Market watchdog SEBI has come out with a consultation paper in a bid to ease the functioning of <keyword id="22476006" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ESG-Rating-Providers" source="keywords">ESG Rating Providers</keyword> (ERPs), pushing for the development of a <keyword id="23760035" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="subscriber-pays-model" source="keywords">subscriber-pays model</keyword>. As of July 2024, nine ERPs are registered with SEBI to operate in the country. These include <keyword id="23760037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRISIL-ESG-Ratings" source="keywords">CRISIL ESG Ratings</keyword> &amp; Analytics, ESG Risk Assessments and Ratings, GlobeTrend Climate Impact Institutional Investor Advisory Services, <keyword id="23760038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-Sustainability-Ratings" source="keywords">NSE Sustainability Ratings</keyword> and Analytics, PGS Impact, Pragati Development Consulting, CARE ESG Ratings, and SES ESG Research. Per the paper's proposal, ERPs won't be required to disclose ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings to the bourses, provided they confirm that there is no non-public information that could potentially affect the rating. Another proposal was the simultaneous sharing of the ESG rating reports both to the rated companies and to the subscribers who pay to access these reports. ERPs should ensure that rated entities, their group companies, or associates cannot subscribe to their own ESG ratings, SEBI said in its consultation paper. Some of the other suggestions put forth by SEBI include: 1. Companies will have a specific timeframe to respond to the ESG report, and any such comments should be included in the report as an addendum. 2. In case the ERP does not agree with the remarks issued by the rated company, they can add their comments to the report as well. 3. ERPs can rate unlisted issuers or other products, provided they meet specific guidelines from relevant regulators. SEBI is receiving public comment on these proposals until November 15, 2024. <h2>Steady returns </h2>Of the 11 ESG mutual fund schemes available to Indian mutual fund investors, the Quant ESG Equity fund has generated the highest returns of about 45.44% over one year, data from ValueResearch showed. Simply put, had you invested Rs 10,000 every month in this fund for three years, you would have accumulated a corpus of Rs 5,47,525. Over three years, the returns on this fund come to around 26%. This was followed by the ICICI Pru ESG Exclusionary Strategy fund, which yielded 44.73% returns over the same period. However, over ultra-short terms, i.e., 1-3 months, ESG funds have largely delivered negative returns, underscoring their suitability only as a long-term investment avenue. Only the SBI ESG Exclusionary Strategy Direct Fund and Quantum ESG Best In Class Strategy Direct Fund have been around for 5 years, during which they have generated returns of about 16.67% and 18.7%, respectively. <keyword id="23760036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ESG-mutual-funds" source="keywords">ESG mutual funds</keyword> typically select and invest in companies that are ESG-compliant, i.e., who weave in environmental conversation, social welfare, and robust <keyword id="20392393" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="corporate-governance" source="keywords">corporate governance</keyword> practices into their working philosophy and work ethos, while simultaneously generating decent financial returns for stakeholders as well.

New Delhi, The rupee appreciated 2 paise to 83.35 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, amid a bullish trend in domestic equities and sustained foreign fund inflows. Forex traders said investors remained on the sidelines ahead of the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>'s monetary policy decision later this week. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened 2 paise higher at 83.35 against the dollar as domestic benchmark indices touched new lifetime peaks. On Tuesday, the rupee settled at 83.37 against the dollar. "The RBI's policy, commencing on Tuesday with a decision due on Friday, will be closely monitored," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. The Reserve Bank is likely to maintain the status quo on the short-term interest rate in its monetary policy review. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das-headed <keyword id="6375120" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="monetary-policy-committee" source="Orion">Monetary Policy Committee</keyword> (MPC) is scheduled to begin its three-day deliberations on December 6. Das would unveil the decision of the six-member MPC on December 8. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.11 per cent lower at 103.93. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.12 per cent to USD 77.29 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 269.23 points or 0.39 per cent higher at 69,565.25 points. The broader <keyword id="372424" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nse-nifty" source="Orion">NSE Nifty</keyword> jumped 79.50 points or 0.38 per cent to 20,934.60 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Tuesday as they purchased shares worth Rs 5,223.51 crore, according to exchange data.

Rupee rises 2 paise to 83.35 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai, The rupee depreciated 12 paise to 82.66 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, weighed down by sustained foreign fund outflows and a muted trend in domestic equities. Firm crude oil prices and a strong American currency further dented investor sentiments, forex traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened weak at 82.59 against the dollar, then fell to 82.66, registering a decline of 12 paise over its last close. In the previous session on Wednesday, the rupee appreciated 16 paise to close at 82.54 against the US dollar after the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) hiked the repo rate by 25 basis points. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.05 per cent to 103.36. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.01 per cent to USD 85.08 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share <keyword id="53232" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bse-sensex" source="Orion">BSE Sensex</keyword> was trading 177.7 points or 0.29 per cent lower at 60,486.09. Rupee falls 12 paise to 82.66 against US dollar in early trade

