A Special Terrorism And Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (<keyword id="6446612" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="TADA">TADA</keyword>) Court has found deported mafia don <keyword id="29205" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="abu-salem">Abu Salem</keyword> guilty in the March 1993 Mumbai serials blasts which claimed 257 lives. <keyword id="6357470" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Salem">Salem</keyword>, who was extradited from <keyword id="6359079" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Portugal">Portugal</keyword> in 2005, was charged with supplying the arms and ammunition, including the deadly RDX, which were used in the blasts. Besides Salem, four others have also been found guilty under various charges in the same case, as the <keyword id="121350" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="special-court">Special Court</keyword> delivers its verdict on Friday. Mustafa Dossa, Abu Salem, Feroz Abdul Rashid Khan, Taher Merchant, Riyaz Siddiqui, Abdul Qayyum Shaikh and <keyword id="1238651" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Karimullah-Khan">Karimullah Khan</keyword> face multiple charges including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Government of India and murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA).

Abu Salem and 4 others convicted in 1993 Mumbai blast case that killed 257; sentence awaited

Few weeks are left for actor <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword>’s release from Pune’s Yerwada jail, where he is serving sentence after he was convicted in 1993 Mumbai blasts case, and legal experts are expecting some sort of a rebound in legal discourse surrounding such cases. 
 
Dutt, who was out on prolonged furloughs during the time he served his sentence in prison from May 2013, will make his way out of the jail for once and for all on February 25 this year. The reason for his release, seven months before the five-year sentence, is cited as ‘good behaviour’ in the jail. 
 
The first course of action has already started rolling out. One of the convicts in former PM Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Perarivalan, has sought to know the grounds of Dutt’s release. He was serving reminiscent prison sentence of 42 months from the time he went behind bars amidst much drama surrounding his return to prison when the sentence was commuted. 
 
Perarivalan has used the Right to Information Act, one of the most democratic weapons Indians have against the lagging administrative and judicial system. Perarivalan is currently lodged in Vellore Central Prison. 
 
Activists are already building arguments around Dutt’s impending release saying ‘good conduct’ is not a ground for release under serious cases such as TADA under which Dutt was jailed. 
 
Though the proposal granting his remittance is yet to be cleared by the Maharashtra government, speculations are rife that the proposal would be given ‘due’ importance and a certain amount of surety will be demanded from Dutt. 
 
An activist Pradeep Bhalekar has filed a PIL in Bombay High Court questioning this step taken by the authorities in Dutt’s case which would send ‘wrong’ message to the society. 
 
Bhalekar claims there are nearly 27,740 prisoners who have been jailed across the state under charges that are lighter than that the actor faces. If they cannot be freed, how was Dutt’s case considered to be above them, and above the law which is deemed to be equal for all? 
 
This would also send somewhat a mixed message to the convicts of various crimes that no matter how serious the crime is, one can supersede the law using the same contexts that set the stage for their arrest and conviction. 
 
Meanwhile, Bollywood awaits its Munna Bhai with great anticipation. New scripts, new releases and new stories will hit the screen, adding excitement and some great economy to the biggest employer of this nation—the Bollywood. 
 
The next series of Munna Bhai, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is being planned coinciding with days when the actor turns a free bird. 
 
Bollywood has been in the centre of storm over legalities owing to the huge economical margins they set in motion with their presence on the screen. Their on-screen persona should not influence their off-screen activities, which are sometimes more than questionable. 
 
For instance, when Bollywood actor Salman Khan, considered to be a mega force in the industry, was granted bail soon after his conviction in hit-and-run case, the reaction on social media and the celebration that followed showed societal emotions override all legal modalities when it comes to heroes who are demigods in the country since a long time. 
 
Dutt’s release before time will surely send a mixed bag of signals to the society on this front. On the other hand, should a man/actor/celebrity be dealt more sternly than required just because of his personality being in the public eye? This is another question that would haunt the society in some ways, which would disturb the equilibrium of the law as well. 
 
Should Dutt complete the sentence, foregoing all the privileges that have been granted by the law to all citizens? What would then be the incentive for a convicted person to go on the path of reformation and regret should he be kept out from this provision? 
 
