In a major relief for some third-party digital payments players, the <keyword id="6383340" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-payments-corporation-of-india" source="Orion">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) on Friday said it is extending the Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword>) volume cap rules deadline till December 31, 2024. The NPCI initially planned to enforce the UPI market cap rules in January 2021, but delayed it several times. "In view of significant potential of digital payments and the need for multi-fold penetration from its current state, it is imperative that other existing and new players (Banks and Non-Banks) shall scale-up their consumer outreach for the growth of UPI and achieve overall market equilibrium," the NPCI said in a circular. Taking into account the present usage and future potential of UPI, and other relevant factors, "the timelines for compliance of existing third-party app providers (TPAPs) who are exceeding the volume cap, is extended by two (2) years till December 31, 2024 to comply with," said the NPCI. UPI transaction value for November was recorded at Rs 11.90 lakh crore while the transaction count was 7.3 billion. According to the NPCI, UPI processed 7.3 billion transactions worth Rs 12.11 lakh crore in October, riding on festive sales. The request is currently under review,” said a source aware of the development. WhatsApp has been trying to compete with PhonePe and Google Pay, which are the existing leaders in UPI payments. NPCI is reportedly considering increasing the user cap on WhatsApp payments in a phased manner. “NPCI is considering increasing the cap in a phased manner because it cannot handle the huge volumes that might come with removing the cap completely,” the source added. WhatsApp wants NPCI to increase its UPI cap, current limits prevent it from onboarding 95% of its userbase

The National Payments Corporation of India (<keyword id="193629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI">NPCI</keyword>) on Thursday allowed Facebook-owned messaging platform <keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> to start its payments service in the country in a "graded" manner. The announcement by NPCI came minutes after it limited a single third party like WhatsApp or its rivals like Google Pay or Walmart's <keyword id="6357886" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="phonepe">PhonePe</keyword> to handle only 30 per cent of overall <keyword id="6358921" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi">UPI</keyword> transaction volumes by putting a cap. NPCI runs the <keyword id="2736678" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unified-payments-interface">Unified Payments Interface</keyword> (UPI) used for real-time payments between peers or at merchants' end while making purchases. WhatsApp has been running a pilot service for the last two years but was not given a formal go-ahead because of data localisation requirements. "NPCI has given approval for Whatsapp to 'Go Live' on UPI in the multi-bank model. WhatsApp can expand its UPI user base in a graded manner starting with a maximum registered user base of twenty (20) million in UPI," the statement said. NPCI issued two separate statements on WhatsApp and on limiting the transaction volumes. A "cap of 30 per cent of total volume of transactions processed in UPI" will be applicable on all TPAPs from January 1, 2021, NPCI said in a statement. "It will help to address the risks and protect the UPI ecosystem as it further scales up," it added. The cap of 30 per cent will be calculated on the basis of the total volume of transactions processed in UPI during the preceding three months on a rolling basis, as per NPCI. According to the statement, existing TPAPs exceeding the specified cap will have a period of two years from January 2021 to comply with the same in a phased manner. It can be noted that the TPAPs typically tie-up with banks at the back-end to add users and process payments for them. NPCI to hire more than 250 engineering trainees from across the country

Homegrown Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) on Wednesday said it supports and welcomes the proposed implementation of the <keyword id="3880260" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-payments-council-of-india" source="Orion">National Payments Council of India</keyword>'s (<keyword id="193629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="npci" source="Orion">NPCI</keyword>) <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> market cap. With this, the UPI ecosystem in India will see further growth in a democratised manner, encouraging wider participation and ending the market concentration risk, the company said in a statement. PPBL, which owns <keyword id="6076084" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="paytm-upi" source="Orion">Paytm UPI</keyword>, is an NPCI-certified PSP (Payment Service Provider) and Issuer Bank for UPI transactions, and not a Third Party Application Provider (TPAP) and won't come under the purview of NPCI's market cap. The Bank is an Issuer and <keyword id="15597664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="psp-bank" source="Orion">PSP Bank</keyword> in itself along with being an acquirer of UPI transactions on its own platform and serves the customer end-to-end in a transaction. The Bank continues to lead UPI payments as the largest beneficiary bank and a leading remitter bank. According to the latest report by NPCI, as a beneficiary bank, PPBL has registered over 1,614 million transactions and as a remitter bank, it registered more than 362 million transactions in October 2022. "We believe the proposed implementation of UPI market capping will be hugely beneficial for the UPI ecosystem. This move by the NPCI will bolster the growth of digital payments and democratize it for the citizens, ending market concentration risk. With this, UPI will become even more accessible and enable further digital adoption," a Paytm Payments Bank spokesperson told IANS. The bank is now enabling users to make transactions across all UPI payment apps with just the mobile number, and even if it is not registered with Paytm. Paytm Payments Bank supports UPI market cap, maintains leadership as PSP & Issuer Bank

