Yet too many women continue to drop out of the workforce mid-career due to childcare and family responsibilities. “Organizations across sectors have taken conscious steps to create an enabling environment for women as well creating the right infrastructure at the workplace to support the growth of women. The gender parity has improved significantly, with 28% organizations not differentiating between male and female apprentices. There is still a long path to walk, but the ecosystem is definitely getting more conducive and encouraging,” told Sumit Kumar, Vice President at <keyword id="8169255" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NETAP">NETAP</keyword>, TeamLease. However, there are a few companies, including tech giants like Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and SAP — that have gone beyond the basics.

This is a big setback for the government which is looking to skill a large section of its population. “We believe India is hugely underinvested as far as the apprenticeship programme is concerned and has to make amends because more than 40-45 years of slackness has led to the current levels of skilling in our country,” Ravi Vishwanath, CFO of TeamLease <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/hiring-should-revive-in-a-month-says-teamlease-cfo/articleshow/71390958.cms">told </a>ET. The job crisis in the country will also show a reverse trend, according to Vishwanath. But manufacturing and services space are going against the basic trend, as over 40% of them are keen to hire apprentices. “The visible shift is in the intake of apprentices due to increase in growth rate of the services sector. So far, it was the manufacturing sector that was taking apprentices. But now there is an active participation by the services sector as well,” <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/india-inc-bullish-on-apprentice-hiring-study/articleshow/71733379.cms?from=mdr">said</a> Sumit Kumar, VP (NETAP) at TeamLease Skill University. In fact, when it comes to trade apprentices, employers prefer to hire highschoolers as compared to graduates. The western region is most likely to show a positive hiring sentiment in terms of apprenticeship, followed by north. “Most employers engage apprentices with the purpose of meeting the skill requirements of the company, to boost productivity and to reduce costs. The prevailing economic slowdown has taken a toll on all major industries, and companies are hesitant to hire apprentices that will in turn be a burden on their current financial situation,” Kumar added. The study surveyed nearly 500 employers across 12 sectors. Companies hire apprentices — who are fresh graduates hired as trainees for a stipulated time. These apprentices are given a stipend of nearly ₹12,000 per month. Three in five companies in India are not planning to hire apprentices, survey says

Mumbai, Dec 30 () Fast-moving consumer goods and durables (FMCG/D) companies are keen on hiring apprentices to meet their talent requirements, according to a report.
 According to the report by National Employability Through Apprenticeship Program (NETAP) and TeamLease Skills University, around 45 per cent of the FMCG/D industry has expressed inclination to hire apprentices.
 The country's eastern region was on the top with 46 per cent companies showing interest to hire apprentices, followed by southern (42 per cent), northern (41 per cent) and western (34 per cent) regions, according to the report titled 'Apprenticeship Outlook and Index'. 
 The report is based on a survey of 502 employers across 12 sectors and four regions, on the current levels of hiring of apprentices and employer sentiment.
 It also includes the Apprenticeship Index (comprising the Candidate Index and the Employer Index), which measures the effectiveness of the apprenticeship programmes in India.
 "We are delighted to see the positive conviction among FMCG/D players who are extensively looking at hiring apprentices. The employers are fast realising the potential of apprenticeship to meet their talent requirements.
 With betterment in ease of doing business, strengthening of product development and distribution capabilities, coupled with rising consumerism, we expect the demand for apprentices to grow stronger," Sumit Kumar, vice-president of NETAP at TeamLease Skill University, said.
 The report also showed that western and northern are the country's highest-paying regions. 
 Further, it said around 89 per cent of the employers preferred a six-month to one-year tenure rather than short-duration apprentices. 
 About 30 per cent of the respondent employers engage apprentices with the purpose of meeting the skill requirements of the company mainly for cost-effective talent creation and enhanced productivity, it added. SM RUJ

Indian companies are hiring more interns than before to save costs and make up for workforce shortage

A recent study by McKinsey &amp; Company said that the companies that have a higher share of women in their senior management teams outshined those with few or no women. In fact, research shows that over 30% of the non-technical roles are represented by women — including 11% participation in the leadership roles. “Today there are many women who are active in roles like machine operators, cab drivers, construction workers, field sales etc. The organisations have undertaken advanced skilling initiatives to improve the employability and productivity of the workforce.  Women represent 44% of the workforce in Accenture, globally. It was one of the first companies to measure gender ratio. The tech giant is focussed at achieving a gender balanced workforce in the next five years and having 25% women in leadership roles. It offers executive sponsorship to promote equality. The sponsors invest in learning and development of women employees, under its ‘Grow Women in Leadership’ programme. Since 2016, more than 500 women executives at senior levels in India have benefited from this global initiative. “We hire, retain and grow women to have long and fulfilling careers through a combination of investments to remove the challenges that women face with staying in work including career pathing, learning &amp; development and childcare &amp; family friendly policies,” Accenture said.