It is a well established fact that while Dutt serves his sentence in the prison, has always maintained good relations with his fellow prison mates and has show exemplary behavior that can set the stage for a lot of people to emulate his conduct while they bow before the verdict of law. 
With that, the question remains. Should he, or shouldn’t he be released?

Sanjay Dutt’s impending release may have repercussions

<keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> actor <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword> who’s serving five-year sentence at the Yerawada central prison in Pune for illegal possession and destruction of an AK-56 rifle in 1993 serial blasts case, will be released on February 25. 
 
The actor will be released on February 25, 103 days ahead of the official end of his prison term on the grounds of 'good conduct', a senior official said here today. 
 Dutt, who was convicted in the <keyword id="69397" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="1993-Mumbai-blasts">1993 Mumbai blasts</keyword> case for possessing illegal weapons and sentenced to five years in jail, had already served 18 months before the verdict was pronounced. 
 
The actor is serving 42 months of his remaining jail term, after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction in 2013. 
 
After being granted a 14-day furlough in December 2014, he was expected to report back to jail on January 7 but sought an extension of furlough from jail authorities. The jail authorities, however, informed Dutt about it being rejected only on January 9. 
 
Dutt was given a clean chit for this delay, after an inquiry into the matter. The Home department had served a memo to two officials from the Yerwada central prison for the delay in making a decision.

In an interview, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Minister+of+state+for+Information+and+Broadcasting+">Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore</a> said all means — "saam, daam, dand, bhed" (all options from force to stealth) would be used to counter India's enemies.” 
 "India's enemies should not rest in peace. They should know every moment the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> is thinking of ways of acting against them," Rathore said. 
 
On being asked whether the government would use covert tactics or special operations, Rathore said: "These things are not discussed on TV. Once the action has been taken then you will get to know about it." 
 
He added that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Modi+government+">Modi government</a> would not keep exchanging dossiers with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan+">Pakistan</a> on Dawood.  The Bombay bombings were a series of 13 bomb explosions that happened on 12 March 1993. The single-day attacks resulted in over 350 fatalities and 1,200 injuries. It was coordinated by <keyword id="6357714" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dawood-Ibrahim">Dawood Ibrahim</keyword>, don of the Mumbai-based international organised crime syndicate named D-Company.

Indian government wants Dawood Ibrahim at any cost!

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=yakub+memon">Yakub Memon</a>, who was hanged in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nagpur+jail">Nagpur jail</a> on Thursday, was buried alongside his father’s tomb. 
 
His body was handed over to his family members in Mumbai. 
 
Memon, 1993 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mumbai+blasts">Mumbai blasts</a> convict, was hanged at 6.35 am after the Supreme Court dismissed his curative petition and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=pranab+mukherjee">President Pranab Mukherjee</a> rejected his mercy petition on July 29. 
 
Hours before his hanging, Memon offered namaz and read the holy Quran and was provided with a fresh set of clothes. 
 
Nagpur’s Chief judicial magistrate M M Deshpande was present and she read out the operating part of the TADA court order which awarded capital punishment to Memon before he was made to stand on a stool and the lever pulled by the hangman. 
 
A team of doctors declared him dead and a post-mortem was conducted by a team from a Nagpur hospital. 
 
Ironically, Memon, who was a chartered accountant by profession, was hanged on his birthday. He turned 53 today. 
 
He had reacted with an angry outburst saying "innocent people are being called terrorists" when a TADA court here had pronounced him guilty on September 12, 2006. 
 
After hearing the verdict, he had said, "We do not want to engage lawyers to argue on quantum of sentence...13 years have passed and innocent people are being called terrorists." 
 
Blasts in Mumbai, then known as Bombay, in 1993 had killed 257 people and Memon was convicted as the "driving spirit" behind the serial blasts in India's financial capital.

Yakub Memon buried with Islamic rites

Days after the nation celebrated its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=independence+day">69th Independence Day</a> and the national capital was beefed-up with security personals, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi+police">Delhi police</a> has now received an email talking about a bomb attack on the <keyword id="75952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court-of-India">Supreme Court of India</keyword>. 
 The <keyword id="6358992" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Police">Delhi police</keyword> has received an email threatening a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bomb+attack+">bomb attack </a>on the apex court days after a death threat was made against the apex court’s judge Justice <keyword id="6355251" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dipak-Misra">Dipak Misra</keyword>. 
 
