Patna, The second wave of Covid-19 is spreading at a rapid pace in Bihar with the state reporting 935 new cases across 38 districts in the last 24 hours. Of these, the state capital alone reported 432 cases, including 18 students testing positive at the <keyword id="55119" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT) Patna, located on the outskirts of the city in the Bihta sub-town. Confirming the development, the registrar of IIT Patna said that two students returned to the campus after the Holi holidays on Sunday and tested positive for the virus. "As per the Covid protocols, we conducted <keyword id="9043621" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RT-PCR">RT-PCR</keyword> test on those two students and their reports returned positive. Following that, we conducted 41 more tests on students staying in the hostel where the duo stayed. Of these, 16 reports returned positive on Tuesday," the registrar said. "We have converted the hostel into a quarantine centre. Besides, we have also turned the academic building into a quarantine facility for the suspected students. Educational activities on the campus have been suspended for a week," he added. Earlier, Amrit Pratyay, the principal health secretary of Bihar, had said that the health department had conducted 72,418 tests till Monday evening, of which 935 were found to be positive across the state. "The second wave of Corona is spreading at a more rapid pace as compared to last year. It is more dangerous than Phase 1. We have added 10 ICU beds in AIIMS Patna, taking the total number of ICU beds to 30. 18 students at IIT Patna test Covid positive, total 935 cases in Bihar in last 24 hours

Patna, May 18 () A 75-year-old woman died due to COVID-19 at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) here on Monday, as the death toll mounted to nine in Bihar, a senior health department official said. Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar said the patient hailed from Vaishali district. She was also suffering from advanced stage of lung cancer, he said. The woman was admitted to ICU of NMCH on May 16 after being referred from Sadar hospital, Vaishali, he said, adding she did not have any travel history either abroad or any other coronavirus-hit state. The COVID-19 fatality count in Bihar comprises two patients each from Patna and Vaishali districts and one each from Khagaria, Rohtas, Munger, East Champaran and Sitamarhi districts. AR SNS CK

Eleven patients were cured and discharged from the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) here, he said, adding that number of patients who have recovered so far stands at 56 and two fatalities recorded.Of the fresh cases, six are in Rohtas, five in Gopalganj, four in East Champaran, three in Arwal and one in Jehanabad, Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar said."We are ascertaining their infection trail," he said, adding that the four COVID-19 infected persons in East Champaran are migrants from Mumbai and Delhi.With a confirmed case being reported from Jehanabad, the contagion has now spread to 22 out of 38 districts of the state.Twenty-eight people were found coronavirus positive on Saturday. Bihar had on Friday witnessed the biggest spike in COVID-19 cases when 53 people tested positive for the dreaded virus. Patna, May 10 () A 60-year-old COVID-19 patient died at the Patna Medical College and Hospital on Sunday, taking the total number of persons who died after being diagnosed with <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> infection to six, a top health official said. The state also reported 67 fresh cases, the highest single-day spike, raising the total to 696, Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar said. The man, who died at the PMCH, was a resident of Belchi area in Barh in Patna district, Kumar said, adding he was in quarantine after returning from Delhi. He was admitted to the state-run hospital on May 8, the official said. "It was a case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (end stage lung disease), died of cardio respiratory arrest," Kumar said in a tweet. Earlier, Rohtas, Munger, Vaishali, East Champaran and Sitamarhi have reported one death each. Of the 67 fresh cases, 11 each were reported from Nalanda and Munger, nine each from Bhagalpur and Patna, eight from Kishanganj, four from East Champaran, three each from Muzaffarpur and Arwal, two each from Gaya and Nawada, and one each from Araria, Aurangabad, Bhojpur, Samastipur and Khagaria. He was suffering from "terminal stage" lung cancer and died of cardiac arrest. A 54-year-old person from East Champaran who was also suffering from cancer in mouth and throat died at NMCH on May 1, while a 38-year-old person from Munger was the first COVID-19 patient in the state to die. He died on March 21 at the AIIMS-Patna where he was admitted with renal failure and respiratory distress. Another COVID-19 patient from Vaishali, the second casualty in the state, also died at AIIMS-Patna. There are 336 active cases in the state at present, while 354 people have recovered from the infection. Munger has accounted for the most number of cases at 104, while Buxar has reported 56 cases, Rohtas (59) and Patna (58), Siwan (33), Nalanda (39) and Kaimur (33). These are among those districts worst hit by the outbreak. The number of samples tested so far at the seven facilities in Patna, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga was 34,150.

