New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): <keyword id="19953789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras" source="keywords">IIT Madras</keyword> has been ranked the <keyword id="19925221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="best" source="keywords">best</keyword> <keyword id="22759867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-educational-institution" source="keywords">higher educational institution</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay in an overall category in the ranking conducted by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College. The Chennai-based institute retained the No 1 position in categories "overall and engineering" The NIRF rankings lists was released for 13 different categories, including universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. IIT Madras ranked best higher educational institution in India

The University of Delhi has released a list of 6,100 <keyword id="21977691" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vacant-seats" source="keywords">vacant seats</keyword> for the second round of undergraduate <keyword id="19962926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="admissions" source="keywords">admissions</keyword>, following the conclusion of the first round. Vacant seats have been displayed on the dashboards of the candidates. With 91.98 per cent (65,843) of seats already filled, candidates have been provided the opportunity to re-order their (college and course) preferences from August 22 to 23. The university aims to begin the <keyword id="20248930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="academic-session" source="keywords">academic session</keyword> on August 29. As many as 65,843 candidates have confirmed their admission to undergraduate courses at <keyword id="19927119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="keywords">Delhi University</keyword> in the first round. The total number of <keyword id="22671029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="undergraduate-seats" source="keywords">undergraduate seats</keyword> in <keyword id="21617246" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DU-colleges" source="keywords">DU colleges</keyword> is around 71,600. Early this month, the university began the allocation acceptance process, offering 97,387 seats in the first round. To ensure optimal seat occupancy, the administration decided to make extra allocations, targeting an academic session starting on August 29. The university is conducting admissions for 71,600 seats (excluding supernumerary seats) in 69 colleges and departments. There are 1,559 programme-college combinations available for admissions. This year, DU has introduced a feature on the candidates' dashboard, enabling them to view the details of <keyword id="22889419" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cutoffs-and-ranks" source="keywords">cutoffs and ranks</keyword> determining seat allocation based on category and quota. Earlier in the month, the University of Delhi (DU) climbed five spots to secure the 6th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (<keyword id="20051367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirf" source="keywords">NIRF</keyword>) 2024. DU Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh attributed this achievement to the collective efforts of the university's faculty, students, and staff. In the university category at the national level, DU had previously moved up two spots to reach the 11th position last year. This year, the university continued its upward trajectory, also climbing seven places in the overall ranking to secure the 15th spot.

And even if some of the region's cities and states prosper in the years to come, other areas could miss out on the economic boom.<h2 id="858fbdc9-29ae-4b33-8a5d-210eb5d9b9dd">Workers in Southern states tend to have lower wages</h2>An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.epi.org/publication/rooted-racism-part3/">analysis</a> of 2021 current population survey data published in July by the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank, found that workers in the South earned less than those in other regions.The median Southern worker earned $20.30 an hour, compared to $21.05 in the Midwest, $22.08 in the West, and $23.81 in the Northeast. Additionally, the analysis found that 22% of Southern workers earned less than $15 an hour, compared to 17% in the Midwest, 12% in the Northeast, and 10% in the West.The Economic Policy Institute pointed to low <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/map-the-last-time-each-state-raised-its-minimum-wage-2021-2">minimum wages</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-union-membership-fell-lowest-rate-record-2022-2023-1">unionization rates</a> in Southern states as two factors keeping pay down.Of course, workers in some Southern states earn less than others. In July, the Economic Innovation Group, a centrist think-tank, published an <a target="_blank" href="https://eig.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/TAWP-Kirkegaard.pdf">analysis</a> by Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, a nonresident fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Using US Bureau of Economic Analysis and Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the analysis highlighted the average annual wages across US states as of 2022.Mississippi had the second lowest average annual wage in the US at roughly $60,000 — only Hawaii ranked lower. Texas was the only Southern state in the top 10, ranking 8th with an average annual wage of about $80,000.<h2 id="1ecaa78f-0299-48c6-9804-8102c4eabe31">The South's low unemployment rate is misleading</h2>In recent years, the South has had a <a target="_blank" href="https://institute.bankofamerica.com/content/dam/economic-insights/regional-morsel-southern-economy-trends.pdf">low</a> unemployment rate compared to other US regions. But an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.epi.org/publication/rooted-racism-part2/#epi-toc-6">analysis</a> published in June by the Economic Policy Institute called the low jobless rate "misleading."That's because only people who are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/september-jobs-report-263k-payrolls-unemployment-rate-hiring-labor-market-2022-10">actively looking for work</a> are counted in official US unemployment statistics. And there's evidence to suggest many Southerners have given up looking or faced obstacles to employment, Chandra Childers, senior policy and economic analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, wrote in the analysis.As of 2022, the share of people aged 25 to 54 with jobs was lower in the South than the rest of the US, according to the Economic Policy Institute's analysis of Current Population Survey data. That so-called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-men-working-less-recessions-employment-productivity-2024-4">prime-age employment rate</a> — an oft-cited indicator of labor force strength — was 78.9% in the South, 79.2% in the West, 80.6% in the Northeast, and 81.9% in the Midwest.It's possible these figures could change as more updated data becomes available. But if people in the South are less likely to have jobs than people in other regions, then the region's low unemployment rate doesn't tell the full story.<h2 id="f8b9eb0e-36e7-48fb-9e8e-2275ade9e55e">There are reasons to be optimistic about the South's economy</h2>To be sure, it's not all doom and gloom for the South.A thriving economy needs people to work jobs and spend money, and the South is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/city-metro-population-growth-from-2022-to-2023-florida-2024-3">boosting its population</a> in all sorts of ways.While the US has experienced a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-population-stalled-during-pandemic-slower-than-during-great-depression-2022-1">population slowdown</a> in recent years, the South has the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-economy-us-south-texas-florida-houston-dallas-nashville-miami-2023-12">highest birthrate</a> of any region. And when people are born there, they often don't leave. Eighty-two percent of native-born Texans still resided in the state as of 2021, the highest rate in the US, according to a Dallas Fed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dallasfed.org/research/economics/2023/0829">analysis</a> published in August 2023. North Carolina and Georgia rounded out the top three.Many Americans not born in the South have moved there as well. Between July 2022 and 2023, the states with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/state-population-growth-declines-map-moving-migration-census-2023-12">largest population growth</a> were all located in the South: Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Only two Southern states — Louisiana and West Virginia — were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2023/population-trends-return-to-pre-pandemic-norms.html">among</a> the eight US states that saw their populations decline between 2022 and 2023.Overall, there's plenty of reason to be optimistic about the future of the South's economy. The South's economic boom is masking a harsher reality. It still has several of the poorest states in the nation. 

