Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle company <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> has started to allow other automakers to use its <keyword id="15500573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-connector" source="Orion">EV connector</keyword> design. The Tesla charging connector, which combines AC charging and up to 1 mega-watt of DC in a "slim package", is the most well-known connector in North America, the company said in a blogpost. It is half the size, twice as powerful, and has no moving parts compared to Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors. "We invite charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to put the Tesla charging connector and charge port, now called the North American Charging Standard (<keyword id="887753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NACS" source="Orion">NACS</keyword>), on their equipment and vehicles," the EV maker said. "Tesla's Supercharging network has 60 per cent more NACS posts than all the CCS-equipped networks combined," it added. NACS is the common charging standard in the US. Tesla owners can expect charging at other networks without adapters as network operators already have plans in place to implement NACS at their chargers. "We look forward to future electric vehicles incorporating the NACS design and charging at Teslaa�s North American Supercharging and Destination Charging networks," Tesla said. "We are actively working with relevant standards bodies to codify Tesla's charging connector as a public standard." Tesla opens its EV connector design to other automakers

Kathmandu, Jul 6 () Three pilots and four crew members of the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) have tested positive for COVID-19, an official said on Monday. The NAC has been operating multiple numbers of international flights to bring back home Nepalis stranded in foreign countries. The infected pilots and crew members were part of the evacuation flights, MyRepublica newspaper reported. NAC spokesperson Archana Khadka confirmed the viral infection in three pilots and four crew members, the report said. Nepal has recorded a total of 15,964 coronavirus cases so far. Tesla's charging deals with GM and Ford have charging rivals scrambling to keep up

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Many car companies say their electric vehicles will be built with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla">Tesla</a> charging standard starting in 2025.</li><li>It begs the question: Why wouldn't a non-Tesla EV shopper delay their purchase until then?</li></ul>It's supposed to be a huge advantage to non-Tesla car companies that they're <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-owners-dont-worry-about-nacs-charging-deals-ford-gm-2023-7">switching to Tesla's charging tech</a>. But experts in the automotive industry say it might be just one example of why car shoppers should hold off on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-ev-fake-engine-sound-hyundai-dodge-toyota-2023-7">buying an electric vehicle</a> other than a Tesla — at least for the next two years.Ford, GM, Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, and more have said they will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-charge-non-tesla-ev-at-supercharger-models-adapters-2023-7">build their electric vehicles</a> with Tesla's North American Charging Standard, known as NACS, beginning in 2025 so their customers would have access to Tesla's Supercharger network. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-supercharger-charging-network-marketing-2023-3">network has long been one of the car company's</a> biggest strengths. If a driver currently owns one of those companies' EVs, they should be able to plug into Tesla charging sites beginning next year, so long as they have an adapter.Charging companies like Electrify America and other competitors have pledged to add NACS to their existing networks as well. (Until recently, EV makers other than Tesla have used the Combined Charging System, known as CCS.)With automakers, charging providers, and more moving to Tesla's tech, CCS will be far less common in the coming years."This is the risk at any point in time when you buy into a technology that evolves: Your technology feels out of date at best and obsolete at worst," Karl Brauer, an executive analyst at iSeeCars.com, told Insider. "Almost all the people who have EVs, except Tesla owners, are looking at futzing around with adapters for the rest of their ownership or somehow trying to pay to have a new plug system put on their car."