<keyword id="20285787" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nagaon" source="keywords">Nagaon</keyword> (Assam) [India], June 20 (ANI): Floods in Assam have severely affected nearly 6,000 people in Nagaon district, submerged 35 villages in the district under Kampur and Raha revenue circles and also submerged 1,089 hectares of crop area. Many people of the Changchaki area under the Kampur revenue circle have been forced to leave their homes after the flood waters entered their homes. The Changchaki-Kawaimari connecting road has submerged and several portions of the embankment have washed away. According to the Central Water Commission, the water level of the Kopili River is flowing above the danger level mark. Dipak Bora, a resident of Changchaki village told that people have faced massive problems due to flood. "This is the second flood this year. We don't know what we will do. The flood waters washed away portions of the embankment a few places. We are facing massive problems. The flood waters entered into the houses of many villagers. The flood waters have also submerged our croplands; destroyed paddy crops and vegetables. Many people are now facing a food crisis. There is also a drinking water problem," Dipak Bora said. Sushila Bora, a flood victim said that her family members are now taking shelter in other people's houses after the flood water entered her home. "All household goods are now under water. There is about five feet of deep water inside our home. Two floods come within 17 days. We are facing lots of problems and staying in other people's houses," Sushila Bora said. On the other hand, Moni Medhi said that the flood waters entered her house and she is very much worried about the current situation. "This flood has destroyed our household goods, crops etc. We are facing massive problems with food, and drinking water. The government has tried to solve the problem, but we don't see any progress. We are poor people, and our main income source is farming, but the flood waters destroyed all. We don't know about our future, how we will live," Moni Medhi said. Many villagers of Changchaki, Kampur area are facing similar problems. According to the flood report of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 3 lakh people in 19 districts were affected by the deluge. More than 2.43 lakh people have been affected alone in Karimganj district. 979 villages under 48 revenue circles in 19 districts in the state have been affected by the current wave of floods. The flood waters have submerged 3326.31 hectares of crop area in the flood-hit districts.

Assam floods: 3 lakh people affected by deluge; 35 villages and 1,089 hectares of crop area submerged

The flood situation in Assam continued to improve on Sunday as water level is receding fast across the state, officials said. The India Meteorological Department's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in <keyword id="19941239" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guwahati" source="keywords">Guwahati</keyword> has also not issued any warning except predicting some rains in Barak valley and a few districts of central Assam. Meanwhile, a report by the Assam State <keyword id="20020610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="disaster-management" source="keywords">Disaster Management</keyword> Authority (<keyword id="21816603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ASDMA" source="keywords">ASDMA</keyword>) on Saturday night said that one person died at Gogamukh revenue circle of Dhemaji district. With this, the total number of people losing their lives in this year's flood, landslide, storm and lightning has increased to 107. The report said more than 8,40,000 people are hit due to the floods in Barpeta, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar and South Salmara districts. Cachar is the worst hit with nearly 1.5 lakh people suffering, followed by Dhubri with almost 1.27 lakh people and Nagaon with more than 88,500 people reeling under <keyword id="22312557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flood-waters" source="keywords">flood waters</keyword>, it added. The administration has been operating 221 <keyword id="20764825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="relief-camps" source="keywords">relief camps</keyword> and relief distribution centres across 13 districts, taking care of 72,046 displaced people at present. The authority has distributed 616.49 quintals of rice, 111.65 quintals of dal, 32.16 quintals of salt and 2,956.25 litres of mustard oil among the flood victims of the state during the last 24 hours. At present, 1,705 villages are under water and 39,898.92 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across Assam, the ASDMA said. Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by flood waters in Barpeta, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Morigaon, Nagaon and Sivasagar. At present, the mighty Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri. Its tributaries Burhidihing at Chenimari and Disang at Nanglamuraghat are flowing above the danger levels. The Barak river's tributary Kushiyara is also flowing above the danger marks at Karimganj town, ASDMA said. On account of widespread flooding, over 5,03,400 <keyword id="22405280" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-animals" source="keywords">domestic animals</keyword> and poultry are affected across the state.