67 new coronavirus cases reported in Bihar till 10th May, Total cases 696

Patna, May 4 () Eleven more people, including four minors, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in Bihar to 528 so far, a top official said. Among the fresh cases, seven are male and four female from five districts. While five of the patients hail from Jhanjhapur in Madhubani district, two each belong to Begusarai and Kaimur and one each are from West Champaran and Samastipur, Health Department's Principal Secretary, Sanjay Kumar, said in a tweet. We are ascertaining their infection trail, Kumar said. Those infected includes an eight-year-old boy and two girls of 12 and 18 years from Jhanjharpur and a 14-year-old boy from Chainpur in Kaimur district, he added. With Samastipur reporting its first COVID-19 positive patient from Vidyapati Nagar, the outbreak has spread to 32 out of 38 districts of the state. A 25-year-old man had reached his home at Vidyapati Nagar from New Delhi on April 26 by a truck, District Magistrate Shashank Shubhankar said, adding that he was shifted to a quarantine centre soon after the authorities got information about him. His sample which was sent earlier has been found positive, the DM added. The state has reported four fatalities so far, one each from Munger, Vaishali, East Champaran and Sitamarhi and is now left with 400 active cases while 124 have recovered. (Eds: With fresh updates) Patna, May 13 () A 56-year-old woman became the seventh COVID-19 casualty in Bihar on Wednesday while a 20-day-old boy was among 53 people who tested positive for coronavirus, as the state's tally rose to 932, a top official said. According to Principal Secretary (Health) Sanjay Kumar, the woman and the 20-day-old boy -- the youngest COVID-19 patient in the state so far -- were from Patna district, which is the second worst affected city in the state with 94 confirmed cases till date. Of the 94 COVID-19 cases in Patna, about 20 are the personnel deployed at the Bihar Military Police's 14th Battalion in Khajpura locality, which accounts for nearly half of the cases in the district. The 56-year-old woman, a resident of Alamganj locality in the city, breathed her last at NMCH hospital following a "cardiopulmonary arrest", the principal secretary said, adding that she suffered from multiple ailments like cancer of the gall bladder, acute renal failure, obstructive jaundice, hemorrhoids with active bleeding and sepsis. She was recently diagnosed with cancer at the Mahavir Arogya Sansthan charitable hospital in the city from where she was referred to NMCH on May 8. Her sample was collected the next day and reports on May 10 confirmed that she was COVID-19 positive, Kumar said, adding that she had no travel history and no contact history. The baby boy is a resident of Belchhi block in rural Patna, which is emerging as yet another COVID-19 hotspot. Besides the child, a 49-year-old Belchhi resident and two women from Patna city are among the 53 people who tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday. Other districts from where coronavirus cases were reported during the day included Nawada (nine), Bhojpur (seven), Bhagalpur (six) and Siwan and Banka (four each). Buxar, which heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday when it was left with zero active cases, reported three fresh cases. Begusarai, Muzaffarpur, Rohtas and Khagaria reported three coronavirus cases each. In addition, two cases were reported from Gopalganj and one each from Madhubani and Kaimur. All 38 districts in the state have reported COVID-19 cases and Munger tops the list with a tally of 116. Significant number of cases have also been reported from Rohtas (75), Nalanda (63) and Buxar (59). Patna district accounts for two deaths, the latest demise coming a few days after a middle-aged man from Belchhi had died at a hospital. The state home department has issued a notification announcing that it is closing down one of its offices situated inside the Patel Bhawan, which also houses the Police Headquarters, for sanitisation after one of its staff members came in contact with a COVID-19 patient. Munger, Vaishali, East Champaran, Sitamarhi and Rohtas districts reported one death each. Barring the 70-year-old victim from Rohtas, all were under 60 years of age and had comorbidities. A steep hike in COVID-19 cases has been witnessed, of late, in the state which reported its first two cases on March 22. Much of the recent spurt has been attributed to the return of migrants from other parts of the country, by special trains running every day. Nearly 1.5 lakh people have returned to Bihar from places where they were stuck during the lockdown. (Eds: With latest inputs) Patna, Apr 7 () The mother and wife of a COVID-19 patient in Siwan district of Bihar tested positive for the virus on Tuesday, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 34, a top official said. Principal Secretary of Health Sanjay Kumar said the women, aged 45 and 22, are the mother and wife of a COVID-19 patient who had travelled to the Middle