The move is aimed at easing efforts during natural calamities and emergency situations. The government has prepared a standard design for the road runway. The airstrips will span over 5-6 kilometres on a 60-metre wide concrete road. They will have parking slots for four aircraft, two gates at either ends of the strip and an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower. The road runways are aimed at reaching out to the affected areas in the fastest possible time in case of natural calamities such as earthquakes or floods when air connectivity is the only viable option.The government plans to remove the hindrance caused by the electric poles, trees and dividers. According to the country’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the landing airstrips will cost about ₹836.6 million. The project will be managed by the Indian Air Force (IAF), India’s Ministry of Defence and its transport ministry. India plans to build 11 emergency airstrips on its national highways

<keyword id="12760343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Highways-Infra-Trust" source="Orion">National Highways Infra Trust</keyword> (<keyword id="49448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NHAI" source="Orion">NHAI</keyword> InvIT), the infrastructure investment trust sponsored by <keyword id="83263" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Highway-Authority-of-India" source="Orion">National Highway Authority of India</keyword> (NHAI) to support the Central government's <keyword id="11929270" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Monetization-Pipeline" source="Orion">National Monetization Pipeline</keyword>, has raised a sum of ₹1,430 crore from domestic and international investors through placement of its units, for part funding its acquisition of three additional road projects from NHAI. The placement of units with institutional investors, witnessed strong demand from both existing investors, who reposed their commitment by participating in the process, as well as new investors. The units have been subscribed by a gamut of institutional investors including Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, State Bank of India, SBI Pension Fund, SBI Mutual Fund, IOCL Employee Provident Fund, L&amp;T Staff Provident Fund, Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Karamchari Pension Fund, TATA AIG and <keyword id="5050251" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="star-union-daiichi-life-insurance" source="Orion">Star Union Daiichi Life Insurance</keyword>. NHAI subscribed to the units through preferential allotment to maintain its unitholding of at least 15 per cent. The units were subscribed through a book build process at Rs 109 per unit, at a premium over floor price of Rs 107.12 per unit. In addition to the above, NHAI InvIT has also filed a prospectus with SEBI for issuance of Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) to raise Rs 1,500 crore. The NCDs would carry a coupon of 7.90 per cent payable semi-annually and would be available for subscription by both retail and institutional investors. NHAI InvIT raises ₹1,430 crore through follow-on issuance

The rapid pace has also driven up the cost of land acquisition and now, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) may step on the brake. The cost per hectare for land acquired by NHAI has jumped to nearly ₹2.8 crore this year from ₹9 crore just before the latest land act was passed four years ago, according to a Kotak Institutional Equities report last week. And as the cost of land increased, the amount of land acquired has fallen anywhere between 15-20% per kilometre (km) of road completed. Meanwhile, toll collection from traffic has grown half as much, at the rate of 10% every year, in the last four years. The higher cost of land, along with lack of funds and risk appetite among lenders, may slow down the pace of road construction this year, according to CARE Ratings. Annual highway construction and expansion had increased from 4,410 km in financial year ending March 2015 to 10,800 km at the end of March 2020.

India's National Highways Authority is paying three times more for land-- and that may slow down new projects

For the next <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=fiscal+year&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">fiscal year</a>, FY17, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=road+transport+and+highways+ministry+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">road transport and highways ministry</a> is hoping a budgetary allocation of Rs 86,000 crore so it can fund its <keyword id="2377208" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="highway-expansion">highway expansion</keyword> plan in line with the government’s plans to boost public spending and create more construction sector jobs. 
 
The amount that is being sought by the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=finance+ministry+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">finance ministry</a> is almost Rs 29,000 crore, or about 50%, higher than what the roads ministry had received in the last budget. 
 
According to ministry official, a major part of this grant would be used for the government’s programme to construct greenfield economic corridors mostly as expressways. 
 
Nearly 44 such economic corridors have been planned to connect ports, backward areas and several district headquarters to existing highway networks. 
 
“The target for the next financial year would be to construct around 15,000 km of roads. This year we could do around 9,000 km, which is a little less the target for current fiscal,” the official told ET. 
 The <keyword id="335681" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Road-Ministry">road ministry</keyword> is looking forward to building to a target of constructing 10,000 km of highways this fiscal. Road construction pace has picked up this year to reach an all-time high of 27 km per day, which the ministry expects could be raised to over 30 km a day in the next couple of months as construction clearances for several new projects have already been received. 
 The official also said the ministry would raise money through <keyword id="87432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways-Authority-of-India">National Highways Authority of India</keyword> (NHAI) bonds as well. However, the amount is yet to be finalised.

