He attributed this growth to the widespread adoption of mobile trading applications and increasing <keyword id="22504349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-awareness" source="keywords">investor awareness</keyword>, aptly supported by government <keyword id="20327350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-initiatives" source="keywords">digital initiatives</keyword> that have democratized market access, particularly benefiting investors from Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities. While Maharashtra led the list with 3.6 crore accounts, UP was next with 2.2 crore accounts, followed by Gujarat with 1.8 crore accounts. Rajasthan and West Bengal also made it to the list with 1.2 crore accounts each. Notably, these five states collectively account for approximately 50% of total client accounts, while the top ten states represent about three-quarters of the total registrations. Additionally, the unique registered investor base on NSE stood at 10.5 crore, having crossed the 10-crore mark on August 8, 2024. <h2><keyword id="20849031" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="young-investors" source="keywords">Young investors</keyword> take the lead</h2>Another notable trend that emerged from NSE's latest report is the significant increase in young investor participation. The proportion of investors under 30 years has nearly doubled, rising from 22.9% in March 2018 to 40% by September 2024. Middle-aged investors, aged between 30 and 39, have maintained their participation in the markets, albeit with a slight hit. On the other hand, investors aged between 40 and 49 have witnessed a dip in market participation, dipping to 15.5% in September 2024, as opposed to 20.3% as of March 2018. Similar downtrends were noticed in other age brackets as well, namely 50-59 and 60+ age cohorts. Financial analysts suggest that younger investors bring a new dynamic to the market, often favoring high-growth, technology-driven investments. In contrast, older investors have traditionally leaned toward more stable and conservative options.

NSE client base surges past 20 crore mark; young investors lead market growth

In FY25, Punjab is set to experience financial challenges as its capital-to-revenue expenditure ratio is the lowest among all states, standing at just 6.2%, highlighted a research report by the <keyword id="19938957" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Stock-Exchange" source="keywords">National Stock Exchange</keyword> (NSE). This means that for every rupee Punjab spends, a very small portion is being allocated towards capital expenditure, which is crucial for long-term <keyword id="19971350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infrastructure-development" source="keywords">infrastructure development</keyword>. In contrast, the research showed that the states like Gujarat lead the way with a much higher ratio of 36.2%, signaling a stronger focus on capital spending that can drive future growth. "The capital-to-revenue expenditure ratio, a measure of expenditure quality, is set at 20.7 % for FY25BE, declining from 21.2 % in FY24RE. Punjab has the lowest ratio at 6.2 %, while Gujarat leads at 36.2 %" said the report. The report also highlighted that the overall, capital expenditure by Indian states is expected to moderate in FY25 after three years of strong growth. It stated that the total capital spending for the fiscal year is estimated to increase by just 6.5 % to Rs 6.5 lakh crore. This is a notable slowdown compared to the sharp 39.3 % rise in FY24, which was marked by a post-pandemic push to boost infrastructure and public projects. The capital-to-revenue expenditure ratio, a key indicator of the quality of spending, is also set to decline slightly to 20.7 %in FY25 from 21.2 %in FY24, reflecting a more cautious approach by states. At the same time, revenue expenditure, which covers recurring costs like salaries, subsidies, and interest payments, is expected to grow by 8.9 % to Rs 44.2 lakh crore. This is the slowest growth in the last four years, indicating tighter control over everyday spending. "<keyword id="23614983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="committed-expenditure" source="keywords">Committed expenditure</keyword> (interest payments and pensions), on the other hand, remains high, comprising about 24 % of total revenue expenditure and consuming nearly a quarter of revenue receipts" the report added. Despite this, the report noted that a large portion of revenue expenditure remains committed to non-discretionary costs. Interest payments and pensions alone account for about 24 % of total revenue expenditure and consume nearly a quarter of the revenue receipts, limiting states' flexibility in spending. Some states are more burdened than others by this committed expenditure. Punjab, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have earmarked over 35 %of their revenue receipts for these fixed costs in FY25, putting additional pressure on their finances. This leaves less room for discretionary spending and makes it harder for these states to invest in development and growth-oriented projects.

Sector-wise, domestic cyclical will lead the way while IT is coming back in favour of selective names," said Ajay Bagga, <keyword id="19913381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market" source="keywords">Market</keyword> and Banking expert. "The markets have weathered the geopolitical news flow, the disorderly Yen carry trade unwinding moves, and the minor panic on an incipient US slowdown leading to a hard landing. The Nifty 50 index began on April 22, 1996, with a starting value of 1136.28 points and has crossed the 25,100 milestone today, marking a growth of nearly 22 times.