Assam flood situation continues to improve; water receding fast

The flood situation in <keyword id="6354915" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assam" source="Orion">Assam</keyword> improved on Tuesday as the water level of major rivers receded with declining rainfall and the number of people reeling under the deluge decreased to 1.7 lakh, according to a bulletin. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (<keyword id="21816603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ASDMA" source="keywords">ASDMA</keyword>) said 1,70,377 people are currently affected by the flood in Bajali, Barpeta, Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Kamrup, Karimganj, Nagaon and Hojai districts. Over two lakh people were reeling under the deluge in the nine districts of the state on Sunday. The toll in this year's flood, landslide and storm has risen to 40 with the death of one person in Cachar due to drowning in floodwater on Monday. The worst affected district is Karimganj with 96,440 people under floodwater, followed by Cachar with over 52,400 and Darrang with nearly 10,802, the bulletin said. The Kushiara river in Karimganj was flowing above the danger mark, while the other major rivers and their tributaries were showing a receding trend, following the decline in rainfall during the last two days, it said. Altogether 13,094 people are currently taking shelter in 149 relief camps in the affected districts, the bulletin said. At least 641 villages are reeling under floodwater and 2,273.44 hectares of crop area have been damaged across the state due to the current spate of flood. Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by floodwater in most of the affected districts.

Sarma chaired a meeting on the flood situation with all District Commissioners late on Wednesday night and directed them to be liberal in granting <keyword id="19934094" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="relief" source="keywords">relief</keyword> as per norms, complete all rehabilitation claims as per norms before August 15 and provide accurate information to the headquarters so that adequate relief can be ensured. Cabinet ministers will also be camping in the flood-affected districts for the next three days from Thursday. The death toll in this year's flood, landslide and storm has increased to 56 and three others are reported missing. The severely affected flood districts are Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur and Tinsukia districts. Dhubri is the worst hit with over 2.23 lakh people suffering, followed by Darrang with nearly 1.84 lakh people and Lakhimpur with more than 1.66 lakh people reeling under flood waters. Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger marks at Nimatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri. Its tributaries Subansiri at Badatighat, Burhi Dihing at Chenimari, Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, and Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul are flowing above the danger levels. The Barak river is flowing above the danger mark at AP Ghat, BP Ghat, Chota Bakra and Fuletrak, while its tributaries Dhaleswari at Gharmura, Katakhal at Matizuri and Kushiyara at Karimganj town and are also flowing above the danger marks.

Assam flood situation deteriorates, 16.50 lakh people affected in 29 districts

The situation in the hill section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in Dima Hasao district remained critical on Tuesday as rain continued to batter the mountainous region, affecting the Lumding-Badarpur single line railway route. NFR officials said that uninterrupted rains coupled with the difficult terrain severely affected the restoration and repair work, which might take several weeks. The Lumding-Badarpur section in Assam is the only route to connect Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the southern part of Assam with the rest of the country. This rail link has been cut off for the past four days.

Assam’s flood situation turned critical after 10 more floodrelated deaths were reported on Monday, increasing the toll to 81. Guwahati, <keyword id="6369083" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="flood">Flood</keyword> in different parts of Assam inundated large swathes of land in <keyword id="49706" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kaziranga-National-Park">Kaziranga National Park</keyword>, a World Heritage site, killing at least 51 wild animals though 102 animals have been rescued, officials said on Tuesday. They said many tigers and rhinos had strayed into the nearby villages due to flooding of their habitats. Officials of the Kaziranga National Park and the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (<keyword id="2545081" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ASDMA">ASDMA</keyword>) said 95 per cent of the national park's 430 sq km area was now flooded, with traffic movement on the National Highway-37 near Kaziranga now suspended. According to the officials, 45 hog deer, three wild boars and one rhino, one wild buffalo and a swamp deer perished in the floodwater. Of the rescued animals, 86 were hog deer. Park Director P. Sivakumar said that rising water level in the park areas had forced three sub-adult tigers to stray into a goat-shed in Kandolimari village and nearby areas. "Two of the tigers have already been driven back into the park area and efforts are on to locate the third tiger," Sivakumar told <keyword id="105681" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IANS">IANS</keyword> over phone. Formed in 1908, the Kaziranga National park, a <keyword id="638143" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UNESCO-world-heritage">UNESCO World Heritage</keyword> site since 1985, is home to more than 2,200 one-horned Indian rhinoceros, approximately two third of the total world population. Each year, the monsoon floods inundate the National Park, located on the edge of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspots of Golaghat and Nagaon district, forcing a large number of the wild animals to leave the park and head towards the nearby hills in Karbi Anglong district by crossing National Highway-37 that passes near the park's boundary. According to the officials, 45 animals, mostly hog deer, were injured due to flood and one by vehicle hit. Of the 223 camps of forest personnel guarding the park, 173 have been inundated and 14 others vacated due to rising water levels. Heavy monsoon rains over the past few weeks have led to massive flooding of the north-eastern state, inundating 2,763 villages and affecting around 24 lakh people and 103,806 hectares of crop area in 27 of its 33 districts. "All connecting roads to the OIL's oil well site have been submerged with flood water. Bridges were damaged. At many places water is flowing over the road with knee to waist deep water. OIL's operational areas are heavily inundated," an OIL release said. A massive fire broke out on June 9 at OIL's Baghjan oil well near the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park that had been spewing natural gas and oil condensates uncontrollably since May 27. An important bridge en route to Baghjan, around 550 km east of Guwahati, was damaged due to the floods and the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked the official to build a bailey bridge for unimpeded movement of emergency services. The official said that in the current wave of floods, three persons died in Goalpara and Dibrugarh districts while in the first wave of floods from May 22 claimed 15 lives in different districts of Assam. Of the 26 affected districts, 15 -- Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Morigaon, South Sakmara, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Nalbari, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup (Rural), Nagaon, Golaghat, Majuli, Bongaigaon -- are the worst-hit. Besides erosion of river banks at a large number of places, roads, embankments, bridges, culverts and other infrastructure were damaged at many locations in 24 districts, the officials said, adding that hundred of houses were fully or partially damaged due to the floods. Around 14 lakh domesticated animals and over 8 lakh poultry birds were affected. Assam flood situation worsens again, death toll rises to 89