The Centre on Thursday told the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Supreme Court" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Supreme Court">Supreme Court</keyword> that the decision to give <keyword id="21375140" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grace-marks" source="keywords">grace marks</keyword> to 1,563 <keyword id="20055256" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET-UG" source="keywords">NEET-UG</keyword>, 2024 candidates for admission to <keyword id="19968296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MBBS" source="keywords">MBBS</keyword>, <keyword id="20007002" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BDS" source="keywords">BDS</keyword> and others courses has been cancelled and they will be given an option to take a re-test on June 23. A vacation bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was told by the counsel for the Centre and the <keyword id="19904021" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Testing-Agency" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Testing Agency" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Testing Agency">National Testing Agency</keyword> (NTA) that the students, who were given grace marks, will be given an option to take the re-test. The court said it will not stay the counselling process for admissions. If the candidates, out of the 1,563, do not wish to take up the retest then their earlier marks, sans the grace marks, will be given for the purposes of the results. The results of the re-test will be declared on June 30 and the counselling for admission in the MBBS, BDS, other courses will start on July 6, the Centre said. Taking note of the submissions, the bench said all the pleas, including the one filed by Alakh Pandey, the chief executive of EdTech firm Physics Wallah over the issue of award of grace marks, will be taken up for hearing on July 8. They also include the petitions seeking cancellation of NEET-UG, 2024 on account of allegation of question paper leaks and other malpractices. The examination was held by the NTA on May 5 across 4,750 centres and around 24 lakh candidates took it. The results were expected to be declared on June 14 but were announced on June 4, apparently because the evaluation of the answer sheets got completed earlier. The allegations such as question paper leak and the grant of grace marks to over 1,500 medical aspirants have led to protests and filing of cases in seven high courts as also the Supreme Court. As many as 67 students scored a perfect 720, unprecedented in the NTA's history, with six from a centre in Haryana's Faridabad figuring in the list, raising suspicions about irregularities. Scores of students protested in Delhi on June 10 seeking a probe into alleged irregularities. It has been alleged that grace marks contributed to 67 students sharing the top rank. The NEET-UG examination is conducted by the NTA for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country. Row over NEET-UG: Grace marks given to 1,563 candidates withdrawn, Centre to SC

"Do not get intimidated by anyone. Do not bow down to any unconstitutional means. Do not be afraid of anyone and discharge your duties, based on merit, on this counting day," he wrote. "We owe it to future generations, a vibrant Democracy and a long-lasting Constitution, as penned by the makers of modern India," he said. The counting of votes polled in the Lok Sabha elections will be held on Tuesday. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Infographic"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> "In this hope that India remains truly Democratic in nature, I extend good wishes to each one of you, and expect that our eternal ideals of the Constitution remain untarnished," the Congress chief said. He said that the Congress, through the Constitution prepared by inspirational founding members such as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, B R Ambedkar, Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Azad, Sarojini Naidu and countless others, not only created a framework of strong governance, but also ensured affirmative action through representation of the marginalised in the bureaucracy and the civil society. "The last decade has witnessed a systemic pattern to assault, undermine and suppress our autonomous institutions by the ruling party. India's Democratic ethos are being consequently damaged. There is a widespread tendency to turn India into a regimental dictatorship. "We are increasingly seeing some institutions shedding their independence and brazenly following the diktats of the ruling party. Some have completely adopted their style of communication, their way of functioning, and in some cases even their political rhetoric," Kharge said. But it is not their fault, he said. "With brute power, threat, coercive mechanisms and misuse of agencies, this tendency to bow to the powers that have become a way for their short-term survival. Even though, in this denigration, India's Constitution and Democracy have become a casualty." The Congress chief also said that the "will of the people" is supreme, and people want Indian bureaucracy to again be the same 'Steel frame of India' as envisaged by Sardar Patel. "Indian National Congress now urges the entire bureaucracy, to adhere to the Constitution, enact their duties, and serve the nation, without fear, favour and ill-will against anybody," Kharge said. Counting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections would be held on Tuesday, and both the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc have claimed victory. Meanwhile, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya shared a purported letter of the Congress in which it has asked all its cadres to reach the counting centres. However, there was no confirmation of the letter from the Congress. "<keyword id="1571" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="congress-party" source="Orion">Congress party</keyword>'s instruction to its workers' reads like a manual to riot...There is absolutely no merit in asking people to assembly in state and district offices because counting happens in a designated secure zone for each Lok Sabha, unless the idea is to unleash mobs and disrupt the process," Malviya said in a post on X while sharing the unsigned letter of the Congress.