The international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (<keyword id="193629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="npci" source="Orion">NPCI</keyword>) on Thursday announced to deploy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/how-to-use-upi-autopay-to-recharge-jio-number/articleshow/88754552.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Unified Payments Interface</a> (UPI) in Nepal to bolster interoperable real-time person-to-person (P2P), person to merchant (P2M) and potential cross-border P2P remittances between Nepal and India. Nepal is the first country outside India to adopt UPI as the payments platform, driving the digitalisation of cash transactions. The NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the global arm of the NPCI joined hands with the Gateway Payments Service Pvt Ltd, an authorised Payment System Operators in Nepal, and Manam Infotech Private Limited to deploy UPI in the country. "The partnership will enable consumers within Nepal to transact swiftly using state-of-the-art UPI platform and deliver a seamless user experience. We are confident that this initiative will stand as a testimony to NIPL's technological capabilities and vision of scaling our unique offerings globally," said Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NIPL. It will also enable the way forward for real-time cross-border P2P remittances between Nepal and India. In 2021, UPI enabled 39 billion financial transactions amounting to commerce worth $940 billion, which is equivalent to approximately 31 per cent of India's GDP. "The same UPI service has created a significant positive impact in India in terms of the country's digital payment transformation. We expect UPI in Nepal would play a pivotal role in transforming the digital economy of the country and dreams of building a less-cash society," said Rajesh Prasad Manandhar, CEO of GPS. Mobile penetration of over 135 per cent, with 65 per cent of the population using smartphones, provides a bedrock for seamless replication of the digital revolution in India to be replicated in Nepal. NPCI to deploy UPI in Nepal, first country outside India

Mumbai, <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> on Friday said NPCI has been asked to examine the possibility of it becoming a third party application provider for continued <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> operations of the Paytm app. The central bank has barred <keyword id="19907220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-payments-bank" source="keywords">Paytm Payments Bank</keyword> from accepting further credits into its customer accounts and wallets after March 15, 2024. With an aim to ensure seamless digital payments by UPI customers using '@paytm' handle operated by the Paytm Payments Bank, <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> said it has asked the <keyword id="19907219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-payments-corporation-of-india" source="keywords">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) to examine the request to become a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) for UPI channel for continued UPI operation of the Paytm app. The request has been made by One97 Communication Ltd (OCL), which owns the Paytm brand, RBI said in a statement. For seamless migration of '@paytm' handle to other banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said NPCI may facilitate certification of 4-5 banks as Payment Service Provider (PSP) Banks with demonstrated capabilities to process high volume UPI transactions.

Reserve Bank asks NPCI to help continue operations of Paytm app

The <keyword id="394949" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Payments-Corporation">National Payments Corporation</keyword> of India (<keyword id="193629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI">NPCI</keyword>) on Tuesday said that there has been no data compromise pertaining to the <keyword id="4013165" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BHIM-app">BHIM App</keyword> and has requested everyone not to fall prey to such incorrect information. In a statement, the NPCI said that it has conducted an independent verification of the recent news, including through a leading Digital Risk Monitoring firm who has reconfirmed that the claims against the BHIM App are untrue. "There is no data leak with respect to the BHIM app," it said. NPCI said <keyword id="4115852" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CSC-e-Governance-Services-India-Ltd">CSC e-Governance Services India Ltd</keyword> was working in 2018 on a project to educate and activate village level entrepreneurs on digital payments and also educating them to create Merchant Virtual Payment Address (VPA). Most of these VPAs were not valid UPI IDs. Moreover, it said that <keyword id="4003296" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI-ID">UPI ID</keyword> is a virtual ID that is meant to be shared conveniently, instead of real account details. The UPI ID can be used to receive money. The user can simply share his UPI ID with the payer and receive payment directly in his bank account. This is a standard feature used by merchants, who only need to receive money using UPI, it said. Based on the findings from the Digital Risk Monitoring firm, it is ascertained that there is not a single instance of data breach compromising financial details of the customers, the NPCI statement said.