The market analysts say that in the coming week, investors will be looking at the American Fed comments, which is expected to cut policy rates in its next monetary announcement, after the end of the domestic earning season. "With the earnings season concluded, attention will now shift to global markets for cues, particularly in light of the notable recovery in U.S. markets, which has eased recession fears," said," Ajit Mishra - SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd. "Domestically, market participants will be watching institutional flows and upcoming economic data, such as the HSBC India Manufacturing PMI and HSBC India Services PMI, for direction," he added. Observing a cautious approach of the investors, Bagga stated that the markets are now worried about the Fed rate cuts that could lead to weaker stock markets over the next few months. However, he expressed his optimism saying there have been instances where the correction has been short-lived and shallow. "Given that we are at a mid-cycle US economic consolidation, rather than a full-blown, or incipient US recession, this time around may prove to be an instance of a shallow and short-lived market correction," Bagga added. In the last week, global markets provided a boost to investor sentiment. In the US, recent economic data pointed to a slowdown in inflation, with the CPI dropping to a three-year low of 2.9%. Retail sales in July also exceeded expectations, growing by 1%, which fueled speculation that the US <keyword id="19904332" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="federal-reserve" source="keywords">Federal Reserve</keyword> may cut interest rates by 50 basis points in September. Indian stock market will be looking at global cues in upcoming week, say analysts

According to a report by the National Stock Exchange (NSE), out of the 9.7 crore <keyword id="22721559" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="registered-investors" source="keywords">registered investors</keyword>, only 1.5 crore are active. The report highlights that active investors on the NSE surged by 13.9 % month-on-month, reaching 1.5 crore in June. This marks the third consecutive month of growth in active market users. The NSE report shows that the number of individuals trading at least once a month grew by 13.1% in June, compared to May, reflecting a strong trend in <keyword id="21427519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-participation" source="keywords">market participation</keyword>. "The number of individual investors who traded at least once in June increased across regions. This individual investor base rose by 13.9 % month-on-month to reach 1.5 crore in June 2024," the report noted. It also points out that there has been a steady rise in active domestic investors after a decline earlier in the year, particularly in March. As of June, the number of active domestic market investors on the NSE from the top 10 states--Maharashtra, Gujarat, <keyword id="19894922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="keywords">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana--stood at 1.2 crore. Maharashtra led the increase in June, significantly contributing to the new and active investor base in the stock markets. "Following a decline in March 2024, the count of individuals who traded at least once has been on a steady rise, increasing by 13.1% month-on-month to 1.2 crore for the top 10 states in June 2024," the NSE report stated. The report also noted a year-on-year growth in the number of registered investors. The total number of registered users reached 9.7 crore at the end of June, up from approximately 7.6 crore the previous year. "The total number of registered investors stood at 9.7 crore at the end of June, up from around 7.6 crore at the same time last year," the report added. Region-wise, Southern and Eastern India saw significant increases, with active investor bases rising by 16.8 % month-on-month to 29.1 lakh and 15.6 % month-on-month to 16.7 lakh, respectively. The Northern and Western regions also experienced growth, with investor bases reaching 55 lakh and 56 lakh, respectively, in June 2024. <h2>Nifty on the rise</h2>The <keyword id="20641216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-50" source="keywords">Nifty 50</keyword> index began on April 22, 1996, with a starting value of 1136.28 points and has recently crossed 25,000 points, marking a growth of nearly 22 times. In less than four years from its inception, the index climbed to 1592.90 points, showcasing early signs of its potential. By December 2, 2004, just before the start of 2005, the Nifty 50 achieved a historic milestone by crossing the 2000-point mark, setting the stage for further growth amid challenges. The global financial crisis of 2008 tested the resilience of the Indian stock market. At the start of the year, the Nifty 50 was trading around 6,300 points, but by the end of 2008, it had plummeted to 2,500 points, reflecting the global economic turmoil. Despite this setback, India's <keyword id="20172097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-sector" source="keywords">financial sector</keyword> demonstrated remarkable strength. By December 31, 2009, less than a year after the crisis, the Nifty 50 had rebounded to 5,200 points. By 2021, the Nifty 50 surpassed the 15,000-point mark, and the rally continued unabated. On August 1, 2024, the index achieved a new milestone, reaching 25,000 points. The Nifty 50 hit the 20,000-point mark for the first time on September 11, 2023, and took 221 trading days from that level to reach 25,000 points on August 1, 2024. This journey from the early days of 1136.28 points to the recent milestone of 25,000 points underscores the evolution of the Indian financial sector and its integral role in the country's economic development. Commenting on the Nifty's journey, Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert, stated that "the journey of the Nifty reflects the growth of the Indian economy and various sectors. When the Nifty was created in the mid-1990s, the top companies were very different, from very different sectors. In these three years, IT, Pharma, Real Estate, Autoancillaries, and Telecom have emerged as new sectors with significant shares in the Nifty market cap. Going ahead, in the decades to come, there will again be a sectoral rotation as e-commerce, artificial intelligence, fintech and health tech companies rise to prominence."