Road Ministry wants 50% more funds in Budget allocation, several plans in pipeline

<keyword id="87432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Highways-Authority-of-India">National Highways Authority of India</keyword> (NHAI) has recorded highest Rs 86.2 crore daily <keyword id="549988" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="toll-collection">toll collection</keyword> on Sunday, its Chairman Sukhbir Singh Sandhu said. The highest daily toll collection via electronic system of FASTags has also been recorded at Rs 50 crore (single day collection) in January 2020 as compared to Rs 23 crore in November 2019. "The NHAI has recorded its highest toll collection on a daily basis at Rs 86.2 crore two days back," Sandhu said at National Highways Excellence Award 2019 here on Tuesday.
 Sandhu said the daily transactions via FASTags have also risen to around 30 lakh per day in January 2020 from 8 lakh in July 2019.
 He said the Jodhpur toll plaza in Jaipur region has outperformed others in implementation of FASTags with around 91 per cent of toll collection taking place via FASTags.
 Toll plazas in Bhopal and Gandhinagar have also performed well in FASTag implementation, he added.
 As of December 2019, over 1 crore FASTags have been issued with over 30 lakh FASTags issued in November and December, following daily sales of 1.5-2 lakh FASTags.
 The government has rolled out FASTag-based electronic toll collection mechanism from December 15 cross all toll plazas of the NHAI.
 The government has mandated the use of FASTags across at least 75 per cent lanes of toll plazas and has restricted use of cash mode of payment to a maximum of 25 per cent lanes of toll plazas.
 FASTags-based toll collection system has been rolled out across over 527 national highways.

Indian highway toll booths record highest-ever daily collections

The UP government has ordered for separate lanes for MLAs and MPs at toll plazas across the state, including national highways. Additional chief secretary <keyword id="657683" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sadakant">Sadakant</keyword> has written to district magistrates across UP dated July 15, as per rules notified by the Centre, no road toll would be charged from any <keyword id="28100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MLA">MLA</keyword> or MLC of the UP assembly, or MPs from the state. "All district magistrates will ensure that toll plazas under their jurisdiction will provide a separate lane to MPs and MLAs in the event of traffic jams," the letter said, also saying that authorities of the <keyword id="87432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Highways-Authority-of-India">National Highways Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="49448" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="nhai">NHAI</keyword>) are expected to cooperate in the matter. An additional district magistrate said on condition of anonymity told TOI, "Legislators and parliamentarians hardly move without four to five vehicles when they go to Lucknow or Delhi, if they travel on national and state highways where the toll plazas are erected. Though they are already exempted from paying toll tax, when plaza employees ask the unofficial vehicles accompanying them to pay up, these 'honourable' MLAs or MPs and their followers turn rude, sometimes violent. In such cases, the law and order situation is also affected."

Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh wants separate lanes for MPs and MLAs

One of the biggest construction companies in the world, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=China+Railway+Construction+Corporation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">China Railway Construction Corporation</a>, is keen on investing whopping Rs 35,000-40,000 crore in India’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=road+and+highways&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">roads and highway sector</a>. 
 
Talks were held between top executives of the Chinese major and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Highways+Authority+of+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">National Highways Authority of India</a> (NHAI) Chairman Raghav Chandra. 
"They are keen on bidding for around 3,000-km highway contracts. They will be participating in hybrid annuity, build-operate-transfer (BOT) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) models," Chandra told ET. 
 
If the bidding sees light of the day, it would be the single largest foreign investment in India’s roads sector and would help ndia's road transport and highways ministry achieve the target of 40 km per day, or 15,000 km for the current financial year. 
 
The corporation could then also bid for several expressway projects that are considered to be high traction in terms of return on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=investment&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">investment</a>. 
The Chinese corporation builds 60 per cent of highways and 80 per cent of railway tracks in China. 
 
Recently, many foreign companies and investors have shown keen interest in investing in road projects. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nitin+gadkari&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari</a> also attracted investors from US to invest in India. 
 
Investor interest in the sector had weakened drastically after 2010 due to difficulties related to land acquisition and getting various approvals, besides public opposition to toll collection. Projects worth less than Rs 10,000 crore were awarded in FY15.