The email was received on Monday following which the security inside and around the premises has been tightened up. The highest court of India is located at Tilak Marg in Delhi. 
 
Incidentally, Justice Misra is one of the three Supreme Court judges who turned down the final plea against hanging of 1993 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mumbai+blasts+">Mumbai blasts </a>convict <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Yakub+Memon">Yakub Memon</a>. 
 
Police said the mail first landed in the inbox of a person, whose identity was not disclosed, who forwarded it to them. 
 
As per a police officer, the mail has been forwarded to a special cell.

Yakub Memon: Hanged on the day he was born

The Indian government has advised President Pranab Mukherjee to reject Mumbai serial blasts convict <keyword id="383370" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yakub-Memon">Yakub Memon</keyword>’s mercy petition. 
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Secretary L C Goyal and a few other top official gathered at the PM’s residence, and came to the conclusion that the president should reject Memon’s plea. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=yakub+memon">Yakub Memon</a>, 1993 Mumbai blasts convict, is set be hanged after the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Wednesday rejected his curative petition and dismissed all the contention raised by him. 
 Special Public Prosecutor <keyword id="73359" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ujjwal-Nikam">Ujjwal Nikam</keyword> informed that the apex court said that the curative petition was rightly dismissed. 
 
“SC has clearly held that death warrant issued to Yakub is legal and valid,” said Nikam. 
 
Memon will be hanged on July 30 at 7am at Nagpur jail. He had filed mercy petitions with with Maharashtra Governor and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=pranab+mukherjee">President Pranab Mukherjee</a> also. 
 
However, Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao also rejected his mercy petition. Now, all eyes are set on Mukherjee, whose final decision would be binding. 
 
“There is no hurdle in the way of execution now,” said senior lawyer, KTS Tulsi. 
 
Memon had claimed he was suffering from schizophrenia since 1996 and has remained behind bars for nearly 20 years. 
 
He sought commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment. 
 
A series of blasts had rocked Mumbai on March 12, 1993, leaving 257 dead and over 700 injured.

Government advises President to reject Yakub Memon's plea

Ahead of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=independence+day">Independence Day</a>, the government has issued a detailed advisory, directing states and Union Territories to beef up the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=security">security</a>. 
 
The seven-page advisory, which is little different from every year, has details keeping in mind the execution of Mumbai blasts convict <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=yakub+memon">Yakub Memon</a>, who was hanged on July 30. 
 
The government has mentioned the possibility of attacks by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan+terror+groups">Pakistan-sponsored terror groups</a>. 
 
It states specific security threats including a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=lashkar">Lashker-e-Taiba</a> (LeT plan to hijack or blow up an Air India flight on the Kabul-Delhi-Kabul sector and <keyword id="44984" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Al-Qaeda">al-Qaeda</keyword>'s designs to hit Indian naval facilities including the Karwar <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=india+navy">naval base</a> (INS Kadamba), the Southern Naval Command in Kochi (INS Venduruthy) and Mumbai-based Western Naval Command. 
 "<keyword id="28240" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Independence-day">Independence Day</keyword> function ... provides an attractive target for various militant, terrorist outfits ... and rabid communal elements due to high publicity value and concentrated presence of dignitaries," the advisory stated. 
 
Security has been beefed up at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP">BJP</a> offices, commercial, aviation, tourist and railway facilities, as the advisory highlighted al-Qaida's plans to target these places. 
 
The Independence Day alert cites the continuous flow of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=intelligence+input">intelligence inputs</a> regarding specific threat of terror attacks by LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammad and even <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=al+qaeda">al-Qaeda</a>. 
 
It points out a LeT plot to target Mumbai or Gujarat around September or October, while a March alert speaks of possible fidayeen attacks in Delhi and J&amp;K. 
 
In view of the terror threats, the security agencies have asked the forces and state police to maintain "strict access control and anti-sabotage checks" besides intensifying patrolling and keeping strict vigil at railway stations and tracks, bus stands, airports and entry points.