Guwahati, Jul 9 () Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday emphasised the need for continuing economic activities parallel to the fight against COVID-19 in the state. The chief minister directed the district administrations to ensure that there was no interruption in the implementation of developmental schemes while waging a relentless war against the virus, an official release said. Sonowal, in a video conference with the Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and Joint Directors of Health Services of all districts, reviewed the COVID-19 scenario, along with the status of flood and erosion, and the implementation of various developmental schemes. The chief minister directed the Deputy Commissioners to take steps for skill mapping of those who have returned from outside the state so that they could be provided adequate employment opportunities. Some of the returnees could be engaged in the implementation of schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission while others could be given self employment opportunities through Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonowal said. He asked the authorities to consult the respective public representatives of their districts before taking measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Sonowal also directed the Joint Directors of Health Services of all districts to ensure that a patient suffering from other ailments, besides COVID-19, gets the required medical facilities on time. The chief minister instructed the SPs to prevent mass gatherings in their districts which might increase the risk of rapid transmission of coronavirus. The people and the government must work together to defeat this pandemic as it has entered a very critical phase now, the chief minister said. He also instructed the DCs to plant trees to increase forest cover in the state and take steps for making heritage sites encroachment free. The chief minister appreciated the district administrations of Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath and Karbi Anglong for successfully curbing the menace of rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park. Guwahati, Jun 10 () Forty-two fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in Assam on Wednesday, taking the state's tally to 3,092, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Nineteen of these cases were reported in Nagaon, 16 in Kokrajhar, four in Lakhimpur, two in Jorhat and one in Dhemaji, he said. Assam breached the 3,000-mark late on Tuesday night after 215 people tested positive for COVID-19. Also, a record 313 people recovered from the disease on Tuesday. Out of the total 3,092 cases, 1,987 are active and 1,097 people have recovered. While five patients have died, three migrated out of the state. Assam has witnessed a surge in COVID-19 cases after interstate travel resumed on May 4. The state's tally has grown by more than 3,000 since then. There were only 42 COVID-19 cases in the state on May 4. The number crossed the 100-mark on May 17 and the 500-mark on May 25. The number of cases crossed the 1,000-mark on May 29 and the 2,000-mark on June 4. The state added more than 1,000 cases in the next five days to cross the 3,000-mark on June 9. During June, the Assam government is aiming for reduced institutional quarantine, increased home isolation and more testing of samples, an official said. Meanwhile, the state health department has decided to conduct the second round of the Assam Community Surveillance Programme (ACSP) covering all villages and wards in the state. In view of the COVID-19 outbreak and to check its spread in the community, the health workers will visit people's homes to identify flu-like cases and respiratory infections like Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) and influenza-like illness (ILI), an official release said. The health workers will also check for other vector-borne diseases like Japanese Encephalitis, malaria and dengue as floods have hit the state, it said. The first round of the community surveillance programme was held in May under which 29,771 villages were covered.