East and returned on March 21. However, the number of active cases in the state has dropped to 18 with six patients from Munger, five from Patna and four from Siwan districts having fully recovered, he said. Of these, three residents of Patna -- a 45-year-old woman and two men in their 20s -- had recovered a week ago. Earlier, it was stated by the department that five patients each from the three districts had recovered. Notably, the state had witnessed its sharpest decline in the number of active cases between Sunday and Monday when no one tested positive while as many as six persons, including a woman, were discharged from hospitals after full recovery. Munger, which accounted for the states only casualty last month, and Patna are now left with no case. Gaya is now left with the highest number of five active cases followed by Siwan (four), Gopalganj (three), Nalanda (two) and Begusarai, Saran, Lakhisarai and Bhagalpur (one each). Chief Minister Nitish Kumar issued a statement congratulating all those who have been discharged from hospitals upon full recovery, for their successful battle against what has turned out to be a worldwide pandemic. Among the 12 who have been discharged in the last few days are two women -- a nurse from Patna and a resident of Munger -- and a 12-year-old boy from the same district. The Munger woman and the boy were neighbours of the state's lone deceased patient who got admitted to AIIMS, Patna for renal failure and breathed his last before test results confirmed that he was COVID 19 positive. The nurse worked at a private hospital in the state capital where the deceased was admitted before being referred to the AIIMS here. Only four of the 12 recovered patients all men in the age group of 20 to 35 years and hailing from Siwan had travel histories to Nigeria, Oman, UAE and Bahrain. The remaining eight had caught the infection upon coming into contact with some other patient, the principal secretary said. All the six Munger patients underwent treatment at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLMNCH), Bhagalpur. The remaining were treated at NMCH, Patna, he said. The NMCH was declared as a hospital dedicated to COVID-19 last month. while the same was done with respect to the JLMNCH, Bhagalpur and ANMCH in Gaya recently, the official added. According to the state health department, at least 4,062 samples had been tested till Tuesday morning at four facilities in Bihar RMRI, IGIMS and PMCH in Patna and DMCH in Darbhanga. No positive case has been reported so far from PMCH where testing of samples commenced on Monday and DMCH where more than 100 samples have been examined till date. A majority of tests have, however, been conducted at RMRI an ICMR centre here where a total of 3,257 samples were tested till Tuesday morning. The state, which has been moderately affected by the calamity and yet been proactive in taking preventive action, has identified as many as 276 buildings across Bihar mostly hotels and hostels, for setting up quarantine centres. Patna, May 1 () A 54-year-old COVID-19 patient hailing from East Champaran district breathed his last at a Patna hospital on Friday, taking the death toll to three in the state, a top official said here. Principal Secretary, Home, Sanjay Kumar said the patient had been admitted to the NMCH hospital here on April 27 and his death was caused by cardiac arrest. He also said that the patient had a serious case of terminal oropharyngeal malignancy (cancer of mouth and throat) and he apparently contracted the infection at Mumbai, where he had been eking out a living. The 54-year-old man, a resident of Banjaria in East Champaran, had returned from the western Champaran on April 20 along with two other residents of the village. All of them tested positive for coronavirus on April 26. This is the third instance of a COVID-19 patient dying in Bihar. On March 21, a Munger resident, who also suffered from renal failure, died at AIIMS-Patna, a day before test reports confirmed that he was infected with coronavirus as well. A 35-year-old man from Vaishali district, who suffered from multiple ailments, including tuberculosis, typhoid and brain fever besides having tested positive for COVID 19, died while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Patna on April 17. Bihar reports third COVID-19 death

