AHMEDABAD: <keyword id="6371021" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Nano">Tata Nano</keyword>, once a symbol of aspiration for two-wheeler owners, will be revamped next year and launched as a 'Smart City Car', Girish Wagh, senior vice-president, <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword>, said on August 13.

"We are carrying out multiple interventions to improve the product as well as its image to ensure that the Nano lives up to its promise," Wagh said on the sidelines of launch of Zest, a compact sedan from the Tata stable with 29 new product features. 
 The adulation around the Nano brand disappeared when deliveries were hit owing to delay in the project. Cases of the car catching fire dampened the consumer sentiment around the brand. "Although fire incidents were either caused by foreign objects in the exhaust system or external manipulation with the car's electrical systems, over the period, we have rectified them," he said, adding that the company has refocused on the safety aspect in its subsequent model <keyword id="2012617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nano-Twist">Nano Twist</keyword>.

The company realized that there were significant number of cases where people would test-drive, book their Nano and then, drop out owing to negativity around the brand. "Social circles would dissuade them," Wagh said adding that the company is hoping to see a change in Nano's fortunes, post rebranding, including possible export to international markets. Tata Nano is manufactured at the company's Sanand facility on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

It fits comfortably on a finger tip.<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-80955-1?utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=commission_junction&amp;utm_campaign=3_nsn6445_deeplink_PID100292105&amp;utm_content=deeplinkent=deeplink">In a recent study</a> published in the journal Scientific Reports, researchers described finding a single male and female member of the new species, nicknamed "the nano-chameleon," in the mountains of northern Madagascar nine years ago.Take out the tail, and the nano-chameleon's body is even more minuscule - the male is less than half an inch (1.35 centimeters) in length - "making it the smallest known male of the roughly 11,500 known non-avian <keyword id="6712580" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="reptiles">reptiles</keyword>," Frank Glaw, herpetologist at the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology and a co-author of the new study, <a href="https://www.snsb.mwn.de/index.php/en/press-releases/991-nano-chamaeleon-engl">said in a press release</a>.But the male nano-chameleon, as known as Brookesia nana, isn't just unique because of its size - it's also well-endowed, according to the study authors.The reptile's genitals are almost 20% as long as its body is, they found.<h2>Exceptionally large genitals</h2><h2><div type="image" title="nano chameleon" height="1000" width="1506" msid="80698131" hostid="261"></div></h2>Male chameleons, like snakes and other lizards, have an internal sex organ called a hemipenis. A pair of hemipenes are exposed when it's time for chameleon hanky panky, and the nano-chameleon's hemipenes are exceptionally large, Glaw's team found.The researchers compared the nano-chameleon's genital size to the other 51 chameleon species living on Madagascar, and found that the animal has the fifth largest genitals on the island, relative to its body size. (They found one chameleon that had hemipenes about one-third of its body size.)Male nano-chameleons may need such large sex organs, the study authors said, because they're smaller than their female counterparts.The female nano-chameleon they found measured about 1.1 inches from tip to tail."Extremely miniaturized males" need larger genitals in order to "successfully mate with the larger females," Miguel Vences, another study co-author, <a href="https://www.snsb.mwn.de/index.php/en/press-releases/991-nano-chamaeleon-engl">said in a press release</a>.<h2>Tiny chameleons in danger</h2>Researchers have documented other tiny chameleons in Madagascar, including Brookesia micra, a similarly wee reptile that Glaw announced to the world <a href="https://www.livescience.com/18481-world-tiniest-chameleon-discovered.html">in 2012</a>. (The new nano-chameleon edges out Brookesia micra for the honor of smallest reptile by a few millimeters.)Yet despite their best efforts, Glaw's team was only able to find two nano-chameleons in the Sorata massif, a mountainous rainforest region at the north end of the island where they were searching for new species.<div type="image" title="Lowland_rainforest,_Masoala_National_Park,_Madagascar" height="3010" width="4013" msid="80698133" hostid="261"></div>Dwarf chameleon species like this one typically have commensurately tiny habitat ranges; sometimes an entire species fits into an area less than 10 acres in size.The team predicts every member of the nano-chameleon species fits into an area less than 40-square miles in size. Given that estimate, and the fact that the Sorata forests are declining in size, the study authors suggest the newly discovered reptile be designated as a critically endangered species."Unfortunately, the habitat of the nano-chameleon is under heavy pressure from deforestation, but the area has recently been designated as a protected area, and hopefully that will enable this tiny new chameleon to survive," Oliver Hawlitschek, a third study co-author, said <a href="https://www.snsb.mwn.de/index.php/en/press-releases/991-nano-chamaeleon-engl">in a press release</a>.

