared to $21.05 in the Midwest, $22.08 in the West, and $23.81 in the Northeast. Additionally, the analysis found that 22% of Southern workers earned less than $15 an hour, compared to 17% in the Midwest, 12% in the Northeast, and 10% in the West.The Economic Policy Institute pointed to low <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/map-the-last-time-each-state-raised-its-minimum-wage-2021-2">minimum wages</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-union-membership-fell-lowest-rate-record-2022-2023-1">unionization rates</a> in Southern states as two factors keeping pay down.Of course, workers in some Southern states earn less than others. In July, the Economic Innovation Group, a centrist think-tank, published an <a target="_blank" href="https://eig.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/TAWP-Kirkegaard.pdf">analysis</a> by Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, a nonresident fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Using US Bureau of Economic Analysis and Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the analysis highlighted the average annual wages across US states as of 2022.Mississippi had the second lowest average annual wage in the US at roughly $60,000 — only Hawaii ranked lower. Texas was the only Southern state in the top 10, ranking 8th with an average annual wage of about $80,000.<h2 id="1ecaa78f-0299-48c6-9804-8102c4eabe31">The South's low unemployment rate is misleading</h2>In recent years, the South has had a <a target="_blank" href="https://institute.bankofamerica.com/content/dam/economic-insights/regional-morsel-southern-economy-trends.pdf">low</a> unemployment rate compared to other US regions. But an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.epi.org/publication/rooted-racism-part2/#epi-toc-6">analysis</a> published in June by the Economic Policy Institute called the low jobless rate "misleading."That's because only people who are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/september-jobs-report-263k-payrolls-unemployment-rate-hiring-labor-market-2022-10">actively looking for work</a> are counted in official US unemployment statistics. And there's evidence to suggest many Southerners have given up looking or faced obstacles to employment, Chandra Childers, senior policy and economic analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, wrote in the analysis.As of 2022, the share of people aged 25 to 54 with jobs was lower in the South than the rest of the US, according to the Economic Policy Institute's analysis of Current Population Survey data. That so-called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-men-working-less-recessions-employment-productivity-2024-4">prime-age employment rate</a> — an oft-cited indicator of labor force strength — was 78.9% in the South, 79.2% in the West, 80.6% in the Northeast, and 81.9% in the Midwest.It's possible these figures could change as more updated data becomes available. But if people in the South are less likely to have jobs than people in other regions, then the region's low unemployment rate doesn't tell the full story.<h2 id="f8b9eb0e-36e7-48fb-9e8e-2275ade9e55e">There are reasons to be optimistic about the South's economy</h2>To be sure, it's not all doom and gloom for the South.A thriving economy needs people to work jobs and spend money, and the South is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/city-metro-population-growth-from-2022-to-2023-florida-2024-3">boosting its population</a> in all sorts of ways.While the US has experienced a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-population-stalled-during-pandemic-slower-than-during-great-depression-2022-1">population slowdown</a> in recent years, the South has the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-economy-us-south-texas-florida-houston-dallas-nashville-miami-2023-12">highest birthrate</a> of any region. And when people are born there, they often don't leave. Eighty-two percent of native-born Texans still resided in the state as of 2021, the highest rate in the US, according to a Dallas Fed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dallasfed.org/research/economics/2023/0829">analysis</a> published in August 2023. North Carolina and Georgia rounded out the top three.Many Americans not born in the South have moved there as well. Between July 2022 and 2023, the states with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/state-population-growth-declines-map-moving-migration-census-2023-12">largest population growth</a> were all located in the South: Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Only two Southern states — Louisiana and West Virginia — were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2023/population-trends-return-to-pre-pandemic-norms.html">among</a> the eight US states that saw their populations decline between 2022 and 2023.Overall, there's plenty of reason to be optimistic about the future of the South's economy.
