In NSCLC, the cancer cells are larger, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/6203-non-small-cell-lung-cancer">Cleveland Clinic</a>.<br /><br />Symptoms can include a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-cough-was-stage-4-lung-cancer-2022-8">persistent cough</a>, coughing up blood, chest pain, wheezing, fatigue, appetite loss, and face swelling.<br /><br />Because some non-small cell lung cancer symptoms can resemble other illnesses like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.clinicbyclevelandclinic.com/blog/how-often-is-lung-cancer-misdiagnosed/">bronchitis</a>, about 80% of cases are diagnosed at later stages, making it harder to treat once the cancer has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-shoulder-pain-lung-cancer-spread-symptoms-2022-9">spread to other parts of the body</a>, according to Yale Medicine.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Smoking is the biggest risk factor, even if you quit</strong></h2>According to Cleveland Clinic, the biggest risk factor for NSCLC is smoking. Other risks include exposure to asbestos, metal and mineral dust, air pollution, radon, and radiation therapy. <ul class="summary-list"><li><strong><keyword id="11094896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="novocure">NovoCure</keyword> Limited spiked as much as 65% on Tuesday to its highest since it listed in 2015.</strong></li><li><strong> The surge came amid the company's update on its phase three trial for the treatment of non-small cell <keyword id="33225" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="lung-cancer">lung cancer</keyword>.</strong></li><li><strong>An independent committee gave it the green light to recruit more patients for its trial.</strong></li></ul><p>NovoCure Limited spiked as much as 65% on Tuesday to its highest since it listed in 2015 after the global oncology company gave an <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210413005428/en/Novocure-Announces-Update-on-Phase-3-Pivotal-LUNAR-Trial-of-Tumor-Treating-Fields-in-Non-Small-Cell-Lung-Cancer">update on its phase three trial</a> for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).</p><p>The Jersey-based company on Tuesday announced that an independent data monitoring committee gave it the green light to recruit more patients for its phase three Lunar trial of tumor treating fields in stage four NSCLC.</p><p>The committee also accelerated its late-stage study in non-small cell lung cancer.</p><p>Novocure initially needed 534 patients with 18 months of follow-up for its study. The board now recommended a reduced sample size of 276 patients with 12 months follow-up, which it said will be sufficient. No other changes to the design of the trial were recommended.</p><p>The goal of the trial is to help patients survive when treated with TTFields and immune checkpoint inhibitors or docetaxel versus immune checkpoint inhibitors or docetaxel alone.</p><p>NovoCure has notified the US Food and Drug Administration.</p><p>"The completion of the Lunar interim analysis is an important milestone for Novocure," said Asaf Danziger, NovoCure's CEO. "Pending regulatory approval, the recommended protocol adjustments could accelerate trial completion by more than a year. We look forward to sharing final data from the Lunar trial as quickly as possible."</p><p>Worldwide, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death, with NSCLC accounting for 85% of all lung cancers, the company said. Approximately 193,000 patients are diagnosed with NSCLC in the US each year.</p><p>NovoCure has operations in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Malvern, Pennsylvania, and New York City. It also has global offices in Germany, Switzerland, Japan, and Israel. </p>

NovoCure surges 65% to all-time high on upbeat review of its lung cancer treatment trial

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/58822991f10a9ac1348b8e1a-867/screen shot 2017-01-20 at 101457 am.png" alt="Screen Shot 2017 01 20 at 10.14.57 AM" data-mce-source="Markets Insider" /><p class="source"><span>Markets Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><span></span></p><p>The competition over a new class of cancer drugs is heating up.</p><p><span>On Thursday, drugmaker Bristol</span>-Myers Squibb said that it wouldn't go for an accelerated US <span>approval </span>for a combination of its two immunotherapy drugs as an initial treatment for<span> lung </span><span>cancer - helping its rival, Merck pull ahead</span>.</p><p>Shares of<span> BMS were down 9% Friday morning on the news, while Merck was up 3.6%. </span></p><p>BMS cited "a review of data available at this time" for the decision to hold off on filing for Food and Drug Administration<span> approval </span>of the combination of its<span> cancer </span>drugs Opdivo and Yervoy.</p><p>Jefferies analyst Jeffrey Holford said in a research note that he still expects the<span> BMS </span>immunotherapy combination to be approved in the second half of 2018 and sees "no real change to valuation or estimates as a result of this update."</p><p>But the move helps secure Merck's current lead in the development of combination<span> lung </span><span>cancer </span>treatments. </p><p>Merck last week said U.S. regulators had agreed to an accelerated review of its application to combine immune system-boosting drug Keytruda with chemotherapy as an initial therapy for advanced<span> lung </span><span>cancer</span>.</p><p>Merck said the FDA would decide by May 10 whether to approve its combination treatment.</p><h2>Why the combination cancer treatment is key</h2><p>Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer, after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/deadliest-worst-cancers-2016-1">breast cancer, and it's one of the deadliest</a>.</p><p>Keytruda and Opdivo, which both block a protein called PD-1 to boost the ability of the body's own immune system to kill<span> cancer </span>cells, are already approved to treat a range of<span> cancer</span>s, but their biggest market would be first-line<span> lung </span><span>cancer</span>. Yervoy targets a different protein called CTLA-4.</p><p>Immunotherapy is revolutionizing some areas of<span> cancer </span>care but giving it on its own only seems to work better than chemotherapy in previously untreated<span> lung </span><span>cancer </span>patients who have high levels of a protein called PD-L1. Merck's Keytruda is already approved for such patients.</p><p>But not <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-cancer-immunotherapy-works-2016-12">everybody responds to the PD-1 drugs</a>. Just a quarter to a third of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients have tumors with at least 50 percent of cells producing PD-L1. Bristol-Myers Squibb won't be going after a fast approval for its lung cancer drug