The <keyword id="6359191" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="election">election</keyword> frenzy is now over and the euphoria over the new government has also settled in. Looking from a marketing lens, it seems some veteran political brands got a makeover (it paid off well), some political brands fell big time and one of the newest kids on the block with a huge buzz around it, fell flat on the customers (read voters). 
 The recent election results force us to mull over what went wrong with one of the promising brands of the Indian political landscape, <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword>. Kejriwal’s performance in politics in the last one year has some resemblances with one of the biggest brand failures in the country, <keyword id="6371021" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Nano">Tata Nano</keyword>. 
 
Nano promised to change and revolutionise India’s automobile market in a big way. Kejriwal appeared as the man who can change the political landscape. Both Nano and Kejriwal changed their battlefields, but not quite the way they had expected. 
 
 
The initial performance of Arvind Kejriwal and Tata Nano: The similarities 
 
For the starters, let’s establish the lacklustre performance of both these brands - Nano and Kejriwal. Nano was launched with much fanfare in 2009 and received a record-breaking booking of 2.06 lakh units at Rs one lakh per unit. The rest of the people who booked the car had the option to cancel their bookings or buy it at a higher price. Oops, wasn’t it touted as Rs 1 lakh car for two years? So why should only a select few get the privilege? 
 
Cut to the political scene: Arvind Kejriwal gets a huge response in Delhi state elections in 2013 with 28 seats to his Aam Aadmi Party. He forms the government with outside support from the Congress but lasts only for 49 days and resigns. Didn’t he promise the Delhi voters so many changes in the state in return for their votes? But suddenly he changed his mind (much like the Nano management changed its mind about the price) and the voters felt cheated and they remembered this in the national elections (just like the people gave a cold response to Nano over the last six years). 
 
Today, both Nano and Kejriwal have had a dismal performance. Tata Nano has managed to sell 2.5 lakh units (Source: Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, SIAM, reports) in the last six years since its launch in 2009; not to forget that the company has the capacity to produce 2.5 lakh units per year and that’s what the initial target was. 
 
Arvind Kejriwal got just over two lakh votes in Varanasi and lost to Narendra Modi by more than 3.7 lakh votes. AAP’s performance, too, was nowhere respectful with victory in only four seats out of 432 seats that it contested. 
 
The big fallacy: ‘Jo dikhta hai wo bikta hai’ 
 
Besides the dismal performance, another common thread between Kejriwal and Nano has been the big built up and hype around them for months before their launch/polls, courtesy excellent public relations (PR), below-the-line activities and the media. Everyone was talking about Nano back in 2009 at the time of its launch. Similarly, everyone was talking about Kejriwal during the elections (in fact, even after the elections). 
 
This reiterates the biggest marketing rule: Consumers (or voters) can’t be won over only with great PR and media attention. ‘Jo dikhta hai wo bikta hai’? Well, not really for Kejriwal or Nano! 
 
Consumers/voters don’t forgive or forget broken promises 
 
Nano came into existence with its tag price of Rs one lakh. But that was offered only to a select few customers. Kejriwal sold people the dream of honest and outstanding governance in Delhi. He broke his promise in 49 days when he resigned. Voters viewed this as an opportunistic decision. 
 
Misread the market 
 
Nano’s marketing team touted the product as the common man’s car, rather the car for the less privileged. Their target audience were the small town families. Their marketing focused on creating big buzz in the mainstream and social media and other tactics, creating big buzz in the metros. Not much was done to reach the primary target audience. The brand misread the market. 
 
Kejriwal touted himself as the leader of the common man. He and his team created big buzz in Delhi and a few other big cities and thought they can win the elections based on that buzz. They believed if Delhi voted for them in the state elections, the entire nation will also vote for them in general elections. 
 
Marketing lesson: Creating buzz in the big towns will not win battles in the heartland of the country. 
 
Nano has not really been able to redeem itself and the sales of the brand have been on a downslide (30,000 units approx in FY 2010, 70,432 units in FY 2011, 74,527 units in FY 2012 and 21,109 units in FY 2014, Source: SIAM). The question is: Can Kejriwal redeem himself in the eyes of voters and do what Nano couldn’t?

How nano influencers on Instagram make money with under 10,000 followers

To revamp <keyword id="6371021" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Nano">Tata Nano</keyword>’s image, Tata Group auto wing <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> has tied-up with a leading car rental company <keyword id="2549968" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carzonerent">Carzonerent</keyword>. Both the companies would together launch a new initiative called Myles City Drive that will allow customers to drive a Tata Nano across Delhi-NCR. 
	 
	“The Nano Twist is the perfect smart city car for zipping through Delhi-NCR. We are delighted to associate with Carzonrent and through this partnership we will reach out to a larger customer base and give them an opportunity to experience the awesome Nano in a self-drive avatar. After seeing success in countries like US, Canada, UK, Spain and Australia, Carzonrent have brought the Myles city-drive, a self-drive concept to the NCR region. We are happy to partner with them and be a part of a first in this growing segment”, said Deepankar Tiwari, head- institutional sales, Tata Motors.

