<br /> US-based technology giant <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> has launched a new image recognition app that looks at photos of <keyword id="32596" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dogs">dogs</keyword> to identify its breed or at least tell the percentage of the closest match in case it cannot make an exact match.<br />
<br /> <keyword id="137107" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="fetch">Fetch</keyword> -- an <keyword id="387358" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="iPhone-app">iPhone app</keyword> -- is the latest in a series of fun projects that are meant to highlight machine learning's potential.<br />
<br /> The app uses a machine learning <keyword id="6358815" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="tech">tech</keyword>nique called deep neural networks, the technology website Tech Crunch reported.<br />

"There is very advanced work underway at Microsoft in this area, which are able to take apart subtle differences, even when breeds look similar or through the many different colors within breeds," Mitch Goldberg, development director at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, Britain-based team which built the app, was quoted as saying.<br />

"Every time we add more, that's the beauty of the deep neural network in understanding new, unique breeds. This is a really complex problem," Goldberg added.<br />

To use the app, you simply show it a picture of a dog and it returns with the name of the breed. If there is no dog in the photo, the app says: "No dogs found!"<br />

Last year, Microsoft launched a website that would guess people's ages from their photos. However, the results were a hit or miss because the results depended on the many factors of the picture such as framing and lightening in the picture.<br />
<br /> Similarly, the company released <keyword id="3244273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MyMoustache-app">MyMoustache app</keyword> to recognize and rate facial hair. <br />

Fetch, Microsoft's new app can identify your dog's breed

It's called Mimicker and, at first glance, <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/microsoft-mimicker-alarm-clock-for-android-2016-1">it looks silly</a>: It's an Android-only alarm clock that requires you perform tricks, such as smiling into the camera or pointing the phone at a random object around the house, to switch it off.</p><p>However, apps like Mimicker are part of a bigger plan by Microsoft to lure the best and the brightest into the company to work on a hot new trend: artificial intelligence.</p><p>While the world sees a goofy alarm clock, anyone who works in artificial intelligence understands what the app really is: an example of how a computer can learn to understand the world around it.</p><p>"Mimicker Alarm was built to showcase the power and flexibility of Microsoft Project Oxford, a platform of artificial intelligence APIs," <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/garage/#app-mimicker-alarm">the app description reads</a>, highlighting the true purpose of the free Android app.</p><p>Microsoft has been releasing a steady stream of these kind of apps, all of which are built by Microsoft Garage, an "<a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/garage/#garage-overview">outlet for experimental projects</a>."</p><p>Here are <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/garage/#garage-workbench">a few of the apps</a>:</p><ul><li><a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/garage/#app-arrow">Arrow</a>: A "skin" for Android that "learns from you," according to the description. "The more you use it, the better it gets."</li><li><a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/garage/#app-mymoustache">MyMoustache.net</a>: A silly tool that detects, and measures, the size of moustaches. According to Microsoft, "MyMoustache.net is the latest machine learning-powered game built using Microsoft Project Oxford Face API."</li><li><a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/garage/#app-autoTag-n-search">AutoTag</a>: An app that finds, and tags, your friends on Facebook using AI.</li><li><a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/garage/#app-photo-story">Photo Story</a>: The app collects images and, using computer intelligence, can create a story.</li><li><a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/garage/#app-torque">Torque</a>: According to the app description the app is "powered by Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence technologies" and lets the user "quickly shake your Android phone to voice search the web," among other things.</li></ul><p>Behind these fun apps, Microsoft is pursuing a more serious mission: To get the attention of people who are working on artificial intelligence, people whom it will need to recruit.</p><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/vsearch/j?keywords=artificial%20intelligence&amp;company=Microsoft&amp;openAdvancedForm=true&amp;locationType=I&amp;countryCode=gb&amp;rsid=2028421201453461323787&amp;orig=MDYS">According to LinkedIn</a>, Microsoft is advertising a number of roles related to artificial intelligence and machine learning in the US and <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>. One description for a role in the US <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/jobs2/view/97664647?trk=vsrp_jobs_res_name&amp;trkInfo=VSRPsearchId%3A2028421201453464447066%2CVSRPtargetId%3A97664647%2CVSRPcmpt%3Aprimary">asks for a candidate who is</a> "interested in designing and implementing machine learning algorithms that get used by millions of users."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-enable-and-disable-cortana-in-windows-10/">Greg Mombert/Digital Trends</a></span></p><p class="caption">Cortana running on Windows 10.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"Microsoft is a pretty serious business with clearly a lot going on in the AI and machine learning space," said <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/azhar">Azeem Azhar</a>, an AI expert, in an email to Business Insider. As examples, Azhar cited Cortana and Xiaoice, a Chinese-based AI experiment which, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/people-in-china-love-microsoft-xiaoice-little-bing-2015-11">according to Microsoft</a>, some users have fallen in love with.</p><p>"On the research side, a Microsoft team recently blew away the competition in Imagenet, the global machine vision contest," he said. The team did this by "applying a very extensive deep-learning network" to the problem, he said.</p><p>"[Microsoft's] wide consumer distribution through operating systems and web properties affords lots of opportunity to make a significant difference," he added.</p><p>Microsoft Research, the research-focused arm of the company that employs around 1,000 people globally, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/microsoft-research-16-predictions-for-2016-2015-12">published its list of predictions for 2016</a> and more than one talked about AI. "In the future, computers will see, hear, speak, and even understand," said Patrice Simard, an engineer and deputy managing director at Microsoft Research, <a href="http://fortune.com/2015/09/14/technology-artificial-intelligence/">in an interview with Fortune about AI</a>. Office Delve, bundled with Office 2016, uses machine learning to surface the information - emails, contacts, or calendar events - that are important right now, for example.</p><p>Cortana, the virtual assistant, is arguably Microsoft's leading AI and machine learning experiment and is being featured prominently in Windows 10, which now has over 200 million users.</p><p>Microsoft has described Cortana as "<a href="https://news.microsoft.com/stories/people/cortana.html">the smartest AI in the universe</a>" before touting its human-like credentials. Microsoft's new apps may seem silly - but they're part of a much bigger plan

