The <keyword id="3274960" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-High-Speed-Rail-Corporation-Limited">National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited</keyword> (NHSRCL) on Saturday said that it has opened two <keyword id="1115984" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Technical-bids">technical bids</keyword> for <keyword id="34617" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="construction">construction</keyword> or building of bridges for the 508 km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor in the state of <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword> and <keyword id="382155" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dadra">Dadra</keyword> and Nagar Haveli in which nine companies have participated.<br /><br />NHSRCL spokesperson Sushma Gaur said that the technical bids for contract packages of P-1(B) and P-1(C) for construction or building of bridges for the MAHSR corridor in the state of Gujarat as well union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.<br /><br />She said that as of now, 5 bidders for <keyword id="10880154" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="p-1">P-1</keyword> (C) whereas four bidders for P-1 (B) have submitted their bids for the package.<br /><br />She said that the P-1 (C) package includes construction of bridges for double line High Speed railway for four PSC Bridges and seven steel truss bridges between Zaroli Village at Maharashtra -- Gujarat Border and Vadodara, in Gujarat and the union territory of Dadar and Nagar Haveli for the project.<br /><br />Gaur said that for the P-1 (C) package, Ranjit Buildcon Limited, MG Contractors Pvt Ltd, KEC-SAM India JV and GRIL-GPT JV have participated in the technical bids.<br /><br />Meanwhile, package P-1 (B) includes the construction of bridges for double line high speed railway for one PSC Bridge and four steel truss bridges between Vadodara and <keyword id="5065" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ahmedabad">Ahmedabad</keyword>, in Gujarat for the project.<br /><br />She said that Ranjit Buildcon Limited, MG Contractors Pvt Ltd, KEC-SAM India JV and GRIL-GPT JV and URC Construction Pvt Ltd have participated in the technical bids.<br /><br />Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> and then Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe had on September 14, 2017 laid the foundation stone for the ambitious ₹1.08 lakh crore ($17 billion) project.<br /><br />Bullet trains are expected to run at 320 km per hour covering the 508-km stretch in about two hours. Tech bids open for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train bridge project, says NHSRCL

L&T bags new large order in Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project

<br /><ul><li><strong>The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) requires 1,415 hectares of land, however,  it has so far managed to acquire only around 0.9 hectares.</strong></li><li><strong>The NHSRCL floated its first tender for building a bridge in the Navsari district of <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword> today. </strong></li><li><strong>In all, around 60 bridges are to be built in the 508-km high-speed corridor</strong></li></ul>Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s pet project the $17 billion <keyword id="490067" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bullet-train">bullet train</keyword> connecting Mumbai to <keyword id="5065" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ahmedabad">Ahmedabad</keyword> has been the recipient of much criticism and has had to deal with numerous hurdles from the get-go. <br /><br />While many <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-35099426" data-type="tilCustomLink">wonder</a> that when the basic <keyword id="17408" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="infrastructure">infrastructure</keyword> of the nation is crumbling, does it make sense to pump in so much money into this one project that will comparatively benefit only a fraction of the society, others have raised concerns about the impact on the environment.<br /><br />That question and criticism aside, the biggest issue plaguing the project is that of farmers from Gujarat and Maharashtra refusing to part with their land for the project. <br /><br />The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) requires 1,415 hectares of land for which it has allocated around ₹100 billion. However, according to a report in the <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/first-bullet-train-tender-goes-out-for-a-bridge-5247758/">Indian Express</a> it has so far managed to acquire only around 0.9 hectares.<br /><br />Today (6 July), however, the NHSRCL has made a teeny tiny headway and has floated its first tender for building a bridge in the Navsari district of Gujarat. In all, around 60 bridges are to be built in the 508-km high-speed corridor. <br /><br />The NHSRCL has resorted to novel methods like recruiting women from the 73 villages where the land is to be acquired to help with the negotiation process, a method that is apparently working. These women have been successful in facilitating a dialogue between the heads of the villages and NHSRCL engineers for the joint measurement survey. In fact, they have managed to get the survey team into villages where earlier the team was threatened with violence and couldn’t even enter.<br /><br />Apart from this, a team of 15 women from various blocks have been roped in to explain the compensation packages being offered and the exact land requirements to the villagers.<br /><br />But, all things considered, this is a minute step forward for this mammoth project. It is still unclear whether the deadline to start civil work by December 2018-January 2019 will be met. The NHSRCL spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar, however, is quite confident and told the <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/first-bullet-train-tender-goes-out-for-a-bridge-5247758/">Indian Express</a> that they are “on schedule as per the timeline of the project”.<br /><br /><strong><em>Representative image used.</em></strong><br />