Markets hit new milestones, robust surge in active traders as investor numbers soar

On the <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE" source="keywords">BSE</keyword>, it climbed 12.11 % to settle at Rs 262.45 per piece. In the intra-day trade, shares of Zomato advanced to 19% to hit a 52-week high of Rs 278.70 and 278.45 apiece on the NSE and BSE, respectively. At the end of the market close, the company's <keyword id="20000950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-capitalisation" source="keywords">market capitalisation</keyword> (mcap) stood at Rs 2.31 lakh crore, up by Rs 25,024.51 crore on the BSE. On the volume front, 38.9 crore equity shares of Zomato were traded on the NSE while 2.98 crore shares exchanged hands on the BSE during the day. The 30-share <keyword id="19950208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bse-sensex" source="keywords">BSE Sensex</keyword> plunged 885.60 points or 1.08% to close at 80,981.95 while the broader Nifty of NSE slipped 293.20 points or 1.17 % to end at 24,717.70. Zomato, on Thursday, reported a multi-fold jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 253 crore for the April-June period of FY25, compared to Rs 2 crore in the year-ago period. The company's revenue from operations jumped more than 74% to Rs 4,206 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal from Rs 2,416 crore in the April-June period of last year, according to a regulatory filing by Zomato. Its total expenses also rose to Rs 4,203 crore during the quarter under review, from Rs 2,612 crore a year ago.

Zomato shares zoom over 12% after strong Q1 results

The exchange is in the process of taking disciplinary action against the trading member. "It has been brought to the notice of the Exchange that Mr Amit Lilhare (PAN: ADFPL4472R), Authorised Person of one of our registered Stock Broker, operating through various addresses (mentioned below) is providing assured/guaranteed returns on investment in the stock market and is also collecting a commission on such assured/guaranteed returns from investors in his personal bank accounts," NSE's advisory read. Further, investors are advised not to share their trading credentials such as user id/password with anyone. In other news, a milestone for NSE, the Nifty 50 index hit the 25,000 mark for the first time during Thursday session, and managed to hold on to the gains. Today, it is, however, a shy below the 25,000 mark. The index hit the 20,000 mark for the first time on September 11, 2023, and took 221 trading days from that level to hit the 25,000 mark on August 1, 2024. "In a way, the last impetus came from the budget of the financial year 2024-25, and now people will be waiting for RBI interest rates declaration or the Fed interest rate declaration, so those are the kind of new triggers. And of course, India is the fastest growing large economy in the world so our own numbers on a quarter basis would also be important to note" NSE MD and CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan said yesterday, talking to reporters. "So that's where now slowly the market has realized that it's a good budget which is going to improve the growth in the economy, and that's what they are now voting with their money," he added.

On Thursday, Inox Wind Ltd (IWL) said its promoter IWEL has infused Rs 900 crore into the company, following which the wind energy solutions provider will become a <keyword id="22282357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-debt-free" source="keywords">net debt-free</keyword> company. "This fund infusion will help us become a net debt-free company, strengthening our balance sheet and help accelerate our growth. We expect substantial savings in interest expenses going ahead, aiding our profitability further," <keyword id="19951113" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kailash-tarachandani" source="keywords">Kailash Tarachandani</keyword>, CEO of Inox Wind said. The funds were raised by the IWEL on May 28, 2024, through sale of equity shares of IWL through block deals on the stock exchanges, witnessing participation of several marquee investors, as per the company statement. The funds will be utilised by Inox Wind Ltd to completely pare down its external term debt to achieve a net debt-free status, it added. Net Debt is a metric that determines how well a company can repay all of its debt it was due immediately. "Net debt free status is excluding promoter debt," Inox Wind said.

Bagga anticipates this positive sentiment to consolidate further, with a decisive upward break likely only after the election results are announced on June 4th late evening. On Friday, domestic equity benchmarks closed higher, with the Nifty 50 finishing above 22,450. The Sensex increased by 253.31 points (0.34 per cent) to close at 73,917.03, while the Nifty 50 rose 62.25 points (0.28 per cent) to 22,466.10. The Nifty 50 formed a small positive candle on the daily chart, suggesting a high wave type candle formation, indicative of a positive market sentiment as it closed above Thursday's high of 22,432. Varun Aggarwal, founder and managing director, Profit Idea, said, "The Nifty faces resistance at the 22,500 level, where significant open interest on the call side exists. A decisive break above this level is required for the index to reach its all-time high. Support is currently at 22,300, with dips viewed as buying opportunities. The index trades above its 20-day SMA and has formed a 'Piercing Line' pattern on the weekly chart, with an RSI of 62." Internationally, the markets also showed mixed trends. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 40,000 for the first time, gaining 134.21 points (0.34 per cent) to reach 40,003.59. The S&amp;P 500 edged up 6.17 points (0.12 per cent) to 5,303.27, while the Nasdaq Composite fell slightly by 12.35 points (0.07 per cent) to 16,685.97. In an official statement, NSE urged investors to exercise vigilance and rely only on verified information, sourced directly from the Exchange's official channels. The advisory highlighted that certain deceptive videos, employing sophisticated technology to mimic voice and facial expressions of Chauhan, have surfaced online, disseminating false investment advice under the guise of endorsement by the NSE. "It may be noted that NSE's employees are not authorised to recommend any stock or deal in those stocks. Additionally, NSE makes efforts requesting these platforms to take down these objectionable videos, wherever possible," said a release by the NSE. The advisory by NSE emphasized its communication protocol, affirming that all official announcements are exclusively made through its website, www.nseindia.com, and its verified social media handles.