<h2>Out of style</h2>The transition away from CCS won't happen overnight — and adapters exist — but why would a car-buyer purchase a new electric vehicle with CCS before then?For the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/used-car-buyers-pricing-inventory-average-age-vehicle-on-roads-2023-5">long average lifespan of a car</a> — not to mention what happens when these cars enter the used market — at most they have two years without NACS dominance."If you're about to spend $30, $40, $70, $100,000 and now, all the plugs on these cars except for Teslas are technically obsolete, all going to be replaced in the next one to three years with a new system," Brauer added, "now they all know that in the next year or two, you shouldn't buy a vehicle."It makes the next few years a particularly unique period in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-revolution-hits-delays-production-sales-tesla-china-2023-4">EV evolution</a>. Over the past decade or so, EV tech stayed mostly the same. The technology in EVs made in the coming decade will be more advanced and stable. But as far the period in between, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-price-cuts-hurt-early-adopters-tesla-price-war-2023-7">prices dropping</a> and the charging shift, some experts say the industry shouldn't be surprised if consumers hold off on their purchases.That could be a crisis for automakers spending billions of dollars to electrify their lineups now — especially for those with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/auto-dealerships-inventory-electric-vehicles-gas-cars-key-problems-2023-6">inventory piling up</a> in the short term. It could also cause challenges down the line: Used EVs equipped with CCS might not sell as well as those with NACS once NACS is widespread.<h2>Charging is only one part of the problem</h2>As EV tech gets better overall, including range improvements, faster and bidirectional charging, lower costs, and battery breakthroughs, buyers might wait (or go to Tesla if they feel the company's tech is more future-proof). "The charging connector is going to be perhaps a significant issue and delays some buyers pulling the trigger on a new EV," Loren McDonald, the CEO of market analysis firm EVAdoption, said. "But I think most of those buyers understand that there are six to 10 other hardware and software advancements that will make that EV better, and when you add it all up, that's maybe a more compelling reason to hold off rather than just the NACS versus CCS connector."McDonald said he anticipated purchase delays and a near-term <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-electric-car-lease-vs-purchase-buying-tips-cost-2023-2">uptick in EV leasing</a>. "The more we see these pricing fluctuations and as well as all these hardware issues, a lot of people are going to realize that leasing is maybe the better way to go," McDonald added, "because it means I can get, in essence, the new iPhone on wheels every three years and I don't have to worry about the residuals, that I have a car that's now technologically obsolete."There's this noise unlike we've ever seen before of all these future models that are going to be better, faster, cheaper, more range, et cetera," he said. Don't buy any electric car but a Tesla right now

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A flood of automakers have announced their EVs will adopt Tesla's charging tech.</li><li>But there are still two significant industry holdouts.</li></ul>It started with a drop, and then a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-charge-non-tesla-ev-at-supercharger-models-adapters-2023-7">flood of automakers announcing their vehicles would soon support Tesla's charging technology</a>, a major win for consumers and a massive vote of confidence for the plug. But even as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-charging-rivals-make-changes-after-ford-gm-deals-2023-6">companies behind a vast number of new electric vehicles announce support</a> for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ford-gm-volvo-supercharger-electric-cars-charger-network-data-2023-7">North American Charging Standard</a>, or NACS, two major holdouts remain: Volkswagen and Stellantis. Volkswagen was the world's second-largest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/toyota-defends-title-worlds-top-selling-automaker-2022-2023-01-30/">carmaker last year, holding 10% of the global light-vehicle market share</a>, while Stellantis came in fifth on the list with 7% of global share, according to S&amp;P Global Mobility.As for EVs, VW sold more than 572,000 battery electric vehicles around the world in 2022, while Stellantis hit 288,000 global electrified sales. Though both have ambitions to invest billions of dollars to boost plug-in product development and sales further over the coming years, those plans do not yet include NACS. A spokesperson for Stellantis, which is electrifying its notable Jeep lineup and more, told Insider in a statement Monday that the company had nothing new to announce. A Volkswagen spokesperson said: "Volkswagen Group and its brands are currently evaluating the implementation of the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its North American customers."Of course, other charging options exist for Stellantis and Volkswagen owners. Perhaps most notably, they can charge at home — and experts say a vast majority of EV charging can be done there (if drivers have a garage and plug available).But outside of the home is where <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-removes-last-barrier-to-electric-car-ev-ownership-2023-6">Tesla's sprawling Supercharger network</a> — over 5,500 stations with more than 51,000 plugs across the globe — really shines.In surveys and real-world tests, rivals like ChargePoint, EVgo, and Electrify America (born out of the Dieselgate emissions scam as part of Volkwagen's settlement) just haven't been able to compete, struggling with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-chargers-infrastructure-adoption-automakers-drivers-startup-2022-11">broken plugs, station downtime</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-charging-reliability-broken-stations-ev-2022-5">other frustrating problems</a>.Meanwhile, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-owners-dont-worry-about-nacs-charging-deals-ford-gm-2023-7">Tesla's network has long been an advantage for the automaker</a>. Though ChargePoint dominates in US charging overall in terms of quantity of plugs, Tesla leads in terms of number of fast-charging ports, according to consultancy <a target="_blank" href="https://evadoption.com/ev-charging-stations-statistics/us-charging-network-rankings/">EVAdoption</a>. The ability for drivers to charge quickly on road trips or in areas of the country with long stretches that are void of plugs is a major sticking point in the EV debate. The two auto giants are likely holding out given the plug wars may not have a huge effect until 2025, when most of the NACS adopters say their revamped ports will roll out on new products. (By then, many of the EVs on the road with the old charging tech, coined CCS, will also have an adapter available to use the Tesla network.) And other, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-rival-lucid-ceo-shades-nacs-charging-elon-musk-2023-7">smaller automakers, like Lucid, also aren't convinced of the benefits of NACS</a>.Still, the ability to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-charging-deal-with-ford-gives-away-biggest-advantage-2023-5">roll up at a Tesla Supercharger</a> (for the companies that switched, their drivers can access 12,000-plus Tesla plugs) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-only-ev-worth-buying-right-now-charging-nacs-ccs-2023-7">is likely to remain a massive selling point</a> as automakers look to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ev-market-share-slipping-all-depends-on-cybertruck-2023-10">unseat Elon Musk as the king of EVs</a>.It will also be key to drive <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/automakers-over-estimated-electric-vehicle-demand-early-adopters-2023-10">adoption beyond the roughly 9% it sat at in the US last month</a>.

Only 2 major car companies haven't joined Tesla's charging tech yet

Both gloves are acceptable for weights in between that range, but 10-ounce gloves are traditionally used.Mayweather and McGregor are scheduled to fight&#xa0;at 154 pounds.Sky Sports spoke with NAC executive director Bob Bennett, who said this was the first time he had seen such an appeal."This is an anomaly, Bennett told Sky Sports. "I haven't experienced this in over three years on the job. I checked with the previous executive director and our programme officer who has been here for 30 years. The German automobile giant said late Tuesday that future vehicles in its portfolio of brands, including Audi, Porsche and the group's Scout Motors -- will get the NACS charge port built-in starting in 2025 in the US, reports Morningstar. According to <keyword id="6361865" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="volkswagen" source="Orion">Volkswagen</keyword>, the agreement with Tesla would provide customers with access to more than 15,000 Tesla rapid-charging stations in North America, known as the <keyword id="2634309" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="supercharger" source="Orion">Supercharger</keyword> network. It also mentioned more than 3,800 fast-charging outlets are already available to customers through Electrify America and Electrify Canada, a joint venture of Volkswagen and Siemens. Moreover, the report noted that the companies are exploring adaptors for existing owners as well. In May 2023, Ford announced that its EV owners would soon have access to approximately 12,000 Tesla chargers, initially via an adapter. Beginning in 2025, Ford's next generation of EVs will be integrated with Tesla's charging port known as the North American Charging Standard. Since then, major automakers, including GM, Rivian, Honda, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, <keyword id="6374528" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="toyota" source="Orion">Toyota</keyword>, and, most recently, Subaru have announced plans to use Tesla's charging standard. Lucid, a lesser premium EV manufacturer, stated in November that it would use the Tesla's charging standard. Volkswagen Group to adopt Tesla's EV charging standard