<p>The L0 maglev train floats above its track and is propelled by powerful magnets, eliminating friction that limits the speeds of conventional <keyword id="6360847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trains">trains</keyword>.</p>
<p>The Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/japan-building-magnetic-levitation-train-2012-11" target="_blank">unveiled a prototype of the L0 train</a> in November 2012, with plans to run it from Tokyo to Nagoyo, a 40-minute journey, starting service in 2027.</p>
<p>By 2045, the maglev train should connect Tokyo and Osaka, Japan's second largest city, and seat 1,000 passengers.</p>
<p>In a June 3 test, five train cars were pulled by a special maintenance vehicle, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/10098065/Japan-tests-310mph-bullet-train.html" target="_blank">according to the Telegraph</a>, proving they levitate above the track, as intended.</p>
<p>Japan has been operating high-speed bullet trains for nearly 60 years, which now travel at about 199 mph.</p>
<p>In the United States, <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> secretary Ray LaHood has <a href="http://www.ushsr.com/ushsrmap.html" target="_blank">called for a national high-speed rail system</a> on which trains would travel at about 220 mph, but that remains a pipe dream for the time being.</p>
<p>California is inching toward <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/californias-high-speed-rail-dead-2013-4" target="_blank">building a 220 mph high-speed rail line</a>, but cost and legal issues have held the project back.</p>

"There isn't another project we could do that would have a greater impact on our oil consumption than fixing our rail system and restoring passenger service."</p><p>Ten years later, little has changed. A new <a href="http://www.goeuro.com/trains/high-speed">ranking of high-speed rail networks by nation</a> from GoEuro, a travel search engine, puts the U.S. at 19th out of the 20 countries assessed. Bolivia isn't on the list, but the U.S. does rank below Turkey and Uzbekistan.</p><p>GoEuro ranked all countries with high-speed rail lines (as defined by its slightly complex criteria) and made some arbitrary choices as to which factors matter most. It put the biggest emphasis on population coverage, as it should, but its second most important factor was record speed, which is silly.</p><p>America would benefit more from 10 train lines that can go 150 miles per hour than one that can go 250. Operating speed, which is the third most valued factor in this ranking, is more useful.</p><p>Ranked on population coverage alone, the U.S. is also second-to-last, with only 3.7 percent of the population served by high-speed rail. Arguably, the U.S. should not have been included on the list at all, as its sole operational high-speed rail service, the Acela on the Northeast corridor, only attains the 150-mile-per-hour speeds that GoEuro ascribes to it on a tiny portion of its route. Still, the basic truth that the U.S. has fallen far behind Asia and Europe is accurately captured here.</p><p>Our global economic competitors have built high-speed rail lines that bring their major cities <a href="http://grist.org/cities/what-america-can-learn-from-europes-high-speed-trains/">closer together</a>, while we lurch along on a system that can't be trusted to <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/amtrak-crash">safely</a> and reliably bring riders from New York to our nation's capital.</p><p>From Beijing to Shanghai, you can reach speeds of 180 miles per hour, covering 819 miles in five hours. He made planning for building high-speed rail lines a major component of the Recovery Act in 2009. Some critics, Kunstler among them, <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/corporate-responsibility/quote-of-the-day-jim-kunstler-on-high-speed-rail.html">argued</a> that we might be better off putting those resources into fixing up our decrepit regular passenger rail network instead of building a new high-speed one. Partly, that's because the $8 billion allocated for high-speed rail was just a fraction of what would be needed to build the <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/high-speed-rail">proposed network</a>. Constructing the line from L.A. to San Francisco alone would cost roughly five times that much.</p><p>Obama proposed much more funding in later budgets, but congressional Republicans <a href="http://www.governing.com/topics/finance/gov-has-high-speed-rail-been-derailed.html">greeted</a> those requests exactly as you would expect them to. Several Republican governors <a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2011/0216/Derailed-Third-GOP-governor-rejects-Obama-high-speed-rail-plan">rejected</a> the administration's high-speed rail proposals for their states. Republicans may be about to nominate an economic nationalist for president, but beating China takes a back seat to penny-pinching and transit-hating.</p><p>The only high-speed rail system that looks likely to come to fruition in the U.S. in the foreseeable future is the <a href="http://www.hsr.ca.gov/docs/newsroom/fact%20sheets/Big_Picture_FINAL_060515.pdf">California line</a> currently being built from San Diego to San Francisco and Sacramento, which is drawing heavily on state funds.</p><p>GoEuro notes dryly that the "USA and Russia, both once in competition during the Space Race," are now struggling just to move their citizens around swiftly on land. Well, Russia is actually in 15th place, so unlike the space race, we're losing this one. Well-known rail leaders Japan, South Korea, China, and France are the top four nations, in that order. Spain, which is persistently <a href="http://fortune.com/2015/05/11/spain-economic-recovery/">economically troubled</a>, ranks fifth. A new study proves the US should be 'ashamed' of its railroad system