This top Chinese construction company wants to invest Rs 40,000 crore in India’s highway contract

New Delhi, Mar 31 () The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Tuesday said it is putting all efforts in fight against COVID-19 and its officials across the county have voluntarily decided to pledge a day's salary to PM CARES Fund. The highway authority said it is ensuring smooth passage for all the vehicles carrying essential goods and emergency services on national highways. "Food, water and other support is being extended to the drivers carrying essential goods as well as people stranded around the national highways near toll plazas, construction camps and shelter homes so that they stay wherever they are and avoid travel," it said in a statement. Incident management services like highway ambulance, patrol vehicles etc are actively working in close co-ordination with the local administration of the respective state governments, the statement said. "NHAI officials across the country have decided to voluntarily contribute their one day salary to the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) Fund to strengthen the nation's fight against COVID-19," it said. The authority said it is putting a united effort with all its stake holders during such distressed times and is confident that India will emerge victorious in this battle against the coronavirus. The government has rolled out the FASTag-based toll collection system across more than 527 national highways in the country. "In order to further increase digital collection of user fee via FASTag at NH fee plazas, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to waive off the FASTag cost of Rs 100 for NHAI FASTag between February 15 and 29, 2020," the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. Road users can visit any authorised point-of-sale location with a valid registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle and get an NHAI FASTag free of cost, it said. NHAI FASTags can be purchased from all national highway fee plazas, regional transport offices, common service centres, transport hubs, and petrol pumps, among others, it added. "To search for the nearest NHAI FASTag point-of-sale locations, one may download MyFASTag App, or visit www.ihmcl.com or Call 1033 NH helpline number," the statement said. The applicable security deposit and minimum balance amount for FASTag wallet shall, however, remain unchanged. NHAI had earlier announced for free NHAI FASTag from November 22 to December 15 last year. Last month, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said after the FASTag system on national highways for electronic toll collection, the revenue per day has swelled to Rs 87 crore, from Rs 68 crore. New Delhi, Mar 28 () Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday asked NHAI Chairman and toll operators across national highways to provide food, water and other necessary support to migrant workers.The directions came amid reports that migrant workers are facing severe hardships while stranded at various parts in the country on account of nationwide lockdown in the wake of coronavirus pandemic."I have advised Chairman NHAI and Highway Concessioners/Toll operators to consider providing food, water or any kind of support to migrant workers/citizens who are trying to reach to their respective native places."At this time of crisis we have to be compassionate for our fellow citizens," Road Transport and Highways Minister Gadkari said.The minister expressed hope that toll operators will respond to his call positively.Earlier, Gadkari had asked NHAI to suspend toll on all national highways to ease transportation of essential goods and supplies.The suspension of toll collection on national highways will ease supplies of essential goods across the country while facilitating movement of patients and needy people who have obtained curfew passes, Gadkari had said.Urging people to adhere to the nationwide lockdown, the minister has said suspension of toll is for people who have to venture out for necessary travel."Even though it's a complete lockdown all over the country, there are provisions to issue necessary passes/permissions for those people who approach the relevant authorities and convince their necessities to travel," he had said.Such passes are being issued by local authorities so that the needy people can travel, he added."Suspension of toll collection is for such people who travel in private vehicles. This will ease their journey without wasting time at the toll plaza. "Toll collection has been suspended to reduce inconvenience to such people who have been issued curfew pass by local administration/authorities for all vehicles transporting essential goods and even the vehicles carrying patients," the minister said.At the same time, he urged people to stay indoors and follow advice of local authorities to fight the spread of coronavirus.The government earlier this week temporarily suspended toll collection on national highways to ease emergency services in view of the coronavirus outbreak.This will not only reduce inconvenience to emergency services but also save critical time, Gadkari had said.Maintenance of roads and availability of emergency resources at toll plazas will continue as usual.Earlier, the road transport and highways ministry had advised the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to follow the home ministry's guidelines about toll plaza operations following the lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.The prevailing condition may be treated as "Force Majeure" of concession or contract agreement in terms of the finance ministry, it said. Gadkari asks NHAI chief, toll operators to ensure food, water support to migrant workers