Sources privy to the development told PTI that the Indian side could also bring up <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/10-worst-terrorist-attacks-to-rock-India/articleshow/48237865.cms">terror cases</a> related to wanted gangster and mastermind of 1993 Mumbai blasts <keyword id="6357714" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dawood-Ibrahim">Dawood Ibrahim</keyword> during the meeting, which was agreed to at the meeting Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> and his Pakistani counterpart <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> in <keyword id="271311" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ufa">Ufa</keyword> in Russia last month. 
 
"Everything will be on table. The agencies are collecting evidence in the case of the Gurdaspur terror attack. The soil samples found in the boots of the three killed terrorists have been sent for investigation," they said. 
 
Sources added the evidence in connection with the Gurdaspur attack is still being collected and collated by the agencies to prepare "solid proof" to prove the cross-border conspiracy that killed seven persons--three civilians, Superintendent of Police (Detective), Baljit Singh, a Punjab provincial service officer and three home guards. 
 They said a dossier will also be prepared and handed over to the other side during the meeting, like the Indian case against 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind and <keyword id="41305" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="LeT">LeT</keyword> commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi who is now out on bail. 
 Similar proof against terror mastermind <keyword id="44106" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hafiz-Saeed">Hafiz Saeed</keyword>, who India has time and again said has been roaming freely in the neighbouring country, will be shared with Pakistan across the table, they said. 
 
They said all other matters pertaining to cross-border terror cases would be brought on the table, backed by "water-tight" evidence. 
 
The sources, however, said a firm proposal and agenda for the talks, proposed by India between August 23-24, has not been prepared. 
 
Despite the two Premiers agreeing to re-start talks on bilateral issues during their meeting in Ufa, the recent Gurdaspur terror attack and a spate of ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the border has escalated tension between the two countries.

Mehjabeen Shaikh, Dawood Ibrahim's wife, inadvertantly let slip to an Indian TV channel that the gangster was indeed living in <keyword id="6587" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="karachi">Karachi</keyword>, peacefully though the Pakistani government had repeatedly denied reports of sheltering him

	"He's sleeping," Shaikh said before hanging up.
 

	By the time a second reporter called the number, another woman who answered the phone was cautious and asked her to call back later without confirming if it was the residence of Dawood.
 

	Pakistan has repeatedly denied that it has sheltered the underworld don, wanted in India for orchestrating the 1993 bomb blasts that killed 257 people in Mumbai. Even in May this year, Pakistan High Commissioner, Abdul Basit, said the dreaded gangster "was not in Pakistan", when Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh told Parliament that India knew about Dawood's whereabouts.
 

	Times Now reported that according to details of bills available with Indian security agencies, the phone was installed in 2006.
 

	An exclusive report in the Hindustan Times today exposed several discrepancies in the Pakistani narrative.
 

	The HT report, quoting intelligence inputs, stated that Dawood, his wife Mehjabeen Shaikh, son Moeen Nawaz and daughters Mahrukh, Mehreen and Mazia are living in the upscale Clifton neighborhood of Pakistan's Karachi. Dawood's daughter Mahrukh is married to Junaid, son of former Pakistan cricket captain Javed Miandad.
 

	Indian intelligence agencies have an April 2015 telephone bill in the name of Dawood's wife Mehjabeen with D-13, Block-4, Karachi Development Authority, Sch-5, Clifton, as the address, according to the report. Dawood has three Pakistani passports and two more residential addresses in Karachi.
 

	Dawood's family members have travelled to Dubai in January this year. According to the image that HT published of Dawood's Pakistani passport photo, the 59-year-old crime syndicate chief is now cleanshaven, has a receding hairline and has not had plastic surgery done on his face.
 

	Sleuths also have his passport numbers, flight and passenger details.
 

	"Pakistan's Dawood lie is also nailed from the fact that the mafia don's close associates like Jabir Saddiq, Jawaid Chotani and Mumbai blasts accused Javed Patel a.k.a Chikna are also based in Pakistan and are frequent visitors to Dubai. There are flight details to show that Saddiq travelled to Dubai from Karachi on July 20, 2015 and returned four days later," Shishir Gupta wrote in the report for HT.
 Now, if they meet on Monday, Indian <keyword id="43858" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Security-Advisor">National Security Advisor</keyword> <keyword id="115253" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ajit-Doval">Ajit Doval</keyword> will confront his counterpart <keyword id="1679706" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sartaj-Aziz">Sartaj Aziz</keyword> with the documentary evidence, the report said.