High speed rail is one step closer to reality in Illinois

It will take six whole years for the Mumbai­-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor but the Railway Minister says that the fare will be less than airfare.<br /> Railway Minister <keyword id="6356597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suresh-Prabhu">Suresh Prabhu</keyword> today in <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> said the ambitious project is doable and the highspeed train project would be cost effective too. The high speed bullet train is expected to cover 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in about two hours, running at a maximum speed of 350 kmph and operating speed of 320 kmph. At present, Duronto Express takes about seven hours to cover the distance between the two financial centres.<br />

Talking about the massive funding received for the particular project, Prabhu said "there was no regional bias. Every state has got more than double than earlier." The high speed rail project has been sanctioned with technical and financial assistance from the government of Japan and the joint feasibility study of the project has already been done by Japanese International Agency.<br />

The 508km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor is estimated to cost about Rs 97,636 crore, 81 per cent of the funding for the project will come in form of a loan from Japan. The project cost includes possible cost escalation, interest during construction and import duties. The project is being funded by Japan with a soft loan for 50 years at 0.1 per cent annual interest with 15 years' moratorium. Rolling stock and other equipment like signalling and power system will be imported from Japan as per the loan agreement.<br />

Railways has spelt out its policy with regard to running of high speed and semi­high speed trains by identification of potential routes for both kinds of train services. Prabhu said feasibility studies for other high speed corridors have been awarded to various railway companies. Delhi­-Mumbai high speed corridor has been awarded to the consortium of the Third Railway Survey and Design Institute Group Corporation (Chinese consultant) and Lahmeyer International from India. Feasibility study of high speed corridors on Mumbai­- Chennai, Delhi­-Kolkata, Delhi­-Nagpur and Mumbai­-Nagpur have also been awarded to different global consultants.<br />