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tesla has been dominating headlines as more automakers switch to its charging tech.</li><li>But Peter Rawlinson, the CEO of Tesla rival EV-maker Lucid, isn't convinced the tech is a shoo-in.</li></ul>While <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-teslas-charging-partnership-ford-and-gm-works-consumers-2023-6">automaker after automaker signs on to use Tesla's well-regarded charging technology</a>, one rival executive isn't completely sold yet. <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-30/tesla-electric-car-charging-hype-questioned-by-lucid-ceo-rawlinson-tsla-lcid?sref=LspfQlRv">Bloomberg reports</a> that Gabriel Daoud, an analyst at Cowen, referenced the Tesla charger earlier this month, saying: "It's just a plug." <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-ceo-peter-rawlinson-profile-elon-musk-tesla-2021-9">Peter Rawlinson</a>, the CEO of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-lucid-peter-rawlinson-plans-beat-tesla-elon-musk-2021-10">Lucid</a>, echoed those exact words in an interview, according to the outlet. "What we're really comparing is, is it a screw cap or is it a cork on the bottle, not the quality of the wine," <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-30/tesla-electric-car-charging-hype-questioned-by-lucid-ceo-rawlinson-tsla-lcid?sref=LspfQlRv" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rawlinson </a>told Bloomberg. "It's rather bizarre." In recent months, Ford, GM, Volvo, Rivian, and others have said they'll soon offer compatibility with Tesla's North American Charging Standard, known as NACS. But for now, the Lucid is sticking with the Combined Charging System, or CCS, that until recently, all other non-Tesla carmakers had been using or planning to use for their electric vehicles. Part of Tesla's long-time advantage has been its exclusive <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-supercharger-charging-network-marketing-2023-3">Supercharger network, which</a> many owners say is a better charging experience than the alternatives. But now, Elon Musk is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-owners-hate-waiting-to-charge-ford-gm-electric-cars-2023-6">sharing the wealth of those advantages with other EV companies</a> and working to make his way the industry standard.Lucid's Rawlinson had first-hand experience with the making of the NACS connector — then just known as the Tesla charging connector — through his previous role as chief engineer of the Model S with Musk.(Interestingly, <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/505126/elon-musk-tweet-rawlinson-not-chief-engineer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Musk has tried to claim in recent years that Rawlinson was never chief engineer at Tesla,</a> and the two reportedly aren't exactly on good terms.) Rawlinson has noted the Tesla's Supercharger network's reliability, and said Lucid will likely move to NACS eventually, according to Bloomberg. But Rawlinson is cautious about adopting the Tesla plug before it has been standardized. "If you've got the most advanced technology in the world, you're a bit reluctant to risk that," Rawlinson told Bloomberg, referring to his own company. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">REUTERSThere are all kinds of patrols around Sochi.</div></div></div>MOSCOW (Reuters) - Three Russian servicemen and four gunmen were killed in a shootout in southern Russia on Wednesday during a sweep for militants before the Sochi Winter Olympics.
Russia's National Anti-terrorism Committee (NAC) said the dead gunmen included a man accused of carrying out a car bomb attack in the city of Pyatigorsk late last year which killed three people.
Russia in on high alert following two suicide bombings in southern Russia last month that fuelled security concerns before the Olympics, which Islamist militants waging an insurgency in the North Caucasus have threatened to attack.
President Vladimir Putin has staked a lot of personal and political prestige on the success of the Games, which open on February 7, and has put security forces on combat alert in Sochi.
The NAC said in a statement that a group of militants had been trapped in a house in the village of Karlanyurt in the Dagestan region of the North Caucasus. Five officers were also wounded in what a spokesman called a special operation.
Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala, is about 620 km (385 miles) east of Sochi. The mostly Muslim region is plagued by bombings and shootings that mainly target police and state officials as part of the militants' fight to create an Islamist state.
At least 34 people were killed last month in the suicide bombings in the southern city of Volgograd. Putin ordered safety measures to be beefed up nationwide after the attacks.
About 37,000 personnel are now in place to provide security in Sochi, which is on the Black Sea and on the western edge of the Caucasus mountains, and the International Olympic Committee has expressed confidence the Games will be safe.
But, underlining the danger of attacks, security forces said on Saturday they had arrested five members of a banned militant group in southern Russia and defused a homemade bomb packed with shrapnel.