The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> depreciated 18 paise to close at 81.85 (provisional) against the <keyword id="6368584" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="us-dollar" source="Orion">US dollar</keyword> on Wednesday on dollar demand from importers and recovery in crude oil prices. Forex traders said sustained foreign fund outflows and concerns over rising COVID-19 cases in China also weighed on investor sentiments. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 81.81 and later witnessed an intraday high of 81.74 and a low of 81.87 during the session. The domestic unit finally settled at 81.85 against the American currency, registering a fall of 18 paise over its last close of 81.67. "Indian Rupee depreciated on Dollar demand from importers and recovery in crude oil prices. FII outflows also weighed on Rupee," said Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. However, the soft US Dollar and positive domestic markets cushioned the downside. The US Dollar declined on Tuesday on hopes that the <keyword id="45672" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fed" source="Orion">Fed</keyword> may cool down its pace of rate hikes. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.21 per cent to 106.99. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures advanced 0.91 per cent to USD 89.16 per barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in capital markets as they offloaded shares worth Rs 697.83 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data. "We expect the Rupee to trade with a negative bias on concerns over rising COVID-19 cases in China and hawkish Fed speak. Though some Fed officials hint that they are open to a slower pace of rate hike, the US central bank will not pause its rate hike," Choudhary said. Traders may take cues from manufacturing and services <keyword id="104215" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pmi" source="Orion">PMI</keyword>, durable goods orders and new home sales data. They will remain cautious ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes later today, Choudhary added. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 91.62 points or 0.15 per cent to end at 61,510.58, while the broader <keyword id="372424" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nse-nifty" source="Orion">NSE Nifty</keyword> advanced 23.05 points or 0.13 per cent to 18,267.25. Rupee falls 18 paise to close at 81.85 against US dollar

Mumbai, Equity benchmark Sensex jumped over 200 points to scale a fresh intra-day peak in early trade on Wednesday, led by gains in <keyword id="6653" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword>, <keyword id="6354287" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharti-airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> and <keyword id="6355199" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> amid sustained foreign fund inflow. After touching a life-time high of 49,776.29 in early session, the 30-share BSE index was trading 201.65 points or 0.41% higher at 49,718.76. Similarly, the broader <keyword id="372424" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-Nifty">NSE Nifty</keyword> rose 70.55 points or 0.48% to 14,634 in opening deals. Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> was the top gainer in the <keyword id="9940028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex-pack">Sensex pack</keyword>, rallying around 4%, followed by ONGC, SBI, ICICI Bank, M&amp;M, NTPC, L&amp;T and <keyword id="6355975" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="axis-bank">Axis Bank</keyword>. According to Binod Modi, Head-Strategy at Reliance Securities, domestic equities continue to look firm and resilient. Contraction in IIP data indicates more measures by the Finance Minister in the Budget to stimulate economic activities. Similarly, better than anticipated softening in CPI data for December 2020 negates the looming concerns over low interest rate scenarios, he stated. "We still believe that a sharp rebound in high frequency key economic data for December 2020 indicates demand revival, which bodes well for the markets. Further, 3QFY21 corporate earnings are progressing well and are expected to sustain growth, which along with weak dollar and soft monetary policy of global bankers should continue to attract FPIs into domestic equities," he added. US equities ended slightly higher as investors remained hopeful about a large fiscal stimulus to be announced from the Biden administration. Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai and Hong Kong were trading with losses in mid-session deals, while Seoul and Tokyo were in the positive territory. Meanwhile, the global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 1.41% higher at USD 57.38 per barrel. Sensex 200 points away from 50,000, Nifty scales 14,600

New Delhi, Jan 23 () Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending by companies listed on NSE increased 18 per cent to Rs 11,961 crore in 2018-19, as per a report. 
 During 2017-18, the firms listed on NSE had spent Rs 10,179 crore.
 "CSR expenditure by companies listed at NSE has grown at a healthy compounded annual growth rate of 17 per cent over the last 5 years," a report by nseinfobase.com, a joint venture between NSE and PRIME Database, said.
 Reliance Industries, ONGC, Indian Oil Corporation, HDFC Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Tata Steel, ITC, NTPC and Power Grid Corporation of India are the top 10 companies which spent the most on CSR during financial year 2018-19, the report said.
 "The top 10 companies together spent 36 per cent of the total spend on CSR," the report said.
 Besides, there were 488 companies which exceeded their prescribed spending and 37 companies spent on CSR despite reporting a loss.
 "PSU spending saw an increase of 4 per cent from previous year. 57 PSUs spent Rs 3,198 crore in 2018-19, up from Rs 2,710 crore spent by 54 PSUs in 2017-18," the report stated.
 As on March 31, 2019, 1,786 companies were listed on NSE. However, the analysis is based on 1,132 companies listed on NSE as on March 31, 2019 and obligated to spend on CSR and for which CSR details were available in their annual reports.
 Of the total funds spent on CSR, maximum spending was on education and vocation skills at over Rs 4,440 crore.
 Among other areas, hunger, poverty and healthcare witnessed a spending of Rs 3,242 crore, rural development Rs 1,322 crore and environmental sustainability nearly Rs 1,020 crore, the report found. 
 Areas such as armed force veterans, technology incubators, slum development and disaster management saw negligible spends. 
 Giving a state-wise overview, the report said that top 10 states which received maximum CSR funds were Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Telangana.
 The top 10 states accounted for 47 per cent of the total CSR expenditure.
 According to Pranav Haldea, managing director of PRIME Database Group, "not all areas of the country are benefitting equally. Since the Act decrees that companies shall give preference to the local area, the more industrialised parts of the country are cornering a larger share."
 Under the Companies Act, 2013, certain class of profitable entities are required to shell out at least 2 per cent of their three-year annual average net profit towards CSR activities. SRS