Prabhu said railways have identified nine corridors for feasibility of semi-­high speed rail. Delhi­-Chandigarh, Chennai­-Bengaluru­-Mysore, Delhi­-Kanpur, Nagpur­-Bilaspur, Mumbai-­Goa, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai­-Hyderabad and Nagpur­-Secunderabd are being considered for semi-­high speed routes.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="262185" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amtrak">Amtrak</keyword> has unveiled a plan to further connect the US by rail but it doesn't include high-speed rail.</li><li>New routes will be added and current routes will be upgraded as Amtrak aims to repair its network.</li><li>Private companies and states have taken up the costly task of building high-speed rail on their own.</li></ul><p>Americans are all-aboard for high-speed rail but Amtrak's new rail plan is putting the brakes on bullet <keyword id="41341" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="train">train</keyword> dreams. </p><p>Amtrak is getting ready to spend $80 billion of the federal government's money as part of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-2-trillion-infrastructure-plan-roads-bridges-broadband-power-2021-3">President Joe Biden's planned $4 trillion infrastructure bills</a>. The "<a href="http://media.amtrak.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Amtrak-Connects-US-Fact-Sheet.pdf">Amtrak Connects US</a>" plan calls for greater rail connectivity across the US with the addition of new routes and improvement of old ones in a major step forward for America's rail system.  </p><p>But one phrase is notably missing from Amtrak's proposal: high-speed rail. Amtrak's fact sheet doesn't mention the phrase even once.</p><p>Rather, Amtrak is using the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/map-amtrak-could-build-expanded-rail-network-biden-infrastructure-plan-2021-4">billions to give service to rail-strapped cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Nashville, Tennessee, and upgrade existing lines</a>. Not one penny will be spent towards building a clean-slate high-speed rail line even though getting America's high-speed rail network in line with those in Europe and Asia is a desire for many Americans.</p><p>Jim Mathews, president and CEO of the Rail Passengers Association, told Insider that Amtrak may still be decades away from true high-speed rail and is still readjusting from an era of extreme cost-cutting. </p><p>"As recently as three years ago, Amtrak senior leadership was out talking about how routes have to make a profit and long-distance routes shouldn't exist," Mathews said, referring to the tenure of former Delta Air Lines chief executive officer Richard Anderson that saw <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amtrak-new-contemporary-dining-car-review-lake-shore-limited-2019-10">Amtrak's most nostalgic offerings cut in a bid to save costs</a>.</p><p><em><strong>Read More:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/issues-that-could-tank-bidens-infrastructure-plan-congress-salt-taxes-2021-4">Here are 9 hurdles Biden's infrastructure plan would have to overcome in Congress before it can become law</a></em></p><p>Before Amtrak can even consider a brand-new high-speed rail network, there's still a backlog of repairs to work through on its existing lines. And unlike regional transit authorities, Amtrak's network stretches from sea to shining sea, leaving a lot to maintain and update. </p><p>"There's all these sort of boring infrastructure investments that you got to do," Mathews said.  </p><p>On the Northeast Corridor, where <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/riding-amtrak-acela-boston-to-new-york-during-pandemic-review-2020-12">Amtrak has its only high-speed service with the Acela</a>, Mathews said that it would cost around $50 billion just to get the line to a "state of good repair." That's 62.5% of Amtrak's proposed $80 billion funding from the infrastructure bill in just repairs alone and not even laying the foundation for true high-speed rail in the Northeast.</p><p>True high-speed rail would require new infrastructure, including straight lines of track so <keyword id="6360847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trains">trains</keyword> can achieve their top speeds. In congested regions like the Northeast, that means spending millions if not billions just to purchase property along the line's planned route. </p><p>"Politically, high-speed has a different ring to it and I think Amtrak is probably unwilling to step into that," Mathews said. "From their point of view, they're like, 'Hey, we just want to run our trains. We want to run more trains and we want them to be on time.'"</p><p>Amtrak is already spread thin in its languishing nationwide network. Existing infrastructure across the US has fallen into disrepair and battles with freight railroads prohibit Amtrak from being competitive on existing lines. </p><p>Private companies have instead spearheaded the effort to bring high-speed rail to the US. Brightline built a high-speed line to connect West Palm Beach and Miami in Florida that will soon be connected all the way to Orlando. In Texas, the Texas Central Railroad is developing a high-speed rail line that will connect Dallas and Houston in only 90 minutes. </p><p>California has even taken up the mantle with a new high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Construction is currently underway with the 800-mile line taking at least 14 years to complete at an estimated cost of at least $68 billion, according to <a href="https://www.architectmagazine.com/design/buildings/california-officials-break-ground-on-high-speed-rail_o#:~:text=After%20a%20two%2Dyear%20wait%2C%20brought%20by%20legal%20setbacks%2C,ground%20today%20in%20Fresno%2C%20Calif.&amp;text=Projected%20to%20be%20at%20least,least%2014%20years%20to%20complete.ete.">Architect Magazine</a>. </p><p>Amtrak is introducing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amtrak-new-acela-train-cars-photo-2019-8">new trains to the Acela line but those will only travel slightly faster than the current train sets</a>. And pre-pandemic non-stop service between New York and Washington still took two hours and 30 minutes, despite being a comparable distance to the planned route between Dallas and Houston.</p><h2>"What about grandma?"</h2><p>Critics of Amtrak and its money-losing ways look too much at the big picture, according to Mathews, and not at the smaller journeys that are more in line with Amtrak's original congressional charter. Only around 10% of riders take the full length of a long-distance service like the Empire Builder between Chicago and Seattle, for example, whereas most customers are taking the train between intermediary stops. </p><p>"The vast majority of trips take place in between," Mathews said. And those short-distance trips between say Staples, Minnesota and Wolf Point, Montana, where convenient air service is a distant dream, is Amtrak's bread and butter. Fares are comparatively lower than flying and trains can better accommodate passengers that face issues when flying, whether it be because they require medical devices or the nearest airport is hours away. </p><p>Keeping those smaller cities connected is also the reason why Amtrak rushed to get long-distance trains back to daily service after they were reduced to three-times-weekly service during the pandemic. Restoring them to daily service may have seemed counter-intuitive from a revenue perspective but the move ensures more Americans that rely on the rails have access to it. </p><p>When Amtrak does eventually enter the high-speed rail realm, it may be relegated to the lines that private companies haven't already scooped up. But Mathews believes that's alright because the rail corporation's purview, after all, is to serve the entire country - profitable or not. </p>