Twenty two years since perpetrating one of India’s deadliest terrorist attacks, leading to the death of close to 300 people after a series of bomb blasts rocked India’s finacial capital, Mumbai, Tiger ranks as one of the most wanted criminals in Mumbai Police’s diary. 
 
Though there has been no direct connection with the police, phone calls tapped at Memon’s family residence in Mumbai informs that Tiger may be planning on taking revenge for his brother, Yakub’s hanging on 30th July. 
 
According to a leaked copy of the transcript of the purported conversation, between Tiger and his mother, on the morning Yakub was hanged at a jail in Nagpur, the conversation holds a sinister tone enougg to make the Mumbai Police go scurrying. 
 
 
 
Tiger made the call to his mother at 5:30 am in the morning, barely an hour before Yakub was to be hanged. His mother wasn’t in the state of conversing with his son when her other son was awaiting to face the gallows. The conversation shows that Tiger who has never repented for the blast in Mumbai that killed hundreds is not grieving for his brother’s impending fate, rather talks of revenge, to which his mother didn’t approve of. 
 
The officials from security agencies in Mumbai and Delhi have confirmed the call from Tiger. Tiger Memon and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim were the key conspirators behind the Mumbai blasts. The coordinated attacks across 13 locations in the city on March 12, 1993, claimed 257 lives. 
 
Here is the complete transcript of the conversation between Tiger Memon and his mothe: 
 
Landline phone at Memon’s Mumbai residence rings. 
 
An unidentified man (UM) from the Memon residence picks up the phone. The caller doesn't identify himself but quickly says, " Salam walikum, Hello" 
 
The unidentified male (UM) then replies: Walikum salam Bhai. 
 
Tiger: Ammi Jaggi hai kya. (Is mother awake) 
 
UM: Woh raat bhar soyi nahi hai. (She hasn't slept since last night) 
 
Tiger: Baat karao ( I want to speak to her) 
 
There is a pause of around 30 seconds as the cordless phone is being taken inside to the room where the mother is. While going to the room UM meets someone else who asks who is on the line, UM carrying the phone says, 'Bhaijaan ka phone hai,'. 
 
The Unidentified Male enters a room and tells his mother: "Bhaijaan baat karenge," He repeats it again: "Bhaijaan baat karenge." 
 
There is some murmuring which is not audible. Hanifa apparently doesn't want to talk to Tiger. So the UM insists, "Tum baat to karo." 
 
Hanifa Memon, the mother of Tiger Memon then takes the phone, there are a few moments of silence. In a feeble voice she says something to Tiger that is inaudible. 
 
Tiger: "Salam walikum Ammi khairiyat." 
 
In a feeble voice she says something the voice is inaudible. 
 
Tiger says: "Salam walikum ammi khairiyat?" 
 
Hearing this- the mother Hanifa starts crying. There is a pause for 35 seconds as she sobs. 
 
Tiger then says: "Zulm ki inteha ho gayi hai. Zaya nahi jayega," (This is the height of injustice, this will not go waste.) And repeats it one more time: "Yeh sab zaya nahi jayega," 
 
Yakub's mother starts sobbing more on the phone now. 
 
So Tiger promises: "Tum ro mat ammi iska inko izafa dena hoga." 
 
Hanfia says something which is inaudible- 
 
Tiger: "main unko chukwaonga" (I will make them pay) 
 
Tiger's mother says in a feeble voice: "Bas ho gaya, Pehle ke vajah se mera Yakub gaya ab aur nahin main dekh sakti. 
 
main nahi dekh sakti 
 
main nahi dekh sakti" 
 
And begins to cry again. 
 
The UM who answered the phone initially then takes the phone again from the mother and says: "Bhai..." 
 
Tiger says: "usko sambhalo, sabko sambhalo" 
 
UM replies: "Woh abhi baat nahi karengi woh ro rahi hai. sab ro rahe hain." 
 