<p>Well, almost.</p>
<p>For now, it's still in Cuba, where it's already <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/02/19/cuba.cancer.vaccine/index.html?iref=24hours">being given out for free as part of a course of </a><a href="http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/02/19/cuba.cancer.vaccine/index.html?iref=24hours">routine treatment for people with advanced lung cancer</a>. But it's on track to show up on American shores soon, possibly within a year, <a href="http://www.wired.com/2015/05/cimavax-roswell-park-cancer-institute/">according to Wired</a>.</p>
<p>The vaccine, called CimaVax, is the result of a collaboration between US and Cuban research centers. The software for the effort is being provided by Manhattan-based tech company Infor.</p>
<p>Last month, the New York-based Roswell Park Cancer Institute announced it would work with Havana's Center for Molecular Immunology to bring the vaccine to the US during a meeting between New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Cuban First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel, and several Cuban trade officials, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2015-04-20/cuomo-says-cuba-visit-will-pressure-congress-to-lift-embargo">Bloomberg reports</a>. That meeting made Cuomo the first US governor to visit Cuba since President Obama eased travel restrictions to the country.</p>
<p>CimaVax helps treat lung cancer's symptoms - which can include chest pain, hoarseness, and intense fatigue - and could help prevent the disease from recurring, or coming back, in people who have gone a period of time with no symptoms, Roswell Park Cancer Institute Director Candace Johnson&#xa0;<a href="http://wivb.com/2015/04/21/roswell-park-cancer-center-pens-deal-with-cuban-center/" target="_blank">told WIVB News 4</a>.</p>
<p>Johnson hopes to get approval for testing CimaVax in the US within 6-8 months and to start clinical trials of the drug within a year, <a href="http://www.wired.com/2015/05/cimavax-roswell-park-cancer-institute/">she told Wired</a>.</p>
<h2>Why Cuba?</h2>
<p>Cuba leads the world with its high concentration of health workers. <a href="http://www.who.int/whosis/whostat2007/en/">They have around 600 doctors and nurses for every 100,000 citizens</a>; the US has about 250 doctors and nurses for every 100,000 citizens.</p>
<p>And Cuba puts them to work. The country has a floating squadron of <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2014/oct/22/cuban-doctors-west-africa-fight-ebola">50,000</a> doctors and nurses on the ground in developing countries led by the government. In the US, that program's closest parallel is Doctors Without Borders, but that program is run by a nonprofit organization.</p>
<p>Plus, despite <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/life-expectancy-vs-healthcare-spending-2014-3">spending far less on healthcare per person than the US does</a>, Cuba has <a href="http://ucatlas.ucsc.edu/spend.php">nearly the same average life expectancy</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.paho.org/saludenlasamericas/index.php?option=com_docman&amp;task=doc_view&amp;gid=125&amp;Itemid=">Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in 12 of Cuba's 15 provinces</a>. In 2011, nearly three decades after researchers at the Center for Molecular Immunology began working on the drug, the Cuban government began making it available to its citizens at no cost, <a href="http://www.wired.com/2015/05/cimavax-roswell-park-cancer-institute/">Wired reports</a>.</p>
<p>A <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20387330">2010 review</a> of phase two trials of CimaVax conducted in Cuba between 1995 and 2005 found that patients with lung cancer who got Cimavax lived an average of 4-6 months longer than those who got traditional treatments. These trials occurred in patients with <a href="http://www.cancer.org/cancer/lungcancer-non-smallcell/detailedguide/non-small-cell-lung-cancer-what-is-non-small-cell-lung-cancer">non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC),&#xa0;which comprises roughly 85% to 90% of all lung cancers</a>. NSCLC&#xa0;includes three different sub-types of lung cancer and can occur in people who smoke and people who don't.</p>

<p>When advanced, NSCLC is currently considered incurable.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa011954">Less than 30%</a> of people with a form of NSCLC that has spread throughout the body respond to the most commonly used initial treatment in this stage of the disease, platinum-based chemotherapy. Even when other forms of treatment are added, <a href="http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa061884">the median life expectancy for patients with this type of NSCLC is one a year</a> after diagnosis. Just <a href="http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/non-small-cell-lung/Patient/page1">3.5% of patients survive 5 years</a>.</p>
<h2>Promising, but not a panacea</h2>
<p>Though promising, it's unlikely that the drug is going to cure or eliminate lung cancer anytime soon, since <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/health/2011-09/07/c_131111574.htm">it's designed to work by attacking a certain type of protein that cancer tumors produce rather than the cancer tumors themselves</a>.</p>
<p>As such, the drug helps take advantage of someone's existing immune response, coaxing the body into releasing a flood of antibodies to curb tumor growth. In some people, this treatment could have the capacity to transform lung cancer from an immediate death sentence into a long term, semi-manageable disease.</p>
<p>"With this kind of product, maybe cancer, advanced cancer, can be treated like any other chronic disease like diabetes," Center for Molecular Immunology scientist <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/02/19/cuba.cancer.vaccine/index.html?iref=24hours">Gisela Gonzales told Xinhua News back in 2011.</a></p>