By comparison, the second biggest high-speed rail network - in Spain - measures just <a href="https://www.eurail.com/en/get-inspired/trains-europe/high-speed-trains/ave"><span>1,926 miles</span></a>.</p><p>But by the end of 2018, China's will get even longer.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">China Railway Corp, the country's government-owned train operator, will soon finish the last phase of the <a href="http://www.expressraillink.hk/en/home/">Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link</a>, a high-speed rail line spanning more than 80 miles.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Construction is near complete in Hong Kong, where China is building a 4 million-square-foot station for the new trains, as <a href="https://www.hongkongfp.com/2018/03/24/express-rail-link-trains-named-vibrant-express-launch-expected-september/">reported by</a> The Hong Kong Free Press.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While the seven-year, <a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/economy/article/1885271/hong-kong-rail-operator-be-bailed-out-government-guangzhou">$10.7 billion</a> project is certainly impressive, it has faced much controversy surrounding its cost, its construction delays, and how it could affect Hong Kong's political autonomy.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Take a look below.</span></p>

China's 'bullet train' network is the largest in the world - and it's about to get even bigger

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Brightline announced a deal with rail unions to build a 218-mile, high-speed line from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. </li><li>The company plans to connect Las Vegas to Southern California via rail capable of traveling 200 mph.</li></ul><p>Rail company Brightline <a href="https://www.gobrightline.com/press-room/brightline-west-high-speed-rail-labor-coalition" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced an agreement</a> last week with a group of rail worker unions to build a $10 billion,  high-speed train connecting Las Vegas to Los Angeles.</p><p>Brightline's agreement — made with the High Speed Rail Labor Coalition, a collective of 13 rail unions that represent over 160,000 railroad workers across freight and passenger rail — greenlit the development of a 218-mile rail line between the two cities, according to the company's announcement. </p><p>"Our nation's first high-speed rail system will be operated and maintained by union labor, a statement of the strength of the American workforce," Mike Reininger, CEO of Brightline Holdings, said in a statement. </p><p>Reininger continued: "As the most shovel-ready high-speed rail project in the United States, we are one step closer to leveling the playing field against transit and infrastructure projects around the world, and we are proud to be using America's most skilled workers to get there."</p><p>Brightline estimates the "Brightline West" project will have an economic impact of about $10 billion on the area, creating about 35,000 construction jobs, as well as 1,000 permanent jobs at stops along the line in Southern California. </p><p>The company also estimates the Brightline West project could attract about 12 million of the 50 million one-way trips taken annually between Las Vegas and Los Angeles annually, 85% of which are taken by bus or car.</p><p>Brightline said it believes the draw away from car and bus trips will result in about 400,000 fewer tons of carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas, from being put into the atmosphere per year.</p><p>A Brightline executive <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/travel/article/brightline-west-train-las-vegas-la-17811506.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told SFGate</a> the company expects to break ground this year, and hopes to finish construction in 2027.</p><p>The train will eventually be capable of traveling around 200 miles per hour, meaning a trip across the whole 218-mile line would take a little over an hour. A Las Vegas <a href="https://www.vegas.com/traveltips/top-10-tips-for-driving-from-la-to-vegas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tourism website</a> estimates that a trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas by car takes an average of four hours, depending on traffic conditions.</p><p>The rail line is set to run from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, according to the <a href="https://www.gobrightline.com/brightline-west" target="_blank" rel="noopener">company's website</a>. The press release said the rail line will have stops in Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, and Hesperia, California.</p><p>Brightline currently operates a rail <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/virgin-trains-investor-wes-edens-interview-brightline-florida-passenger-rail-2019-4">service</a> that has several stations throughout Florida, and is also set to open an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-world-train-orlando-airport-miami-brightline-2020-11">extension this year</a> connecting Disney World in Orlando with its <a href="https://www.gobrightline.com/brightline-florida" target="_blank" rel="noopener">existing stations</a> in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, among others.</p>