NPCI denies data breach of BHIM mobile app

Mumbai, Mar 9 () After the impact on payments systems following moratorium on Yes Bank, the National Payments Council of India (NPCI) on Monday said it had in 2017 advised third-party apps to have a multi-bank approach. PhonePe's exclusive reliance on Yes Bank to act as its payments partner had resulted in the popular app being unable to render Unified Payment Interface (UPI) transactions for a day last week. "NPCI has been a proponent of the multi-bank model, to ensure full resilience of the ecosystem... In September 2017, NPCI advised large UPI payment app providers for a multi-bank approach," an official statement said. It added that there are already few payment apps operating on the multi-bank model and some of them are in the final phases of migration. Following the service outage, PhonePe switched to ICICI Bank and was able to restart its UPI services late on Saturday. Meanwhile, NPCI, whose role has been welcomed by both ICICI Bank and PhonePe for the help, also appreciated the efforts undertaken by the system for showing the "highest sense of the consumer first approach". NPCI said the last-leg payment service providers also prefer to work with multiple parties to ensure high availability of payment systems, and where required, the payment providers identified alternative partner banks who quickly stepped in to address contingency requirements. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)-promoted body said payment systems have had "minimal disruption" and non-Yes Bank customers can make payments for all their daily requirements. As far as end users are concerned, the introduction of Vajra Platform should make the process of payments even more seamless than it is right now. The use of DLT and the resulting audit trail should also make it easier to track and resolve payment disputes. At the moment, payment disputes raised by users take at least three working days to be resolved. In addition to improving the security of payments and making the process faster, the Vajra Platform will also be used for Aadhaar authentication by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). NPCI Vajra Platform blockchain-based platform launched for secure and fast payments

Hyderabad, July 2 (IANS) The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), the umbrella organization for operating retail payments and settlement systems in the country, will develop its smart data centre in Hyderabad at an investment of Rs 500 crore. Telangana's Minister for Industry and Information Technology K.T.Rama Rao on Thursday laid the foundation stone of the smart data centre that would be recognised as the first Tier IV data centre in Hyderabad. The facility, to be built as per the international standards, will house the national critical set-up with highly secured infrastructure. It will host major services under the Digital India initiatives. The smart data centre would be located in Narsingi village in Ranga Reddy district. With this data centre, Hyderabad will be one of the major hubs for processing payments with a value of almost Rs 15 lakh crore per month and transactions of about 14,000 million per month, according to a statement from the minister's office. The NPCI has chosen Telangana to set up the facility as it is one of the strategic and fastest growing IT corridors in the country with advantage of supportive geographical presence, availability of abundant human resources and best in class network and infrastructure and extraordinary support from the state government. This will add to Telangana brand equity in attracting investments in the Information &amp; Communication Technology (ICT) sector, it said. The proposed smart data centre would ensure high availability up to 99.995 per cent and complied with full redundant infrastructure (N+N) even during natural calamities like earthquakes, cyclones etc. and have modular design for higher sustainability. It is going to be environment friendly with the adoption of green building features, rain water harvesting and solar panels. The centre is being built with an Internet of Things (IoT) based building management system that will have eight layers of security system. NPCI has engaged Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T) as its turnkey contractor for building the centre. NPCI MD &amp; CEO, Dilip Asbe said their focus will always remain on enhancing acceptance infrastructure for digital payments so as to encourage customers towards digital transactions to achieve RBI and government's less cash objective. NPCI to build Rs 500 crore smart data centre in Hyderabad

The National Payments Corporation of India (<keyword id="193629" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="npci" source="Orion">NPCI</keyword>), along with telecom major <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword>, on Thursday announced that <keyword id="9621522" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="upi-autopay" source="Orion">UPI Autopay</keyword> has now been introduced for the telecom industry with Jio. Jio customers can now set standing instructions on the MyJio App using UPI <keyword id="2836894" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="autopay" source="Orion">Autopay</keyword> for their favourite tariff plans. "The combination of Jio's superior prepaid and postpaid plans and UPI Autopay will now be available to every Jio user," Kiran Thomas, Director, Jio, said in a statement. "Jio users will no longer need to remember their recharge renewal date or bill payment date and perform manual payments. This will enable an ALWAYS-ON service experience for every Jio prepaid user," Thomas added. Jio's integration with UPI Autopay has made it the first player in the telecom industry to go live with the unique e-mandate feature that was launched by NPCI. "We are glad to associate with Jio and witness UPI Autopay venturing into the ever-evolving telecom sector. We believe our collaboration will change the way Jio customers experience the renewal of their mobile tariff plans," said Kunal Kalawatia, Chief of Products, NPCI.