Ties Up With Carzonerent To Boost Nano Sales

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Tata Motors did not produce a single unit of its entry-level car Nano in 2019 although it sold just one unit in February even as the company is yet to officially retire Ratan Tata's "people's car". 
According to a regulatory filing by the company, Tata Motors had zero production and sales of the Nano in December 2019 while it produced 82 units and sold 88 units in December 2018.
Similarly, in November 2019 there was zero production and sales of the entry-level model, whereas in the year-ago period it produced 66 units and sold 77 units.
 In October 2019 also, according to the filing, it did not produce or sell any unit of the Nano while in the year-ago month it rolled out 71 units while selling 54 units.
 In the first nine months of 2019 also Tata Motors did not produce a single unit of Nano.
 The company did not sell a single unit in any month last year except February when it sold just one, according to several regulatory filings by the company.
 Tata Motors has so far been maintaining that no decision has been made yet on the future of the Nano saying production planning of a car is a "conscious management of demand, system inventory and planned efficiencies".
It has, however, admitted that in its current form the Nano will not meet the new safety regulations and BS-VI emission norms. 
Tata Motors had unveiled Nano in January 2008 at the Auto Expo with much expectations of being "the people's car", as dubbed by the then Tata group chief Ratan Tata. However, it could not live up to the billing with sales dwindling over the years.
 On the issue of discontinuing the Nano, the company has been insisting that "decisions on product life cycle is a holistic view taken after considering the market developments, regulations and emerging competitive landscape. Any such decisions are announced as and when it's taken".
 Company officials had, however, hinted that production and sales of the Nano would stop from April 2020 as Tata Motors has no plans to invest further on the model to meet strict emission norms under Bharat Stage-VI, which come into effect from April 1 this year and other safety regulations.
 The Nano was launched in the market in March 2009 with an initial price of close to Rs 1 lakh for the basic model despite cost escalations, with Tata insisting that "a promise is a promise".
 However, from the beginning, Nano courted trouble. It was originally planned to be rolled out from Tata Motors' proposed plant at Singur in West Bengal, where it faced intense political and farmer protests against land acquisition. The company had to shift its production to a new plant at Sanand in Gujarat.
 Instances of the car catching fire initially after it was launched didn't help its cause either. Tata had admitted that the company made the mistake of promoting the Nano as 'the cheapest car'.
 It became a loss-making model for Tata Motors with ex-Tata Sons chairman Mistry, who was abruptly removed from the post, even claiming that the Nano "consistently lost value, peaking at Rs 1,000 crore".
 Mistry also termed the Nano one of the "legacy hotspots" and there was "no line of sight to profitability for the Nano, (or) any turnaround strategy".

It was going to be a gamechanger. And now, ten years later, there are barely any Nanos to be seen on Indian roads. The cheap car has proven to be a very costly failure for its manufacturer, sounding the death knell for Tata’s domestic passenger vehicle business. In June 2018, only one unit was produced by Tata Motors, while only three were sold. No units were exported. How could things go so wrong? The first problem was cost escalations and production delays. The Nano ended up being manufactured at a higher cost than expected, owing to the higher input costs and the need for additional features, but Tata Motors had no choice to sell it at the price that they promised. That was, after all, the USP of the car - that it was only ₹100,000. The car’s large-scale rollout also ended up being pushed back by a year to March 2009 due to production delays, which tempered enthusiasm. Production had to be shifted from the company’s Singur plant in West Bengal to Uttarakhand and Gujarat due to farmer protests over land acquisition. The car was relaunched as the ₹199,000 “GenX Nano” in 2015, equipped with automatic transmission and Bluetooth connectivity, but the damage was already done by then. The third problem was the lack of a coherent distribution strategy. The Nano would have been a strong-seller in small towns and rural markets, but Tata Motors lacked a solid dealership network in these far flung areas. As sales declined considerably a year after the car’s launch, reaching a low of 550 units in December 2010, Tata Motors even took to selling the car in hypermarket outlets like Big Bazaar and exporting it to neighbouring countries like Nepal and Sri Lanka. The strategy never paid off. The end of the road As things stand, the Nano could go out of production very soon, as its parent looks to axe ageing models. Tata Motors has maintained that it is yet to take a decision on the matter, but the continued investment, especially to comply with future emissions norms, simply does not justify the returns. A statement from Tata Motors clarified this by explaining that “the Nano in its present form cannot continue beyond 2019”. It has been suggested that the car is still in production only due to Ratan Tata’s emotional connection to it, which is hardly a reason to keep going. Even though the Nano brand could be facing the axe, there has been speculation that it will get a further lease of life through Tata Motors’ deal with Jayem Automotives. Under a proposed partnership, Jayem is set to use the body of the Nano to make a special electric vehicle, which will be branded the Jayem Neo EV. However, a spokesperson for Tata Motors said that this was merely speculation. It looks to be a sad end for the “people’s car”, a product that promised so much. However, its phasing out should give way to smarter product choices from the company as it looks to regain market share at home.