Here are India’s top law schools, according to the Indian government

From the coming new academic session, more than 300 universities across the country can implement the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (<keyword id="1650316" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fyup" source="Orion">FYUP</keyword>). However, this will not be mandatory as students will have the option to pursue FYUP or three-year undergraduate programme. According to <keyword id="44171" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ugc" source="Orion">UGC</keyword>, students will get a four-year undergraduate 'UG Honours' degree with research specialisation. At present, FYUP has been implemented in about 150 universities across the country from the current session 2023-24. According to UGC Chairman Professor M. Jagadish Kumar, this number will double in the next session. FYUP was implemented by 105 universities across the country at the beginning of the academic session 2023-24. The universities implementing four-year undergraduate courses included 19 central universities, 24 state level universities, 44 deemed universities and 18 private universities. These include Delhi University, Aligarh Muslim University, Jammu Central University, <keyword id="64114" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="visva-bharati-university" source="Orion">Visva Bharati University</keyword>, <keyword id="19309330" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rashtriya-sanskrit-university" source="Orion">Rashtriya Sanskrit University</keyword> and Maulana Azad National Urdu University. Now the number of these universities has increased to 150. Under the framework of FYUP, UGC has provided students the option to pursue a three-year undergraduate degree as well as a four-year Honours degree, following the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP). According to the UGC Chairman, students will be provided with a three-year UG degree on completion of 120 credits and FYUP Honours degree on completion of 160 credits in 4 years. Experts believe that the new draft of the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) will help students wishing to pursue higher education abroad. The craze among Indian students for studying abroad is increasing year by year. Till November last year, more than 6 lakh Indian students went abroad for higher education, whereas in 2021 this number was 4.44 lakh. As per these figures, Canada, Germany, Australia, United States and Italy are the top 5 countries where more Indian students prefer to study. According to the new draft of UGC, now students will be able to get undergraduate 'Honours' degree only after completing four years instead of three years. UGC says that the draft curriculum and credit framework of FYUP is as per international standards. One advantage of international equality in the level of education is that Indian students will get more opportunities than before for higher education in universities of America and Western countries. However, some academics do not agree with this. Renowned educationist <keyword id="19309331" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cs-kandpal" source="Orion">CS Kandpal</keyword> said, "FYUP will help those students who are interested in getting admission in many famous universities of America. But there is a need to teach such skills in the programme so that employment can be increased. Such skills will also be very helpful for students studying abroad. These skills may include communication, adaptability, foreign language, and self-awareness." "The basic objective was to include more number of students in the three-year programme in the country. FYUP is an extension of the three-year degree programme. Like in schools you go to class, prepare notes and give exams. You get a grade according to your performance in the exam. With this type of education, students are not prepared to pursue graduation as well as career in good universities abroad, because their aim is only to get admission in a foreign university. Institutions which are planning to start FYUP need to think about this," he added.

The policy aims to push domestic production of launch vehicles, satellite systems and sub-systems and ground equipment manufacturing. State's Principal Secretary, Industry and Commerce, <keyword id="130896" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jayesh-Ranjan">Jayesh Ranjan</keyword>, said on Sunday that Telangana is creating a holistic framework to develop end-to-end spacetech ecosystem in the state and attempt to capture the emerging global opportunities in space-related investments and innovations. This can potentially create a trickle-down impact on other areas of innovation such as universal connectivity and big data analytics for agriculture, remote education, disaster management, he said. Equal emphasis would be given to downstream applications of remote sensing that have the potential to solve real-life problems in agriculture, disaster management, insurance, urban flood modeling and forestry. The Centre's Department of Space recently released the draft Spacecom policy 2020 and draft SpaceRS policy 2020. Officials said states can significantly contribute to achieving the national objectives like "Atmanirbhar Bharat". Telangana is already home to several renowned start-ups such as Skyroot, Dhruva and other major companies in the spacetech sector. To formulate Telangana's spacetech policy framework, the state government held a virtual consultation. It invited stakeholders like hardware start-ups, analytics start-ups and academia to share their insights during a virtual stakeholder consultation.