Patna, May 25 () Bihar has reported 180 new cases of COVID-19 from 15 districts, pushing the tally to 2,574 in the state, the health department said. Of the fresh cases, Nawada and East Champaran accounted for 11 each and the state capital Patna recorded four new infections, it said. The health department, in a tweet late on Sunday evening, said,"63 more COVID-19 +ve cases in Bihar taking the total to 2,574... We are ascertaining their trail of infection". Earlier on Sunday, the state had registered 117 new positive cases and two fatalities due to the contagion, taking the death toll to 13. A 60-year-old man from Siwan died at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), Patna, while another 48-year-old COVID-19 positive patient from Saran passed away on Saturday, but the health department informed about the death on Sunday. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those who died due to COVID-19. The state now has 1,859 active cases, while 702 patients have recovered from the disease and been discharged from hospitals, the bulletin said. Patna tops the state's COVID-19 list with 200 cases followed by Rohtas at 165. All of them testedpositive for coronavirus on April 26.Forty-one fresh cases were reported in a day in Katihar, Buxar, Rohtas, Madhubani, Kaimur and Bhojpur.The state had reported its first couple of coronavirus cases on March 22 and the number rose at a moderate speed, taking four weeks to cross the three-digit-mark on April 19. 6 new COVID-19 cases reported in Bihar, total reaches 38

(Eds: With more updates) Patna, May 2 () Bihar registered its fourth COVID-19 death on Saturday and the total number of cases in the state rose to 481 with 15 fresh instances of the respiratory infection, a top official said.The 45-year-old man who died on Saturday happened to be a lung cancer patient from Sitamarhi district and had suffered cardio-respiratory arrest. He was admitted to the NMCH hospital here two days ago, Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar said.On Friday, a 54-year-old COVID-19 positive patient from East Champaran, who also suffered from mouth and throat cancer, had died at the same hospital.Incidentally, both these persons had travelled to Mumbai for treatment at the Tata Memorial Hospital known to specialize in cancer treatment. They were suspected to have contracted the virus in that city which has been the biggest cluster of COVID-19 cases in the country.In late March and mid-April, one patient each had died at AIIMS, Patna where they had been admitted for treatment of other serious ailments but test reports suggested that they were infected with coronavirus as well. They were from Munger and Vaishali districts.On Saturday, fresh cases were reported from Buxar, Kaimur, Saran, Katihar and Araria districts. With two fresh cases from Naya Bhojpur village, a hotspot from where most of the cases in Bauxar district have been reported so far, the total number of cases in the district reached 53, making it the second most affected in the state.Munger has reported the maximum number of 95 cases so far. Rohtas is third with 52 cases.Bhojpur and Kaimur districts, which share their borders with Buxar, reported six and three fresh cases respectively. Two of the patients in Kaimur happen to be police personnel. On April 25, four police personnel had tested COVID-19 positive in the district.Katihar reported two fresh cases while Araria and Saran reported one fresh case each.According to the state health department, nine people have been cured of the disease in the last 24 hours. The deceased was the resident of Jandaha Hajipur of Vaishali district and died at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital on Monday, Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar said, adding that she died of "cardiopulmonary arrest." The woman was admitted on May 16 in ICU of NMCH after she was referred from Sadar hospital, Vaishali, he said, adding that the patient did not have any travel history nor any contact history. The contagion has claimed a total of nine lives till date that includes two deaths each from Patna and Vaishali while one each from Khagaria, Rohtas, Munger, East Champaran and Sitamarhi. Among the 97 fresh positive cases reported from different districts on Monday, Gopalganj constituted the highest at 31, followed by 14 in Begusarai. Seven cases were reported from Munger, six each from Supaul and Nalanda, five from Muzaffarpur, four each from Bhagalpur, Madhubani and Vaishali, three each from Katihar and Saran, two each from Arwal and Bhojpur and one each from Patna, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nawada, Purnea and Kaimur. Of the 1,423 positive cases in the state, 652 are migrant labourers who have come from outside the state. Out of 652 positive migrant labourers, the maximum 218 have come from Delhi followed by 141 from Maharashtra, 139 from Gujarat, 36 from Haryana, and 33 from West Bengal. Talking to reporters, Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said that more than five lakh migrant labourers, students and other passengers have come to Bihar till May 17 in 320 special trains and buses. Around 8.20 lakh more migrant labourers are expected to come to Bihar by 505 special trains in the next eight to nine days, Agarwal said, adding that 76,000 labourers and other passengers arrived in the state by 47 trains on Monday. Officials said 499 have recovered from COVID-19 and the number of active cases was 915. With 165 cases, Patna topped the list of positive cases for the first time since the state reported its first positive case on March 21. Munger with 133 cases stood second. The other badly affected districts include Rohtas (91), Nalanda (74), Madhubani (73), Begusarai (70), Buxar (62), Khagaria (55), Siwan (45).
