<ul><li>The local services on the network of Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) -- the city's lifeline -- is specifically for the employees of the <keyword id="13126" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> government who are engaged in essential services.</li><li>This follows repeated appeals by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to the Centre for resumption of services as part of the unlocking process post COVID-19 lockdown. </li></ul> After a gap of over two-and-a-half months, the Railways resumed limited suburban train services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) on Monday morning, officials said. The local services on the network of Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) -- the city's lifeline -- is specifically for the employees of the Maharashtra government who are engaged in essential services. This follows repeated appeals by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to the Centre for resumption of services as part of the unlocking process post COVID-19 lockdown. Accordingly, the familiar sight and sounds of the suburban trains greeted Mumbaikars since early morning as the CR and WR together started 450 services, according to officials. The WR will run 60 pairs of its 12 car suburban services -- total 120 -- in both directions between <keyword id="74906" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Churchgate">Churchgate</keyword> and <keyword id="1077401" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dahanu-Road">Dahanu Road</keyword>, according to WR spokesperson <keyword id="3465642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravindra-Bhakar">Ravindra Bhakar</keyword>. The CR will run 100 services on either side on its Main line -- between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Thane, Kalyan, Karjat and Kasara and 70 services on either side of Harbour line -- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Panvel, said CR spokesperson Shivaji Sutar. "These trains will run between 05.30 hrs to 23.30 hrs", said a CR-WR joint statement early Monday. "It is requested not to rush to the stations and follow medical and social protocols as mandated for CoVID-19," the CR-WR joint statement said.

Mumbai local trains resume services partially

Mumbai, Jun 15 () Even as Indian Railways has resumed select local train services in Mumbai to ferry those providing essential services, <keyword id="6477319" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-employees">bank employees</keyword> are not being allowed to use the service to commute, <keyword id="6355272" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank">bank</keyword> unions said. Banks are declared as the essential service provider by the Ministry of Home Affairs, and have been providing uninterrupted banking services since the first lockdown announced on March 23. Western Railway and Central Railway are running selected suburban train services only for essential services as identified by the state government. "Since the railway authorities have started local trains for the employees from essential service but bank employees have been denied using that service as they are not in the list of essential services," Union Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) Maharashtra Convenor Devidas Tujapurkar said. "On the one side, the government expects banks to extend uninterrupted services even during the lockdown but when it comes to using local train services, banks are not considered in the list of essential service providers, which is disturbing," he added. Central Railway said that around 1.25 lakh essential staff (including 50,000 on Western Railway) as identified by the state government are expected to travel by these trains. While speaking to , an employee of Syndicate Bank said, "I tried to enter Dadar station in the morning to travel to my branch in Churchgate but police did not allow me." Railways has also appealed to the public that only the essential staff as identified by the state government will be permitted to travel by selected suburban services and requested others not to rush to the stations. In a letter written to the chief secretary, Maharashtra government, Maharashtra State Bank Employees Federation (MSBEF) have requested to allow bank employees to use the suburban train services. "We earnestly request you to please extend this service to the bank employees to enable them to report to their duties regularly.