Whole project is a 'green' disaster!"</p><p>Newsom responded <a href="https://twitter.com/GavinNewsom/status/1095867826202505216">calling the president's tweet</a> "fake news."</p><p>"We're building high-speed rail, connecting the Central Valley and beyond," Newsom tweeted. "This is CA's money, allocated by Congress for this project. We're not giving it back."</p><p>Newsom also took a jab at the president's proposed US-Mexico border wall, which Congress has been loath to fund, tweeting: "Also, desperately searching for some wall $$??"</p><p>Trump forced a 35-day government shutdown, because a stopgap funding measure to fund the government didn't contain a requested $5.7 billion dollars to pay for part of the wall. A current deal being reached in Congress would fund $1.375 billion for fencing, and it's unclear if the president will sign it by February 15 and avert another partial government shutdown.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>January 9, 2019. REUTERS/Leah Millis</span></p><p class="caption">President Donald Trump talks to reporters in the Oval Office on January 9, 2019.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>The truth is somewhere in the middle</h2><p>As is the case with many political spats on Twitter, the truth lies somewhere in the middle, and is far more complicated than can be expressed in a tweet.</p><p>On Tuesday, in his State of the State address, Newsom was far less enthusiastic about the proposed high-speed rail than his predecessor Gov. Jerry Brown.</p><p>"Let's level about the high-speed rail," Newsom said. "Let's be real: The current project as planned would cost too much and, respectfully, take too long. Right now, there simply isn't a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to LA. I wish there were."</p><p>He did, however, say that the state would complete the section from Bakersfield to the city of Merced, and also finish environmental studies for sections from Los Angeles to San Francisco.</p><p>A bond measure for California's high-speed rail train, an ambitious plan to connect the state via a bullet train, was first approved by voters back in 2008. Congress, under Democratic control, then appropriated <a href="https://docs.house.gov/meetings/PW/PW14/20180809/108631/HHRG-115-PW14-Wstate-ScovelIIIC-20180809.pdf">$3.5 billion</a> for the project.</p><p>However, the high-speed rail has faltered due to mismanagement and other factors, the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-bullet-train-california-problems-20190213-story.html">Los Angeles Times reported</a>. The two issues that Newsom cited as the most prohibitive (cost and time to completion) have also been issues. The cost spiked from estimates of <a href="https://www.scpr.org/programs/airtalk/2019/02/13/64181/let-s-be-real-newsom-says-he-ll-shorten-bullet-tra/">$33 billion</a> to estimates of $77 billion or more, and the completion date has been pushed from 2020 to 2033.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cahsr_map.svg">WikiMedia Commons</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Newsom in his speech seemed to ground Brown's previous enthusiasm, focusing in on the already in-progress Central Valley project.</p><p>Rebecca Saltzman, the vice president of the Bay Area Rapid Transit board of directors, told the Los Angeles Times that the big "unanswered question" is whether Newsom will pursue the Los Angeles-to-Bay Area sections.</p><p>Some experts agree with Newsom's decision, like USC engineering professor James Moore, who according to the Los Angeles Times is a critic of the project overall and thinks Newsom doesn't go far enough to end it.</p><p>While others disagree with Newsom, saying that momentum is required, and that without enthusiasm for the project it will be harder to fund in the future.