The main spokesman for Russia's Investigative Committee, whose responsibilities include looking into bombings and other attacks, appealed to civilians on Tuesday to be more vigilant and help avert the threat of "terrorist" attacks.

Russian Security Forces Battle Militants Before Olympics

But experts say that the crowds are likely to thin as more non-Tesla stations convert to Elon Musk's North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. With newfound revenue from additional users, Tesla will also have the means to expand the network even further from the roughly 20,700 plugs already in North America. The auto industry has struggled for years to agree on a standard for EV charging, and it appears Tesla is finally winning the battle. Other major <a href="https://www.engadget.com/electrify-americas-charging-network-will-support-teslas-nacs-connector-by-2025-185317197.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">charging providers like Electrify America, Blink</a>, and other big names will soon be able to accommodate Teslas. "All of this is happening because the automakers are fed up with the non-Tesla fast charging network customer experience and reliability," Loren McDonald, CEO of market analysis firm EVAdoption, told Insider. "The foundation of this, and why we're seeing more and more automakers announce that they're doing this, is because fundamentally they've realized how critical the charging experience is to your ability to sell EVs," McDonald added, "but also keep existing customers happy and retain them so that three or four years down the road, they buy another one of your EVs." Teslas have always used the NACS connectors, which is the only connector compatible with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-supercharger-charging-network-marketing-2023-3">Supercharger network</a>. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-to-bring-supercharger-network-to-rival-ford-musk-says-2023-5">Ford,</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-supercharger-general-motors-ford-ev-charging-access-network-2023-6">GM, and Rivian</a> all recently announced that their vehicles would also soon be fitted with the NACS connector, all but forcing other charging companies to adopt the standard to stay relevant.<h2>Growth trajectory</h2>The Supercharger network is already the most robust fast-charging network globally. In the the first quarter of 2023, the number stations grew 33% to 4,947 from 3,724 the year prior. The number of charging plugs grew at roughly the same rate, hitting 45,169 in March. Now, it's likely new revenue will enable Tesla to bolster the charging business even more — further assuring Tesla owners that the exclusivity of the network and charging capabilities won't be lost as others join in on the fun.<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2023/06/09/watch-cnbcs-full-interview-with-ark-invest-ceo-cathie-wood.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cathie Wood, Ark Invest CEO, told CNBC in a June interview</a> that, "What's interesting about this is it does help Tesla underwrite the charging station expense." Wood is a notorious Tesla bull, with a $2,000 price target on Tesla stock by 2027. "If you look at Tesla sales they are highly concentrated on the coasts," Wood said. "Now, it's going to make a lot more sense for Tesla to roll out charging stations that much faster throughout the country.""Tesla is smart, right? Tesla has so much data," McDonald added. "This whole concept will have been a failed exercise if all of a sudden, two years from now everybody's waiting 30 minutes at hundreds of Superchargers because of all the other automakers. I just don't think Tesla's going to allow that to happen."<h2>Infrastructure is key to EV adoption</h2>More <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-many-ev-charging-stations-in-us-study-2023-4">chargers</a>, whether from Tesla or third-party providers, will only mean more buyers. That's huge for the entire industry, experts have told Insider. It's also a big win for Tesla as the company matures from scrappy startup to mass producer of electric cars.Adding to its already robust Supercharger network would add to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-just-another-car-company-discounts-rentals-stock-2023-1">Tesla's moves into the mass market this year</a>, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ev-price-war-creating-headache-entire-auto-industry-2023-4">price slashing and more traditional incentive packages</a>. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-deliveries-production-acted-like-normal-car-company-it-worked-2023-7">Tesla's plan to act like a normal car company is working out so far</a>; it reported another record for deliveries in the second quarter.