New Delhi, Jan 23 () Terming delays in highway projects as "unacceptable", Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday asked officials and developers to strictly adhere to project schedules.
 Gadkari also launched online web portal 'GATI' on the pattern of 'PRAGATI', the portal used by the Prime Ministers' Officer for monitoring projects.
 "Delays in projects are unacceptable. Adhere strictly to project schedules," Gadkari told officials and developers, while reviewing Rs 3-lakh crore projects, including delayed ones.
 Any inter-ministerial issue holding up a project may be brought to the notice of the ministry for intervention to expedite resolution, Gadkari said.
 Projects from southern and central zones, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Telangana, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, were on review on Thursday.
 A total of 500 highway projects worth Rs 3 lakh crore are being taken up for review on Thursday and Friday with a view to fast-track them.
 Gadkari, along with Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways V K Singh, launched online web portal 'GATI', which has been created by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on the lines of PRAGATI.
 An official said "Gadkari will also personally monitor the projects".
 The portal 'GATI' can be accessed from NHAI's website, and contractors and concessionaires can raise any project-related issues on the platform, according to a statement by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
 "The issue will immediately come to the notice of everyone...HQ NHAI including top management, and immediate action will be taken by the concerned officer duly updating on the portal," it said.
 The issues raised on 'GATI' will be daily monitored by a team of NHAI officers and will be constantly reviewed by the senior officers of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the statement said.
 This will bring transparency and speed up the decision making in highway construction, it added.
 All developers, contractors and officers of NHAI are linked to the portal and it will help sharing of all project-related information for speedy implementation.
 The projects from northeastern states, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Ladakh, Haryana, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh will be reviewed Friday.

New Delhi, Feb 6 () Dilip Buildcon Ltd on Thursday said it has bagged a road project worth Rs 860.50 crore in Chhattisgarh. "The company has been declared as L-1 bidder in the tender floated by the National Highways Authority of India for the...project in the state of Chhattisgarh," the company said in a filing to the BSE. The project, having a length of 39.30 km, is to be completed in two years, it said. The project entails four-laning of Pathrapali-Kathghora "Pkg-II of Bilaspur-Kathghora section of NH-111 new NH-130 in the state of Chhattisgarh under Bharatmala on Hybrid Annuity Mode" by the National Highways Authority of India, the company said. Shares of Dilip Buildcon were trading 1.83 per cent higher at Rs 390 apiece in the morning session on BSE. SID RVK

<keyword id="3711125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pod-taxis">Pod taxis</keyword>, a result of a project called the Metrino-a PRT system in which pods are suspended from an overhead rail -has been under consideration for a while and will finally debut in <keyword id="6361586" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gurgaon">Gurgaon</keyword> 
 The <keyword id="87432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways-Authority-of-India">National Highways Authority of India</keyword> has laid the groundwork to roll out India's first personal rapid transit (PRT) network and will invite global bids for the project within the next fortnight. The pilot project will span a 13km stretch from the Gurgaon-Delhi border to Badshapur Mod on Sohna Road and is estimated to cost Rs 850 crore. 
 
Every pod can take up to five passengers. For the pilot project route, 16 stations have been planned, starting near Ambience Mall. A personal rapid transit (PRT) network is made up of small automated vehicles running at close intervals on a guideway with docking stations for passengers to get on and get off.While a pod can accommodate up to five people, there there is also an option to hire an entire pod that will take a passenger straight to the destination, skipping the scheduled stops. The average speed of the pods is 60kmph. 
 
A senior NHAI official said the network would be built within a year of the contract being awarded. "Pod taxi systems are best suited for this. We are keeping our options open, though, so that private players can come up with best system, including skyrail," the official said. A skyrail is also a PRT system, but is more similar to a ropeway . 
 
The NHAI official said land required for the project is already available with it and Haryana government agencies. The project does not need forest and environmental clearance. As for financing, the entire investment will be made by the private company that sets up the PRT. Under the terms of the agreement, the company will recover its investment in 25 years through tickets. 
 Union road transport and highways minister <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> had announced last year that Metrinos will run between Dhaula Kuan in Delhi and Manesar. The overhead network for Metrinos has been planned along the expressway . Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had travelled in a pod in Masdar City during his last visit to the United Arab Emirates. 
 
The Punjab and Haryana governments had, in the past, announced a rollout of pod taxis in Amritsar and Gurgaon, but these never came to fruition. 
 According to estimates prepared by the NHAI, while while building a kilometre of Metro costs at least Rs 250 crore and of monorail Rs 200 crore, the <keyword id="6714406" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Metrino">Metrino</keyword> system can be built with just Rs 70 crore. It's lighter as well. 
 
"The NHAI will roll out the project soon. We have set a target of a year. Subsequently , we could extend this to Dhaula Kuan and Manesar on each side," said the NHAI official.