Many hallway jokes, brainstorming sessions, and mockups later, our early ideas have been realized far beyond our initial expectations," <a href="https://www.mymoustache.net/themagic">writes Microsoft on "the magic" behind the MyMoustache.net website</a>.</span></p><p>Supposedly, the app learns over time from the data everyone uploads, improving and becoming more accurate as more people use it. You have to opt in to letting Microsoft use your photo "for science."</p><p>But it's possible to baffle MyMoustache.net. Microsoft's new site rates your moustache for charity - it's a lot of fun to play around with

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>As frustrated as you might get that voice-controlled tools like Apple Siri and Microsoft Cortana don't always understand you, it used to be a lot worse.<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/where-is-google-taking-us-2015-7">Earlier this year</a>, Google announced it had gotten its speech recognition error rate down to 8%.&#xa0;</p><p>But Microsoft Distinguihsed Engineer and Chief Scientist of Speech Xuedong Huang says that it's a vast improvement.</p><p>When Microsoft made its first-ever speech recognition technology available alongside Windows 95, a project Huang headed up, the error rate was "almost 100%," he says.</p><p>If you chart it out, Huang says, that means that on average, speech recognition has gotten 20% better every single year for the last twenty years. Which means that the end is in sight.</p><p>"In the next four to five years, computers will be as good as humans" at understanding the words that come out of your mouth, Huang says.</p><p>But for Huang, Microsoft, and the tech world in general, the end of this road is the beginning of the next phase: building real artificial intelligence.&#xa0;</p><h2>"Invisible revolution"</h2><p>With "total parity" between human and computer&#xa0;understanding on the visible horizon, Huang says, it means that the world of speech science has a firmer foundation on which to work on giving computers&#xa0;actual artificial intelligence.</p><p>"To understand a word is easier than understanding the context," Huang says.&#xa0;</p><p>But with tools like Microsoft Cortana, Google Now, Apple Siri, and Amazon Alexa, we have consumer-facing apps that are slowly but surely getting better at figuring out not only what you said&#xa0;- but also what you meant. It means that you can start to have more complex conversations with your gadgets.</p><p>This means that we're on the cusp of an "invisible revolution," Huang says, as speech becomes an accepted and useful interface for computers, and artificial intelligence becomes a reality.</p><p>It's something that's been a long time coming for Microsoft. Witness&#xa0;Bill Gates demonstrate the Microsoft MiPad (seriously), a device running prototype voice recognition software created by Huang's team, at the 2001 Consumer Electronics Show:</p><p><div></div></p><p>The MiPad never came to market. But the world of speech technology marches on.</p><h2>The world of tomorrow</h2><p class="embed-spacer">Huang is heavily involved with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-project-oxford-can-see-when-youre-happy-2015-11">Project Oxford</a>, the company's set of machine learning tools for image and speech recognition. If you used fun Microsoft sites like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-built-a-site-to-guess-how-old-you-are-2015-4">How-Old.net</a> or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-rates-your-mustache-2015-11">MyMoustache</a>, you've gotten some hands-on experience with what it can do.&#xa0;</p><p>Project Oxford is available to developers everywhere, meaning developers can put the&#xa0;technology in their own apps.&#xa0;</p><p>And just as Microsoft Cortana can listen to your spoken questions and give smart answers, Project Oxford lets developers of consumer apps, business software, and everything in between build&#xa0;technology with whom&#xa0;you can hold a decent conversation.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>It means the rise of one interface&#xa0;- speech&#xa0;- that can control every kind of device, anywhere in a home. And with Microsoft Project Oxford, and the Microsoft Azure cloud that underpins it, Huang says Microsoft is in a great position to be at the center of the revolution.</p><p>"It took us 20 years to reach that goal," Huang says.</p><p>Even as Microsoft works on AI, the company has already started to look ahead to what's next, Huang says.</p><p>Indeed, he says that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-microsoft-xbox-kinect-didnt-take-off-2015-9">Xbox Kinect sensor</a>, which let people control Xbox video games with voice and motion, was actually born of Microsoft Research's first cracks at building systems that could understand both speech and gestures to discern meaning.&#xa0;</p><p>Eventually, this will just be a new normal, Huang believes.
