Tune into any bit of news these days, and you’re bound to come across the <keyword id="19978984" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neet" source="keywords">NEET</keyword> controversy. With allegations of <keyword id="20118897" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bribery" source="keywords">bribery</keyword>, paper leaks and a dozen other crimes making for some murky water ahead for India’s future medical aspirations, there is no wonder the <keyword id="20039944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scam" source="keywords">scam</keyword> has been plastered all over the news cycle over the past week. NEET, which stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, is a mandatory test a student must attempt if they wish to pursue <keyword id="21099893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medical-courses" source="keywords">medical courses</keyword> in India and abroad. This extremely competitive exam is conducted once a year by the National Testing Agency (<keyword id="19985628" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTA" source="keywords">NTA</keyword>) in different locations all over the country, where students can score between -180 and 720 marks. Nearly 24 lakh aspirants participated from 4,750 centres this year. "The gang had been plotting this for several months and it was a professor from Hazaribagh who had sent the question papers to Sanjeev using WhatsApp. Later, with the help of medical students from Patna and Ranchi, the paper was solved," explained a top official to ToI. Photocopied versions of the paper were given to around 30 candidates staying at a “safe house” in Patna. One of the petitions, filed by 20 students who appeared in the medical entrance exam, also sought a direction to the NTA and others to conduct the test afresh. While hearing separate pleas concerning the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate)-2024 examination, the apex court had on June 18 said that even if there was "0.001 per cent negligence" on the part of anyone in the conduct of the examination, it should be thoroughly dealt with. While hearing separate petitions raising grievances over the NEET-UG 2024, the apex court had last week sought responses from the Centre and the NTA on a plea for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into allegations of question paper leak and other irregularities in the exam. SC notice to govt, NTA on pleas for cancelling NEET-UG 2024

The National Testing Agency (<keyword id="19985628" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTA" source="keywords">NTA</keyword>) on Monday announced the results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) retest held on June 23, for 1563 candidates. The NTA in a public notice June 30 also declared the revision of the rank of all candidates who appeared in the exam. The retest was held on June 23 after a controversy erupted regarding the awarding of grace marks to certain students. The notice further stated that the revised scorecards of all the candidates of the NEET UG 2024 exam, including the 1563 candidates who appeared for the retest on June 23 would be hosted on the website. Earlier, amid the ongoing row over the NEET-UG exam, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shazia Ilmi on June 30 said that the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has taken moral responsibility for the issue and that an investigation is being carried out. "Investigation is being carried out in this matter and we need to hold serious deliberations instead of political stunts or playing a blame game. This is a serious issue and we see that the student community and their parents are affected because of this," she said. The NEET UG examination was conducted by the National Testing Agency on May 5, 2024 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities in the country, 14 cities abroad and with 23 lakh candidates appearing for the examination. NTA announces re-test results, revised rank list of 1563 candidates of NEET exam

A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta, and S Ravindra Bhat asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to discuss with ministries concerned whether students who wish to visit India to sit in the NEET exam could be accommodated on the Vande Bharat Mission flights. The court also asked Mehta to explore the possibility that aspirants based out of the Middle East countries were permitted to board such flights. The bench also noted that the incoming students are permitted to approach the state governments concerned for relaxations in quarantine periods. According to the rules, people arriving in India from abroad are required to undergo 14-day quarantine in the interest of public health. The Supreme Court orally directed Mehta to inform the ministries concerned that these students may be allowed to come back to take the exam. Mehta contended before the bench that the issue could be taken care of, subject to quarantine requirements and that they establish that they were coming for the exam. The top court told the petitioners' counsel that he could ask his clients to plan their return in the backdrop of quarantine requirements. The counsel argued that many students abroad intended to sit in both the NEET and Joint Entrance Exams (JEE). The petitioners said that only 6-day gap between JEE (September 1-6) and NEET exam (September 13) was also an issue. The petitioners had moved the apex court to challenge a Kerala High Court order to dismiss their plea to set up examination centres abroad, or postpone the exams due to the pandemic. The Centre has already decided not to postpone the NEET and JEE exams. Supreme Court declines plea to set up NEET exam centre abroad

Student organisations of INDIA bloc parties, including <keyword id="21322962" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSUI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NSUI" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NSUI">NSUI</keyword>, AISF, and AISA, will hold <keyword id="20024974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="demonstrations" source="keywords">demonstrations</keyword> across the country on July 3 against the alleged "<keyword id="20039944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scam" source="keywords">scam</keyword> and <keyword id="20500825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="corrupt-practices" source="keywords">corrupt practices</keyword>" of the National Testing Agency (<keyword id="19985628" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nta" source="keywords">NTA</keyword>), announced NSUI President Varun Chaudhary on Tuesday. The student organisations of INDIA alliance partners held a joint press conference demanding a "ban of NTA," the resignation of Union Education Minister <keyword id="19897147" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dharmendra-Pradhan" source="keywords">Dharmendra Pradhan</keyword> and holding the NEET exam again. The press conference was attended by representatives of AISF, AISA, NSUI, Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, SFI and CRJD. 'We are United here to address the issue of scams and corrupt practices carried out by NTA and the issue of NEET students," said NSUI president Varum Chaudhary. Putting forth their three demands, Chaudhary said, " We want the government to disband the NTA. We want Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to take responsibility and step down. The third thing we want is that NEET to be held again." NTA is grappling with controversy over alleged irregularities in the entrance exams, including the NEET and UGC NET. After irregularities resurfaced in the NEET and UGC NET exams, the central government postponed several exams, including the NEET PG. The opposition parties and several student organisations have been holding protests regularly, demanding action. Addressing the joint press conference, the national president of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, Imran Idris, demanded that government be held accountable. " Government should answer. Union Minister Dharmerndra Pradhan should answer. We want NTA be banned and Pradhan should resign." Viraaj Devang. The General Secretary of AISF reiterated the three demands and targeted the government for creating the education system. "NEET-like entrance exam should be removed.NTA scams and problems should not be seen in isolation. And the agenda is to how to throw backward people out of education system," Devang said "I urge the government to not play with the future of students of the country," he added.