But because the Mach-E's charger is located on the front left side of the car, the cable isn't long enough to reach and the vehicle takes up the spot to the right of the charging stall.Tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee was quick to point out the issue with the process."Did you catch it?" Brownlee wrote on X. "In Tesla's own video with a Mach E (because of the charge port location) the owner parks in the spot that's now blocking 2 spots where a Tesla would take up one. If the charge station fills up the remaining spots with Teslas, the app will show 1 charger as available but the parking spot is blocked by the Mach-E."Brownlee first spotted the issue after Tesla initially opened some of its Superchargers to non-Teslas last year. But in reality, we don't know much about how antioxidants work in the body and what health effects they might have. 
Antioxidants neutralize "free radicals" - molecules that can harm cells. In theory, that's a good thing.
But a new study, published Jan. 29 in <a href="http://stm.sciencemag.org/content/6/221/221ra15" target="_blank">Science Translational Medicine</a>, suggests that's not the whole story: Antioxidants may not protect us after all.
In fact, in some, they may be causing harm.
The researchers found that adding Vitamin E to the diets of mice with early-stage lung cancer "markedly increases tumor progression and reduces survival." 
The results were clear. And alarming.
"Their tumors accelerated in growth, became more invasive, and killed the mice twice as fast compared to mice with early lung tumors that didn't receive antioxidants," the press release explains. That effect held true with a very different antioxidant called NAC, suggesting that it's probably not just Vitamin E that's a problem - it's antioxidants in general.
It's important to underscore that while we often study disease in rodents, mice are not exactly like humans. Cancer findings cannot just be generalized from mice to people. The researchers saw similar results with human cancer cells in a petri dish, but those also behave very differently than cancer cells inside the body.
But this isn't the first study to suggest that antioxidants may increase - not decrease - cancer risk.
Taken as a whole, recent research suggests the same conclusion: Antioxidants are probably bad for people who have cancer or are at high risk for cancer. 
<h3>What's going on?</h3>
Using a mouse model, the authors show that the antioxidants inactivated the protein p53, which typically protects cells from the dangers of broken DNA. Broken strands of DNA cause mutations that can make the cell grow out of control and start to move through the body - the hallmarks of cancer. 
According to study author Per Lindahl of the University of Gothenberg, "the body has evolved a defense system which is based on the p53 protein, and that protein can sense when DNA becomes damaged. And when it senses damaged DNA, it can force the cell to cease to proliferate, to stop dividing, or even to commit suicide... Thereby, it can prevent tumors from growing or cancer from developing."
But in the presence of antioxidants, the cell's DNA is better protected against damage. As a result, the cell's natural protective process is no longer on high alert. It gets lazy, like a napping security guard, and cells with cancerous mutations start to multiply. 
<h3>What's next?</h3>
First off, it's not exactly clear how the amount of NAC and Vitamin E given to the mice equates to the amount that might be ingested by humans, though this is an important question. Figuring out how these studies might transfer to humans, and the levels needed for antioxidants to become potentially dangerous, are two important next steps. 
The study may be especially relevant to people with "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, who are often smokers with an increased risk of developing lung cancer." Frighteningly, this group often takes large quantities of NAC to relieve mucous buildup. 
One key limitation of the study, the authors write, is that it only looked at "the impact of antioxidants on tumor progression, and not tumor initiation or prevention."
The researchers also looked at lung cancer only and left open the question of whether antioxidants may well do good in people who aren't at high risk for cancer, or in protecting against other kinds of cancer. 
Still, the tide is clearly turning against previous advice that indicated antioxidants were some of our most reliable anti-cancer agents.
"The time has come to seriously ask whether antioxidant use much more likely causes than prevents cancer," Nobel Laureate James Watson cautioned in an editorial published last year in <a href="http://rsob.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/3/1/120144.full" target="_blank">Open Biology</a>.
He went on:
All in all, the by now vast number of nutritional intervention trials using the antioxidants β-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium have shown no obvious effectiveness in preventing gastrointestinal cancer nor in lengthening mortality. In fact, they seem to slightly shorten the lives of those who take them. Future data may, in fact, show that antioxidant use, particularly that of vitamin E, leads to a small number of cancers that would not have come into existence but for antioxidant supplementation. Blueberries best be eaten because they taste good, not because their consumption will lead to less cancer.