Tiger: "Sabke asoo zaya nahi jayenge" (Everyone's tears will not go waste) 
 
"Sabka khayal rakho" (Take care of everyone) 
 
UM: "Dua pado bhai" (Recite some prayers) 
 
The phone gets disconnected then. The call made from a VOIP connection was bouncing from one Internet Protocol address to another, so the trace was not completed.

<keyword id="3119826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Award-Wapsi">Award Wapsi</keyword> This must have been the most significant event of the year and happened right before the <keyword id="175111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar-elections">Bihar elections</keyword>. Award wapsi, a movement of sorts, was started a little while after murder of rationalist thinker and writer M M Kalburgi in Karnataka. Writers Nayantara Sehgal and Uday Prakash were among those who set the tone. This year, the biggest literary event was not a book release or something, but more like a writer standing up for his right to speak what he sees as truth. The writers were chided for siding with Congress party since most of them received awards during the tenure of Congress government. 
 
National Herald case 
Apart from Award Wapsi, this was another headline grabber which almost made demi gods out of Congress first line leaders. AICC Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi made an appearance in court over murky National Herald assets usurping case, which cost the country quite dearly since Congress stalled the discussions over some crucial issues such as GST in parliament, over ‘vendetta’ politics. 
 
Modi Pakistan-Afghan visit 
Towards the end of the year, the Prime Minister who has been jocularly targeted for his trips aboard sprang up a surprise and visited his counterpart in Pakistan absolutely out of turn, thus catching everyone by surprise. His move was both appreciated and criticized in equal measures by those who love him, and by those who simply didn’t like this approach. But, it looks like the White House seems to have welcomed this new found bonhomie between neighbours who have been sworn enemies over several issues. 
 
Shah Rukh, Aamir Khan’s (controversial) intolerance remarks 
This year when people spoke of social and cultural differences, they were targeted on social media and how! Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan who spoke against the rising incidents of ‘intolerance’ and the subsequent fear that has been the result of this, they were targeted badly for everything they said and did. Many from Bollywood including Raveena Tandon, Madhur Bhandarkar and Anupam Kher condemned these remarks made by the two Khans. The issue still simmers on. 
 
No women in temples, so what! 
It started with Ayyappan temple in Sabarimala, Kerala where a trustee said they would put scanners soon to keep menstruating women from visiting temples and angering the gods. Soon after, BJP leader Pankaja Munde in Mumbai seemed to have agreed with this line of thought. She asked, in all calm tone, yes women have not been allowed to visit temples in particular days. So what?! This irked feminists and people across the social media, who ensured their spoke their minds against this medieval stance against menstruating women. 
 
Meat ban during Paryushan Parva 
The BJP government in Maharashtra banned meat during the Jain fasting period called Paryushan Parva. This angered people from across social strata, who were sure that the BJP was driving a wedge between communities that ate meat and those that didn’t consume meat. This was called a social experiment of the worst kind, which would have repercussions on people’s food habits where forced opinions would mean democracy had ceased to exist even in people food habits. 
 
Sadhvi Prachi 
In keeping with the continued tradition of letting lose a volley of abuses and irrational statements, asking people to go to Pakistan if they were opposed to the ideologies of BJP government which predominantly upheld Hindu values and the way of life, that an alternate faith was next to impossible. Sadhvi Prachi being just a representative of all those medieval thoughts and barbaric mindset, kept the newspapers busy with her idiosyncrasies while BJP leadership failed to rein her in. 
 
Yakub Memon 
Hanging of 1997 Mumbai blast main accused Yakub Memon, who was held guilty by courts in 2007 the country witnessed some tense moments and swift working by the courts even on the previous night he was to be hanged on July 30. 
 
Though his death didn’t create a law and order situation, international media lost no opportunity to ensure this incident was bracketed under ‘intolerance’ towards Muslim brethren. 
 
Bihar elections 
This was the single most significant incident that probably indicated the image of BJP was on a journey downhill. Having doled out goodies in form of packages, and most engaging and intense campaigning by the who’s who of BJP including Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modi, the MahagatBandhan with Nitish Kumar and Lalu at the helm held people’s hopes. That is where exactly their votes went too. But in the run up to event, there was a lot of bad blood that spilled forth.
